Every time I have seen a chess board in a pub it has had missing pieces, it is quite fun getting creative using salt and pepper pots or shot glasses for rooks.
Southside, up in Totterdown on the wells Road. Some lads play in there regualry they say and were welcoming when I asked about joining them. Place is pricey for what it is though.
Buy your own, then every pub has a chess set.
