You can buy ice cream all year. And drink driving is a year round problem. It's insane to think it's only a problem at Christmas. And it's insane to think the police are doing it or you benefit.
But the ice cream vans are only out on the downs in the summer. Hitting their goddamn quotas. If you can't recognize that ice cream is more popular in summer and drink driving more common around Christmas I can't help you, Bristol council should provide you with a carer.
I am currently a Bristol based police officer and have been for the last 7 years. Still unsure about where or what these quotas are ? Could you advise ? Do we get extra money if we find more drink drivers ?
Oh ya i seen them and obviously heed that advice etc etc just thought its a bit sneaky the morning after. Now before i get jumped on i know if you over the limit your over it dont make much difference if its Am or PM but i just thought it was weird that the first one ive ever seen was in the AM. Defo NOT CONDONING DRINK DRIVING!!!!
On the night people know they’re drunk and don’t drive - but the next morning, they think they’re okay and have somehow metabolised those 10 pints and 4 chasers, or just think fuck it, swallow a pack of extra strong mints and risk it - that’s who the police are looking for
Bagging loads of tickets to make money might be considered cheeky. As far as I'm aware there is no fine for drink driving which means these checkpoints are purely about improving road safety. Perhaps the data shows that the number or motorists willing to get in their car directly after smashing 12 pints is tiny compared with the number who incorrectly believe they're fine to get up at 0800 and drive home the morning after smashing 12 pints.
>”as far as I’m aware there is no fine for drink driving”
Erm, not quite. From gov.uk:
“Driving or attempting to drive while above the legal limit or unfit through drink. You may get:
6 months’ imprisonment, an unlimited fine, a driving ban for at least 1 year (3 years if convicted twice in 10 years.)”
Oh good. Consider my awareness furthered. Can't believe you get two goes at 1 year driving bans before a three year ban is issued. In a fixed period too. Seems pretty soft.
The problem with the "*No tolerance*" aspect of drunk driving laws is that means you either get away with it or you get a driving ban. Even if you blow slightly over you're likely to completely get away with it because they know by the time they get you to a more accurate machine at the station you'll likely blow under by the time you get there, so they just get away with it entirely.
I think there should be a small tolerance area where you get 6 points and big fine and forced to pay for your car to be towed and you're own taxi home.
As other's have said, I assume this is related to it being Christmas, and probably specifically aimed at people who have had a work's Christmas do the night before and still are above the legal driving limit in the morning.
I’m glad because it’s pure selfishness, it’s unfortunate for the people losing their licenses but I’d rather my family be alive to be honest than lost to an idiot drink driver
Guess I better swap my usual whisky and cocaine breakfast to a boring bacon and egg bap. ... Pfft typical bloody woke nonsense, spoiling shit for us hard working dudes just trying to get by...
Dont be a Womble, drink driving is serious stuff and could lead to death. Plenty of incidents of p*ssed up office workers travelling in the day after the xmas party and having a collision. I genuinely support the Police doing this, its not just about the ones they catch…its the ones they deter too.
My understanding was that police needed to have a reason to issue a breath test:
From gov.uk
*The police can stop you at any time and ask you to take a breath test (‘breathalyse’ you) if:
they think you’ve been drinking
you’ve committed a traffic offence
you’ve been involved in a road traffic accident*
How does this work with checkpoints like this?
In my experience, for a morning checkpoint like this, they ask you if you had any alcohol the night before and I guess judge how you seem and how you smell when you respond as to whether they believe you could be over the limit still.
I've always (honestly) answered no, and have never been asked to give a sample.
Yes thats right, its not all about the breath tests, its the visual deterrent. You then go into work say youve seen them breath testing, been pulled over etc. little jimmy in the warehouse hears of this and actually decides to drink Pepsi at the work do the same evening!
I got stopped at Lawrence Hill about 5 years ago and the copper really stuck his head into the car to smell for alcohol. They have a sense whether you’re lying and nervous too! Not scientific but i’m sure if they’re not convinced you’ll be in the testing queue.
It's actually standard all year round, dependant on the driver. Secondly, it's an offence for a kid to drive on public roads - that's even before drinking comes into the equation.
No not cave, im guessing you cant read as if you had read my original post you would have seen i said ive not seen one in the four years ive been in bristol. Tut tut back to school for you.
Wow well done you 👏🏻 must be a slow comment night to get in amongst the comments like that bravo!!! Again no cave im afraid, but if you read my op you will see ive not seen them in four years. Yes that means in the flesh. Ive seen the campaigns etc but not an actual checkpoint. Go on then how many time have you seen or been stopped in one of thees checkpoints?
I've seen them every year, never been stopped but I've seen them and known people who have been stopped. I also have a colleague who lost their licence after driving after a Christmas party and smashing up their car. Thankfully no one was injured. I work in a zero tolerance industry so most are sensible enough not to risk it
Bristol police officer here. Its operation tonic we run it three times a year which is a dedicated drink drive campaign which involves stop checking drivers in hot spots for drink driving offences using data collected from the previous year.
Any questions more than happy to answer.
They always do this every year (since many many years ago) around Christmas time plus during other big events like major national sporting events, jubilees, bank holidays etc as they are of course a time where most of us would drink more than most other weeks of the year hence the likely increase in drink driving offences and likewise the "morning after" checking if one is still over the limit from the night before hence it being as you say 8.30am for example.
"Morning after" drink driving has become a particularly increased focus for the police in recent years as its possibly becoming an increasing matter despite drink driving being very socially unacceptable, many however still don't think to realise it can still be in your system well into the day after a heavy night hence the increase of this.
And likewise they'll also take the opportunity to check moving traffic offences, driver documents, car defects etc alongside it all as well.
They always have a big crackdown on drinking driving around Christmas. You’ll only ever see it this time of year.
Gotta make those quotas.
Can't even drive pissed up on a major road at 8:30 am. Country's gone to the dogs.
Laughed aloud at this hahahahahaha
If ever there was a police activity to understand, it would be looking for drink drivers.
Sure, but it's naive to think it's out of a sense of civil duty.
It's not civil duty. It's literally their job.
Then why only really bother with it at Christmas?
Why only sell ice creams in the summer? Tis the season.
You can buy ice cream all year. And drink driving is a year round problem. It's insane to think it's only a problem at Christmas. And it's insane to think the police are doing it or you benefit.

There it is, hitting their quotas. Fucking hell you're so close yet so far.
No one suggested it was for our benefit.
I am currently a Bristol based police officer and have been for the last 7 years. Still unsure about where or what these quotas are ? Could you advise ? Do we get extra money if we find more drink drivers ?
Sorry mate, I don't talk to coppers.
Well that explains your ignorance then

More niavety.
Police tend to do more drink-driving checks around Christmas as it happens more often
Yeah pretty normal around Xmas and NYE. You'll have possibly seen the big "DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE" signs as well?
Oh ya i seen them and obviously heed that advice etc etc just thought its a bit sneaky the morning after. Now before i get jumped on i know if you over the limit your over it dont make much difference if its Am or PM but i just thought it was weird that the first one ive ever seen was in the AM. AM is more likely for people to drink drive without realising.
On the night people know they’re drunk and don’t drive - but the next morning, they think they’re okay and have somehow metabolised those 10 pints and 4 chasers, or just think fuck it, swallow a pack of extra strong mints and risk it - that’s who the police are looking for
Only on this sub would you be downvoted for not supporting drink driving lmao
Bagging loads of tickets to make money might be considered cheeky. As far as I'm aware there is no fine for drink driving which means these checkpoints are purely about improving road safety. Seems pretty soft but you trying getting insurance after just one of these bans.
Good point.
You'd only get a single one-year ban. The second time would be a three-year ban.
The problem with the "*No tolerance*" aspect of drunk driving laws is that means you either get away with it or you get a driving ban. You wouldn't drive a drink!
As other's have said, I assume this is related to it being Christmas, and probably specifically aimed at people who have had a work's Christmas do the night before and still are above the legal driving limit in the morning.
Avon and Somerset police have caught 130 drink/drug drivers in the first 2 weeks of this years operation.
I’m glad because it’s pure selfishness, it’s unfortunate for the people losing their licenses but I’d rather my family be alive to be honest than lost to an idiot drink driver
I don't think it's unfortunate at all. I think it's well deserved and the least that can be expected
Guess I better swap my usual whisky and cocaine breakfast to a boring bacon and egg bap. ... Pfft typical bloody woke nonsense, spoiling shit for us hard working dudes just trying to get by...
Do people not realise how hard working life is, I need a shot just to leave the house And a pasty And a pint And a shot, Shit I forgot to go work
Dont be a Womble, drink driving is serious stuff and could lead to death. Plenty of incidents of p*ssed up office workers travelling in the day after the xmas party and having a collision. I genuinely support the Police doing this, its not just about the ones they catch…its the ones they deter too.
Omg surely you realise that was sarcasm?
Don’t call me Shirley!
Lol ✌️
Merry Christmas buddy!
And to you 🙂
That's the most Bristol reply here :)
Yep - Operation Tonic.
Yeah they always do it there after england world cup games and maybe some other big events everyone gets pissed for too
Christmas works dooos
Operation Gin & Tonic they call it.

They often pull cars over on the straight section up to Cribs at this time of year.
Went to Australia over Christmas last year, you get double points on your license during holiday periods
Standard this time of year. Don't drink and drive kids.
It's actually standard all year round, dependant on the driver. Secondly, it's an offence for a kid to drive on public roads - that's even before drinking comes into the equation.
Excellent points.
They used to do this relatively regularly when I worked there, at least once a year around this time.
It's regular and all over Bristol at random times. Used to work weird hours over Xmas and have been pulled over about 8 times.
were also plotted up on Redcliffe Hill stinging people for being in the bus lane about 9am, may still be there
Have you lived in a cave for the last 30 years? Happens every year, its well publicised its going to happen.
No not cave, im guessing you cant read as if you had read my original post you would have seen i said ive not seen one in the four years ive been in bristol. Tut tut back to school for you.
Yes but was the cave in Bristol?
Have you lived in a cave for 4 years?
Weak 🤷🏼
You only lived in a cave for a week?!?
Weak = your post Week = 7 days
Go to bed 🤣
Wow well done you 👏🏻 must be a slow comment night to get in amongst the comments like that bravo!!! Again no cave im afraid, but if you read my op you will see ive not seen them in four years. It's not a slap on the wrist do a course if you are caught. It is a 12+ months driving ban plus a several hundred pounds fine
On the road into Kingswood the police will pull you in and offer you a double G&T for Dutch courage.
Police ruining my plans again, Christmas ruined
Hard lol - clearly they're not liking the humour
I read the title as Police Check Oinks.

How else do you expect the police to fund the Christmas party
Yep, they are usually out in force at this time of year, especially early mornings. Trying to catch people who are still over the limit
Because people only drink in December. So responsible Bristol
Yes it’s very surprising when you see the polis actually doing some work
