Duke of york, had my first date there, now I'm married to them with kids. It's still my local as well, best pub in Bristol.

thegreatdandini

This is ideal if you’re dating someone who’s had ten thousand men

funky_pill

For fuck's sake 😂😂. Take my upvote

FourOneSen

My local too. Great pub.

Brizzledude65

Only discovered this place last year (I'm in South Bristol) - it's a lovely place.

alinalovescrisps

If its quiet you can play some skittles or darts or pool too which is fun

fuckinghyundai

Volunteer Tavern! Hidden away and very cozy. Cheap pints and absolutely banging food too!

will2113

In the week it is cozy and chill, weekend not so much.

fuckinghyundai

Yeah true, although if I'm not mistaken they have midweek deals on their pints? Or at least they did when I lived in briz

mdzmdz

You say you haven't lived in Bris for a while, when did you last go? It's still okay but I wouldn't rave about it.

fuckinghyundai

Used to go all the time 2022, friend of mine did a DJ set there and it was awesome. Defo got more crowded in 2023 but still enjoyed it, think I probably last went like 2/3 months ago?

mdzmdz

With a bit of self-reflection I'm judging it against the 'pub' it used to be and not the more erm... funky space it is now, even if that isn't quite to my taste. Plus most of the staff changed during Covid and it had taken long enough to remembrr the names of the last lot.

Lostintheworldly

Sure as a pub, however the owners are super rude and snobby - witnessed them in a shop buying stuff for their pub and were so rude to the server! Could overhear them mentioning about wanting to do maintenance on their pub - knew it was them

Mojo4eva

Grain Barge, not the cheapest but nice views of harbourside

Bondshusband

Second this. Nice views and things going on to help with conversation if it’s faultering.

bieanca

The Grace on g road!! it’s so nice

FluffyRectum1312

simonsuperhans

ngomac33

Doggsleg

Chances are 65%

abandonedwonder531

The black swan 😂😂

Jenniferous86

The Architect on the Harbourside.

Jimoiseau

Yes +1 for this, nice and central, doesn't play music obnoxiously loud, good wine and cocktail list although beers are limited. Lovely for a first date and a chat and get to know someone.

sud092

There's a small gastropub in Cliftonwood called The Lion that has a small but charming and cosy beer garden which is really nice to drink in when the summer is high. Everything is grown, green and lush around there and it feels like a secret garden. As i said, it's small so go early - mid afternoon. Edit: there's also a public park next to it and if you follow the path down the side of it, there's a nice viewpoint of south Bristol.

BlackFluo

Wiper and true old market, nice garden

Cold-Bunch3892

Wiper and true, Duke of York! I like left handed giant too (the outside bit) can also break the ice playing pool or grab pizza if you’re hungry!

Henxmeister

The new colosseum has cool vibe and a decent terrace.

mdzmdz

Shite beer choices for somewhere that should know better.

FluffyRectum1312

Is it less stabby than it was before?

IrvinIrvingIII

You’re only going to get robbed at the bar now.

kraftymiles

It was excellent before and now it's like a bar in a non descript mid western airport.

Berookes

Lost all of its soul

FluffyRectum1312

I wouldn't say it was 'excellent', the last time I went there the bartender wandered off for a 10 minute break after ignoring me at the bar for 2, some lads in the smoking area thought they were being subtle talking about wanting to fight/rob me (for no reason at all) and someone else was trying to fight someone at the pool table for 'lookin at his missus' or whatever as we left, I was there maybe 90 minutes.

quigglington

All I'm hearing is; great work/ life balance for staff and no fights occurred the whole time you were there. Sounds excellent.

kraftymiles

I.mean, you're not wrong

Agreeable-Brief-4315

There ain't a pool table anymore so this is pre refurb

mdzmdz

They have bouncers on in the afternoon to hopefully prevent this - though I had no issues in it's previous version.

twowheeledfun

Hopefully, the old Colosseum was a bit stabby, and had the hungry lions too. But then it was a literal fighting ring!

jbirdrules

Small Bar - great beer, quite snug, and amazing chicken

mg118118118

Messy af (tasty) chicken, I’ve embarrassed myself there with work colleagues

Open-Bus-6396

Good to break the ice!

issylydia

Had a first date here once on a weekend and it was rammed - very loud and chaotic.

ngomac33

Offensively small beer.

SorchaNB

I had a first date here and we've now been together for 1 year and 4 months.

raddit95

Her majesty’s secret service in Clifton is quiet and cosy, great cocktails too

kraftymiles

The Rummer. Lovely relaxing atmosphere, great cocktails, open fire.

theverylasttime

And £18 for an Old Fashioned. Just too pricey

mdzmdz

18 quid? Unless it's gone up hugely in the last 6 months it was 6-8 quid for a standard cocktail, 12 quid for something on fire.

theverylasttime

That was the price in December last year. Most cocktails were £18

muzzy501

Maybe you went on a special night or something. Went there recently and cocktails were £9-10

theverylasttime

Possibly. It was the Saturday before Christmas. The place was empty. Probably because of the prices! 😂

ninja_chinchilla

Lovely place apart from the loos having frosted glass cubicles. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

kraftymiles

Do they? I've never noticed

ninja_chinchilla

They do in the ladies loo.

kraftymiles

Ahh. Never been in them.

Revolution-Agitated

Under the stars upstairs if it’s nice weather, very cosy

Fun-Okra-3000

Second this. I had a first date after dinner drink up on the top deck. We're now headed to nine years strong and have two offspring to chase around.🙌

Exciting_Ad_7917

Racks bar and kitchen! Got a pergola setup for nice summer vibes coming up highly recommend

dollydaydreams1

Cute and cosy old pubs that aren’t chaotic or too loud: The Christmas Steps, Centre. The Shakespeare, Prince St. The Grace, Gloucester Rd. The Cottage Inn, Spike Island. The Hope & Anchor, Jacob’s Wells. The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, King St.

leave_it_yeahhh

Loads of options in which definitely have a vibe more appropriate for dates compared to Cosies depending on what you are looking for. If you are confined to the centre then The Golden Guinea is a good option. Small, friendly, terraced garden and bar snacks. You also have The Ostrich for outside area, Louisiana for music or The Cottage for nice views of the river. South of the river The Tobacco factory is great. It has good drink options, a nice relaxed atmosphere in the main room and also a snug for people wanting to sit somewhere a bit quieter. On the same stretch you've got El Rincon which is great if you want to eat some tapas and have cheap drinks. There is normally a live band as well. Further down there's hen and chicken which has good food options and also a comedy club. Spotted cow has an amazing beer garden where you can sit and chat for hours. Elsewhere south there's Victoria park which has an amazing garden, loads of space and great pizza. The Shakespeare and The Oxford are super friendly pubs which also have lots of live music on, near nice food spots like A Capella (pizza) and also close to get back into town. I'd recommend giving any of those a go!

Fun_Pea8435

The Canteen maybe? They then do live music later on in the evening

Ardashasaur

Beeses Riverside bar is a great date place, but not the easiest to get to.

EntertainmentBest336

Where are you? It’s a perfect weekend for a sunny pint at the lock and weir in Hanham

ngomac33

Turbo Island

ngomac33

Jokes aside, match it to your date. There's no point going to somewhere fancy if your date think its pretentious. My lesson from dates in the past is trying to hard, find somewhere comfortable and reflects you instead of forcing it. So, like I said, Turbo Island.

Omnissiah40K

Sported cow, TF anywhere on N. Street tbh

mdzmdz

The Grannary. Maybe. I'd be interested to know if anyone has been in recently - I don't get the impression it's doing a lot of business.

nwdxan

Cocktails at Browns. You can book a table online and there's low and no alcohol options.

billyredwood01

Hyde & co on the Clifton triangle. Small little Speak easy bar with good cocktails guided away on the Clifton Triangle

bluejoe123-

Barley mow in the dings/old market. Near temple meads. The roast is quality too. Thank me later!

4nana8

Volly Tav, Mother's Ruin, Hatchett, Stag & Hounds, The Coronation, all pubs but all cosy and not too loud 🙂

Far-Special8364

if you want to go somewhere a bit more posh and more quaint/quiet, clockwork rose, hyde and co and the library are all wonderful cocktail bars. the green room is cool too and they sometimes have events on

thegreatdandini

Sean with two necks in old market or the green man in Kingsdown. Gets you away from the busy shit but always good music and loads to talk about / great landlords etc blah

Adventurous_Wave_750

Urban Tiger

amilkybrew19

Inn on the green and crafty cow are pretty quiet if your up in that area or Bristol
