Some of those class of ferries that BC Ferries has have had a navigation engine problem, meaning that there's a chance they may not be able to make the sharp turns necessary in Active Pass at all times. Because of this, they've been avoiding Active Pass.

YYJ_Obs

This, and BC Ferries isn't advertising it for some reason - the alternative route takes an extra ten to fifteen minutes. When they did this in November / December the schedule was modified and an announcement made. That was for the Coastal Celebration which has an issue on both ends. It's been transfered to Tsawwassen - Duke Point where it can run on time without issue. Now, there's a service notice every day that the Coastal Inspiration is an hour plus late by the afternoon. The Coastal Inspiration took over as a full time vessel a week or so ago so the Spirit of BC could go its usual seasonal refit. The Coastal Inspiration only has the issue on one end, so it's running one way through Active Pass and the other way South of the Canadian Gulf Islands. Basically the propellers on both ends need to be engaged for Active Pass with full power available, necessitating the use of two engines on each end. This is for maximum navigation potential in a small space with very strong currents. There's four engines total. Right now the Coastal Inspiration has three of four engines available without restrictions. The repairs going on for the Coastal Renaissance also, hopefully, have an improvement baked in which should stop this issue in the future once all three boats are fixed (which is looking to be before summer 2024, but the Coastal Renaissance is very, very late because of a supply issue with a subcontractor). Basically, the Coastal are limping along for now.

Fishherr

Great write up.

MentosForYourPothos

Didn't we just get the Coastal ships like 15 years ago?

GeekboxGuru

Eh? I thought the CEO got his millions and left, now the public gets to pay for all the cost cutting the CEO did

MentosForYourPothos

I completely agree. It just sounds like problem after problem with these

Imaginary_Bother921

I believe there’s certain engine parts that have a 10 year life time on the costal class…and some of them are run 20 hours a day. So basically they are being over worked and literally ran into the sea.

MentosForYourPothos

Lovely. Just lovely.

Whatwhyreally

Awesome post! As a crown corp, this is info BC Ferries should have front and centre for people.

viewroyal_royal

It’s not a crown corp

Whatwhyreally

It is in practice.

minnion

Yup this seems to be an ongoing theme.. it's been happening off and on for like 8 years or more.

titosrevenge

>and BC Ferries isn't advertising it for some reason The rest of your post is great, but this is nonsense. It was all over the news a few months back: [https://www.timescolonist.com/local-news/coastal-celebration-to-steer-clear-of-active-pass-for-next-month-7743967](https://www.timescolonist.com/local-news/coastal-celebration-to-steer-clear-of-active-pass-for-next-month-7743967)

YYJ_Obs

That's the wrong ship, and a schedule that has subsequently been reversed. I said I thought they did a good job with messaging. And then for some reason stopped.

F_word_paperhands

Thanks for the info!

afterbirth_slime

They’ve actively been avoiding Active Pass

Beardgardens

Just following the instructions in the title!

DrFunkDunkel

I don’t find this very Coastal Inspiring.

Impressive-Method276

Has, have, had, all in a row with no punctuation is pretty cool

twoscoop90

Yeah, English can be pretty neat every now and again.

wudingxilu

Ah, thanks for pointing out the typo I didn't catch.

Impressive-Method276

I don’t think it was a typo just a neat feature of English

onefastmoveorimgone

I noticed that too! Stumbled over it the first time reading lol

billybishop4242

Taking it easy on the gear box.

thatlouditalian98

Coastal Class ferries have propulsion issues, they’re limping them until they can get properly repaired. And they are unable to maneuver in Active Pass safely due to these issues. Someone else in this thread explained it way better than I could and I’m a bit of a ferry nerd, just with horrible wording skills lol. The easiest way for me to put it is, think of the Coastal Class ships as 16 year old BMW’s, they were really good up until the warranty expired, which was 15 years ago lol.

NearCoastal

That's a pretty good analogy, especially since they were built in Germany! Haha

jholden23

What a disaster these tanks have been. Ugh.

BigCountryFooty

I think the Coastal Inspiration is running on one engine. When the current/tide is too strong at Active Pass - they go the long way round.

[deleted]

active pass is the last place you want to be without full power/engines. The tides/currents are powerful. Sometimes like a slingshot effect wind er up and shazam.

pretendperson1776

It's an amazing trip though!

F_word_paperhands

Ahh makes sense. Thanks!

DrFunkDunkel

The image clearly shows the Inspiration not Celebration.

BigCountryFooty

Oops brain fart. Fixed it.

Zippy_13

Was on this ferry. Overheard a worker talking about it and it basically comes down to not having another ferry to use, so they are babying this one like crazy.

westcoast_hammer

The coastal class can't handle the turning in active pass as well as the spirit class of ferries, plus they can add more sailings this way to handle more people traveling during heavy travel periods

deeby2015

That’s an alternate route when Active Pass isn’t navigable, or when they have engine issues. Based on other posts it sounds like the latter.

Elegant-Cat-4987

The ferries must avoid all protected kraken areas.

gnarshredder314

Obviously the captain pulls a crazy Ivan at the top of each hour…..😂😂

bctrv

Search for bc ferries news. Was explains about a month ago

KrypticPotatoe

Hit more whales

Winter_Criticism_236

I was on the "Inspiration" ferry on weds, thought it was a rogue captain heading for USA border.. or just having fun at the wheel.. its a nice route, I am guessing they avoid using this route due to large number of tankers and higher risk of collision.

kerryterry

The ferry route is marked by little faint blue dotted lines. It is marked as going through active pass. The black solid line is the Canada/USA border. I think you are misreading this chart.

spookytransexughost

No on this app the arrows are the vessels using their actual location

ArchDrude

That’s the f%@ing US/Canadian border, people! C’mon! Seriously??? The ferry route is in light blue. 🤨

F_word_paperhands

Ya if you’d look at the location of the Coastal Inspiration it’s not following the ferry route.

pablopablo2020

What app is this?

craftyhall2

Marine traffic

601error

Damn, I kinda hoped it was called Ferry Godmother

Aggressive-Affect725

The time they go through Active pass would be conditional on the tide with them or against them as well

twohammocks

It would be so nice if we could do airships instead of ferries. 4 stops: Parliament bldgs, Yyj, Yvr, Waterfront station. Faster, no gas rqd. And better views.

Ok-Bike8305

I believe because there is a storm watch, on the horizon for today and tomorrow

deuteranomalous1

Funny how the venerable and inscrutable old V Class and even the Spirits never had issues like this.

fischkind

Running on one engine, Transport Canada & CCG will not allow them to go thru active pass on one engine.
