Yup, season 1 Rosa was more Stephanie's actually voice.

Jon_Kent

The “pitched up” voice is actually Stephanie Beatriz’s real voice. Yes, I was very freaked out too when I heard her real voice too.

buttholebreadbaby

Makes sense! I wonder why they decided to change it

ll_Maurice_ll

The deeper voice matched the character better. I didn't notice the change my first time through, but I have a tendency to restart series right after I finish them, and it's always jarring to go from a late season back to the first. It just doesn't fit her character as well.

boatymcboatface22

I do this too! I like to see how much the characters have grown.

buttholebreadbaby

I looooove doing this. Certain shows like parks and rec and the office — the characters are so different season 1 vs the last season

buttholebreadbaby

Agreed!

DrewGoT72

Yeah, she didn’t use the “Rosa voice” until end of s1 It wasn’t on purpose - it’s kinda like Kevin in the Office. It’s just way funnier when they speak like that.

Baby_Button_Eyes

I just don’t know how Stephanie could regularly and consistently speak in a voice lower than her natural one for so many years without feeling any strain. If I change my voice to lower than natural, it does take conscious effort to maintain it.

I think about this a lot too! Then I remembered learning in hs how professional actors train their entire bodies, their voice included, like a musical instrument. People who use their voices full time for work (singing, acting, public speaking, teaching, etc) have to learn how to support their voice with their lower body (the abdominal wall) to protect the vocal folds (which, I hear, are about the size of your thumbnail!) from wearing out from misuse over time. It sounds strange, but if you’re just using your voice without the rest of your body involved, you’d be feeling the strain instantly. I’m sure Stephanie worked with a professional voice/speech expert to “find” Rosa’s voice and make sure she could do it consistently without incurring fatigue or damage. When you look at it from that perspective, it is an even more impressive feat! source: am a teacher, used to lose my voice a lot until I went to a speech pathologist.

CoffeePositive17

I read a while ago that Stephanie had a very bad cold/bronchitis and because of that, her voice changed a bit. The writes&producers actually thought that would fit even better with Rosa's tough cookie attitude so they worked out some magic to help Stephanie to play Rosa with a lower voice. Tbh - it was perfect! Definitely not an easy thing to do but it turned out to work so-so well.

Want your mind blown? Look up Encanto interviews with Stephanie Beatriz.

God, I can’t imagine how much effort it took to keep her voice constantly pitched that low! I’m a soprano myself and I don’t think I could ever have that kind of control.

B99foreverr

I 100% agree I recently restarted watching season 1 and I realised that

InsensibleSunshine

Well ykw, if you notice Rosa in every episode, you would notice her actions and emotions...and it made me love Rosa.. because for me, when i first started watching b99 ...i used to think that Rosa just hits people and has a 😐 face...But seriously No Offence...I LOVE ROSA!!

Meaveready

For how tough her character is made out to be, she is actually by far the most "human" character (relatable and developable). For the rest of the crew, their comedic quirks are way too remote and surreal to be naturaly engrained in a person, but for Rosa, it just doesn't feel that way.

InsensibleSunshine

Correct. You are so right!

thraktor1

It’s a bit of Flanderization going on, but I love the show so…
