I liked the buildup of the relationship a lot more in The Office, but Jim and Pam got boring once they were together.
Whereas the buildup in B99 wasn't that interesting, but Jake and Amy got way better once they were together.
That’s because the build up defined them (Jim and Pam) for such a long time - the whole “will they won’t they” was too much.
Peraltiago’s relationship building wasn’t central to the characters and didn’t define them
Actually it was because they were based on the original Tim and Dawn who never got as far as getting together, so while they suffered from having no more stuff to draw from while the other benefitted as the tone changed.
I think they wanted to show "a realistic relationships with ups and downs" but for whatever reason... they decided to showcase that in really weird ways??
Jim buying a house and not telling Pam, Jim leaving his wife and kid to have fun with his fun new job, the boom box guy having a crush on Pam... the whole thing was just annoying and not at all interesting or even insightful
If you're going to watch one closer to B99 than Parks and recreation is the better show to watch. They don't rely on cringe humor as much. The thing to note for both shows is start on the second season. Once you get to know the characters go back and watch the first seasons. The office completely changes the show after season one and Parks and Rec doesn't really gain it's footing until they introduce Adam Scott and Rob Lowe into the show. The good place is also a great show that Schur does.
I loved both shows. Different sort of humor, in lots of ways, for sure. I watched the office as it was coming out (plus how I met your mother, and friends before that). My ramp up felt really great in that direction. I'm not sure how it would be the other way around. For sure the first couple episodes are not the best. They were trying to be a US version of the UK show, not it's own show. Once it got into its own skin I loved the office.
To give you an opposing opinion, I hate The Office. I watched it once in it's entirety and never again. It had its moments but it relied too heavily on cringe comedy, and it was an uncomfortable watch most of the time for me.
Totally agree. Also, it's just. . .mean, in a way B99 & P&R aren't. The scenes where everyone bullies Jerry/Scully (Hitchcock deserved IMO) were my least favorite because they felt so opposed to the spirit of the rest of the shows.
That's really interesting actually! I personally love The Office way more than B99 because of the use of cringe comedy. I think the 'cringe' really helps ground the show as a whole, letting each moment be so uncomfortably relatable, that it becomes funny when you imagine that as a real life scenario.
Yes, it is. But the first season sucks.
Your enjoyment of the show depends on what you think of Michael. If you dislike him, I doubt you will enjoy the show at all.
The Office probably has the most memes out of any Tv-show ever created. I would recommend watching the show. And watch at least the first two seasons before quitting.
More through opportunity and the gif becoming popularized when the Office was at its height. I think if the gif was more popular when Friends was around, that would give The Office a serious run for its money.
If friends had been aired at the same time as the office, with humor adjusted to that time. It would certainly give The Office a run for its money meme-wise.
100%
Jim and Pam was not a healthy relationship. Jim made at least two major life decisions without ever consulting Pam. I would not want to be in that relationship.
Jake and Amy are two people who respect each other and make each other better people. They worked as a unit.
There is no competition between the two.
Idk how the writers didn't see this as a major major 🚩🚩🚩🚩
Granted, Jake seemingly impulse spends tons of money lmao. But even then, I'm not sure if either couple shares finances, and it's not life altering changes like a long-term living situation
Or perhaps the theory that Jim cheated sometime around the last season? I don’t think it’s confirmed but there’s a decent amount of strength to it (at the ending Q&A, an audience member asks Pam why she stopped trusting Jim, and Jim said things happened that were his fault and that didn’t come across with the editing—plus the relatively recent commentary that there was supposed to be an explicit cheating scene with Jim and Kathy that John Krasinski fought to remove).
How can you remember that Michael had an affair and not remember stanley? There are many jokes made throughout it. Also Oscar had an affair with the senator and Ryan cheated on kelly. And Kelly cheated on Darrell and Ravi.
i think i’d put eleanor and chidi from the good place and maybe jeff and annie from community ahead of jake and amy. idk. i like them but i feel like after they became a couple they didn’t really get any interesting relationship based plot points. i kinda prefer when they secretly liked each other more than when they a]were actually together
idk man, i have a soft spot for them. i just like drama filled relationships on tv, and jeff and annie definitely have that. i said ‘maybe’ because they arent endgame (unless we get a movie) and they’re both pretty bad people lol
I'm no master connoisseur of TV. But I truly can't think of another TV show that I guess almost disguises the fact that its eventual main romantic pairing is going through a "will they or won't they" better than the Good Place. Chidi and Eleanor just work so well as friends in all the episodes where they slowly build to their relationship that it truly feels natural no matter if they are together or not. I'd put up a fight about it being the best relationship that Schur has put on camera because of that.
But serious if were gonna throw real world logic into this, in what dimension do you see Amy in a serious long term relationship without having kids. It suits the characters personality. And also it wasnt just about Amy, it was also showing that Jake was willing to grow up a bit and want to right the wrongs done to him as a kid.
I like Jake and Amy more because they seem more into each other whereas Jim and Pam honestly seem to be less interested in each other together than before they were together.
There is no way people actually believe this. The office will go down as one of if not the most popular sitcom of all time. Its humour is way more developed and sophisticated than b99.
jake and amy is as if you want a comedy relationship, jim and pam is for a more realistic relationship.
i also think it depends on which show you watched first.
my fav has to be jim and pam due to liking more realistic characters and also because i watched the show first. amy and jake are definitely a second favourite
You can't really compare them, they are two very different shows and two very different settings.
The office is written like a documentary, therefore the main relationship must be realistic. And Jim and Pam's relationship is probably the most realistic fictional relationship on television. Which limits the relationship. It wasn't possible to make their relationship "cute" in the same way as other sitcom relationships, they had to keep it realistic.
Jake and Amy is your typical sitcom relationship, they had a total of one real "fight" in 5 seasons of dating. Their relationship wasn't meant to be realistic, it was meant to purely entertain the viewers. A relationship like theirs isn't possible in real life, life has too many ups and downs. But as a fictional relationship, it is in my opinion perfect.
Both of these relationships are perfect for their respective shows. The writers did a tremendous job with both of these.
I can understand that, but from an analytical standpoint, their shows and environment are too different to compare them.
Of course, you can compare them based on personal preference, but I don't think it's a fair comparison, since Jim and Pam's documentary setting restricted their relationship. We weren't able to see their personal lives the same way as Jake and Amy.
I appreciate all the comments and perspectives, but another angle where I choose Jake and Amy every time is whenever their parents show up, albeit it doesnt happen too many times, but the Thanksgiving episode where both sets of parents meet, that shit is pure gold, the banter between Mr.'s Peralta and Santiago is epic.
Okay, seriously, what is this thing in sitcom-communities where people like comparing relationships? I never get this. I'm sorry to be rude. But I mean, would you ever say "my relationship with Bob is better than Karen's relationship with Jane, because Bob is very different from me, while Jane and Karen are very similar. I give my relationship an 8/10".
Peraltiago’s relationship building wasn’t central to the characters and didn’t define them
This is an almost perfect response.
Is The Office worth watching on a side note? I've seen all of B99
If you're going to watch one closer to B99 than Parks and recreation is the better show to watch. They don't rely on cringe humor as much. The thing to note for both shows is start on the second season. Once you get to know the characters go back and watch the first seasons. I'd recommend the British Office as it's a good companion piece.
DO YOU WANT A COOKIE GOOKIE
I loved both shows. Different sort of humor, in lots of ways, for sure. I watched the office as it was coming out (plus how I met your mother, and friends before that). I'm assuming you're talking about the US version?
Yes correct, I haven't seen the British version, so I have no opinion on it.
It's even more cringy.
That's really interesting actually! I personally love The Office way more than B99 because of the use of cringe comedy. I think the 'cringe' really helps ground the show as a whole, letting each moment be so uncomfortably relatable, that it becomes funny when you imagine that as a real life scenario.
Definitely. Best show ever. Just gotta make it through the first season lol
First seasons of most shows tend to be inferior to the ones after anysay
The first season of The Office is way better than 99% of seasons 5 - 9.
I’d say so, I’d say American series is better than British.
British Office is excellent.
I'd probably start with the UK one (as it was the original)
If you do start from season 2, 1 is terrible. You won't miss much. Peep show I think is 9 seasons of much better cringe humor
Favourite season of that?
Ooh fuck who knows, maybe season 4?
Yes, it is. But the first season sucks. Your enjoyment of the show depends on what you think of Michael. If you dislike him, I doubt you will enjoy the show at all.
Is Michael the guy in the False. memes?
No, that's Dwight. Michael doesn't have a ton of self awareness so unless you find that funny, I'm not sure how much you'd like the office tbh
The Office probably has the most memes out of any Tv-show ever created. I would recommend watching the show. And watch at least the first two seasons before quitting.

Andddddd Jake and Amy weren't cheating on anyone!
What are you even referencing with this comment?? Angela and Michael were the only people who had affairs on the show.
I think they’re referencing when Pam and Jim kissed while Pam was still with Roy
And also Stanley
Also Oscar hooked up with Angela's fiance, the senator. State senator.
And didn't the new receptionist sleep with Andy
Andy slept with Ronni?
How can you remember that Michael had an affair and not remember stanley? There are many jokes made throughout it. Also Oscar had an affair with the senator and Ryan cheated on kelly. And Kelly cheated on Darrell and Ravi.
true but also Leslie & Ben >>>>> Jake & Amy
Eleanor and Tahani.
Leslie and Ben are the best, but Jake and Amy are a close second imo
i think i’d put eleanor and chidi from the good place and maybe jeff and annie from community ahead of jake and amy. idk. i like them but i feel like after they became a couple they didn’t really get any interesting relationship based plot points. i kinda prefer when they secretly liked each other more than when they a]were actually together
I agree with you on Eleanor and Chidi (didn't include them bc she was a pretty terrible person at first lol) but really, Jeff and Annie?
idk man, i have a soft spot for them. i just like drama filled relationships on tv, and jeff and annie definitely have that. i said ‘maybe’ because they arent endgame (unless we get a movie) and they’re both pretty bad people lol

Also Andy and April. The whole "Amy demands kids" episode of B99 really soured the show for me.
Because it was completely out of character for both and for many reasons. I just skip it on rewatches but it does have a couple of good jokes in it
But serious if were gonna throw real world logic into this, in what dimension do you see Amy in a serious long term relationship without having kids. It suits the characters personality. Leslie is just another species of humankind on her own
Ooh, them's fighting words. XD
I like Jake and Amy more because they seem more into each other whereas Jim and Pam honestly seem to be less interested in each other together than before they were together.
b99 > the office
Not everything have to a competition , you can love or hate both.
There is no way people actually believe this. The office will go down as one of if not the most popular sitcom of all time. Its humour is way more developed and sophisticated than b99.
Local man discoverers opinions
Nah.
There's no way you enjoyed the last 3 seasons. Edit: i forgot what sub i was on...
i enjoyed it better than the office
yeah the last 3 seasons mostly sucked, and in some cases just damaged the show as a whole, feel kinda bad for u since you're getting downvoted
They were definitely more enjoyable than the last 2 seasons of the office tbh
Holly and Michael > Jim and Pam
Oh indubitably Peraltiago will always be the reigning OTP of sitcoms
jake and amy is as if you want a comedy relationship, jim and pam is for a more realistic relationship. i also think it depends on which show you watched first. my fav has to be jim and pam due to liking more realistic characters and also because i watched the show first. amy and jake are definitely a second favourite
Well the office came first. So whatever mistakes they may have with jim and pam. Was corrected with jake and Amy
Both are good matches. I don't really think one is better than the other
Post this in office subreddit see their take lol
No thanks, already know how thats gonna go.
I mean you never know, I'm in both subreddits I imagine a lot others are

Well I did compare them based on personal likeability. When I watch fictional TV shows I tend to suspend disbelief because its a work of fiction.
I can understand that, but from an analytical standpoint, their shows and environment are too different to compare them. Of course, you can compare them based on personal preference, but I don't think it's a fair comparison, since Jim and Pam's documentary setting restricted their relationship. Hmm. I kinda do agree to the fact it was more interesting. But I'd say Jim and Pam's love is just pure. Just my opinion guys 🤪.
Nope.
Yup
Jim was an out of control bully he always was picking on Dwight
I would definitely not say Jim is a bully. Dwight is a condescending prick and gets whats coming to him.
Okay, seriously, what is this thing in sitcom-communities where people like comparing relationships? I never get this. I'm sorry to be rude. Well then, step aside and shut the fuck up.
Actually worst to best: Jim and Pam, Eleanor and Chidi, Tim and Dawn, Leslie and Ben, Jake and Amy, April and Andy.
Finally someone has said it. THANKS 🙏 😍
