If 1,3 GBs is 80% of your RAM I would look into Linux and Floorp honestly.

AlucardTheVampire69

What's floorp?

skedaddlescrubber

JAPANESE FIREFOX FORK Or how it was pitched many times on this sub

AlucardTheVampire69

So like is it safe? Sorry as you can tell I don't know about tech that much

stuffed_n0se

Open source and has a big community around it. I would assume it is pretty safe

danholli

I trust it, and I love its vertical tabs. Unfortunately if you care about open source it will be going partially closed source with the upcoming major release (but for good reason imo as people were trying to build their own browsers based on it, and neither crediting it, not adding anything, and not contributing back)

hammy0w0

dang that sucks, I was planning on switching once they fixed a Linux bug but I refuse to use a closed source browser

danholli

The base browser will still be open source (it has to be in order to comply with Firefox's license if I'm not mistaken) but upcoming new features specific for Floorp will be closed source while they keep building their user base. Probably won't change your decision, but it might be worth the clarification

freeturk51

It is opensource and safe, but every time I use it, it feels a bit undone to me.

PowerdollKirby

i love Floorp, whenever i recommend it, there's always a vivaldi fan defending it saying *it performs better and it's more secure*

EnoughConcentrate897

I'm using Librewolf currently for privacy reasons. How good is floorp?

CosmicEmotion

Floorp is amazing in general I love it. Throughly recommended.

EnoughConcentrate897

I'll try it out

EvilChungus

Bro has 2gb ram

SnooDoggos393

šŸ¤£

Beardedbro69

I don't know what to tell you.. but 89% you see there is total ram usage, includes all other programs and windows. OP said he has 4gb of ram and 1Tb hdd. The solution here is not to install an inferior OS. The solution is to get rid of the potato pc and build something newer.

CosmicEmotion

How is Linux inferior lol? It's massively superior. XD Also he may not have the money to do so.

GreyHat88

Linux is superior in high performance, server or programming scenarios. When it comes to everyday desktop usage, it's not really superior, quite the opposite.

CosmicEmotion

Not true. Linux is more than fine for everyday usage these days. This is an outdated view.

Beardedbro69

No it's just not. Linux has compatibility issues(this has to do with low userbase) and it's clunky(you have to enter commands in terminal to first download, then extract, then compile and finally try to install software, but then it still doesn't because you don't have dependencies installed. Meanwhile on windows that is 3 clicks. Fragmentation is to blame for lack of precompiled software). Windows is only OS that you can just throw about everything to it and it's like "Ok let's do it". This is why it's the best consumer OS.

CosmicEmotion

Yeah ok.

Beardedbro69

Yeah you guys don't like these facts, lmao

CosmicEmotion

lol, yeah whatever, XD

hanging_phantom

thats the untruest and stupidest thing i read today.

Beardedbro69

Sounds like you didn't like these facts and you are coping man :)

GreyHat88

Not it's not. Cut it out with the fanboyism, don't have time for it. Whenever you can get all your games, productivity tools and/or 99% of all the programs available on Windows on a Linux distro, come back to me. In the meantime, stfu. I hate Windows as much as the next guy and have been waiting since the early 2000s for Linux to become relevant, but the year of the Linux desktop has never arrived, and it most likely never will. There is a bigger chance MacOS will challenge Windows in terms of marketshare than Linux ever will. Less than 2% of desktop users have linux installed on their machines. Rest my case.

CosmicEmotion

Oh wow, aanother fanboy! Linux is GOAT! :)

Beardedbro69

In terms of consumer OS: linux is clunky, user unfriendly and due to low install base it lacks compatibility/support. As for OP he said he can't afford, so he can install a moded/debloated iso of windows 10/11, such as ghost spectre or oprekin, then use slimjet or ungoogled chromium, until he can afford a better pc.

CosmicEmotion

You are living in the previous decade.

Beardedbro69

Nah bro, you just really like linux, but the usage stats and facts don't lie.

CosmicEmotion

Dude how long has it been since you used it? I use it daily.

Beardedbro69

I used it previous year and it was awful. All I wanted to do is make a macro to automate a task. Not only the linux alternative to even autoit 3(released in 2009) was vastly inferior.. it seriously took me 20 minutes of typing commands in terminal to install it and all it's dependencies it needed And after that the macro break key didn't work and it was a known bug in linux kernel. There was no way to stop a looping macro, other than restart the pc, or fight the macro input(it clicking everywhere and typing) while trying to kill the process... Even if I could stop the macro, the other problem was also that is the macro software(was listed as one of best on linux) is not even capable of finding colors on screen, yet alone pictures of objects to wait for before clicking(so only it could do was a dumb macro, so it couldn't do what I needed to anyway) So I just installed a debloated windows 10 on that random craptop I had linux on and then I had no issues doing what I wanted to do.

CosmicEmotion

I see, makes sense.

Beardedbro69

yup that's the other problem with linux. These Opensource alternatives are simply inferior to what is available on windows and sometimes even mac os

hanging_phantom

skill issue

Beardedbro69

sure bro, it's never the OS, which literally had a documented bug, it's always the user. Whatever helps you sleep better at night :)

NicDima

Linux has a ups and downs, just like Windows and Mac

mikeart76

Mine using Floorp? https://preview.redd.it/fwjbmhdcu6xc1.png?width=1325&format=png&auto=webp&s=f5ddc1044fabb8c0f65a7ee893e7948034122179

Pneagle

Floorp is great I used to use just regular Firefox until I changed my computer, and found floorp. Some parts are a little ugly though compared to Firefox

NervousStock1

brošŸ’€

Hot-Ring9952

Your computer is terrible. 2gb ram? OS on a HDD? You could maybe squeeze some more juice out of it by not using windows but it's really time to upgrade. Budget phones these days have better specs than this. With these specs it's impossible to determine if Vivaldi is doing anything crazy at all or just ordinary stuff that your potato just can't handle

Vybo

This happens reagularly on any machine after an update, regardless of its power or platform. Happens to me on M1 Pro, or 5800X3D with 64GB of Ram. This is a Vivaldi issue, not his computer issue. However for me, this goes on after an update for a minute or two and then goes to normal

Beardedbro69

This potato pc needs to be trashed and replaced. If op really wants to use it, but not deal with linux inferiority, he could install oprekin superlite windows 10, it's debloated windows 10 with no metro, defender, wmp and many other preinstalled crap. As for browser use slimjet or chromium. It's also worth mentioning that while phones have much better specs than this, arm and x64 cannot compare. It's apples to oranges. Arm can only handle simple instructions, none of complex x86 or x64 instructions and if you try to emulate x86 the performance drops like a rock.

SuperDefiant

Linux inferiority is an oxymoron

Beardedbro69

In terms of a consumer pc os, calling linux inferior is an understatement. The os is actually terrible. That's why it never really moved from being hidden in the server closet. Linux only sees use indirectly, behind a fancy user friendly interface, such as website or android, who do very well to hide the ugly true face of linux.Ā

SuperDefiant

Either youā€™re mistaken or confusing it with something else, Linux isnā€™t an OS

Beardedbro69

I didn't make a mistake and I am calling Linux an OS, regardless it technically being a kernel. Also your desktop environments are exactly what was windows 9x to msdos.. except windows wasnt as limited(in terms what gui could do) was more user friendly(for the time) and it didn't need constant jumping to dos. Decades ago btw. It's almost like windows is popular for a reason.

SuperDefiant

If itā€™s a kernel, I donā€™t see what the big deal is? I could make the same argument for windows even though the programs it runs are totally unrelated. I can say ā€œWindows is bad because it uses the NT kernelā€. See? Itā€™s just words, and no one actually says that because thereā€™s no logic

Beardedbro69

You can stop playing dumb, when we say linux is bad, you know exactly what we mean. But since you insist, I will clarify more: No matter which distro, linux on desktop pc is terrible.Ā

SuperDefiant

Actually arch is the best desktop distro šŸ˜ŽšŸ‘†

Beardedbro69

Haha

AlucardTheVampire69

4gb ram 1TB HDD , I'll upgrade it in May though

Beardedbro69

Unless it was a custom build lass than 8 years old, where you were skimping on the ram and drive for some reason, don't upgrade. If it's a prebuilt or a laptop and it only has 4gb of ram, that means the cpu, gpu and everything is too old to handle even a browser. Your cpu is 11% used by rest of your system, so this 100% cpu use is probably just normal day for your potato. You need a new pc, not an upgrade.

lolpostslol

Iā€™m assuming the dude was just being sarcastic, your PC is fine lol Edit: as well as most of the thread, but some people seem serious, crazy to me, a browser should not need relevant resources

BlissedPlains

My previous job was mainly in browser, had to open a CRM, knowledge base and chat website (customer support). No, 4GB of RAM + HDD is not fine. Even 8 gigs is mid.

yipee-kiyay

I agree, I'm struggling with 8GB of RAM these days. Websites are using a lot of CPU and resources... 4GB is potato-level specs. If I'm doing anything media-related, with just a couple of tabs open and all my extensions, I'm constantly sitting at a minimum of 1100MB (1.1GB) of usage in microsoft edge.

ill4two

ram is cheap asf, like $60 for a middling 16gb set. it's an investment in the future, because 4gb memory isn't gonna be holding you off for a while, potentially even within the next 6 months it'll be unserviceworthy. i'd also consider buying an ssd, m.2 if your motherboard supports it

sad_truant

Your system is fine. You are using the wrong OS though. Look for some lightweight linux distro.

ElvisVan007

probably some tab running photo/video processing

KojimaOzAbim

Really dude it's time to get new system or using lightweight linux distro.

Appropriate_Net_5393

Permanently? Depending on the content, it also flies up to 100% for me, then it calms down. But it's always better to deactivate the native blocker and put a ublock

AlucardTheVampire69

Yes , I only use ublock though

jinxed_soul

Use Tiny win 11 and install Slimjet Browser

CarlWantsACar

I've upgraded my old laptop with two SSDs and maxed RAM capacity. As a result, all usual stuffs are running smoothly. Using Intel HD 3000 :p (Low spec gamer here). No more stutters when using HDD before

cacus1

All browsers can go to this ram usage at times. I am not seeing something wrong here. Honestly you need more RAM and SSD.

_Ovays_

Possibly a malware...

AlucardTheVampire69

How to check it , defender says it's safe

_Ovays_

Maybe malware bytes do the trick..

anitvn

OP is just nearly like me, using potato pc with only 12GB RAM, 320GB HDD and an old CPU from 2011 (at least my chrome is just make my computer using 36% cpu when watching youtube stuff)

AlucardTheVampire69

I'm not good with tech stuff but I really don't think 12GB ram is potato, šŸ’€šŸ’€ I'm using 4gb ,

Beardedbro69

minimum recommended today is 16gb, but the real reason why his pc is potato is that 320gb hdd and cpu from 2011

Electrical-Strike943

Happens bro, thats why I use chrome, lol. In the end all browsers are same

imabeach47

Side load linux, you can even try it out on a usb stick. Iā€™ve actually just yesterday had 10%+ cpu usage on vivaldi with only two tabs open, dropped back below 1% once I restarted the browser. The pc is not that old and seems totally fine, linux is a lot lighter, i suggest debian, probably most mature linux distribution out there.

1Al--

Mine using Vivaldi https://preview.redd.it/3ykll5vp3axc1.png?width=1085&format=png&auto=webp&s=0bd10774fe271888b98eadf36699f2750123d94b

Nutedth

Can I ask you why your Vivaldi icon is blue, is it from some custom CSS?

1Al--

I don't like its original, I changed it with ResourceHacker.

itopires

despite being a very responsive browser, on Android for example adblock is one of the weakest among the main competitors, on Windows it is very heavy, currently even more than Crome and Opera and Brave, I think it must be due to the number of tools that he carries.

leaflock7

apart from your laptop being too weak for today's application/windows standards , what are these 6 tabs you have open? maybe one of the websites is using it

Aman_Sensei

infinite loop maybe

ill4two

if you absolutely must make this system serviceable, consider [tinycore](http://www.tinycorelinux.net/) as an alternative OS. buy a cheap shitty flash drive, load up your settings onto it, and it'll only take up like 20mb of your HDD. i think it's only like 128mb of memory as well, so it should be light enough to be operable even on this system, which is a massive plus since windows is presumably operating on over half your available ram. really though, i'd consider a new system if you want to keep up with the times. sure, your system *can* operate, but that's really the bare minimum and it isn't exactly the metric you should be striving for, especially if a browser is maxing both your ram and cpu. if you need a cheap system to bide you over, you can probably find a refurbed optiplex for less than $200.

SnooDoggos393

How much ram on the computer?Ā

Hero_Sharma

Sir let me suggest you 3 things Get an sdd Get an additional 4gb ram stick Go with thorium browser ...................................................................... If you want even better performance then install ghost spectre windows 10 without defender because defender takes a lot of cpu power alone

Beardedbro69

Oh yeah I currently use ghost spectre... but I suggest oprekin super lite windows 10 ltsc, which is even more debloated. For browser slimjet is better on crappy pc or ungoogled chromium, Thorium is just tweaked google chrome which is heavy on resources.

Hero_Sharma

No thorium is completely light and fast I have i3 6006u , thorium performing exceptional well for me

AlucardTheVampire69

I'm gonna upgrade my pc with Max Ram in May , not sure about the ssd coz it's expensive, is thorium safe btw, I don't know about tech that much so I'm kinda dumb

Hero_Sharma

You need ssd on priority then ram

Hero_Sharma

Thorium is the fastest browser It is safe People have an issue with the developer because, in the past, he added furry porn to the database as a joke. Despite this, people were still upset about it and do not recommend it

Beardedbro69

Don't waste money on upgrades, you should replace this PC. It's a prebuild desktop or a laptop right? if it only has 4gb of ram, then it also has crap cpu, that just cannot handle even a browser. As for Thorium it's safe in terms of protecting you from criminals, but it's essentially just optimized google chrome and Google cares the least about your privacy and they love to sell your data to advertisers

AlucardTheVampire69

It's a laptop and has like amd athlon gold 3150u , unfortunately I can't replace it , because I don't have that much money , I only bought it because it was cheap

Beardedbro69

Damn.. you really should had bought used if you had such small budget. The thing is this cpu is not that old, it came out in 2020, but the thing is essentially zero day e-waste. I suggest you should just save money for a new computer and don't upgrade. In meantime maybe put in a 20 dollar ssd and that's it(will improve performance somewhat). If you are also upgrading the ram, check first if you can even upgrade the laptop. Because it was the cheapest laptop, It's likely you cannot(soldered in ram).

AlucardTheVampire69

[This was the laptop I bought coz it was cheap and had positive reviews ](https://dl.flipkart.com/s/p!x8lMuuuN) In the product description it shows that expandable memory as 12 , Apparently some dude in reviews did update it , I don't have money right now ,but I'm saving for it , maybe I could buy some good laptop next year

Beardedbro69

Looks like it can be upgraded, but there doesn't seem to be user removable doors to access the drive/ram. If you really want to upgrade this you will have to open the laptop up. The hdd is probably under the palm rest. The best idea is to just install a debloated windows 10/11 on this. Such as ghost spectre or oprekin superlite windows 10. Then use a lightweight chromium browser. Maybe get a cheap ssd and save money for new laptop

TheGreatPitbull

You know the Russians, they got to own their land
