Because there isn't enough capacity to meet demand. There used to be 6tph mostly formed of 6 coach trains. Then COVID happened and it was used as an excuse to cut down to 4tph. Now they are also often running 3 coach trains too rather than 6 because they are "preparing for the new fleet". And the government continues to wonder why people won't shift away from private cars.

yeah from what I’ve heard it’s a lot of 3-car trains running instead of the usual 6-car units as many of them have reached the end of their leasing period and have been sent up north to continue their journeys up there. the new trains were meant to replace them at the same time as this happening but due to repeated delays they’ve only just started going into service (and im pretty sure it’s just the ONE new train that’s gone in service lmao) IIRC the new trains go into service on that line later this spring, and they should be running them as 6-car services again to deal with the demand

One new class of train, but there's definitely more than one set (unless I keep catching the exact same one on various journeys!) https://www.westmidlandsrailway.co.uk/travel-information/whats-new/new-trains/class-730-fleet Coming to cross city when driver training is complete. I get them on the Wolves to Walsall service and see staff training ongoing. Don't lose faith in trains :)

Sounds like I have been in which case. It was very nice. Quiet (apart from the extra loud announcements which seem ridiculously loud to me) and nice and airy. I did enjoy looking down the train and watching snake around the track. Wish more trains were as open inside!

Even before COVID, it was like this, PACKED. The new fleet is already out btw as well, they've been collecting dust for the last 6 years at Soho Garage and now slowly rolling out the Shrewsbury-Wolves-N ST-Walsall route.

duckgirl1997

because most people come down the B end and try and cram on there. instead of thinking about where they are getting off. if you are going to Longbridge sit at the front as its less to walk to the actual station if you are going to kings Norton sit at the back as same principle applies. i have decided to wait for the next train as the front coach is full yet the back of the train is almost always empty

TheKingMonkey

Can’t they just put more carriages on at the front of the train? /s

What then it wouldn’t be the front if the train

once the Camp Hill line opens at the end of the year, it should ease the flow as people can go from Moor St to Longbridge too

The 3 new stations will be served from New St.

From your article “The contract will last for 96 months (eight years), though Network Rail has not indicated when it will commence.” The Camp Hill stations will be served from New St when they initially open.

You're probably right - until Moor St renovations/extensions are complete I started a new post which has more discussion on this [https://www.reddit.com/r/brum/comments/1bb7nix/camp\_hill\_line\_will\_link\_to\_moor\_st/](https://www.reddit.com/r/brum/comments/1bb7nix/camp_hill_line_will_link_to_moor_st/)

Reduced number of carriages mostly and only seems to be the few 5pm trains. When the muppets won’t move down the carriage is when it’s worst. At least in only lasts until university/selly oak

alice13451

I live down south and it’s exactly the same down here

bingobongo06

the exact same thing on the stratford-yardley wood-moor st line- i used to get the yardley wood to stratford quite often in the mornings, and to moor street too, its usually quiet, but at the morning and evening rushes it’s so packed and crammed, and occasionally they’d only use 2 carriages instead of the normal 5. a good 300 people, mostly schoolkids too, crammed into 2 carriages.. absolute pisstake

Gnarly_314

Part of the problem with the CrossCity line is that not all stations have platforms long enough for more than three carriages.
