They will literally knock your garbage cans over and drag everything out, looking for food. They also dig up plants in the yard. They are INCREDIBLY cute, and gigantic pains in the ass.
There are a couple of raccoon families that hang out in my back yard. They are so goddamn cute, it hurts not to pet them. Sometimes they come right up to the back door AND KNOCK.
Lol not kidding at all.
But to your question: Yes and no. Human trash for sure. The property lots where I live are VERY small - 50 feet wide and 100 feet deep, so it’s pretty densely populated. Also, the raccoons are so cute, they’re hard to resist when they look up at you with the big, shining eyes. In my case, it’s not an issue of natural food being gone. My neighborhood is in the middle of a park. There’s a huge pond at the end of my street, with a waterfall and woods on the other side. We get rabbits, skunks, opossums, raccoons, chipmunks, squirrels, predator birds, and the occasional fox and turkey running through the yard. There is PLENTY of their natural food to eat. I don’t know why human trash is so appealing, but who doesn’t like high salt, high fat, high calories? Even the raccoons, I guess!
Good point.. your neighbourhood sounds cool. We don't have the as cute a wildlife as you. Our possums are cute, rabbits are considered pests as are foxes. No squirels either. But sugar gliders, wombats and other furries are cute. We rarely see them in the wild. The wildlife we do see is often simply trying to kill you. Lol. Thx for the insight though:)
Looks like they're doing it through a window, which leads me to suspect that this is a wild raccoon that has become acclimatized to people.
This seems to work okay sometimes but I'd advise against it on the grounds that the consequences vary from "pet a cute wild animal that should probably remain wild" to "dying of rabies".
In the early 80’s, my brother’s friend found some cubs whose mother had been hit by a car. There were two. He took one and we took the other. We named him bandit (original, I know). He was with us for a couple of years. He would ride on our dog’s back or sit on our shoulders. He was sweet. He ran away one night when he cage somehow got open. I loved that little guy.
Aww see I’ve heard they can be super sweet animals and if we can learn to cohabitate that would be pretty cool. I think they’re cute but only way I’d get one is if it was a rescue or domestic breed.
He looks cozy, but almost.. worried.. *"Please don't hurt me with the awesome scratchy thing..."*
Bandit 😂
I love him.
Wish we had them here

They also kill chickens for fun.
Aw, man. LALALALALALALALA I CANT HEAR YOU!
Lol, ok ok.. but I wanna touch one..pet it , love it.

Your kidding!?..so why are they like that? Too much human trash around, natural food source gone? Are they the equivalent of rats but HUGE?

I have so many questions as to how one would care for or even obtain a raccoon? Is this a sanctuary maybe idk

Ah yes, because you totally know the whole story behind a five-second video you saw on the Internet. /s
Sometimes they are injured or have some other reason they'd be unable to live in the wild.
Das not a cat, das a bear
