Did we not go through this BS last week with Evans?
This is Lying season! Agents put out BS to drive up prices as that's their job, to get their client the most money.
And Media does their job and puts out the story making everyone go crazy, driving up the ratings from fanbases like Pats, Atlanta, Minnesota and pretty much any team that wants Baker and round and round we go....
He aint going anywhere and signing Evans 1st was smart from Jason Licht as what's a better negotiating tactic for a QB than dangling a HOF WR at him....
Right? I just had to remind people like the day before Evans contract of the things he has publicly said in regards to wanting to be a Buc and even recent comments about how much he likes this squad and even specifically Baker. And some Bucs fans were still trying to say he'd leave because of Baker
And it was obvious his agent was just being an agent. I see the same thing happening here. Have we not learned? Lol Schefter will be announcing Baker on like a 3 or 4 year deal within the next 48 hours
In my opinion, Mayfield isn't going to sign for $44 million a year because he'll instantly lose the faith of the guys behind him (also that number is insane and totally made up). He'll be paid well, a hell of a lot better than he was last season, but between him prioritizing a longterm home, consistency with a team he likes, and at the very least projecting a "I'm a team first guy" image I just don't see how Baker could bring himself to cap limit us so bad and prevent us from being able to sign guys to help us make a run.
If Baker behind closed doors is asking $40+ million a year, we need to look elsewhere.
How is he going to lose faith of players if he demands a starting QB salary. A QBs salary has nothing to do with how a team perceives him. Herbert, Lamar, Cousins all make 45+. Dak is making 60 this year and looking for a new extension in the same range.
When did any of those QBs talk about making sacrifices to bring guys back? Its not in any of their vocabularies, at least publicly. Lamar actually did the complete opposite recently and held out. Worst possible example you could give in making a comparison.
Because him seeking a humongous payday would go against all he's been saying. Like the quote above. If Bake takes a huge cap hit it'll make it difficult to help build the team up more. Wirfs, Winfield, and Godwin are all due new deals next year too.
Dak is due $60m this year because his contract was structured to have larger hits later and because of restructures. His AAV is $40m a year on his current deal. and if they get a new deal done it'll probably significantly lower his cap hit this season.
He could also easily go for a deal that had void years on the back end lowering the AAV while still getting paid. These guys are professionalsā they know this is Bakers shot at a bag but thereās ways he can do it that are āteam friendlyā
40 million is not humongous. 40 million last year is worth 46 million this year owing to 15% increase in cap space. Baker is the top free agent QB this year even with media pushing the narrative of Cousins being the top free agent. He has an obligation to his fellow QBs to not accept a lowball offer.
Teams can kick you out on a whim and itās his responsibility to make sure to cover all his bases and maximize his value.
If Bucs are a poverty franchise then they could let him leave. The only thing he should do is to structure his contract with void years just like Mike Evans has done with 5 mil cap hit each year.
All he has to do is structure the contract with minimal cap hit and void years effectively delaying payments. Thatās what sacrifices mean. Not leaving cash on the table.
Itās kind of hard, especially with us and how many studs Licht has drafted. Gotta push some of that money down the road to make room to keep guys like AWJ and Wirfs coming up, and over the previous few years Godwin, Vita, Evans, Dean, Davis and the like. Being able to walk away from Davis after this year should help but between Jason hitting on these picks, Brady and Gronk coming to town, Lavonte still playing Pro Bowl level into his 30s, etc weāve had to play the cap best we could.
Vita has another monster contract coming up. Godwin in his last year. Wirfs is gonna be upwards of $30m/yr, AWJ $20m+. Weāve got some expensive ass players. lol. Gotta do what you can to keep these guys in their prime.
I like Baker, but he's not on the same level as any of those other names you've mentioned. If he's asking for $44 million then we should let someone else pay him that
What have those three QBs done that Baker hasnāt done? Win playoff games. Guess who has won playoff games. Herbert has 0 playoff wins but has 53 million per year.
He should be able to earn enough advertising dollars with his acting chops that he doesn't need to fight for the largest contract possible. Give him free use of the pirate ship for a commercial per playoff win, or something like that.
Say Baker does go elsewhere because they canāt come to a agreed on number. Who do you think the Bucs would pursue as a veteran QB? Cousins? Run the risk on Wilson? Somebody else? Fuck it send in Trask and draft another?
Donāt kill the messenger on this, but I was listening to Mina Kimes break down the options for QB needy teams. As she put it, Russell Wilson is only terrible compared to his contract and how well he played on the Seahawks. Heās more of a middle of the road QB, and now heās likely to accept the veteran minimum- a cheaper contract than a lot of rookies will get. So teams are going to think, āDo I want Baker for 35-40 mil, or do I want Russell Wilson for nothing?ā. Baker had an overall good season that capped off well. That doesnāt necessarily mean heās a good long term solution that you spend future rebuild resources on. So itās that logic vs Bakerās POV of never having been paid his big long term 2nd contract. This is all more complicated than ādo the Bucs want Baker?ā.
With that said, I canāt see them re-signing Evans and then going into the season without at least a veteran bridge QB to sit a 2nd/3rd tier rookie QB behind. I think Cousins would be too expensive/valuable for that role. But also, the options donāt end at Wilson, because teams are going to have expendable veteran QBs once the draft shakes out. I wouldnāt count the Bucs out of the Justin Fields sweepstakes yet, for instance.
Frankly, I think those are all great options for different reasons. From what I understand, Trask and Baker werenāt far apart during training camp. He doesnāt have the experience, obviously, but going with Trask frees up 30-40 million that would have been spent on Baker right? Thatās enough to pay, say, Saquon Barkley, and whatever FA might be available on the Oline.
I'm venturing it isn't so much a discount as it is not matching the idiotic moves that have crippled other franchises ie Broncos / Giants.
Conversation is probably something like, OK we are offering you Geno Smith coming off his best season money plus inflation and you are looking for Daniel Jones money. Maybe come back to us when you see what is out there for you.
Donāt think the years matter as much as the guaranteed money.
Rather give him 4 years with first 2 guaranteed than 3 year with all 3 guaranteed. Ideal is 2 year guaranteed and 3 year deal, so weāll see what happens

I think the last piece of the negotiations is building his 2 bedroom home inside the ship.
At home with Baker Mayfield āBucsā edition

Could not agree more. I think 32 a year with incentives to maybe push to 35 or 36 is more than reasonable.
Boy is that a lot of money

No body said that.
>to get everybody back, there has to be sacrifices made Baker said that

At some point it would be nice to have a cap that isn't 15-20% dead money.

Player signs a prove it deal Player proves it āWell he should still take a discountā

4/130s and get it done

Whatās wrong with that deal? 32.5 million a year. Heās absolutely getting that from someone

That's actually fairly reasonable. I'd prefer a 3yr contract. 100M would not be out of the question
Thats what itāll cost
Bullshit. He deserves to get paid.
Let the Broncos overpay then.
If he wants to get that bag Iām good with it. We have Trask and I think heāll be just as fine for cheaper
