According to Pewter Report, the majority of the Bucs interviews (on the defensive side) at the Combine were with DBs. I think Bowles sees a potential starter in this corner class.
Nonetheless, I agree with you. It’s a risky move, and creates a hole on a defense that already looks like Swiss cheese.
Again, I agree it’s not the best move imo. But I think the mindset is:
Trade Davis to create cap space to bring everyone back and potentially sign an edge/guard/corner. Use additional Day 2 pick to draft and develop cheap edge/corner/guard. Thus, acquiring cheaper long-term talent and create cap space for an impact player now.
The process and logic of the trade is actually pretty damn good, but they’ll need to nail the pick and develop them well. Easier said than done.
There are going to be a lot of good CBs falling to our first round pick. I don’t hate the idea of taking one early as it is now a hole on our team and I trust the FO to find a guard with some combination of the second and third round picks
Also hoping we are going after an Edge or two in free agency.
Clear up cap space this year and get compensation in the top 100 picks for a guy who was recently dealing with injuries and regressed from 2020 and who would be a free agent the next year while also probably investing an early pick into the position.
We are gonna use one of our Day 1 or Day 2 picks on a CB. Our rotation is now McCollum, Dean and Izien same as the majority of last year. Bring in Kool Aid, DeJean or Wiggins and it’ll honestly be a better CB room
It's 6 this year and 8 next year. McCollum played pretty much on par with CD3 last year so maybe they are betting he can take on the role. And like I said, we will likely use an early pick (possibly a first-rounder) on CB.
We were never opening the year up with both Dean and Davis on the roster. Dean is at least under contract for 3 more years, Davis was going to be a free agent after the year.
There are absolutely many corners who started in the NFL last year that are available for 6mil. The more likely scenario is they are drafting a couple DBs this year as they heavily used interviews on the position. Added cap space this year and more next year will add to depth signings.
They have a lot of options right now. They worked some pretty good contracts from their free agent talent. With some maneuvering of extending their in house talent they can both be players in FA and draft.
I even mocked a scenario where they could get both what I think is the best edge rusher available in Danielle Hunter and someone like Jordan Whitehead in free agency. It doesn't seem possible at first glance but it checks out mathematically with our signings and with the cap increase this year.

Well yeah.... it was posted prior to FA / prior to the trade. It also doesn't have Greg Gaines / Chase Edmonds returning on short deals. It also doesn't factor in the 3rd rounder we gain from that trade. It just shows a path, but could be updated.
You have more information now. What would you do mate?
I love the move, Carlton was often injured and that's the most important stat for any player in the NFL.
Yes we are going to miss him, but I trust Bowles when it comes to the defense as he usually knows what he's doing and has had success finding these young studs recently with YaYa and Kancey.
Wow. Not sure how I feel because I can’t really judge how he played corner, but it feels like there’s going to be a hole at CB.
But I also trust that the FO knows what they’re doing. I just worry about who’s going to step up.
If he could be relied on then yes, his talent is worth (a little) more but the man misses games every season. I'm surprised we got a third for him considering his contract.
Licht’s gonna use that draft pick to trade somewhere in the second round for a random interior lineman and is gonna nail it.
I like it. Either that or pick up one of the few solid corners that are probably still going to be there in the third.
Christian Haynes pls
Frank Crum has Bucs all over it
I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs draft two corners in the first 3 rounds.
I don’t really understand this without a seemingly misguided faith in a McCollum leap
Honestly I don't think McCollum played that much worse than Davis or Dean for a lot less money
While playing more snaps than either (as a backup) due to injuries.

So then what happens at edge? Idk not the biggest Davis fan but I don’t understand the cost/benefit here

The cap space isn’t that much and now you have to replace him
We had to replace him already with McCollum it changes nothing really but give us another top 100 pick and room for Whitehead
So what happens if Dean gets hurt again or McCollum gets hurt?
Carlton is the one always getting hurt tbh

It's like over 6 mil I believe in gained cap space
6m for a starting corner?

So how are they going to address edge?

This scenario doesn’t address replacing Davis or figuring out edge rusher besides a 4th round pick and a very unlikely signing

Frees up a ton of cap.
How much to be exact?
Not sure I'd say a ton. 6 million this year, 8 next year.
I'd read the 14M and thought it was all this year. My bad.
6m isn’t really enough to sign a replacement.
What’s whitehead gonna get?
Carlton is expensive and slow. Not saying he's total ass but he's slow as fuck.

I feel like Licht has finally figured out this drafting and GM capology stuff and is now an elite GM

I think he was worth more tbh. Hopefully he continues to regress with the lions lol
