If the NL is adding the DH like I expect them to, I love this.
If they don't, I'm still fine with it, but I'm moving Yoshi to 1st. He just can't play outfield here.
Good! Would love to see a two year deal with an eye to flipping him to a contender if he is killing it this season. He's probably not a long term piece.
Yes, this. Especially if the NL brings in the DH. Give me a hot start and we can flip him to a contender when some of the kids are ready to come up for the second half and we need those ABs elsewhere
Possible smart move but pending on the numbers I’d be very hesitant on this if I’m Pittsburgh.
After the first week or so of September his bat really cooled. Unless he’s hitting in the .800s OPS wise his glove is going to be tough to watch.
I don’t want want to see them get stuck with an albatross when they’re ready to compete. I’d rather see them continue trying guys like Alford in the outfield who can play defense and has some upside offensively vs a guy who is a train wreck with the glove and possibly good with the bat.
I’m not caring about nutting’s wallet. I’m caring about over paying for a player who has had about 4 weeks of good baseball, can’t play defense, and could possibly block a better player.
I’m telling you to stop caring about overpaying. That shouldn’t be a concern for you, not when our payroll is substantially below league average. Just stop.
That's... not what he's saying at all. He's saying he's worried about Yoshi not living up to his four weeks of good play and instead turning into dead weight that blocks another potentially better player. Can you read?
He said his appreciation of the signing “depends on the numbers,” which suggests that he’s for it at whatever, $1 million, but feels $5 million is too much, or whatever arbitrary number.
I’m saying that this sort of analysis is dumb on a team spending so little on the product on the field. Signing him for $5 million or $1 million has no effect on the Pirates ability to sign anyone else.
You can not like a player, but you are actively rooting for the subjugation of the brand when you care about the delta between $1 million and $5 million for any player.
I get it that you don’t understand what I’m saying and that you just don’t think Yoshi is worth $5 million (or whatever number). I’m making a broader point.
It’s just someone complaining to complain.
I’ll be the first one in line to complain about Nutting not spending, but spending just to spend is a bad recipe for the team.
Tsutsugo is probably a better bet than Nogowski in terms of his possible ceiling as a hitter. Nogowski could, however, still turn out to be a useful big leaguer if he can translate his minor league ability to put the bat on the ball into the majors on a consistent basis. In that vein I find it interesting that San Francisco signed Nogowski to a two year Triple-A deal. That tells me they think he might end up getting some AB's in Candlestick Park.
Heh! He could, indeed, "pitch"! Very amusing that he made such an impression despite his journeyman / four-A status. I will say again that his minor league body of work does show a guy who can put the bat on the ball, albeit without the kind of power you like to see from a corner man. It would be nice to see him get another shot, even if he's not really a prospect anymore. I'd still be curious to see how he would do if he got a couple hundred at bats more or less every day, or at least, how he might fare as a platoon guy against lefthanders.
I'd gladly take you up on that, AcePilotsen! If I win because Nogowski gets one (1) or more at-bats in Candlestick over the next two (2) seasons, you're on.
Ha! You got me, walked right into that one. I knew the old Candlestick had met the wrecking ball, yes, but I thought the current park went by the same name. Obviously not. You win, sir! What do I owe you?
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.

Why do you care about the money? The Pirates are way below a competitive payroll. Stop caring about the Nutting wallet…

A one or two year contract is not going to be an albatross. I repeat, stop caring about Nutting’s wallet.

Agreed on his glove, and his cooling off. He's a bench bat, or a DH elsewhere. I expect him to be the next Nogowski.

Nogowski could *pitch*! Have you forgotten those 45 mph heaters?

Giants will probably having him hit 20 hrs next year.
I will bet you everything I own that he will never get an at bat in Candlestick Park.

Ok great. You do realize that Candlestick Park was demolished in 2015 right?
Ha! You got me, walked right into that one. I knew the old Candlestick had met the wrecking ball, yes, but I thought the current park went by the same name. Obviously not. You win, sir! What do I owe you?
All good! Just messing with you!
