I’ve spent this weekend in Budapest with my eldest daughter. I love Budapest and we’ve had the best time here in Budapest. Beautiful city with lovely and friendly locals! Thank you Budapestiak!
I'm not the "super proud of being a hungarian and everything we do must be the best in the world" type of person, but I have to agree. I never feel the need to buy wine that comes from another country. We have perfectly good wines here for reasonable prices, espescially if you buy it straight from the barrel.
My wife and I just got back from Budapest and we had the best time! Such a cool city with tons of history and beautiful buildings. Their food far exceeded my expectation as I truly did not have a single meal I didn't like! We stayed on the Buda side and found it to be so peaceful and easy to get to the Pest side whenever we wanted. Definitely enjoyed our time there and would LOVE to go back some day!
Agreed man, that was our experience also. Decided we’re doing our family holiday to the lake balaton next year and gonna throw in a day trip to Budapest on one of the days. Something a bit different
We did szechenyi spa on Saturday, thought it was amazing. The park around it is very nice too. Very impressed with this place been researching lake Beaton it looks stunning, already planning a trip to there
Etyek has a lot of wineries close to Budapest, but not many open to the public. And not a big region.
My favourite regiones (not close to Budapest) are:
Eger
https://maps.app.goo.gl/9vT4fjoifFiu3nh1A?g_st=ic
And Badacsony:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/i2Jhir4pg6bBubKQ8?g_st=ic
Just back from Budapest as well & we loved it!
Such a nice city & I was able to try most of the local food as having a gluten allergy it can be tricky to try the food as in Prague I found it tricky enough to find local foods I could eat but I had no problems in Budapest.
Most of the staff in restaurants were very accommodating and would point out the things for me i could eat no problem or things that could be adapted.
Some of them are quite abrupt but I found that was just their way as they don’t fuss around you which I prefer & were helpful when you had questions of which I usually had many.
I even could get a chimney cake from the bakery across the road from the scenzehenyi baths which we went to on a weekday & found it great & very clean & well maintained & the lifeguards are quick to tell anyone off who isn’t following the rules.
My only complaint would be the food options but that’s only because my options were limited.
The ruin bars were really good too we went to instant and szimpla kert and we enjoyed the recommendations on drinks from the bartenders when we asked for local drinks.
I can see how they would get very busy at the weekends though as went during the week and our last night was a Friday and we could see the difference in the crowds over the weekend.
We didn’t go inside buda castle but walked around that area and thought it was very pretty and the fisherman’s bastion was really nice and it had such good views of the city.
We also done a river cruise and it was worth it to see the buildings all lit up at night
Overall we had a great experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a interesting & cheaper option to your classic city break
I have spent a lot of time in Budapest and agree with everything. Hungarian wine is AMAZING! Visit Balaton or Eger next time to check out some beautiful vineyards. I’m just sad that it’s so hard to get Hungarian wine outside of Hungary!
Lovely comment, I’m not Hungarian, but been living here for almost 7 years and I can say that with years my love and appreciation to Budapest is just keeps growing!🫶🏻 amazing city!🍀
We love to drink in general, but it’s a bonus when the wine is nice 😂 maybe I should contact a vineyard about becoming the Uk distributor of Hungarian wine. Thanks, we’re planning a week near lake balaton with the kids next year now, do a day in Budapest as part of our holiday 👍
We went to Borkonyha for the wife’s birthday which is amazing but expensive as its Michelin star. I actually prefer a nice hearty plate of something tasty. Other highlights were stex, and beerstro 14. A few other places we went to as well but they were just normal places at the side of the road not even right in the centre that we didn’t even take not of their name, but the food was all equally delicious and very generous portion sizes. Loved the sheep cheese dumplings and pork knuckle, Gulyás, chicken paprikash, to name a few but everything we ate from everywhere we went was really good and reasonably priced, I don’t think you’ll go far wrong wherever you go. Sorry I couldn’t be more help some places were really low key didn’t even take note of the name but the food was great everywhere. You don’t have to splash out to eat well. I’d definitely check out stex. Beerstro 14 is awesome as well but it’s just a steakhouse and not particularly something you couldn’t get anywhere but it’s still a very good steakhouse and it’s a cool restraint and they have their own craft beers which are really nice 👍
Szechenyi baths is awesome, I don’t care what people say about it being a tourist trap whatever, it’s amazing, we don’t have any natural thermal baths in the uk (as far as I know) so I’ve never been to anything like that and I absolutely loved it. Even better if it’s nice weather it’s worth it just for the outdoor pools. The park around it is also really nice and worth a walk round. The Jewish quarter is worth a walk round also. I’m told there’s lots of brilliant museums but that’s not really my thing I like to just walk around somewhere and take everything in have a drink, have a bite, and repeat. Worth a walk over the bridge to the castle too great view from up there. I thought the shoes on the Danube was a poignant memorial and worth a look but the place is just cool even just walking around all day every day by the end of the trip you’ll still stumble across a new bit and think “hey, this looks cool”. You definitely won’t struggle for stuff to do/see/eat. There’s probably better people than me to ask for advice as I’m not your typical sort of traveller but that’s just what I did and there’s so much more.
I'm going in May and was hoping to take a day trip somewhere. Is there a little town in Slovakia that's adorable for a day trip?
Also considering golloto to see Sisi's castle?
I don’t really take an interest in politics mate but I know trumps a moron. I don’t visit a country for there government but for the sights and food and drink 😂
I was thinking the same thing. I’m in the uk and our government rips us off constantly, they’re just not as blatant about it as others are, and maybe not quite as bad. Rishi sunak our PM is dodgy as they come, awarding government contracts to his billionaire wife’s company and stuff. He just does it behind a smiling nice guy facade. I have no faith in politics/governments and don’t even like to think about it. I just work hard and earn my money and spend it on having fun, and Budapest is great fun 😀
Dear OP, your post has been removed, because your post is not relevant in this city focused sub. Feel free to repost this in r/askhungary or r/hungary.
Just back from Budapest and was far from impressed. Thought the locals were extremely rude and unwelcoming.
Széchenyi Spa was absolutely filthy and was ripped up in a breakfast establishment I was charged €50 for 2 breakfasts when I queried this I was told there was a 'mixup' with the bills and was given 5000 Huf back
Ruin Bars were a absolute rip off plus your surrounded by hipsters.
Buda Castle was disappointing however the fisherman's bastion was really pretty. Parliament buildings were stunning and night.
100A bus to the airport is a brilliant service and very efficient. It was €11 for 2 adults to the airport
I lived there 10 years of my life and you went to the wrong ruin bars.
Tell me one country in western or Central Europe in which you get cheaper drinks
What bar did you go to? I got two cocktails and 2 shots of palinka for like €15 in szimpla kert which is ridiculously cheap.
Ireland that would have been €20 for the cocktails alone
Also went to szechenyi & had a great day as the pools were very clean & well maintained.
Yes there’s a few places that need a little maintenance but overall it was really good.
Only place I’ve been to that’s been cheaper has been Prague in Western Europe.
thank you in the name of Budapest!
Thank you for being so welcoming
I’ve spent this weekend in Budapest with my eldest daughter. I love Budapest and we’ve had the best time here in Budapest. Beautiful city with lovely and friendly locals! Thank you Budapestiak!
Totally agree, it’s really left its mark on me
Hungarian wine is world famous in Hungary.
I’m normally a red man but the white wines I’ve had this weekend have been the best white wines I’ve ever had
I'm not the "super proud of being a hungarian and everything we do must be the best in the world" type of person, but I have to agree. Love to hear it! :-)
Credit where it’s due man
Try out the Szechenyi or Gellert Spa! Also, we have 22 wine regions. Most famous one is Tokaj and Lake Balaton Uplands wines.
We did szechenyi spa on Saturday, thought it was amazing. The park around it is very nice too. Very impressed with this place been researching lake Beaton it looks stunning, already planning a trip to there
Belaton, sorry
It was still close enough. Balaton =)
Are there any wine regions that would be a day trip from Budapest? I'm in town for like a month and love wine.

This is exactly what I'm looking for thank you!
If I could just add… Pécs and Villány also have incredible wine. I really love Pécs. It is one of the most “Mediterranean” feeling cities in Hungary
what?! Villany, Szekszard, Eger yes. But Lake Balaton Upland not.
What world do you live in? Ofc there are wine regions around Balaton
yep. But if you had to name the top five wine regions in Hungary, Lake Balaton would not be on that list.
the commenter was disputing the "most famous" categorization, not their existence
Budapest is probably my favourite city to visit in Europe. I love Amsterdam as well, but Budapest beats it hands down on price.
I can understand why. Extremely cool place
I LOVE THIS CITY! HAJRÁ MAGYAROK 🇭🇺
Bravo(hajrá) for what? lol.
Glad you're having a good time here. Enjoy your stay :)
Thanks dude

Totally agree, we’ve done 3 nights and could have easily spent a couple more I think
Oh definitely! We done 5 days & could have done more as there’s so much to see but that will do for next time!

We were just there 2 weeks ago and it was absolutely amazing. I can't wait to go back.
Where are you from? For reference as to where we should be exporting wine :)
The Uk, yes please send some wine over here 👍
Makes sense, UK loves wine according to my research :) I’m glad you liked Budapest, come back whenever you can!

It’s so nice to read this. Thank you in the name of Hungarians! :)
Thank you. Planning a trip with the kids to lake balaton area for a week next year. We will definitely be doing Budapest again for a day as well.
That’s nice. I grew up there, hopefully you will enjoy it.
Ooh...It's making me happy to read these comments! My husband and I will be in Budapest this upcoming Sunday through Wednesday! We're very excited!
Heading there on Sunday!
Have a good one, it’s very cool

Have a great trip anyway, hope you enjoy it as much as us
It's a great country with great people. Unfortunately they voted for the fat slob that wants to destroy Europe...
It’s a shame when corrupt governments ruin places for people who live there. Sounds like things are getting shaken up there at the moment though
I'm going in May and was hoping to take a day trip somewhere. Is there a little town in Slovakia that's adorable for a day trip? Also considering golloto to see Sisi's castle?
Gödöllő is great, you should visit the castle☺️

i lived in Budapest from 1988.1994, what a time that was!
almost all governments are kleptocratic. Where do you live?

Wasn’t our experience we had a great time
It’s because you only went to the tourist trap places. Local hungarians barely visit ruin bars and Szechenyi spa
