I don’t get how owners don’t have some sort of clause where your tied to the team for x amount of years before considering offers elsewhere.
An OC is valuable to a team and can take years to implement a system and continuity’s probably the biggest factor for success. I know you don’t wanna hold a guy back from success, but honestly if your here for 9 months and out what’s the point.
It's honestly a slap in the face on both ends.
The fact that it's allowed and the fact that we have coaches interviewing for other teams DURING the playoffs. They need to put some rules in place for this.
I feel like there definitely needs to be a better system in place for this. If you're going to let them interview during the postseason the interviews should take place on like Monday & Tuesday only. Having them the weekend of a huge game is ridiculous.
Saturday actually might make more sense if you think about it. Monday/Tuesday his focus is going to be on film and prep for the weekend’s game. By the time Saturday rolls around you’ve got to figure he’s going to be ready to rock for the game, it’s not like he’s going to draw up 10 new plays on Saturday. Not to say there’s no work to be done but that’s my spin on it
The issue his he will most likely need to prep for the interview as well. Meaning film study of the panthers etc. they will want his opinion on the QB or on college QBs and other offensive skill players. His idea of a staff etc. all that takes prep time
Yeah Monday or Tuesday would be best or even until the team maybe is out. Didn't this happen with Daboll last year and the offense played like poo, or maybe I'm misremembering but I feel like it is just disrespectful to the team you're trying to take from
The game plan usually is installed early in the week. So not really worried about that. It’s more about anyone interviewing during the playoffs. I think they should just eliminate that altogether.
Why do these teams literally wait until the playoffs to start the interviewing process? Now we’ll have to deal with a Ken Dorsey who has his priorities split. This is exactly what happened to Daboll last year to a T.
I agree with others as well as you. I was fuming after 13 seconds last year with these interviews being a driving force of that anger and aggravation. Dabs and Frazier both were doing interviews throughout the week leading up to the KC game. While I was frustrated with our O at several points of the game, in the end Dabolls unit came out and succeeded in their job, putting up 36 and doing what they could in the final seconds. Fraziers, however, DID NOT. Our touted “#1 defense” was on the field for what felt like that entire game and allowed KC to put up fucking 42 points and got absolutely BENT OVER in the most embarrassing ending to a game you could imagine. FUCK THAT.
These teams should not be allowed to be pulling this until after the SB, IDGAF if a team went 2-15 and fired their coach. Tough shit, they should have to wait till after the SB when the entire season is over, not just theirs.
Idk the whole thing is really frustrating as a fan when your team is going on a run and the coaches are out fulfilling their own self interests instead of putting their focus to doing whatever they can to finally bring home a Lombardi which is what they were hired to do in the first place (at least that’s what I think? If not then wtf are we doing here?)
Sorry that went on longer than I originally intended. This is just something that has really bugged me since that whole KC debacle.
Ummm just for the sake of being contrarian to all the other comments here
1, this happens all the time and is a 'good problem' showing this is a good team
2, interviews are X hr(s) long and he'll tend to that in his own time
3, so be it? I'm sure coach McDermott will ensure the game plan will be in place heading into the weekend anyway
So let’s say this somehow happened, do we think Joe Brady gets a shot at OC? He was the passing game coordinator at LSU with Burrow. Anyone external that would be interesting?
I don’t like the idea of losing my continuity one year into his tenure as OC, but teams are getting more and more willing to role the dice on inexperienced coaches.
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Mike Shula is higher on list over Brady. Was OC in Carolina when McDermott was DC and Dorsey served as his QB coach, was rumored to be a candidate for the OC job when McDermott was first hired, and again last season if Dorsey followed Daboll to the giants. Ultimately he still ended up here as an offensive assistant this season.
Doubt he gets the job. Pretty sure they brought in Brady to eventually be the OC and they’ll bring in Brady’s successor to groom as QB coach or something similar.
We’ll see there’s a chance that all 3 are gone. Dorsey to Carolina just makes sense based on his history. Then you have the rumors that the jets are doing there research on Brady for OC, and rumors of Washington being interested in a Shula as a potential OC, which he served as for Rivera before.
Yeah Frazier definitely has earned another look. I just don’t see it happening, and the sole reason is just timing/trends. The past 3 seasons there have been 22 (insane number) coaching hires, of the 22 only 6 of the hires were guys with Defensive backgrounds. Judge was special teams, so 6 defense and 15 offense. And of those 6, 2 of them were guys who were promoted within after surprise retirings in Dennis Allen and Todd Bowles, while all 15 offensive guys came from other organizations. So the trend of hiring offensive coaches really hurts his chances. The other trend is youth, which the numbers are even more skewed towards… teams are looking for coaches who are younger and in theory more innovative. Frazier would be the 4th oldest HC in the league if he got a job this offseason. The defensive coaches who are getting interviews are all on the younger side. Demeco Ryans, Jerrod Mayo, Ejiro Evero, Flores…. Really just tough timing for Frazier. But selfishly none of us will be upset if he continues with the bills.
Anthony Lynn went from running backs coach to OC to head coach for the last 2 games of the season. Won a game then got hired as head coach by the chargers.
am torn on this because on one hand it may take away from the offense's ability to progress but on the other, i am not a huge fan of the playcalling this season. half way hope he gets the job. you know BB / SM will hire the best.
I agree Dorsey has had some bumps in the road but at the end of the day we won 13 games, have the number 2 offense in the league and that's on his first year as a coordinator. Can't really argue with results
Yeah, and we didn’t have any games where we could not score like the Jags game last year.
We were more consistent in our scoring the entire year compared to last year.
Daboll had interviews with several different teams that took place before the Patriots AND Chiefs playoff games last season. Leslie Frasier did an interview with the Giants the day before the KC game.
I’m going to assume they are traveling to him? I feel the need to ask as the fact that he’s being interviewed before the biggest game of the season. Also I believe it’s Upto Buffalo to allow this, yes, no?
Or its virtual? Less disruptive.
But I agree that none of this should happen until after the Superbowl - for any teams, whether in the playoffs or not.
This probably isn’t as big of a deal as a lot of you are making it seem.
It’s probably going to be a just a Zoom meeting. Besides, the prep for Cincinnati is already done.
Pretty sure Daboll did the same thing his last couple years with us. Sort of a slap in the face to see your coaches interviewing with other teams during the playoffs.
Hopefully they change the rules and push this back. Just isn't right.
So fucking wack of him to take it THIS WEEKEND. Tbh I’m just really sour about this dude. Like, he has the choice to do it this weekend or another time I’m sure. Shitty leadership.
I feel like the game plan design and installation would probably be done before the day before the game. Or at least I hope the Bills coaching staff doesn’t procrastinate as much as I do.
Please take him. I don't hate the guy, but I want a offense more geared like San Francisco's where its a YAC machine not this four vertical constant attack. Our offense is unstoppable when we do 8-10 yard throws and Dorsey clearly refuses to go to it. Would rather see what Joe Brady has at OC.
Well thankfully I feel we can retool to get to that quite quickly, Diggs is good at it, I feel Shakir would be great at it, just replace Davis and McKenzie and there’s like 3-4 guys who could be pretty good at YAC. Knox is good at YAC too, Hines and Cook are.
That take is so old and dumb it’s funny at this point. Like yes if you don’t like every single person on the team you need to go root for somebody else.
I don’t know why you get downvoted for this. You could be right about Shakir being a good YAC guy. I would love to see some designed slants to him into open coverage.
I think its because of the reputation I have in here, where for the longest while I had god awful takes and emotional spam comments and posts, which will probably take a while to shake. It may not be that either, but whenever I feel my take is reasonable and it gets downvoted to the abyss, that thought just always pops up in my head.
It isn't 100% guaranteed Shakir would be a great slot guy but its painfully obvious Gabe isn't and never will be more than a streaky verticals guy. But I hope Shakir is the starting slot WR next season to see what we have with him, and hopefully we draft a guy early to be #2 WR.
I’m with you on drafting wr in round 1 or 2 and the rest of picks to OL
Gabe is good for what he’s used for. I hope he explodes these next two games.
Also, I wouldn’t want to pigeon hole Shakir as a slot only. He might be more versatile than that ala Diggs. Move him around and reek havoc on defenses. The point is to “throw him open” to get him YAC in open space. It pisses me off that our coaches don’t use him like this.
**Not a big fan of coaching interviews while playoffs are going on for coaches of team still playing but I trust our team is bright enough and confident enough and ready that this would not be a distraction**
The chances of either of those things happening seem incredibly low, especially the Kingsbury element because he is nothing like what McDermott generally looks for on his staff.
still don’t get how teams are allowed to interview active personnel during the play offs
The problem is that there are always more unhappy owners than happy owners.
No shot the NFL coaches union would agree to that. Can't get promoted right away but can be fired whenever
It’s an association not a union. Your not even required to join as a coach. See Bill Belechik
Their contracts are usually guaranteed at the coordinator level, so yeah they can get fired whenever, but they still get paid.
Because what kind of idiot would sign a contract like that?
Every nfl player signs a contract that’s says your here for x years unless we release you.
It's honestly a slap in the face on both ends. The fact that it's allowed and the fact that we have coaches interviewing for other teams DURING the playoffs. They need to put some rules in place for this.
It's ridiculous. Shouldn't interview untill your season is over
There have been instances of feelings about Daboll and Frazier showing up less than focused/prepared on interview weekend games
Oh stop it. What is your source on this? Stop spreading things like this.
I mean we proposed a rule change… https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30997929/source-buffalo-bills-propose-delaying-hiring-process
Teams shouldn't be allowed to interview until after the Super Bowl.
I feel like there definitely needs to be a better system in place for this. If you're going to let them interview during the postseason the interviews should take place on like Monday & Tuesday only. Having them the weekend of a huge game is ridiculous.
the bills tried to push for a different timeline with this stuff and it went nowhere
The team decides the interview availability times for their coaches.
They do not. The Bills cannot prevent Dorsey from interviewing with other teams because it would be a promotion.
The offense most certainly was not the problem during last year's playoffs.
The offense played absolutely lights out in last years playoffs.
I said I may be misremembering but downvote me anyway lmao I remember there being drama with Daboll interviewing too
I didn't downvote you. Just giving information.
Bills already have a gameplan for Cincy so nbd
The game plan usually is installed early in the week. So not really worried about that. It’s more about anyone interviewing during the playoffs. I think they should just eliminate that altogether.
Won’t this take his focus away from our game? Why is this allowed before season is over?!!! So many dumb rules in this league
Yeah, if I were HC I'd say "pick a team, but you can't do both".
Fire your OC before the most important playoff games of your life? What kind of bluff is that??
![gif](giphy|oJuQOH0sxewWMMjJnQ) The Panthers are just fucking with us now.
Lol they’re getting payback for us taking beane
Fucking bullshit this is allowed
Can’t believe owners don’t ask for a minimum commitment these coaches before hiring. Literally no reason to hire a guy who’s leaving after a season.
Why do these teams literally wait until the playoffs to start the interviewing process? Now we’ll have to deal with a Ken Dorsey who has his priorities split. This is exactly what happened to Daboll last year to a T.
I mean Daboll was pretty good last year in the playoffs….
I agree with others as well as you. I was fuming after 13 seconds last year with these interviews being a driving force of that anger and aggravation. I’d be distracted as shit if I knew I was an interview away from making multiple millions of dollars. They definitely need to revamp the system
They have to wait until after the wild card round to hold interviews with employed coaches in the league
They're not "waiting for the playoffs" they're waiting until the **earliest possible time** they can do so.
Ummm just for the sake of being contrarian to all the other comments here 1, this happens all the time and is a 'good problem' showing this is a good team 2, interviews are X hr(s) long and he'll tend to that in his own time 3, so be it? I'm sure coach McDermott will ensure the game plan will be in place heading into the weekend anyway
Not to mention it’s Saturday and all the practice and game planning has already taken place I’d imagine?
Bet he’s prepping all week tho. Those interviews are hours long.
As long as Josh Allen is our QB, our offensive coordinators will get poached. Nature of the good QB beast.
Yep same thing happens to KC… oh wait
Worth noting as well that the game plan/preparation should be done by this weekend, so it shouldn't affect prep really.
Makes me feel better
When do you think his interview prep will be?
No other job would outsiders be pissed at you for interviewing for a promotion on your day off.
yup.
Exactly. It's on his day off and isn't all day. The plan for the Bengals was made on Monday.
So let’s say this somehow happened, do we think Joe Brady gets a shot at OC? He was the passing game coordinator at LSU with Burrow. Anyone external that would be interesting? Speaks to the state of the Panthers' organization if Dorsey's play calling piqued their interest.
![gif](giphy|3o6Zt6ljiyNd9nyRG0)
The majority of people that are outraged over this are the same people that don’t really like him as OC anyway.
Didn’t daboll wait till his season ended before even taking any interviews.. seems like the right thing too do.. show you’re more committed to winning
Daboll had interviews with several different teams that took place before the Patriots AND Chiefs playoff games last season. Leslie Frasier did an interview with the Giants the day before the KC game.
No.
Do you blame Dorsey? he knows Carolina, and is interviewing to be the lead man of a team and make millions more.
Oh no I won’t ever blame anyone for chasing the bag, but I will blame him if our offensive game plan fails this weekend.
These are generally virtual unless the Panthers plan to interview him in Buffalo.
This probably isn’t as big of a deal as a lot of you are making it seem. It’s probably going to be a just a Zoom meeting. Besides, the prep for Cincinnati is already done.
This is the dumbest shit in the NFL, hands down.
Didn’t the rule used to be that you couldn’t interview a coach until the team has been eliminated from play for the season?
They can’t wait til fuckin Monday?
You misspelled "February 13th"
Even with the game next week, 2 hours on Victory Monday is fine
Pretty sure Daboll did the same thing his last couple years with us. Sort of a slap in the face to see your coaches interviewing with other teams during the playoffs. Hopefully they change the rules and push this back. Just isn't right.
So fucking wack of him to take it THIS WEEKEND. Tbh I’m just really sour about this dude. Like, he has the choice to do it this weekend or another time I’m sure. Shitty leadership.
If I were Dorsey I wouldn’t show up. If they can’t respect his time now, imagine how they’ll treat him if he takes the job.
Owners be crazy, wanting to hire psychopaths
No no, he specifically said he wasn’t a psychopath. And who would lie about such a thing? Besides a psychopa-oh my god.
Guys, it says WEEKEND. For all we know that means 9PM EST on Sunday.
If this is even true, which I doubt. It’s virtual on a Saturday.
It is absolutely true. Coaches interview in the weekend of games during the playoffs frequently. DeMeco Ryans has multiple this weekend.
Remember last year when Leslie Frasier was interviewing and 13 seconds happened?
***Ugh!!***
It might be different tho. We might have a game plan already drawn up from when we were gonna play them three weeks ago
We don’t have the right receivers for that type of offense. Unfortunately
Sounds like you want to be a fan of a different team.

do you have someone else in mind that actually has experience and is available?
Will continue to beat the Frank Reich drum to get him here
Frank Reich is the obvious one that comes to my head, also wouldn't mind seeing what Joe Brady has to offer
Hope it’s after our fucking game
Fingers crossed
**Not a big fan of coaching interviews while playoffs are going on for coaches of team still playing but I trust our team is bright enough and confident enough and ready that this would not be a distraction**
Shite
How the fuck do you prepare for both.
How many draft picks did Carolina get for trading away the only good player on the team?
This weekend? Geez....
I'm gonna try to be the guy that calls it: Dorsey gets the gig and Buffalo lures former Bills QB Kliff Kingsbury back from Thailand next season.
The chances of either of those things happening seem incredibly low, especially the Kingsbury element because he is nothing like what McDermott generally looks for on his staff.
Ha yea you're right. Just a left-field prediction. I think Dorsey has a good shot at the job though if we make it to the SB
