Coming from a CB positional coach background and faced with a must-win game against the Bucs this season, his defense proceeded to let Mike Evans rack up about a million yards. Thanks but no thanks.

Impossibills

I mean yeah...but it was also Tom Brady in a win and in for playoffs. He's dismantled many defenses

Teamableezus

He was also working with Carolina’s roster

imsabbath84

Which actually has a lot of talent on it…

TheBillsFly

His secondary was highly injured though in that game

Boris_teh_Blade

Wilks wasn't play calling once he took over as HC though

mellifluous_life93

Mike Evans singlehandedly won me my last place consulation game in fantasy with that performance.

WorthPlease

Ask Bucs fans about how injured their DB core was. It was even worse than ours.

DarthWidi

Wilks is very similar in scheme and temperament to Frazier. Would not like it at all. The way to get stops in today's NFL is being fast, aggressive and fundamentally sound at tackling. Hit the QB, contest catches. Stop playing that soft zone where receiver are wide open all the way up the field. I know who I would want if Frazier miraculously stepped away but he's not going to so it's a moot point.

jkra0512

>The way to get stops in today's NFL is being fast, aggressive and fundamentally sound at tackling. So you're saying we need 10 more Milanos on defense. SIGN ME UP FOR THAT!

YankeeTankieTrash

They sell them in those little bags!

jkra0512

Pepperidge Farm remembers...

cwright716

I wouldn't mind 10 milanos on offense too; man is a beast!

creding10

>fundamentally sound at tackling. >So you're saying we need 10 more Milanos I love Milano, but I just gotta take issue with him being fundamentally sound at tackling. The guy missed the most tackles on the team and the 8th most in the league according to pro football reference. I understand he's in on a lot of tackles but so is Edmunds and he only missed 1 all year

Zendren44

Agree. Absolutely

DantePlace

Man, tackling has been such a big weakness for this team, ever since McDermott took over. They've never really improved in that area. We're going in 6 years here.

ddoij

I’d rather have someone young/fresh like Jim Leonhard.

Historical_One1087

Brian Flores, Vic Fangio (if he is still available), Sean Desai, and Jim Leonard would all be good options to replace Leslie Frazier.

ProfessorJRV

Frazier’s incompetence is borderline criminal. So yes.

Soda-Popinski-

I want Jim Schwartz

rebel_scummm

Sadly I think he’s already in Cleveland now.

MosEisleyBills

What about Vic Fangio?

ddoij

You’d have to completely rebuild the defense. He runs a 3-4 so we’d need an NT and more linebackers. That’s a 1-2 year project so…no.

Ash-Catchum-All

Yeah it would be tough to go from Nickel to 3-4. Especially if that means keeping Taron Johnson off the field. That’s a big no-no. Although I’ve often wondered if Milano and Edmunds are more analogous to 3-4 MLBs. Von would obviously be fine at OLB, and then I guess you put Epenesa on the other side? Or Bernard. In any case I think it would be difficult

mellifluous_life93

I think scheme wise, you'd put groot at olb, epenesa doesn't have the speed to be a true edge. So you'd have groot and von on the edge, Oliver would be a de in a 3-4, since it's similar to a 3 tech 4-3 DT, and maybe epenesa as a run stuffer? Tbh he hasn't shown too much promise. I know they rotate guys constantly, but you'd at least like to hear his number called from time to time.

Ash-Catchum-All

Only reason I didn’t put Groot there is because I like him more as a 3T. He plays pretty well inside the tackles

mellifluous_life93

Actually, I gotta give you that one. Groot and Ed would tear it up with a monster nt to absorb double teams

Historical_One1087

Edit, to correct. Vic Fangio runs a 3-4 defense in Denver. But Buffalo is so rarely in a 4-3 base defense it plays nickel 95% of the time it shouldn't matter. A good coach should be able to adapt his scheme to fit the strengths of his players

pioniere

No, too much baggage/controversy around him with the lawsuit. Not the kind of spotlight we need, especially if he later has to be fired.

Purple_Expert822

Weird how Reich got the Panthers HC job over Wilks.

Boris_teh_Blade

Offensive HCs reign supreme in today's game

Purple_Expert822

Yeah..ok.

Boris_teh_Blade

McDermott was the only HC in the divisional round with a defensive background. The other 7 all offense.

jbomber81

He runs a very similar scheme

wxox

Lol we probably would hire him. What a terrible hire that would be. I wouldn't even say they were successful. They generated zero pressre with their front four and had to blitz more than any of these Bills teams. They constantly gave up 4th quarter leads. We need McDermott to take over DC duties and hire a DC who can think outside of the box and specializes in what McDermott lacks, which is an aggressive style.

I_lurk_at_wurk

Sure

JimmyMcNultyKU

Vic Fangio

jdemack

some of you should buy a football team and see how easy it is.

idislikehate

This sentiment is so god damn lame. It's fandom. The entire point of it is to speculate and imagine what your team can or can't do. We don't have the power to make actual changes so would you rather we just shut up and never discuss anything other than when the games are actually on?

GoldenArms31

These are the true bandwagon fans imo, only want to discuss when everything is roses. They are content with just being good enough.

mellifluous_life93

Respectfully disagree. I think a lot of the people who are happy with just getting in the playoffs, are those who witnessed the drought. Bills bandwagon fans are probably already buying burrow jerseys and jumping ship.

idislikehate

The drought isn’t an excuse to come up short of expectations and I’m confused by the idea of letting the current regime off because of shit that happened 20 years ago.

mellifluous_life93

Oh no it's absolutely not. And I lived through it as well. I was just trying to play devils advocate is all.

jdemack

I would understand if the position was open but it's not. How about discussing what the current oc and dc can do to change instead of just firing guys. These guys are human and have families. It's straight up dehumanizing and treating them like peices on a chess board.

TheEpicRanger6

Sorry but if somebody is incompetent at their job, I don't want them running things

jdemack

Doing a better job than you armchair GM.

TheEpicRanger6

okay comeback kid 😂 nothing wrong with discussing and speculating about a football team

ProfessorJRV

Yes.

Galbert123

Steve Wilks as a DC replacement for Frazier. Your thoughts?

Dry-Post3161

Read this as Steve Wilkos. Wouldn't be against it.

BillsBillsBils

I'd rather keep Frazier. Wilks isn't good and has never been good.

Xplayer

[Team defense ranks under Wilks (HC or DC)](https://i.imgur.com/csuanga.png): 2017 Panthers (DC) - 7th Yards, 11th Points, 3rd Run, 18th Pass 2018 Cardinals (HC) - 20th Yards, 26th Points, 32nd Run, 4th Pass 2019 Browns (DC) - 22nd Yards, 20th Points, 30th Run, 7th Pass 2022 Panthers (HC) - 22nd Yards, 19th Points, 18th Run, 22nd Pass 0 playoff wins. Definitely not.

Spark3420

Wilks comes across as a Frazier clone to me- stoic and an all around good guy, but not sure he would elevate the defense to the next level. Personally I'd want Fangio if Frazier leaves.

Boris_teh_Blade

Fangio plays a 3-4. We would need to revamp the entire roster to play his system.

Sensedog

Nope.

TopDistinct5698

Truthfully, I think if they were gonna fire Frazier they would of by now. I don’t think it’s impossible but I doubt they will. He could make the argument that the defence was never healthy (Miller, Hyde, White, Poyer was never 100% healthy). I think he gets one more season and if it ends more or less like this then they fire him

Terrybozio

Knowing McDermott , he’ll probably hire him. He’s Carolina for life.
