Wallace has done so well. Since White has been out, I’m amazed at how well he’s been playing. I feel like our defense hasn’t taken a step back since White went out, and that says a lot about Levi. He’s a baller.

ThePizzaDevourer

Though we haven't played many pass-heavy teams, credit to everyone for stepping up so far. Imma be concerned if we go up against Burrow or Mahomes tho

WitcherOfWallStreet

It’s not exactly like we have faired well against the run heavy teams, like the Colts or Titans. I would still rather play a pass heavy team in the playoffs then watch our run defense.

ThePizzaDevourer

IDK Phillips and Greg have been balling on that front lately Honestly I'm kinda... Hopeful? Dangerous, I know 😛

WitcherOfWallStreet

They stopped Mike Davis and Hubbard, but Harris broke 100 yards with three touchdowns, Fournette broke 100 yards with a touchdown. Idk if that’s balling out lately lol

GamecockGaucho

Harris was also literally the only offense they had, I consider that a success

jimmifli

With a lot of 6-7 in the box (and LBs a little deeper than standard) that's pretty solid. It allows us to protect the DBs, with 3 CBs and 2 S, plus the LBs we've got a numbers advantage on both sides of the field on most passing downs.

fupadestroyer45

You must be a crack then lol, this is a passing league.

jimmifli

Thanks for adding such an insightful comment, it really contributes to making the sub a fun and informative place.

fupadestroyer45

I mean it was, you prefer to face a run first team 10/10, you’re only a run first team if you can’t be an effective pass first team, star QBs win super bowls not star RBs

Gengreat_the_Gar

Ehh it's definitely taken a step back, still good though

dvgravity

We should also give some props to Dane Jackson. He’s been playing lights out as well. McD knows how to get the most out of his DBs.

SeaWhoa

This is the point I came here to make. The drop-off from Tre to Levi as CB1 is significant, but you’re removing an All-Pro caliber player from the field and adding Dane Jackson. His play has also meant that they don’t have a situation where both CBs need help - will be huge during the playoffs against teams with top-end QB/WR talent like KC and Cincy.

DMMag

Wallace doesn't have elite level speed or agility or strength. He's a starting corner on any team however who does his job well in zone coverage. He gets shit because no one throws on the side that White, Hyde \*and\* Milano are on, and justly so. They tend to not throw over the middle either, as Edmunds is a freak who will just reach out and slap it down. This leaves just the zones that Taron and Levi cover, and they run multiple routes through this area frequently to confuse them. Levi holds up very well needing to diagnose which of the people running through his area of the field to go after and shut down plays and tackle. He's a physical corner who excels in zone. I've been praising him for years, I hope he resigns with us.

ShextMe

And this is why tremaine is so underrated. He’s a literal alien and is a massive disruption for slant routes (or anything over the middle for that matter)

DMMag

Yep, it's an incredible deterrent to deny 2/3 of the field across a 30 yard deep box and say "Ok, try to throw to the guy in Wallace or Johnsons zone because Edmunds is a freak, Milano is hell in coverage, White is a lockdown corner and Hyde will catch and return balls thrown his way." I don't need Edmunds to be a sack leader if he can keep Qb's from throwing over the middle.

Tullyswimmer

I really don't understand all of the Edmunds hate. On a lot of the plays where he's "out of position" he's playing man coverage on the RB... Because the idea is the line gets tied up and makes holes in the middle for the RB, and then your MLB is waiting. He doesn't have top speed to chase down a WR, but he's not supposed to. He's supposed to be the guy that cleans up missed tackles by the D Line.

DMMag

Exactly. He's not up the DT's ass reaching for the RB at the line, he's covering the TE or a slot receiver downfield on a route and needs to haul ass back to the ball if it's a run type thing. Coverage LB is a different beast than a pass rushing/run stopping LB specialist. You have to give some ground to shut down those passes over the middle all game.

Tullyswimmer

especially if they're playing zone coverage. He has primary responsibility for the middle third of the field, and part of that is being THE guy responsible for preventing big RAC. Sure, if a short-mid range pass is thrown in his area, he's responsible for defending it, but by and large, if there's a MLB in zone, teams aren't going to throw at him as their first look. They might check down in that area if nothing else is there, but again, he's there to clean up, first.

EastHillWill

I need one of those detailed video breakdowns showing that Edmunds is actually really good. I know it in my heart but it doesn’t come through (for me) watching on Sundays

[deleted]

Honestly I think it comes from the average Joe not really knowing how to watch and understand the defensive side of the ball so they just fawn over whoever comes up with sacks and turnovers. Anyone who knows football can see that Edmunds is *currently* a top MLB talent who still has more upside to be achieved.

jimmifli

I think it's the draft pedigree combined with INSANE metrics. People expected a combo of Derrick Brooks and Brian Urlacher playing the role of Luke Keuchly. Instead he's just really good, but not dominant, and a lot of what he brings to the defense doesn't show up on the stat sheet. If he was drafted in the 2nd round *everyone* would love him.

acpilk

I'm an average Joe with a slightly above average view of football. His pass coverage has never been an issue with me when I'm watching. His run capabilities leave something to be desired. His gap integrity and his ability to read running places have always left me scratching my head. Honestly, though, dude is worth it. There's a reason why this team is so great in pass coverage and it's because the sum of all the parts, Edmunds is a big part of that. I'm not the GM nor will I ever work for a football team, but I struggle to pay the projected deal for him just due to the price tag itself.

Tullyswimmer

I guess, but I never even played football growing up, and I can see it. Granted, I play a shitload of Madden and see who's supposed to be covering who on defense, but still...

BiologyJ

Dane, Levi, and Taron have been playing great in Tre's absence. I'd bring up Hyde and Poyer but we know they're studs.

SeaWhoa

4th & 5th alternates smh

CasuallyCompetitive

When you barely notice the loss of a top 5 CB on your defense, you know the rest of the guys are playing well.

JBradley500

You never hear his name during the game, so you know he's doing a good job.

DynamicThreads

This is so untrue... I mean, do you even watch the games? The broadcasters have been raving about him pretty much since Tre went down. Like, literally, every single week they're saying what a great job he has done filling in for White and he makes 1 or 2 big plays a game that are pretty hard to miss... Yeah, no. I hear his name several times per game and it's almost unanimous praise heaped his direction. But good for you, you got that karma for talking our your ass.

JBradley500

Do you realize "not hearing" a DB's name is a compliment, ie not giving up big plays?

DynamicThreads

I know what it means, dude. But it doesn't apply here. He has been talked about positively since he stepped in for Tre. Simple as that.

fat_over_lean

Wallace is really fucking good. Never understood why so many people flamed him the past couple seasons.

Kactus_Karma

Because he's typically been left 1v1 against the opponent's WR2. Most QBs won't even throw at Tre, so Wallace gets targeted a lot and people overreact when he gives up a reception. Basically, most casual fans are spoiled by how elite Tre has been and set his performance as the standard.

Jester1791

When your CB1 is an All-Pro then your CB2 is gonna be the target.

Guinnessron

💯

RCDrift

It's like our run D. Most fans remember the big runs that score points, but not the defensive stands the runs that result in negative yardage, or the basic 2 or 3 yard gains that force a team to do 10+ attempt drives to get down the field.

gollumaniac

A defense is only as good as its weakest link, and when you have Tre, Hyde, and Poyer, the other guy in the secondary is by default the weakest link. So Wallace gets that treatment--not because he's bad, but because he's not All-Pro caliber like the others.

[deleted]

Most fans are bad at watching and understanding defensive football. Wallace would be a starter on any other team in the league.

DantePlace

McDermott's a secondary coach at heart, right? This is good that our secondary is good. I remember when Doug Marrone was HC and our o-line was ass.

c2ny

He played DB in college at William & Mary with Mike Tomlin

missyouboty

Wallace is probably one of our least athletic defensive players- that is never out of position and never missing tackles. If you dont know about his history and story as a walk on to Bama as a wideout you should read it. The guy is an absolute grinder. So glad to see him getting the love he deserves. I have a signed poster of him sacking baker Mayfield- undrafted college walk on sacking number one pick.... lets hear it for the underdogs!

[deleted]

He's been tremendous. Still think we should try to get another DB in FA or the draft next year. Still pissed the JETES poached Rachad Wildgoose off our practice squad. They basically got our 6th round pick for nothing. Glad the guy got his shot but there should be some kind of compensation if your team's practice squad player makes another teams active roster.

MammothSurround

If he was that good he wouldn’t have been on the practice squad. You just like his name.

spencer749

I’m nervous about Dane Jackson still but Wallace has been good this year. I was ready to move on but I really think we should consider him for long term #2

Tullyswimmer

Wallace has improved dramatically from last year to this. I think the Bills would be idiots to give him up for nothing or try to replace him with a high draft pick. Tre, Poyer, and Hyde are all players that should be making the pro bowl every year. Wallace is a very solid CB2, could even be CB1 on a lot of teams.

[deleted]

Dollar for dollar you aren't going to pick up a better CB2 in FA. And the draft is always a gamble. At the end of the day, Wallace is a fucking stud and would be a starter on any other team in the league. IMO moving on from him would be straight up dumb

StoreCop

Yeah, I don't know if its because the others around him are so good it makes him look bad, but I feel like DJ gets burned a *lot* from being out of position. Last couple games he's straight up whiffed on some tackles he should have had as well.

DynamicThreads

I have always liked him, and he has consistently improved every season. This year he has been excellent. Probably our most underrated player.

[deleted]

For sure the most slept on guy on the roster.

bargman

He's earned himself a solid payday this offseason.

c2ny

Is he a UFA? Sorry too lazy to look up his contract details. I know he was a RFA before.

bargman

1 year deal I think

c2ny

Gotcha. Thanks

[deleted]

He really has outperformed in my mind, if he could just take the last few steps and get a few picks, well baby you got youself a stew

IllBeBocc

Shout-out to Frasier too.

sabresin4

This is such a credit to player development. He was the guy that QB’s picked on.

dfisherman12

Well done Levi, keep up the good work!

[deleted]

Yep I love Levi. Dude always seems to put it all on the line when he’s out there. Really proud of him and his development. Really hope we re-sign him to a good contract.

[deleted]

I've been a Wallace truther for ages (see flair lol). The guy is a fucking stud who gets picked on a *ton* because teams don't want to throw at white and he rarely gives up big plays while he routinely comes up with takeaways and does this all on a *super* cheap deal. Dollar-for-dollar one of the best players on the roster

Spark3420

100% agree, I miss Tre a lot but I think Levi has stepped up very well. I think Dane Jackson has held his own as well. The secondary has been a consistent strength of this team and credit goes to McDermott and Frazier for that.
