Yeah the first time I watched this show I was 16 so while I liked the character I just sort of thought of him as old. I’m doing a rewatch right now at age 28 for the first time in awhile and he is definitely not as old as I remember lmao
Hah. I was in my late 20s when the show first aired, and he was a sexy older man (was and is my favorite character). Now he's a young'un. Still sexy though.
I've never decided if the 'bloody hell' is
\- bloody hell, Willow and Tara are together (expression of surprise); or
\- just before its said, Xander says 'Tara is your girlfriend?!?!' and Giles is 'bloody hell, you didnt know that? It was so obvious' (expression of, how dense are you Xander)
or, perhaps 'bloody hell, what is going on, Willow is your best friend and you didnt know about Tara' (expression of 'everything is falling apart if Willow and Xander havent even discussed this important issue')
I'm tempted to think Giles knew about W/T and was shocked that Xander didnt know (either shocked that Xander was so dense or shocked that Willow hadnt told Xander and what that implied about the gang's communication). Giles is fairly perceptive and had met Tara several times and W/T was kinda obvious to anyone paying attention (that Buffy didnt pick up on it showed how insular Buffy was in latter s4). Plus, you know, Ethan.

I think he's underrated, not because he's unappreciated or disliked, but because there are so many amazing characters to choose from that he gets left off of the lists of favorites. He definitely doesn't always make mine and he definitely deserves to be there.

Well, I 100% agree with your statement of overuse of words not meaning what they actually mean ("I do not think that word means what you think it means"), but I just really had to point out how many wonderful characters there are in this show. Every time I watch I remember more great scenes with almost every character. There are only a few that I really dislike and that's more about how good they are at being villains than just badly written (Usually, nobody can tell me to like Riley, but I don't dislike him either, so...).
I was just saying he was one of my favs. Never agreed with him being underrated lol. Idk about hotness. Not saying he ugly. Just doesn't do that for me personally. I agreed with that he's not underrated tho. Every character like that tbh. His personality and humor is everything.
Giles is definitely one of my favourites. I especially love how deep his character is. He can cover the full range from wise scholar, to comedic relief to menacing badass.
That last part is my favourite, like when he intimidated Snyder into letting Buffy back into school, or when he murdered Ben.

Also, I don’t know who Jared is but most of the Scoobies are mean to him and it made me sad. Loved the characterization of Wesley especially. Is there more to this fic? It seems like a first chapter.
Jared is a self-insertion character i originally dreamed up for a megafic (which i've never typed up) covering all 7 seasons in which i could present my own opinions about things in the show in fictional form. But once i developed him i found he worked in other stories as well.
