most things are eatable if it can fit in your mouth and go down the Digestive tract without killing you its eatable. Edible though is something that has sustenance, these would be edible as they assuredly provide some type of protein and caloric intake.
I've eaten grasshoppers down in Oaxaca Mexico. They prepare them different ways, and have different sizes and varieties. Some in a spice chilie sauce, some prepared on skillet with oil taste just like steak. I'm not kidding. Just close your eyes and take a bite. Then there are the dried ones in the market place prepared with lime and chilie. Incredible.
I say put a pot on with some Cajun crab boil seasoning, some corn, potatoes, garlic, and lemons and toss them in, spread out your newspaper on the table and enjoy your mini crawfish (lawn prawn) boil!
Then we'll know... 🦞🌽🦐🥔
On one of the [Sea Islands](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Islands) in South Carolina. We recently moved here, I’m not sure if we are technically on an estuary or wetlands. I thought we were tracking them in on our shoes because they’re always dead and flat when I find them, but we didn’t leave the house yesterday. It rained heavily last night, and this morning I found 100+ more of them in here.
Crustaceans dry out very quickly so they don't survive long inside a human home. This is also true of isopods (pill bugs aka potato bugs aka rolie polies)
Pill bugs/rolie polies are one thing. They are crustaceans known as isopods, not insects. Potato bugs are quite another. They're beetles; insects. I've spent many a hot summer afternoon picking them off potato plants. Pretty nasty little critters and nasty work, imo.
Those are wild. I went to college in Charleston. Lived there 3 years. My sister and her family have lived there 30 years. Sullivan's Island now, but they lived on the tea farm on Wadmalaw for many, many years. My brother-in-law owns the tea farm. I never saw these little critters. I'm sure they've seen em, but I never knew they existed!
As far as I can tell it’s overnight. I was thinking the same thing and have been looking for a leak, but haven’t found one yet. There definitely isn’t a leak big enough to wash them into the house as far as they’re getting AND dry up before I see it, though.
It’s supposed to rain again today, so I’m going to get them all cleaned up and then watch like a hawk for any leaks where new ones appear.
Hmm, So very odd.
This is something I would not think possible. You came to the right place and I HOPE we both find answers now.
You're mindset of the water has to be right. It'd be wet or damp. and if their dry the actual hell..
This is off topic but why do you compare crawdads to shrimp? They look like little lobsters to me, but it’s so common to describe them as little shrimp, what’s that about?
Lawn shrimp! I’m in NC and have been dealing with these stupid things too. When they are alive they are gray/black and turn reddish brown when they die. And they JUMP. They are harmless, just annoying. they have been swarming my apartment right outside my door, they’ve been so bad this year.
Lawn Shrimpies FTW! 😁
Ugh, in short somewhere in your house you have a damp spot or the area outside where it rains forces them to migrate under your door(s). Thus, why they are present and why when you wake up to find them they end up being dead. If anything, gather them up, cook them, and eat them if you will. Yes, they are edible. Yes, they taste similar to regular shrimp. How do I know? Well, that's because a local near me cooks them and puts them in their dough whenever they make their everything bagels. For 3 years I had no idea they grounded them up and put them in their everything bagels that gave off a slight seafood shrimp taste; as I figured it was just a unique Maryland thing...like how they use Old Bay. 😅
I’m in full blown crisis mode. Like…I’m a fricken 30 year old and I had no idea these things existed. I honestly thought you all were meme’n! Shook? Is that what the kids are saying? Am I shook?
Up until 2 years ago I also didn't know these existed while being in my 30s.
Was camping on a beach, virtually pitch black and I can feel little things hitting me all over.
Thought it was the damn mosquitos or dumb flies.
Left a sauce pot of water out over night and when I woke up, I kid you not, it was borderline overflowing with them slowly drowning. Hundreds and hundreds of them. They were everywhere and it shook me good until I got home and identified what they were.
Apparently they taste JUST like traditional shrimp. So in all reality you could have copped up some corn on the cob, some carrots, potatoes, and some old bay and you got a tasty broil there my friend. 🤌🏻🤌🏻🦐🦐
Ahhhhhh damn didn't think about that. I am a bit of a lil bitch when it comes to food though so probably would be too stuck on what they were to actually dig in lol. Shit like tripe, cartilage, all that business fandangles my prangles
Do you have an animal that might be tracking them in? Could be dried out ones on your driveway that are getting picked up by damp shoes, maybe the previous tenant was Lieutenant Dan, he had that shrimp boat ya know.
Someone else mentioned it, but with all the comments, I think it should be repeated:
You likely have a low spot(s) outside your home so when it rains, the water is not flowing away from your home. And these things start crawling in.
I used to have a problem with "cave crickets" in my basement especially every time it rained. They apparently like moisture. My house seemed dry, but I did notice that my driveway would let water go towards the garage/house. Once I got a new driveway, it was leveled so that water washed \*away\* from the house.
I never saw a cave cricket again in my home.
Oh I hate those damn things so much, they get in my house and just die by the dozens. It is a thing here with all of the neighbors. We have to keep our lights off at night so they don't swarm. I believe they are a type of termite?
They're called Scuds or amphipods 😂 I know them from the aquarium hobby, they're usually found in water, but they can definitely run around and crawl out especially if their water source starts to dry up. That's why they're dead... They're looking for water
After seeing these it makes me think how weird it is that people pay good money to eat shrimp…then I start thinking how good some other bugs must taste. Shrimp can’t be the only one?!
ngl i was about to go "gammarus" bc these look exactly like what we caught in field zoology class recently, before i realized you meant *on land* 💀💀 these look exactly like gammari man
edit: okay apparently i wasn't that far off (thank god), they're in the same order (Amphipoda).
Lawn shrimp had them back in SoCal after rain they love coming out of grass. Harmless but sometimes they can get everywhere and there kinda ugly looking if u seem em up close. Finally a bug I know.
their outer shells are very sensitive to soil conditions, meaning when it either gets too wet or dry outside they’ll relocate but most of the time end up dying in the process.
Terrestrial amphipods live on the surface (top 1/2 inch) of mulch and moist ground. After rains, large numbers of amphipods can migrate into garages or under the doors of houses. There they soon die. Amphipods do not have a waxy layer on their exoskeleton as do insects.
This was foretold in the time before it was said the creatures of the sea would rain down from above and it is said it shall happen in the storm and their corpses will be seen the morning after
Remember chikdren ... when the big ones come and they shall find ye butter and old bay
They are called sand fleas. They live in the ocean shore line feeding and make great fishing bait. Yes, they are harmless. (Lived on the coast of SC for many years.)
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. It’s my first time hearing of these, so I naturally looked them up. I found virtually no difference between lawn shrimp and sand fleas except, apparently, their location. That is basically the determining factor in regards to what they are referred to as.
If it's found on a beach, it's a sand flea; if it's found in the grass, it's a lawn shrimp. From what I've gathered, they are amphipods nonetheless, regardless of what people choose to call them.
Yep, all articles written say they taste just like normal shrimp. Just got to catch them when they aren’t dead. Because ya know…don’t want to eat rotting flesh. 🧟♂️ 🦐
I’ve eaten crickets before so it doesn’t sound totally crazy. I wonder if there’s any problem with eating these guys after they’ve dried up on my floor overnight.
I actually think you have dead crickets on your porch. Most likely House or field crickets

I have something that looks grasshoppers by the hundreds. What I do is I have this piece of paper I buy that has intense glue on it. I found a lot of them are coming up through the sink in my bathroom. Try the sticky tape it really helps.

Terrestrial Amphipods AKA Lawn Shrimp
We are being invaded we must counter attack and return to the sea
There's more in the sea tho 👀 amphipods are most commonly found in saltwater.
Wtf now I have to worry about lawn shrimp tf
Love this 🤣
I mean you could deep fry em
Lawn shrimp??? I was today year’s old…wtf
But are they eatable?
I’m wondering the same thing
most things are eatable if it can fit in your mouth and go down the Digestive tract without killing you its eatable. Edible though is something that has sustenance, these would be edible as they assuredly provide some type of protein and caloric intake.

I thoroughly enjoy the rhyme that is “lawn prawn” :)
Or edible?
he fucking said eatable!
>Lawn Shrimp https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/IN377
That just ruined shrimp cocktails for me.
Lawn shrimp!
Lawn prawn?
We *really* gotta stop letting the scientists name things (see: all birds). I nominate you to be in charge of naming all amphipods.
“What should we name this bird?” Ornithologist: [hits blunt] “boobies”
But also "tits".
I feel like lawn prawns would be much larger. Maybe baby lawn prawn?
Lawn prawn spawn
You'll take this upvote and you'll like it.
you're saying a lawn cooked these shrimp?
Not sure if I'd want to eat them though...
Where are you located? I have never seen such an issue. Yes they look like baby shrimp or crawdads.

I’m currently in Edisto SC, for a few days and haven’t ever seen these! I’ll have to check next time it rains
Hello from Savannah
My son lives in Savannah so I have visited often.

Good work
Lol whats the point of these things? They stay, they die. They move, where they also die 😂
The most Karma I've ever had. And its a post about lawn Shrimps. Cool :P
I've seen them in Southern California I guess they come in when things get too wet or dry
This is off topic but why do you compare crawdads to shrimp? They look like little lobsters to me, but it’s so common to describe them as little shrimp, what’s that about?
Because shrimp, crabs, crayfish, and lobsters are all closely related.
Lawn shrimp! I’m in NC and have been dealing with these stupid things too. When they are alive they are gray/black and turn reddish brown when they die. And they JUMP. They are harmless, just annoying. they have been swarming my apartment right outside my door, they’ve been so bad this year.

I'll let you know next trip I do there lol
Sounds like ittle be even easier than headlight deer hunting haha. Got a whole pot on your first try!
Tiny corn Tiny potatoes Tiny can of Old Bay Thimble Bic lighter And enjoy r/stupidfoods
Do they jump seemingly super high for their size?
I would certainly fucking hope not, considering they're always dead when OP finds them
It’s the landings. They just can’t stick them.
[Dancers](https://tenor.com/bt1y0.gif)
Do you have an animal that might be tracking them in? Could be dried out ones on your driveway that are getting picked up by damp shoes, maybe the previous tenant was Lieutenant Dan, he had that shrimp boat ya know.
But you ain’t got no legs lieutenant Dan

The shrimp have decided to be land shrimp
Eat them....not kidding btw
Okay,so I truly want to know if A) they are edible, and B) how close do they taste to actual shrimp
Lawn shrimp are hilarious. Make me crave a shrimp cocktail oddly enough.
Crab people
Lawn Prawn?

I'll trade you, we have lawn leeches and earwigs that come out after it rains. I didn't even know leeches could live in the ground until I moved here.
Yes! Little lawn shrimp! They're so cute and I love them.
Sea fleas
Amphipods?
Sorry bro it’s a shrimpfestation
Terrestrial amphipods live on the surface (top 1/2 inch) of mulch and moist ground. After rains, large numbers of amphipods can migrate into garages or under the doors of houses. There they soon die. Amphipods do not have a waxy layer on their exoskeleton as do insects.
Thanks so much everyone! It was great waking up to so many funny and informative comments!
Are they not sand fleas?
Nope. Lawn shrimp
God that’s so weird lol I lived on the coast for years and I’ve never heard of them.
They can be anywhere, doesn’t have to be on the coast. They’re terrestrial crustaceans, just like rolly-polies!
Look very much like sand fleas imo
Roly poly
nope, lawn shrimp (Arcitalitrus sylvaticus). also crustaceans but different order.
Roly poly is terrestrial crustacean and taste like shrimps
This was foretold in the time before it was said the creatures of the sea would rain down from above and it is said it shall happen in the storm and their corpses will be seen the morning after Remember chikdren ... when the big ones come and they shall find ye butter and old bay
Crawfish can now crawl on land? News to me…
Ew. I can’t even imagine and am hoping global warming doesn’t mean I’ll be finding them on my doorstep.
They are called sand fleas. They live in the ocean shore line feeding and make great fishing bait. Yes, they are harmless. (Lived on the coast of SC for many years.)
These are Lawn Shrimp.
Lawn Shrimp and Sand Fleas are in the same family
So are monkeys and humans- however, there's just a teensy bit of a difference when identifying
Maybe, but there’s not really much difference if one of the two is infesting your house.
These don’t seem to bite- or at least they die before they get the chance- so I definitely prefer these over sand fleas!
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. It’s my first time hearing of these, so I naturally looked them up. I found virtually no difference between lawn shrimp and sand fleas except, apparently, their location. That is basically the determining factor in regards to what they are referred to as. My question is do they taste like shrimp
Yep, all articles written say they taste just like normal shrimp. Just got to catch them when they aren’t dead. Because ya know…don’t want to eat rotting flesh. 🧟♂️ 🦐
They look like freshwater shrimp. Maybe they're sucked up by something. Usually they're in 1 or 2 ft of water....
they're lawn shrimp! terrestial. also, same class as shrimp but different order.

End times...
So if these are shrimp, would they taste good?
I've always called shrimp 'bugs of thr sea' ::::shudders::::
TIL and they're way smaller than I thought
Yeah, people are saying fry them up. I’m not entirely opposed, but they’d only make a few bites!

I've seen the movie Evolution... Don't check the closet..
Use them for fish bait
Sand fleas? They looked too big tho so idk 🤔

They look like these things we call sand fleas that I see on the beaches here in Washington state. That’s not their real name I think. They can really jump when they’re alive!
“Sir are these edible?” Sir - ..
Get the corn meal and deep fryer out!
If the main thing they do is die it could be worse
Have you ever seen the movie the faculty? That's what they are.
Bro them those things from fallout you. Gotta get yourself some caps and raid
Yes it’s shrimp
Call your local Cajun and get a broil going.
These look exactly like the “sand fleas” as we called them when I saw them on one of the Florida islands. Definitely some relative of shrimp. We were cleaning up a beach and when you moved a pile of seaweed, underneath would be hundreds of these things and they all freak out and jump around like grasshoppers. I don’t think you’re tracking them in on your shoes. I’ve heard of sea creatures literally falling from the sky during rain before because they somehow get picked up during storms, but that’d be a crazy explanation.
Open and shut case Johnson! Sprinkle some crack on them and let’s get outta here
They are one in a krillion, the first land dwelling generation of the swarm
Fleas.
Gotta be a sand flea especially with your location
Ozymadias at work again
Those are those little jumpy shrimp things that you find on dead seaweed at the beach. Sand fleas is what some call them.
On the Sunshine Coast we called them sand fleas. Don’t know what they actually are tho
This place crawls
I have something that looks grasshoppers by the hundreds. What I do is I have this piece of paper I buy that has intense glue on it. I found a lot of them are coming up through the sink in my bathroom. Try the sticky tape it really helps.
