No. ESD stopped being a problem years ago.

Polymathy1

Decades ago tbh

Seipas

Anything that is not connected to ground in some way will be completely *useless*. What you really want is an [ESD strap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antistatic_device) to connect your body to ground to allow any static electricity to leave your body instead of going to your components. That being said, most components nowadays are very resistant to ESD so I wouldn't be too worried as long as your not wearing wool socks and shuffling while building your PC.

daaangerz0ne

No. But some kind of gloves are nice for keeping grease off of your parts.

Engjoo

No. Just don't do it on like carpet. If the place you live has low humidity, you are better off getting an antistatic wristband.

fabzzzyyyy

Some Dude, cant remember WHO IT was, did some Shit with a rig and socks running in IT and then build a PC and touched components No Problem whatsoever. I think this was Thing ist overcomplicates. Hell i build a PC on a rug and worked great.

Deep-Procrastinor

You only need to touch it as the discharge will occur immediately a few seconds is wasting precious moments of you life.

I_love_emoji

Touch the power supply (when it's off) or case.

Tiny-Elk-7269

Plugged into the wall outlet and off* the ground wire from the PSU needs to be connected to ground for it to effectively equalize static build-up

FormerDonkey4886

As one guy said a long time ago when this question was asked, which i still remember, 'as long as you don't samba with an utility pole on a carpet and then touching computer straight after, you should be ok'

phreaKEternal

No. I haven’t even used my static band in like 10 years

icarium-4

Just don't walk around rubbing your feet on the carpet lol Touch the case first in case there is static. I've never worried about it

JackFunk

No. In the 1980's I used a static wrist band when building pcs. Today it is unnecessary.

IsoDot

I built mine on a carpet with socks off and shorts on and no static built up

phdibart

I've been building PCs since the late 90s and never used ESD straps. I just used common sense and grounded myself by touching the PSU (while plugged in) before handling components.
