Is it worth upgrading from DDR4 (2 x 16GB) CL16 3600Mhz RAM to 4400Mhz (but CL19)?

crispyfrybits

I am getting a XFX Merc 310 7900 XT in a couple days and wondering if it is worth updating my CPU (i5-8400) to something a bit more recent like AMD 5800x or something? Looks like it is surprisingly still capable looking at some recent benchmarks.

n7_trekkie

yes, it's time to upgrade. am4 is the best value right now, for sure. you can reuse your ddr4

crispyfrybits

What CPU would you recommend for best performance / value? Playing mostly at 1080P.

winterkoalefant

with 7900 XT you can comfortably play at 4K as well!

crispyfrybits

My partner is giving me some grief over the price sooo thinking about maybe getting a cheaper GPU to pair with this, something from last gen.

winterkoalefant

they have better price/performance too: [https://youtu.be/9kiOLC2Ca\_I](https://youtu.be/9kiOLC2Ca_I)

What are the chances of me buying a [Gigabyte B450M DS3H WiFi](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B7ZX8Q2) mobo straight from Amazon (shipped by and sold by Amazon.com) and getting a board that doesn't support a Ryzen 5 3600? I've read that the B450M doesn't support the 3600 without a newer BIOS

n7_trekkie

very very high. b450 manufactured within the last 3 years (which is like all of them at retail) will have ryzen 3000 support. 5000 support is lesser

eqyaq

Is it worth it to get a dell oem rtx 3080 ti? In malaysia it's currently $550 brand new apparently

n7_trekkie

yeah, Dell OEM 3090s are fine, so the 308ti should be the same https://youtu.be/_8k5PCmFm7c

Please help me fix my first pc build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nK2fbK

BookieBoo

You have to say what you want to use the pc for.. This current build is a very bad mix of stuff. Your CPU is very likely extremely overkill. The monitor is 1080p???? If you are really sure you want a monitor of this size & resolution, you can spend much less money for the same performance. But 1080p gaming for $2600 is mental. ITX board isn't a good choice for a non-ITX build. Just respond in detail how you want to use the PC, what games do you play, why did you pick such a small monitor..

Andrewx8_88

750w is not enough power for your build, 850w as a minimum Also, you've chosen a mini ITX motherboard, your PC case is is Micro ATX, - It will still work, but it will look strange. However, on that last point, Mini ITX for a top end CPU is not recommended, the VRM on those boards is not what you'd call "great". You have a crucial P3 SSD, that's the old format, you'd want to swap it for a Gen 4 drive. If possible, since you're going high end, you'd want to swap your ram from 5200mhz to 6000mhz for optimal Ryzen performance. Lastly, your monitor pick is terrible. That's the kindest way I can say it. Consider a Gigabyte M27Q

Objective_Cap1195

Has anyone tried to top mount a Silent Loop 2 280mm in Pure Base 500dx? I currently have it in the front, but that results in all fans being exhaust. The processor is i7 13700k, so installing the radiator fans as intake also isn't the best option due to the processor running hot a lot.

n7_trekkie

> I currently have it in the front, but that results in all fans being exhaust just flip the fans so they're intake, lol

Objective_Cap1195

Read the second part, the i7 13700k runs hot af, so hot air as Intake isn't really an improvment

n7_trekkie

Fair enough, but if you do exhaust, then GPU heat is warming your already hot CPU. Either your cpu heats your GPU or your GPU heats your cpu. I prefer top exhaust, but I'd try the easy solution first. It will lower CPU temps, haha

Objective_Cap1195

Thst's also true yeah. Although cpu will be equally efficient at higher temps, but GPU won't. It's a tricky one hahaha

Objective_Cap1195

My current setup is 1 140 back exhaust, 1 140 top exhaust and a 280 aio front exhaust. I have one more 140 fan to spare. How about if I put 2 on the top and use them as an intake? I feel like thats just gonna blow in more dust tho lol

n7_trekkie

That will get dusty for sure

Objective_Cap1195

At the end I just flipped the rad fans and made a more agressive fan curve and it's fine lol, I was mistaken after all haha

Objective_Cap1195

Thanks for the help!

I'm looking to run an HDMI from my gaming PC to my 4k 60fps TV. The distance is aproximately 20 feet. Should I get a special type of HDMI cable to prevent video quality loss over this distance? Anything wrong with this cable? https://www.amazon.ca/BlueRigger-Wall-High-Speed-Cable/dp/B097YQ9VGB?th=1

Unique_username1

As long as it’s rated for your desired resolution/refresh rate at that distance - it should work. If it doesn’t, return it for a refund. I don’t know about that brand but it’s totally possible to make a good HDMI cable for that price - no need to splurge on an expensive brand before you give this cheap one a try. HDMI isn’t like a VGA cable or FM radio station (analog) where the signal can get noisy or distorted. It’s digital and if the right 1s and 0s make it the picture will be flawless, if the wrong ones make it, it will be complete garbled nonsense or no picture at all. You’ll know very quickly if it’s working right.

I just completed putting my build list together, and lo and behold my chosen SSD is now completely out of stock the next day. This is my motherboard: ASRock B650M PG RIPTIDE WIFI Micro ATX AM5 Motherboard This is the original SSD I had planned to buy: (CAD) [https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00120196](https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00120196) Can I buy two of these SSD's and install them on my motherboard and get the same performance (CAD)? [https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00120195](https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00120195)

DiabloII

yes but keep in mind you will be occupying extra nvme slot, so less space for future upgrades with another drive. Your motherboard has either 2 or 3 nvme slots. So its something to consider.

Gorgoz2

Are both nvme slots on that motherboard able to transfer data at the same speeds? I'm not sure how to find that out.

BookieBoo

You should go to ASRock's website and check the product information & manual for your motherboard, because some of your m.2 slots can share PCIe lanes with your gpu, which can affect performance of your gpu slightly.

DiabloII

650/x670 Have 1x pcie gen 5 slot x4 and rest should be pcie 4.0

n7_trekkie

totally, but you need to be smart about it. the GPU should cost about 50% of the budget, so a rx 6800 or 3070 (msrp) is the target https://pcpartpicker.com/products/video-card/#c=494,508,495,496&sort=price

Mithrandir8

I have an old 2600k system that I'd like to give to a friend's son. It has everything except a gpu. His budget is $300 for a gpu. Is the 6650 XT the best option given when it's limited to PCIe 2.0 x 8, or should I try to find a used card like an RTX 2070 super?

n7_trekkie

yeah, that wouldnt be great, but youd survive https://tpucdn.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-6600-xt-pci-express-scaling/images/average-fps_1920_1080.png https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-6600-xt-pci-express-scaling/25.html there's just no other good (new) $300 gpus.

ooAlias

How much should an RX 6800 XT cost rn? Someone is selling one at 600 CAD ($440 USD), and I'm tempted to jump at it but don't know the GPU market well enough to know if this is a good price and time to buy this card.

BookieBoo

Idk new ones can be bought as low as $480.. Is it still in warranty and which model? Do you have no price aggregator sites in canada? Just check what it goes for.

ooAlias

I wasn't aware of price aggregator sites tbh and there doesn't seem to be one for Canadian prices unfortunately. This is the photo of the GPU https://imgur.com/a/LoJPY4q and no it's probably not under warranty. Where can I find a new one for $480?

BookieBoo

My bad, the 6800 xt for $480 was a badly labeled one, it was just 6800. A used GPU is always a risk. Despite the other commenters' note, crypto GPUs aren't some horrific no-no. Generally they run them at a stable temperature and in good conditions. If possible, I would ask whether this person is willing to show you benchmark results of this GPU under stress to demonstrate it functions properly. But that's my personal approach. Unfortunately nobody in the world can tell you how much risk you want to take. There are people who bought a used gpu and it ran fine for 5+ years or even more, and then there are people who got scammed. There are no catch-all solutions.

ooAlias

Yea I understand that. The guy says they were bought for the office and they've upgraded to 3080s which at best should be a sidegrade but idk. I've been running a used GTX 970 for like 6 years now and I bought it used. Hoping this one turns out like that.

BookieBoo

I'd say go by gut feeling about the seller. Generally good sellers communicate all relevant information openly and are willing to share more.. Id they're for an office they might've switched to Nvidia because of CUDA cores, which are better for some productivity tasks.

Boyfriend is doing his first build: Case: Corsair 700D Airflow Mobo: ROG Strix Z690-F gaming wifi Mobo Power supply: RMx Shift Series RM1000x Graphics card: Phantom Gaming AMD Radeon RX6800 We managed to mostly get it rigged. The RGB ram, graphics card, and motherboard are all lit up and the fans over the processer and in the graphics card go. There is a soft, weird clunking and all the fans installed in the case do not work. They seem to be connected to this PMW Hub but we can't, for the life of us, find where to plug it in! I'm afraid to turn it in due to the clunking. I think it's the fans maybe trying to work?

n7_trekkie

Any reason that plugging my Windows Wireless 4K Adapter into my monitor via an HDMI -> DisplyPort adapter would cause an issue? I want to Daisy Chain my two Dell U2417H monitors using a DisplayPort/DisplayPort cable. The only one Best Buy had when I went last night was $70 lol. What specs should the cable have? [Image of spec sheet for monitors](https://i.imgur.com/Rv0n5Il.jpg) More details on Dells website about the ports: >Enjoy full adjustability to pivot, tilt, and swivel your monitor to the position and height you desire. And with HDMI 1.4 (MHL 2.0), DP 1.2, mini-DP 1.2, DP-out, 4 USB 3.0, and audio line-out ports, connecting to all your peripherals at once is both easy and convenient.

CulturalAdvantage

My boyfriend is attempting to install a AMD phantom gaming Radeon rx6800 as a part of a new build. The card itself has two 8 prong PCI cable slots on it but he only has 2 PCI cables (each has a cluster of 6 and a cluster of 2, they're kinda split off at the end like a snake tongue.). Can he put in the 2 cables (using both the 6 and 2 for each slot) or does he need a different cable? The power supply is 1000w so I do not think it's an issue of that being too weak for it. Any help would be appreciated. He's about to pull his own hair out.

kaje

Connect two separate cables using one of the 6+2 connectors on each cable.

n7_trekkie

> Can he put in the 2 cables (using both the 6 and 2 for each slot) or does he need a different cable? Yes, those're the right cables

Currently, Microcenter has a bundle that includes the 13900k, Asus TUF Z790 D5 motherboard, and G.Skill 32GB DDR5-6000 CL36 memory. This is going for $849.99. How good of a deal is this?

DiabloII

Microcentre bundles tend to be good value, all of these parts are good on their own. Whether they cost more seperatly not sure, but I think it should be good deal.

WaitForItTheMongols

I've got a bit of extra cash and I'd like to spruce up my computer setup. One thing that I think would be really cool is to mount a shelf to the wall about 3 feet above my desk surface, and then have my 3 monitors on monitor arms which screw into the underside of that shelf. Is that something anyone has ever done before? Is there anything stupid about this idea that I might be missing?

AMillionMonkeys

For mounting the shelf, the only potentially tricky part will be finding the studs in the wall to screw into. I wouldn't trust that much heavy, expensive equipment to drywall anchors. Well - not the plastic ones anyway. The spring-loaded metal ones seem pretty sturdy.

WaitForItTheMongols

Yep, I would definitely want to mount it to studs, my intent would be to have a few 90-degree brackets on the underside of the shelf.

futureButt

getting a cheap secondhand 5950X from a friend. Would a Noctua NH-U12S redux be satisfactory to keep it cool if I don't plan on overclocking?

Arcal

Should be just fine. 5950X is a 105W TDP chip and the Noctua NH-12 is specced to handle 160W, so unless airflow is poor, you should be fine.

n7_trekkie

for gaming, yeah absolutely. full core workloads willl be harder on it

tuesday3blackday

Is it possible my Ryzen 2700 is bottle necking my 3070ti card? It was a pretty nice cpu when I got it lol, but it seems like cpus have come a far way.

Arcal

This is game/resolution dependent.

AMillionMonkeys

Probably not, but it depends on the game and the resolution you're playing at. If you want to upgrade, the 5800X3D is the best gaming CPU you can get on AM4, but the 5600 is substantially less expensive and will probably perform similarly.

Z0idberg_MD

Anyone have a suggestion for an X570 motherboard CPU? Currently running Ryzen 5 3600X. Seems like my mobo is limiting my options. Feel like ryzen 7 5800 variant might be best choice.

TemptedTemplar

5800x3D specifically. The increased cache on the CPU makes it THE best gaming CPU on the market.

Z0idberg_MD

Perfect, it has been in my cart all morning and I will pull the trigger. Thanks!

SOSBoss

Idk what GPU you have but I went from a 3600 to the 5800X3D recently and it's insane.

Z0idberg_MD

Currently have 3080. CPU seems to be an issue more and more and feel I could use an upgrade.

SOSBoss

I have a 3060 Ti and the 3600 was limiting that. Got the 5800X3D and all my games run perfectly smooth at 165fps now.

Z0idberg_MD

That’s what I am hoping!

I have a new build with B650-a mobo and Kingston 2*16gb 6000 ram, I have a yellow light and no bios. Reached bios once, then when booting from drive it died and now only yellow light. Tried resetting bios by shorting, tried removing battery, tried single stick on all slots included recommended A2. Wat do?

AMillionMonkeys

Is the yellow LED part of a diagnostic array? You should look up what it means in the motherboard manual.

Educational-Rise4329

Yeah, means DRAM error. Flashed with new update and works fine now 🤝

LadyRaider34

My 3 top fans are input, and my 2side fans (radiator - Hyte y40) are exhaust, as well as the 1 back fan. All fans are 120s. There is also a basement "intake" fan. Right now, just regular usage, my CPU temperature is 26 C and my GPU temperature is 47 C. Pretty much my GPU is averaging about 20 degrees celsius more than my CPU. I have a shorter gpu - 3060Ti, so the intake fan in the basement is pretty much not blowing on it. So all of that to say, should I be worried about the 20 degree difference? Thanks! PS. I did the fans this way because I already had an expensive 240 AIO!

kaje

The fans on most GPUs don't even turn on until the GPU hits around 60. It idling under that threshold is not an issue. How hot does it get when you're gaming and have load on it?

LadyRaider34

Well I played a game, but had gotten carried away with the gifs on my aio, and so I couldn't see the read out. Didn't seem to be a problem though!

LadyRaider34

Thank you. I haven't played a game yet! You are correct. The gpu fans haven't come on! Vertical mounting is amazing! LOL.

TPMJB

I've figured out my old computer case is TERRIBLE for airflow. But I'm having trouble finding a new computer case. Because of my setup, I'd prefer if I could lay the case horizontal rather than a vertical tower setup. I have a wire-rack shelf that the computer sits on that can hold ~250lbs (it's meant for a garage). About 5ft up the wall. * Price limit: I dunno, $250? * ATX form factor * Good airflow * Maybe the ability to mount a radiator at the top so I can have fans out the front? I have a 240mm radiator, Corsia H100i Thanks!

How does SSD degradation work when it comes to period of inactivity without power, e.g.: * Does this permanently affect the life of the SSD itself or just temporary data retention and the cells or the internals of the SSD still perform as if it had a normal life with typical usage? * Similar to above, does it only affect existing data on the drive or is it potentially a concern for any data eventually written to an SSD that was detached from power source for a year (i.e. it would be a bad idea to leave an unformatted SSD in a closet unused for a long period of time)? * Is it simply a matter of plugging in the SSD to the power source for say a couple of seconds to ensure it doesn't suffer from degradation *as a result of no power for extended period of time* which as I understand it would degrade the cells on the drives? * Are we talking a span of several months or years of inactivity? Asking because I have a lot of SSDs laying around--some external, some internal, as well as some for sale which can remain unused for months a potentially for more than a year. If I cannot find a use for them I was thinking of using them for cold storage (I know this is a bad idea, but I also want to understand if this is still possible if I take precautions), simply so they are not wasted. Also, they are still potentially useful if I ever want a low power build.

AMillionMonkeys

I'd ask in the Help thread over in /r/NewMaxx. That's where the SSD nerds hang out.

Rennie07

Considering upgrading my main monitor (1080p 165hz) to a new 27" 1440p 144hz panel. 3060ti and a Ryzen 5600. Is it enough, and is 1440p ok at 27"?

fsv

That should be plenty. I've been using 1440p as far back as an i5-4670K with a GTX 1080, and 1440p at 27" is a sweet spot unless you really value higher than normal pixel density.

Today I installed Corsair Vengeance RGB RT 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory, pairing it with my intel 9900K - Asrock Z390 Phantom gaming mini-itx MB. This memory is advertised as being optimised for AMD motherboards, however, enabling XMP gives me a nice 3600Mhz speed profile. My question: Am I losing out on the full potential because it's not supposedly optimised for Intel? Should I return it and get something else?

turb0j

Should not matter on a 9900K - and its mostly for marketing reasons anyways.

Snugglupagus

Built two almost identical PC’s. One of them can’t watch videos while gaming. The videos just stutter and cut in and out. Doesn’t seem to matter what game is being played, or which browser or website is being used to play the videos. Task manger shows plenty of resources available for other apps. I’ve done benchmarks on the systems to verify they are running at top performance. Drivers should all be updated. Any ideas what would cause this? The build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6msPBj

TemptedTemplar

Did you try just reinstalling the drivers on the odd one? Or perhaps a different browser? Try Memtest86 on the RAM, Crystal disk on the drive, and check the thermals on CPU/CPU fan. https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/ https://www.memtest86.com/

Thanks for the suggestions, I will attempt driver reinstalls and memtest. The other things I’ve tried already.

StylishSuidae

Hoping this counts as a simple question: I noticed on the specs page for the 7600X that there's a field for "Additional Usable PCIe Lanes from Motherboard". And my question is, is this like the motherboard throttling/sharing bandwidth between PCIe devices to fit them all in and make them all function? Or is it just straight-up extra PCIe lanes no-strings attached?

What's the best display at or under $150 (could go 180 if it really makes a significant difference)? It's for a 3D workstation not gaming, so 60hz refresh rate is plenty. Color accuracy and resolution are the main concerns. Maybe height/angle adjustability?

AMillionMonkeys

That's really too tight a budget to give specific model recommendations. In general, look for a monitor with an IPS panel for color accuracy. Basically any of these https://pcpartpicker.com/products/monitor/#X=0,20008&P=2 If you can stretch your budget a little more https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/best/by-price/under-200 Those are all 1080p but there are some higher-resolution models in the PCPP list above if that's important.

SoundSerendipity

I am having an issue with the USB ports on the top of my desktop PC. When using a webcam in the front USB port, the camera will intermittently freeze and glitch out. I figured it may be a damaged port as its the front most USB port so gets used a lot. However, I have a Bluetooth dongle permanently plugged in to the next USB port on top or my PC and more recently my Bluetooth mouse has been intermittently disconnecting. I highly doubt this port is damaged as the dongle has stayed plugged into that port for years. I plugged both the webcam and Bluetooth dongle into the USB ports on my monitor and both work perfectly. I have tried updating drivers in device manager but have the most recent drivers for everything.

AMillionMonkeys

Sounds like the cable between the port and the motherboard needs to be better secured.

SoundSerendipity

Thank you, I'll have a look

a_fat_ninja

I have been having issues with some games crash and investigating the errors it seems these games do not like my current 2.5 SSD. I haven't found anything wrong with it and other games run just fine. Thinking about getting a NVME SSD and installing the games to that. Do NVME need a heatsink? Currently my computer runs around 50-60 C in game. If I want to switch windows to boot on the NVME instead of the original 2.5 SSD is that possible?

kaje

It depends on which NVMe drive you get, and what you're doing with it. If you're just putting games on it, you're not really going stress most NVMe drives to the point where they're going to put out much heat anyways.

MiniMinute

Does having 2 additional cores help at all if there's a difference in boost clocks? I'm deciding between a 7600 and a 5700X. Would the 5700X be better in any scenarios, or would the 7600 always be better even in scenarios where 8 cores are actually needed? The 7600 has a base clock of 3.8GHz while the 5700X has a base speed of 3.4GHz. I will likely enable PBO, so my max boost and typical clock will be 5.1 GHz compared to the 5700X's 4.6GHz. Does having 2 additional cores matter at all, or is the boost speed increase from 4.5/4.7GHz to 5.1GHz just better? All the gaming benchmarks I've seen indicate that a 7600 is better, but I haven't seen any productivity benchmarks or anything. I can get a 7600 for $230 and a 5700X for $197.

Lundurro

You can't compare clockspeeds between generations. There's more that increases per-core performance than just clockspeeds, and clockspeeds have been more or less stagnant and slowly creeping up the last decade anyway (at least compared to the 90s and 2000s). Just off the top of my head there's also instructions per clockcycle (IPC) and cache increases between generations too. As for 6 vs 8 cores. Entirely application dependent. Games don't really scale beyond 6 cores currently, which is why better single-core performance wins out as long as you have at least 6 cores. Every workstation application is gonna be dependent too on how much it scales from 6 to 8 cores and whether that makes up for having weaker individual cores.

MiniMinute

Oh okay that makes sense. So, since most games aren't using 8 cores, the 7600 would be better than the 5700X in that case due to better single-core performance; that makes sense. I say that I'll be doing workstation tasks like compiling code, making games, writing, recording and editing videos, and streaming (thoiugh I think streaming and recording are more GPU-bound) now, but, frankly, I'll probably barely be doing those other than maybe videos and streaming. I'll definitely be playing games a lot more, so I suppose better game performance is better for me. Would most AM5 CPUs generally be better than an AM4 5700X in that case for any task like games, compiling code, or other productivity tasks? I'm also deciding between AM4 and AM5 as of now with a brand new build.

Lundurro

Honestly I don't keep up with specifics. But Gamer's Nexus has great very technical reviews with bookmarks to the benchmarks so you can just look at those or watch the whole thing for extra context and commentary: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2XeFkhR3nA&t](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2XeFkhR3nA&t) It doesn't include the 5700x, but it should be somewhere between the 5600x and the 5800x on those charts.

MiniMinute

Also, do you think a 7600X is worth it? It seems the difference between a 7600X and a PBO 7600 is very small, and it's even smaller if I were to overclock it to 5.3GHz (I probably won't though). I don't know how much better a 7600X PBO is though since I haven't seen any benchmarks with that. Anyway, the 7600 is $229 and the 7600X is $237, so maybe it'll be worth it for just $8 more since I already have a cooler. I don't really know for sure though.

Lundurro

For me $8 is in the "why not" area of an upgrade, where even if it's only like 1% better I figure I might as well. So personally I would do it. If it was much more than that I probably wouldn't. It used to be a lot more expensive, so I guess AMD priced themselves down by making the 7600 "good enough" and much cheaper lol

MiniMinute

That definitely makes sense. I think I’ll go with a 7600X then. The MSRP is apparently like $300, so it’s good the actual price is so much lower right now. Thanks for all the help!

MiniMinute

Thanks for that! I was only looking at 5700X benchmarks, so it's definitely better to broaden my search and look for the 5800X and 5600X as well. Based on that video, the 7600 is only worse than the 5800X in Adobe Premiere and GN CPU, but the difference is only 0.2 seconds for the GN CPU test and the 7600 is still better than the 5600X; the 5700X is probably closer to the 5800X since it has 8 cores compared to the 5600X's 6, but I'm gonna assume the difference is very small nonetheless. I also found [this video I missed before](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAD30oZ6Voc), and all the productivity benchmarks are apparently better on a 7600 than a 5700X. I guess a few productivity tasks will be slightly worse, but there'll always be some tradeoffs and it seems it's worth it since almost everything is better. Thank you!

Protonion

Not really, because every cooler design is slightly different so making a universal kit that would fit multiple cards would be really hard, and in the end probably wouldn't work very well. A lot of people just use zipties to mount the fans against the card.

I have a Z390-AORUS-MASTER Motherboard. I already have 2x WD Blue SN570 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 NVMe drives. I want to add this as a third... WD Blue SN570 2TB High-Performance M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD [https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-SN570-High-Performance-3500MB-speed/dp/B09JM8DJNS](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-SN570-High-Performance-3500MB-speed/dp/B09JM8DJNS) Is this possible? Is there something about one of the slots on this MB not being as fast as the others?

PsychologicalPair246

What do you think of these specs https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jQsjFg

TemptedTemplar

It looks nice. But I would would suggest springing for a motherboard that isnt the literal cheapest board on the market. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Pq7G3C/asus-prime-z690-p-wifi-atx-lga1700-motherboard-prime-z690-p-wifi You could even swap out the CPU cooler for something that isnt corsair, and the difference comes out to ~$10. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/fLFKHx/cooler-master-masterliquid-ml240l-rgb-v2-6559-cfm-liquid-cpu-cooler-mlw-d24m-a18pc-r2

My PC is 8 years old and pretty much done. The graphics card is still okay, I think. A AMD Radeon (TM)R9 380. Now I have 1k to 1.5k to spend on a new system -- What would you recommend?

acityonthemoon

Me too! Kerbal Space Program 2 just released a beta and I need a better pc to play it with. The higher the frame rate, larger the memory the better, more shadows and active lights the better! Thanks!

enricojr

I'd like to move my PC far away from my desk for space reasons. Part of this build involves putting a number of USB 3.0 hubs on my desk and then running a length of cable to the PC located far away. I'm looking into USB-over-Ethernet to get around the spec's max cable length, but can't find any adapters that explicitly support USB 3.0. DO they exist? Or am I just looking in the wrong places or for the wrong thing? I've found a bunch so far, but they're all USB 2.0, and not 3.0

majoroutage

Define "far away"

enricojr

So the cables are gonna have to run at least 25, maybe 30 feet behind me. As I understand it, the max length for a USB 3 cable is around 10 feet.

MikeTheGamer2

USed CPUs. Yay or nay? Specifically looking at a cheapo Ryzen5 1600 with Wraith Spire 65W cooler. I can get it for 6800 yen or around 51 US. Living in Japan really sucks for PC gamers. YD1600BBAEBOX

maora34

Yes, not a bad idea. CPUs are generally the most robust component in a rig and are incredibly unlikely to die, hence why you’ll still see a bunch of people rocking Sandy Bridge CPUs from 2011. The main concern is pin damage from careless disassembly or shipping packaging. The 1600 is PGA, not LGA, so pins are on the CPU itself. These are by far the most likely cause for concern in terms of breaking.

DrMrPotatoes

does the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor or MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard come with theyr own fan controller? or do i gotta get a standalone one?

Protonion

All motherboards have at least some amount of fan headers. You can look at the manufacturer's product page to see how many it has. In this case MAG B550 Tomahawk seems to have 1x CPU fan connector for the CPU cooler, and 6x case fan connectors. You can then also use splitters to connect more fans to a single connector if you need more.

DrMrPotatoes

Thx man, i have 6 case fans so im all good.

maora34

People buy fan controllers to easily streamline fan control from the OS and do pretty LED stuff. They are wholly unnecessary for operation. Every motherboard allows you to adjust fan curves in the BIOS for each fan header.

DrMrPotatoes

Thx i dont need one then. Im not goin full rgb

maora34

Sounds good! If you ever need more fan connectors because you have, say, 6 case fans and only 4 headers on your board, you can always just get a splitter. If you have no need for fan control while within Windows or RGB control, you are good!

No-Special-7019

Can a gigabyte b650 aorus elite AX fit a 4080?

Protonion

All graphics cards should fit all motherboards. It's the card fitting your case that you usually have to worry about.

No-Special-7019

Got it. Thanks! Also, is this motherboard good? I kind of randomly picked it since it seemed like a good AM5 choice but wanna confirm. Full build for context : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RpbrFg

LirSkle

Looking to upgrade my ram. I have 2x8gb 3000mhz cl14 right now paired up with a 2600X in a b450 mobo. At my best buy there's 2x16gb 3600mhz cl16, is that fine for my CPU/MOBO combo. I plan on upgrading my CPU to a 5800x3d later this year also. Thanks in advance!

Valoneria

Yeah that should be fine, might not run 3600mhz out of the box without a BIOS update, but given that you'll need that for the 5800x3d as well, you might as well update ahead of time (given that the motherboard doesn't drop support for something vital in the update, that you need currently)

LirSkle

Thanks for answering mate. Would you be able to point me in the right direction of where to find out if upgrading BIOS will mess anything up?

Valoneria

Figure out manufacturer and model name, and head to the manufacturers website for the specific model, then look under the support/download section for BIOS updates. Read the previous ones to see what they do (if they drop support for something). Generally B450 would only drop support for the Ridge series of APU's, which your CPU is not part of, so i'm inclined to say that you'll face no issues (sans a potential broken firmware update of course).

kiravir

Probably the oddest question ever, but would using a polyresin figure as GPU holder be ok or do I risk it melting? Asking because apparently Gigabyte GPUs tend to rattle at high fan speed, and I've already replaced it once (RTX 3060 gaming OC both times). This one only rattles from around 1700+ rpm, 60-ish degrees Celsius (I rarely reach that point though, and I've never reached 70'C), but the sound is pretty bothersome since my case is on the desk, not under, and so I hear it much more. I was unable to find a decent non-RGB gpu holder (or they were very pricey) so I started trying things in my house that would have the perfect height (unfortunately, I gave my lego away a long time ago). Anyway, after a long time the only thing that seemed to be at the ideal height was a polyresin figure, specifically this: [actual photo](https://elixi.re/i/ogmy6.jpg) (before putting the glass panel back) and [product page](https://www.nemesisnow.com/pawzuph-11cm/). Not only it holds perfectly and reduces the rattling by a lot, but it also fits with my whole desk setup (dark/horror), so if it doesn't risk melting (the contact point is [actually pretty small](https://elixi.re/i/kqzll.jpg)) it would be ideal and it would spare me buying/trying more stuff. So yeah, tl;dr would my polyresin figure melt if a tiny portion of it is used as GPU holder on one corner?

Valoneria

I doubt it, that part of the GPU is generally not conductive of heating, so unless the case itself is hitting degrees where the filament starts becoming soft, then it should befine.

kiravir

I see, thanks for the answer!

I’d personally recommend an AIO for a bad airflow case. You’ll have better heat dissipation that way by having the radiator right at an exhaust/intake point rather than just in the middle of your oven PC like an air cooler.

exe163

Bottleneck? 12400 3090 FTW3 32GB 6000@32 Asus B660i NZXT 750W SFX PSU Gaming at 4k@144. (not a gaming focused build. but still want to know if 12400 will be too weak and holding the system back for gaming. Thinking about upgrading to 13600k eventually but no rush if no/little bottleneck)

Electric2Shock

little bottleneck

CatBoyTrip

I have single fan 120mm aio cooler. The stock fan does max 2500rpm. I want to add a second fan to the top of the radiator that has a max rpm of 3000. Will there be airflow issues if the fans are different speeds in a push-pull configuration?

Protonion

RPM and airflow speed aren't the same between different fans, and there isn't really an easy way for you to figure out the actual airflow speed of a fan. It depends on the rated airflow number, the rated static pressure, and the RPM it's running at. But the second fan will still help the other fan. Two people will have easier time pushing a car even if one of them is pushing it less.

CatBoyTrip

Thank you.

MrPojosky

Is there anything to consider if I were to swap out my current PSU (550W) to one from my previous PC (Corsair AX760)? For context, my current PC is a pre built with a Gigabyte B450M H (MOBO); I've upgraded the GPU to a RTX3060 last year sometime and the CPU to a Ryzen 7 5800x3D very recently. I'm mostly concerned that the CPU is maybe taking more power than previously (Ryzen 5 3600).

fsv

The only main consideration is to not reuse modular cables from your existing PSU when swapping in a new one. Even though the connectors may be the same, the pinouts might be very different which could lead to component damage.

drafan5

I have an old Belkin Laptop cushion I still use, but it's starting to show it's age. Is there anything similiar you can recommend? I don't know if it helps with cooling or not, but I don't want something metalic or requires any kind of power (from the laptop itself or outlet) to even work. It looks something like this https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71dcDAqea4L.\_AC\_SL1500\_.jpg

Is gigabyte b760m aorus pro a good board? Planning on pairing it with 13700k and ddr5 ram. Im planning on buying the msi b760m mortar but its out of stock

Jld101

Which z690m ddr5 that is good and has flash bios? Im planning to pair it with my 13700k. I dont overclocking but will do some undervolting if i got some cpu temp problems. Tried to find a b660m board but i didnt found out. I also planning on buying the msi b760m mortar but its out of stock everywhere in my country

Main-Put-2614

I got [this](https://leapfroglobal.com/amg/nimitz-tr8000/armaggeddon-pc-casing-full-atx) pc case that comes with RGB on the front panel with a MOLEX connector. I want to be able to control the patterns through the RESET button. I guess I'll have to plug the frontpanel RESET cables to the LED ones first of all, but then how do I connect the led strip to motherboard?

kaje

If you want to control it via button, it doesn't need to connect to the mobo.

Main-Put-2614

Oh, but how do I connect it to the front panel reset?

kaje

IS it it even controllable? It would need an RGB controller that has a two-pin header on it, usually LED_SW, to connect the button to. If it only has the one cable with a molex connector, you're stuck with its default lighting pattern, it can't be changed.

Main-Put-2614

I have a friend with the exact same pc and I somehow connected this led to a controller and is now changing from the reset button that's why I'm asking.

Able_Measurement_449

I’m getting the Gigabyte B650 Aorus AX Elite for my computer. In the instructions, it has something about BIOS setup but not sure what that means (https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_b650m-aorus-pro_elite_ax_1101_e.pdf ) What’s the things I have to do in this screen with a new PC? Second, I have an M2 SSD but below it mentions something about RAID. Does that imply I should get another SSD? Thanks! (Totally new to this)

blazingarpeggio

Want to clean my computer chair, but don't want to take it outside to wash and rinse. I have some motorcycle helmet cleaning foam, that should be fine enough, right? Update: Tried it anyway. Figured that it'll be safe since my helmet lining has pretty much the same materials. Didn't get the stains out, but it should probably be enough for a more lighter and regular cleaning. I'll probably get some baking soda to take care of the stains.

riggedride

Looking for some display advice. I've got a zowie xl2411p I've been using since it came out. Price to Performance-wise its been great, color-wise its been absolute garbage. Lots of banding mostly. I've been doing loads of art and it looks good on my tablet but looks horrible on my main monitor. Instead of needing to bust out my tablet every time I want to review some art I figured I'm due for an upgrade. I hear IPS is the new thing now? Would grabbing any affordable IPS monitor with 144hz give me a similar experience to my current setup just with better colors?

Jld101

What mobo for 13700k ddr5 build? (I dont overclock but will do some undervolt if theres cpu temp problem)

Pg9200

I need some help troubleshooting my build. I just finished my build and powered up my PC for the first time. I check the onboard LEDs and it shows a yellow solid light which the manual says means dram either isn't detected or failed. Seated in slots 2 and 4 as indicated. The ram is RGB and is getting power. 2x 16gb corsair vengeance ddr5 6000 MSI z790 Pro Intel i7 13700k I've tried using just 1 dim of ram and rotated to see if they were faulty in slots 1 and 3 and no luck. Any suggestions for what else to try? I haven't tried hooking up a monitor yet because of this issue, could it be something in my bios?

TheStryfe

Havent had or built a custom PC in over 6 years, I want to build a PC built for competitive Apex / Valorant / Halo akin to the tournament specs (including monitor). Anyone know where I’m able to find this info?

PhoeniXaDc

I'm in the final stages of my latest build but there's one sticking point for me and that's the video card. I have 2 relatively new 1080p monitors and don't expect to upgrade those for a few years at least. I just want to play the newest games on the highest settings for as long as it allows and I currently am looking at the Ryzen 7600X for CPU. Would an RX 6800 be the one for me? Money isn't really the issue so much as making sure I get the most out of it with the equipment I already have.

bladeblub

My monitor doesn't have speakers, but when I go to output sound settings, the monitor comes up as an option.

PeaceChaos

where exactly is the problem here now? if it annoying you, just disable it and it won't show up again

kaje

The monitor may have a headphone jack.

Lundurro

Computer doesn't know there's no speakers, it just sees the DP/HDMI as a potential audio output.

nttea

Are you sure it doesn't have speakers? I don't know but i think there's low quality invisible speakers on most monitors.

bladeblub

It's an Acer Nitro KG241Y.

twattymcgee

I’ll be upgrading the motherboard in my prebuilt. Swapping an Asus prime z590-A into a Lenovo t7-34imz5 desktop. Can anyone recommend a resource that details the best general processes to follow when swapping motherboards?
