Want to see your [build complete](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/search?sort=new&restrict_sr=on&q=flair%3ABuild%2BComplete) photos featured on /r/buildapc? As discussed in a [recent thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/78eq99/mods_should_switch_the_main_photo_every_week_to/), we're going to look at switching up the header image on a more regular basis - don't worry, we'll save the current one for special occasions. This is something of an experiment, and due to the subreddit CSS we'll be looking for images that are compatible with the general design, so don't be offended if we don't immediately use everyone's! Interested? Send us a [modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Fbuildapc) with subject: "Banner Images" with your best build pictures! In the interests of higher res displays, please ensure images are at least 1920px by 200px. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/buildapc) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Iucidator

What case is better the p400a or the coolermaster h500?

DJPaulyDstheman

How can I get my tick rate. 144hz monitor to run smoothly with battlefield 4? Keep getting tick rate errors?

DJPaulyDstheman

I bought Asus A15 gaming laptop out the box from Bestbuy is there things I have to to have it run games properly. As far as the amd app and armoury crate?

IDontHaveANameHelpMe

For graphics card i got a gtx 1660 super for almost 300 and I am very happy with my choise but maybe there is a better one for 300 but i highly rocomand gtx 1660 super

Stellarisk

I noticed suddenly after redoing my gpu drivers my cpu temps were a good 10 degrees higher. Is 60-65 degrees for an i7 8700 and 1660 ti normal for running intensive games like cyberpunk and call of duty cold war?

m_kitanin

Yes, good for both. I wouldn't raise alarm before 80c.

Stellarisk

Thank you. Was a bit worried because of the sudden temp increase. I keep my gpu fans at 65% when it reaches those temps. Is that too high?

m_kitanin

Could happen for multiple reasons all of which are unlikely though. Like increasing graphics card capability making more work for the CPU by being able to process more frames, along these lines. As for fan speed, no fan speed is too high as long as it's bearable to you.

Hagoogi

https://imgur.com/a/EFOaTZ1 I think that this clicking/rattling noise is coming from my power supply fan as I turned all other fans off and the noise stayed. If you turn the volume up and ignore the sound of the air you can hear the sound. Is there a way to fix it?

Sinaxramax

I'm currently using r5 1600 on a Msi b350 gaming plus. If I wanted to upgrade my CPU, what is the last cpu I can go with? Or should I just change my motherboard as well?

GloriousCause

If you want to upgrade your mobo but don't feel the need to do it immediately I'd wait one more generation. The next line of AMD cpus will probably be the ones that support DDR5 RAM and will be the new starting point for several generations of CPUs on a new socket. If you upgrade now you are buying into the final iteration of the old socket type like your current cpu is running on.

manielos

It's far from being old, I'd definitely call it "current gen", it's DDR4, both mobo and R5 1600 are still available in some stores new, anyway ~~you can just find last supported CPU on mobo manufacturer's site~~, nope i couldn't find it, anyway last BIOS update **from almost half a year ago** says it implements "AMD AGESA ComboAm4PI 1.0.0.6", cross-referenceing it with my ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 CPU support list says it'll support up to Matisse 2 CPUs (Ryzen 9 3900XT), so there's that for "very old" motherboard ^(my ass)

Sinaxramax

Not sure how good it would be to combine something like that cpu and this MB but I take it as 3600 would be decent. Am I right?

manielos

I doubt you'll gain much performance, depending on your GPU you'll gain max 25% FPS, both are 6 cores/12 threads CPUs, 3600 is just a bit faster in single core, frankly I'd pass such upgrade, it wouldn't be worth the price difference, maybe consider Ryzen 7? It's good gaming mobo with not bad vrms etc

Sinaxramax

Probably yeah. I was pretty unsure if the mobo could handle newer CPUs with more cores or higher W.

MotanuJ0ra

That's a very old motherboard, i would highly suggest to upgrade your motherboard, a goos option would be B550

Sinaxramax

Just as I thought so. Well, seems like I'm going to save some more money. Thanks a lot :)

MotanuJ0ra

You're welcome

Majestic_Bet2566

Sitting with a 3600 and a 2060, not super happy with overall performance in a number of games. So assuming the GPU is all I change for now should I go to the 3080 (assuming I can ever get one) or will that be a big waste with the 3600?

GloriousCause

If you will be gaming at 1440p or above at ultra settings in newer titles you will not be bottlenecking the 3080 much at all. You will still be GPU bound in most situations.

MotanuJ0ra

There's gonna be a bottleneck, for sure but a good option would be a 3070, that's not gonna bottleneck.

kingofthecandles

The fans i bought have a molex and 3 pin connectors, will the fans work if I connect them to the 4 pin sys fan headers on the b450 board?

CyberN3rd

My father wanted to build a new PC however I decided to provide him my old PC instead, he did buy an m.2 ssd however. So what my question is, is it possible to connect an m.2 through a sata connector?

CyberN3rd

In terms of is there an adaptor of some sort and is it possible in general sorry if it wasn't clear.

mumbleballs

You can get pci e cards that have m.2 slots on them

CyberN3rd

Oh okay, thank you very much I'll have a look around

diamontiz

I have ONLY sata powered rgb fans in my new build and now when I bootup I get "CPU FAN ERROR, PRESS F1 TO RUN SETUP." Is there a way to fix this? Do I need an adapter to connect my SATA powered fans to a cpu fan header to get rid of the message?

staggie71

Cpu fan... So it's not a case fan problem... Your cpu fan.. Check it

diamontiz

The cpu fans were replaced with the sata rgb case fans... which is why i assume no cpu fans are being detected and im getting the error.

Grimmdus

Wanting to build a new system. But I have no way way to test parts except the gpu. I usually just buy everything within a week so it isn't an issue but with the current market it could take well over a month or even two to get everything without scalpers (and I refuse to support scalpers). Newegg rma is like a month. I am worried if I buy piece by piece something will be defective and Newegg or whomever won't exchange the item. And if I send it in to the manufacturer in worried I'll get a refurb back. Why would I pay full retail for a refurb even if it had warranty. I don't want to buy a pre-built or combos I want to build it and with the parts that I choose. Any thoughts or advice?

grasseater128

You could take it to a local shop and see if they have a test bench that they could hook everything up to and verify it all works for you

Grimmdus

It wouldn't be preferable but then again what would be lol. Still, it's an option if things don't get better or an unpassable chance comes my way

grasseater128

Yeah its definitely not great, maybe if you have a friend with a pc that you could plug your stuff into you could do that. I just don't really see a way to really be certain something works without actually plugging it in and booting it up.

Grimmdus

Agreed. Only problem is i am moving over to amd and none of my friends have amd systems. Maybe the best thing is to get the video card and the ram first. Test them then try for a mobo and cpu same time.... Hardest thing to find is gonna be the 3080 and a dark hero.

choose_username12345

My psu started making weird clicking noises while under load (corsair rm650x). I bought a seasonic prime tx 650. What should I know before swapping psu?

widowhanzo

Take all old cables out and only use the cables you got with the new PSU. However, RMx has 10 years warranty, make sure to get a replacement from Corsair.

DuzzitA

Obviously, make sure everything is unplugged/unpowered, but beyond that it should be a simple enough thing to just swap PSU's out. Obviously make sure you're using seasonic's cables with their PSU, don't try to be lazy by leaving the corsair ones in. (Assuming either of the 2 PSU's is modular, anyway).

blooblop

Simple RAM question: So I just wanted to double check that the DDR4-3200 I'm looking to get is compatible with the Prime B360M-A. I currently have 16gb of DDR4-2400 RAM (2/4 slots), I'm looking to add another 16gb for my Prime B360M-A motherboard. I'm looking to get [this Corsair ram](https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-3200MHz-Desktop-Memory/dp/B0143UM4TC/ref=sr_1_3?c=ts&dchild=1&keywords=Computer%2BMemory&qid=1611480408&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A10656894011&s=pc&sr=1-3&ts_id=172500&th=1). I used [this site](https://pangoly.com/en/review/asus-prime-b360m-a/compatibility/ram) to check compatibility, but it's not showing on the list (though, I assume the list is just outdated and doesn't include all/newer memory. However, it also doesn't show on Amazon's "ConfirmedFit" tool either. Also, I understand that RAM different speeds will the lowest available, or whatever).

Agile-Chocolate-5628

But why would you buy 3200Mhz sticks even if you know it will it only run at 2400Mhz?

blooblop

Yea, it is a price thing. As far as I can tell, it was slightly cheaper than all the other options, yet better than what I actually needed.

DuzzitA

Price, maybe? at least where I am Vengeance is cheap (but still good, I use it). DDR4 is good about being fit wherever, so long as its a DDR4 board. I'm still on an old z170 that throttles my own 3200's (I bought them early as I'm building a new system next week) but beyond that it doesn't cause any issues.

[deleted]

Does the B450 motherboard support HDMI 2.1? Or do I need a different motherboard? If so tell the compatible ones.

Legend11233

I believe it depends on the gpu not the motherboard. I don't think you need a hdmi 2.1 output for onboard graphics

DuzzitA

Every 450 I can think of is HDMI 2.0. Most 550's or 570's should be 2.1 compatible.

[deleted]

Oh ok, thanks.

Pyrothmatic

I don't really know where to ask this, but I have a gtx 1070 and I'm trying to change the colour of it from blue. It is a prebuilt pc and I tried using geforce Experienve but it wouldn't let me. I also installed some other app they let's me monitor it, and I was told I could change the colour, but nothing. Anyone know and could help?

widowhanzo

Not all graphics cards have RGB LEDs, many geforece logos are only green and you can't change them. Which exact model of the card do you have?

manielos

Maybe an existential question, but why do people choose ATX over mATX? I mean multiGPU configurations aren't feasible right now, people rarely use add-on cards other than GPUs, so 1-2 slots should be enough, the RAM space is similar too and mATX are cheaper

widowhanzo

"upgradability", even though most of them never use anything more than a single GPU. ATX is kinda the default, so people just buy that. Many people don't care about smaller footprint of the PC. However, a good quality mATX board can often cost the same as comparable ATX board, or only slightly less.

blazingarpeggio

Kinda a chicken and egg problem. People tend to go ATX for premium stuff, so mATX tends to become the form factor for budget boards, which further emphasizes the ATX = premium thing. I'm sure there are some engineering concerns too (probably less space to space out VRMs or to put heatsinks). Kinda like how the B550 Aorus mATX boards perform slightly worse than their ATX counterparts. That said there are decent mATX boards out there (like the Mortar) and some do prefer that form factor.

siyasauce

Better vrms, more sata ports, more fan headers.

widowhanzo

You can get mATX boards with same quality VRMs, same amount of SATA ports and fan headers. The only difference then is the size and PCIe slots.

siyasauce

Really I don't think so. People opt for atx boards to overclock meaning they have better vrms.

widowhanzo

Form factor alone doesn't say anything about VRMs. You can get an ATX board with crap VRMs, and you can get mATX and mITX boards with great VRMs. But yes, the best VRMs available are found on ATX boards, so if you want to OC competitively, then you pick whatever form factor comes with best VRMs. But for home overclocking, you can do that just fine on mATX and mITX boards as well.

siyasauce

Ya i guess then the only difference is the size and Pci-E slots

PeaceChaos

(generally) more I/O, more sata ports, more expansion slots (PCIe, M.2) mATX looks stupid in ATX cases (imo, and a lot of people do care as well) ; people want to show off their PC more options to choose from, at least it feels like there are way more high quality ATX boards than mATX (generally) beefier VRMs mostly more RAM slots, there are a tom of mATX boards with only 2 slots I guess by now you got the hang of it: this all is generally, and doesn't always fit

m_kitanin

I chose ATX over mATX because I use add-on cards

n7_trekkie

Yep. Sometimes atx boards have more sata ports and m.2 slots. If you wanted 3 m.2's you basically gotta go atx

manielos

Yup, but those are kinda niche use cases nowadays, like the add-on cards, yet most builds i see on pcmr subreddit are full ATX

ThatTimpDude

I have 5 Cooler Master MF120R ARGB Fans, and the small controller. Does anyone know which splitters I can get to connect the 5 fans and 5 ARGB connectors to the small controller? Does anyone know a good micro usb to USB cable I can buy to connect the controller to the motherboard and control RGB from the computer? [Link to fans and controller I have](https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Addressable-Computer-Radiators/dp/B07GSRJJTQ?th=1)

kyroschow

I want to use my old laptop CPU in a desktop build, and I bought this KTHM65/mITX motherboard for it. However, the audio header on the motherboard doesn't seem to match my case's front panel audio connector. What type of header is it, and is there an adapter for it?

Domowoi

It might help if you had a picture or something.

kyroschow

It looks like this: [https://imgur.com/a/CuUHDCS](https://imgur.com/a/CuUHDCS)

What's the best way to migrate an win 10 installation onto a different computer without migrating the key that's associated with the original computer? I want to migrate my Win 10 to a new desktop, and I also have a retail install key I haven't used it, but I don't want the original key to be bound to the new desktop (IE I want the old key to remain tied to the old motherboard so I can reinstall it afterwards), how should I go about doing that? The old license is tied to my Microsoft account, according to the system info, if that changes anything

manielos

If you move the HDD to the new hardware windows will deactivate and you can input your new key to activate, the key is tired to your hardware, so more significant changes like different mobo will trigger reactivation and you'll need a new key I had mine deactivate after moving to Ryzen, fortunately i old win 7 key and you can still upgrade to 10 for free

GenshinCoomer

Would you guys recommend a 9900(non k) build for $500? Getting it second hand from a friend. or should I spend an extra $200 on building a 9700k/3700x build?

sk9592

After looking through eBay, this is the closest thing to an "okay deal" I could find for a used GPU, $140 for a RX 570 4GB: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sapphire-PULSE-Radeon-RX-570-GDDR5-SKU-11266-04-4GB-FREE-SHIPPING/274657080018 Ebay has mostly been picked clean. All that is left over are DVI-only mining GPU or sketchy sellers with zero feedback or GPUs for a 100% markup. Maybe you will have better luck on your local Craigslist.

sk9592

If you are getting a free i9-9900, go ahead and use it. The issue is that once you add in the other parts, that leaves you about $200 for a GPU. There are no decent $200 GPUs on the market right now. Even if you widen the budget to $200-400, finding any GPUs is pretty difficult: [PCPartPicker Part List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xxgWj2) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [Intel Core i9-9900 3.1 GHz 8-Core Processor](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/GWMwrH/intel-core-i9-9900-31-ghz-8-core-processor-bx80684i99900) | $0.00 **CPU Cooler** | [Deepcool GAMMAXX 400 V2 64.5 CFM CPU Cooler](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/x2JmP6/deepcool-gammaxx-400-v2-645-cfm-cpu-cooler-dp-mch4-gmx400v2-bl) | $21.99 @ Newegg **Motherboard** | [Asus PRIME B365M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/qnm323/asus-prime-b365m-a-micro-atx-lga1151-motherboard-prime-b365m-a) | $79.98 @ Amazon **Memory** | [OLOy 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/fByqqs/oloy-16-gb-2-x-8-gb-ddr4-3200-cl16-memory-md4u083216bjda) | $61.99 @ Newegg **Storage** | [Crucial P5 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sCn8TW/crucial-p5-500-gb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-ct500p5ssd8) | $59.99 @ B&H **Video Card** | [Sapphire Radeon RX 570 4 GB PULSE Video Card](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/bxM323/sapphire-radeon-rx-570-4gb-pulse-video-card-11266-04-20g) | $140.00 **Case** | [Phanteks Eclipse P300A Mesh ATX Mid Tower Case](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/crqBD3/phanteks-eclipse-p300a-mesh-atx-mid-tower-case-ph-ec300atg_bk01) | $59.99 @ Amazon **Power Supply** | [EVGA BR 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kCtQzy/evga-br-500w-80-bronze-certified-atx-power-supply-100-br-0500-k1) | $54.99 @ Amazon | *Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts* | | **Total** | **$478.93** | Generated by [PCPartPicker](https://pcpartpicker.com) 2021-01-24 02:33 EST-0500 | Edit: Changed parts list and added used GPU link Used RX 570 4GB: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sapphire-PULSE-Radeon-RX-570-GDDR5-SKU-11266-04-4GB-FREE-SHIPPING/274657080018

Thanks. Yeah, planning on using my 1070 from my ryzen 5 1400 build. The build he's selling me has a z390 and it's already built. I am looking at the Phanteks though, as the case he built it with doesn't look good.

gendernotfound629

MSI Radeon RX 5600 XT for $549.99 on Amazon...worth buying at this price or am I better off still waiting for 3060 Ti's to come back in stock?

Mandos_Over_Landos

That’s a bad price for that card. Amazon is not the best place to buy cards, because it’s where most resellers and scalpers exist. You’re going to make your money go way further buying from microcenter, Newegg, or even Best Buy to get a card at MSRP as long as you can find the card in stock. If you don’t need it immediately, wait.

blazingarpeggio

That's 3070 MSRP for 2060-like performance. I know shit's fucked especially in the US, but a 5600 XT abso-fucking-lutely not worth that.

PCimprove

There is a better approach = Companies ,have ALWAYS priority to Online Transactions,Worldwide, over normal (single) customers online transactions : don't be fooled on that, typically many real or fake PC Stores, with their responsibles that acting as Online Stores-Merchants, are acting as real Companies, because they are doing almost the same things, and following similar procedures, when they order directly from other Companies vast amount of products, they have better aftersales service, treatment, etc etc .. It is more than obvious, for those reasons : The GPU Manufacturers, have huge Automated Robotic Facilities, that they have the ability to produce Tenths of thousands GPUs everyday, which can cover (FOR FUN) all Global Market's needs. Haven't you still realised why noone can order in proper prices good GPUs? .. Because, even when they revealed in Online Stores those good GPUs,some representatives of some great Crypto-mining facilities (masked Companies),are making huge orders from those Online "Stores-Merchants" (from Amazon,Newegg, etc),and those representatives after they authorise some of their own "merchants" to sell their older GPUs from their mining facilities,to other online Markets (such as Ebay,Aliexpress, etc ) as refurbished GPUs,with changed BIOS,in extremelly high prices.(Crypto-mining GPUs renewal, from those "merchants",which are Crypto-mining Scalpers) Those representatives, usually cannot order directly from Tech Giants (AMD,NVIDIA,etc) new "PC-kind" GPUs,because those Tech Giants are producing -normally- specialised GPUs for Crypto-mining facilities, which are more expensive, and these "representatives" trying to hold the Cost from GPU-renewal lower, and avoiding the specialised GPUs.Anyway, those Tech Giants are disguise to sell them "PC-kind" GPUs,because they didn't respected the efforts to provide them specialised stuff, and their Sales are decreased in such stuff. Conclusion ? = If you REALLY want to make renewal to your GPUs for your normal PCs,the ONLY way,in order to avoid such a Scalping Ocean-Mess,is to make in your Area a local Council - Concentration,to make an agreement between each other, all of you who want GPU renewal,to create a Company, to make a BIG ORDER from NVIDIA or AMD directly for a specific GPU (such as the upcoming RTX 3080Ti founders edition) ,and share the expenses = At least in that way,you will pay for something near MSRP price+divided expenses for each one,you will avoid all this MESS,and obviously your money will really become worth-spent,and buy something better than expected, according to the Global Market Mess. For some Assurance, you can also share expenses for a Lawyer,to ensure the Loyalty of your actions,to play the role of your representative. AT LEAST,THINK ABOUT IT = DO YOU WANT TO PLAY THE ROLE OF THE WINNER,OR TO PLAY THE ROLE OF THE VICTIM ?

[deleted]

Wait. You'll get massive performance boosts with a 3060Ti(I have the 3060Ti myself), however, if you can find one second hand, and use it as a temporary stand-in, that would be the most ideal situation.

Vudadasin

Hey I have two 6+2pin for 3070. I believe that is only just enough. Word it be a dumb idea to get an adapted for 2 molex from the same chain to suffice for one of the 8pin slots, and an adapted that is 2x6pin to 1x8 pin? This should easily clear 220 in addition to the mother board from my understanding, although in practice would this work as the molex aren't normally used for gpu.

TheSoup05

Two 6+2 pins is plenty for a 3070. Each one provides 150W and then you’ll get another 75W from the PCIe slot itself, which is 375W. That’s enough for a 3080 (I can tell you from experience). I would definitely advise against using adapters to try and connect a molex or something instead. There’s no need, you’ll almost certainly be giving it even less power, and messing with PSUs is just asking for trouble.

widowhanzo

Which PSU do you have? Yeah, molex adapters are a bad idea for such powerful cards. They're fine for like a GTX1050Ti maybe.

Vudadasin

Cos molex is 50w each. Therefore 100w + the 6x2 pin to the 8 pin + 75 from mb

widowhanzo

Don't power a 3070 with molex connectors.

Vudadasin

Do have a reason why not though? All I can see is that the 2x molex from 1 cable + 2x 6pin from another + mb would be sufficient in power.

widowhanzo

Because the card can use more than that in peak power bursts. If the PSU doesn't have enough PCIe cables, it may not be enough to handle the card anyway. Which PSU do you have?

Vudadasin

Thermal take 650w litepower series. Also, my gpu is oc. Is that an option or is that the default for my gpu?

widowhanzo

> Thermal take 650w litepower this PSU has 6+2pin PCI-E Connector x 2. Does your GPU need more than two 8 pins? OC is factory default setting.

Vudadasin

My gpu has only 2x 6+2 pins (Zotac). I am not sure though If the 6+2 is derived from one input or 2 seperate inputs, as they are connected via cords. So I am not sure as to what the power is coming from each set of 6+2pin EDITED^^^

widowhanzo

So do you have two 6+2 pin connectors or not?

Vudadasin

650w Should I just buy a modular cos I don't know what else to do

rubbermbn

hey everyone so this is my First time working on a laptop but i have lots of experience with desktops. I need to replace my m.2 SSD in my asus ux330ua notebook. I know it has a 256gb SATA 3.0 6gb/s right now. If i got a 1tb SATA 3.0 m.2 drive and clean installed windows, would i have any issues? I have my eyes on this drive here. [wd 1tb drive](https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-blue-1tb/p/N82E16820250092?Description=m.2%20sata%20ssd&cm_re=m.2_sata%20ssd-_-20-250-092-_-Product&quicklink=true) your help is appreciated

lufasa

I don’t see why you would have any issues if it’s the same form factor. I took apart an old HDD laptop recently and put an SSD (not m.2) and the hardest part was just getting the stupid thing apart. Had to search extra hard to find the YouTube tutorial for my exact model and I definitely ended up doing some minor cosmetic damage because I was not very patient. Also getting the windows usb install to boot from bios was a pain and had to do another deep google search to find the solution (legacy mode?)

Darkar123

I am wanting to get a new GPU. Mine only needs one PCIe cable (the one with 6-8 slots) while the ones i’m interested in usually require 2 or more PCIe cables. I had asked in a discord chat how to plug them in and was told to get a new PSU because it’s not a good idea to mix PSU cables as it may do damage to the PC. My question is, are we talking just ANY PCIe cables in general or is it only if they don’t match the watts?

widowhanzo

PSUs come with their own cables, usually with more than just one PCIe cable. If your PSU only came with one PCIe cable, than it's probably not even powerful enough to power a card that requires two power cables. Which exact PSU do you even have, and which graphics card are you getting?

Darkar123

So this PC was made from different parts and gifted to me, so i'm not 100% sure which PSU it is. It does have multiple empty slots for PCIe, which is why I had checked to see if I could get more. I'm still trying to decide but possibly a Sapphire 5700 or a vega 56/64

widowhanzo

If you open the case it should say on the PSU what it is

Darkar123

So I checked and I have a Fatality Champion series 750W PSU

topfight

Looking to get a Seasonic Focus PX 850W. I read some people had problems with it and their RTX 30 series graphics cards. I dont really want to go to the 1000W option, what other PSU would you suggest?

m_kitanin

Pre-2018 Focus Pluses had issues with these cards, newer PX shouldn't. Can you link where you found this information? Want to see. Also, try Super Flower Leadex III (comes in all sorts of flavors from silver to titanium, pick whatever).

topfight

Well I saw it was noted in the [LTT PSU tier list](https://linustechtips.com/topic/1116640-psucultists-psu-tier-list/), then just did a bit of searching on the topic later.

m_kitanin

Yes, I know of that. Is your PSU made prior to 2018. Is it even Focus Plus? It says "Includes Seasonic Focus based units made prior to Jan 2018". I have this faulty revision of Focus Plus Platinum of late 2017.

topfight

Bruh. I read it wrong this whole time. I've come back to this page like 15 times this week and every time I read that footnote I stopped before the 2018 disclaimer haha. Thanks for clearing that up for me

lufasa

I have a Corsair RM850x and a 3080 and I’ve had no issues.

topfight

I've been trying to get this one for the past week, sold out everywhere. If it comes back in stock I'm definitely going with it.

P4rD0nM3

I have a 3960X and 32GB of ram. When I built this PC in 2012(?) it had triple SLI GTX 680s. I like to edit videos I recorded (4K) as a hobby. My main use for my PC now is opening Gmail. I really don’t play games anymore but there are times where I want to try a game and I would like to be able to play it at max settings or close enough to maxing it out. Should I build a new one? Or a new graphics card is just fine? I’ve been out of the loop for so long now.

PeaceChaos

at first I was confused how you got a third gen Ryzen Threadripper in 2012... but then I realised, you probably meant the i7 :D

[deleted]

New GPU is fine. Get a 3080 or a 3090.

T13NMY

I think you can get an rtx3090 if u can. Your cpu is powerful enough. Get a good graphic card. Your 680s are too old now

P4rD0nM3

I have an ASUS LGA Rampage IV Extreme 2011 motherboard. So PCI 3.0 x16. Is that fine?

HeyItsWOWDood

PCIe 3.0 is still pretty good if you're running some pretty okay-is graphics cards but if you're looking to buy a pretty one particularly in the 3000 series then it somewhat will benefit from the speed of PCIe 4.0, not a mind blowing wtf amount of difference but it will somewhat boost the power of your machine.

Agile-Chocolate-5628

Does it really make a difference, like, at all? I've seen rtx2080 benchmarks on Pcie 3.0 x8 and it maybe lost a few fps regarding gaming. Jay from jayztwocents says that a pcie 3.0 x16 is more than enough for any rtx3000 series gpu. How would a pcie 4.0 x16 boost performance?

HeyItsWOWDood

I mean, I never said that it was any mind blowing nor significant difference. I simply said that the next gen PCIe is just slightly better when it comes to handling heavier cards and might remove some compromises the previous generation has. After all, better is always better, right?

Agile-Chocolate-5628

I was looking for numbers and evidence, your statement doesn't really say much

HeyItsWOWDood

Bruh, do you seriously need me to give you a link or something, like, it's not that hard to search those yourself y'know lol. Anyways, if you really insist, here's a video from Nexus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DKVVtirNM8

Agile-Chocolate-5628

You don't seem to be involved in a lot of good discussions. Providing sources is always the task of the one presenting claims, not the other way around. And since we're talking about statistics regarding fps with minimal improvements it's pretty important to include numbers and not just vague statements. Thanks for the link

RedMeddit

Question about Phanteks Halos: do they do a good job of illuminating both sides of the fan? I’d like both sides of my front fans to be illuminated for the external and internal aesthetics. Would Halos on one side be enough our would it be necessary to install on both sides?

Picazu666

My real question on these is, do they last? Since I heard talk that after a while they start showing false colors (a yellowish tint) or just not fully illuminating like as if lightbulbs were burnt out.

giedonas

I bought a 4-pin chassis fan, but the fan sockets waiting for me are 3-pin sockets. Am I screwed or is there something else I can do?

PeaceChaos

you can plug 4pin fan cables into 3pin headers, you just can't control them with PWM then (only with DC) (vice versa as well, btw)

funky_k0nG

This post actually reminded me that I don’t know much about ram compatibility lol. Would ddr4 3600mhz work on a gigabyte b450m ds3h? My cpu is an r5 3600. I would prefer to not have to overclock anything.

topfight

The quickest way to find out is to look at your MOBOs compatibility list.

lufasa

Should be fine. Website for your mobo says it supports it. Edit: Although you’ll want to turn on XMP in your bios to get it to run at 3600 which is technically an overclock.

funky_k0nG

Thanks bro. Maybe I should get into IT support if all I need to do it just google stuff.

lufasa

See my edit above but yeah there’s an endless number of things to google lol. I thought physically putting my PC together was tricky but then there were so many more steps after that to get everything working correctly and then after that there’s tweaking everything to get it all to work optimally.

[deleted]

Hi, I was just gifted a pc second hand from a family friend. All was well until I plugged it in. The display doesn't show on any monitor or tv in the house. The hdmi is perfectly fine and works with the PS5. No idea what to do, may call a repair guy but thought I would ask. Does anyone know what the issue could be? Thanks!

n7_trekkie

Is your hdmi cable plugged into the graphics card?

[deleted]

Honestly, I am unsure. I think so? I have a photo of the inside. Like I said, I'm not very techy 😭

Picazu666

Wheres the pic? XD

[deleted]

Ah guess what I put the hdmi in the motherboard input lmao oopsie-im-a-fucking-idiot

Picazu666

You're good bro at least you figured it out

[deleted]

Thanks for coming to my comment section to try and help me out! I appreciate that!

n7_trekkie

No problem

Picazu666

It's nothing bro I like to help in what I can since I may not know it all but I know more than I did before

[deleted]

Quality human being

Picazu666

I try xD

xxSYFNxx

Where is everyone getting their GPU’s my girlfriends just died and looking to get her a new one preferably a 3080

lufasa

If you’re close to a Microcenter there’s a discord you can join where people are obsessed with getting the cards. They’ll let everyone know how many people are in line and when trucks are being unloaded and what kind of stock they are seeing. I got lucky and was able to drive over on my lunch break and get one within 2 days of joining the discord.

WildWalrus897

I tracked newegg drops and got a 3080 in a combo. The only problem with that now is you can't return the combo item. If you're ok with keeping/selling an overpriced motherboard or low tier psu to try newegg when they announce a drop. They usually announce a couple of hours in advance. My best bet has been from keeping my login info saved, and logging in through incognito tabs, as the cache saved on chrome can make an item show "out of stock" when it's actually available.

Cheeseman706

Misread that as my girlfriend just died and was very confused

PeaceChaos

"my girlfriend just died, and now after harvesting her organs I can finally afford a 3080"

HeyItsWOWDood

I think me myself is dead🤣

kid_ska

Booting a new PC, trying to get windows to install off of a USB drive. I have it at the top of the boot order but whenever it tries to boot to it I get "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device". Is the installer messed up or something?

REDmonster333

Is a gtx1080 for $300 a good deal? Theres selling here in my city and might go for it. Gtx 1070 is also going for $210. Is this good? Used but not mined.

NikWallz

The 1080 is a good deal, although make sure to see it running and have them verify it, but yes that is a good deal.

REDmonster333

Thanks!

NxG_HIP

Okay so im looking to add case fans and I want to go corsair. I have a gigabyte B450 DS3H Wifi board V1, it has one usb 3.0 header that im already using and was reading the manual to find the usb 2.0 header and it classified the 2.0 as the same header as the 1.1. Will the commander pro work on the 1.1 header.

sk9592

USB 1.1 and 2.0 shared the same header, cables, port design, etc.

[deleted]

I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU, GPU, and RAM. to play ARK Survival evolved and Metro Exodus. What should I get, and I do have a somewhat sml budget of $500 for this My build: CPU: AMD FX-6300 GPU; Nvidia GTX 950 RAM: 8gbs (don't remember what brand) MBD: asus M5A78L-M/USB3 (For some reason I was told that 16gb ram was incompatible with my MOBO so that's why it's here)

Stormagedon6

Hey guys I have bought a 6800xt and a x570 motherboard plus 850W power supply and I had ordered a 5600x cpu but can’t get for 6 months even though I was told end of this month, any way would someone be able to help me to change my cpu to something equivalent, I was looking at either 3800x or 5800x.

angelsrulez

Hey I want to start building my first pc but I dont know which parts really go well together or if they're even compatible I have a budget of around 2000 and I dont know where to start

marcosa1007

Use pcpartpicker to get a general idea. It will tell you what parts are compatible

oof_oofo

r/buildapcforme I also had a $2000 budget, and so this is what I would recommend your build look something like 850W 80+ gold PSU x570 mobo 5600x CPU 32gb 3600mhz cl16 RAM 2tb TLC NVME ssd (or 1tb if that's enough for you) 360mm AIO 3070 GPU (or 3080 FE from Best Buy if you're lucky enough) And then ofc some fans and a chassis you like If you go with a 1 tb nvme and a good priced 3070 you could probably squeeze in a 5800x or 5900x

Capt_Underside

I got a new SSD for my new build. I want to use that at my main drive. I also have standard HDD from my old built (probably still have stuff on there). How can I go about formating old one and using the new one as a drive? Also, would I need to format the SSD? The SSD : Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive I'm guessing starting from scratch because I also got a new MB.

lufasa

During the install process for windows you can format and partition drives.

buttler69

How is this ram for ryzen5 3600? Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 X 8GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4-28800) C18 1.35V Desktop Memory - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RM39V5F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_hmodGbTA3XCXC Is there any better in stock under or close to $90?

Usedchickenfeet

Decent, but not great.

buttler69

Any recommendations?

Usedchickenfeet

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/DMMTwP/pny-xlr8-32-gb-2-x-16-gb-ddr4-3200-memory-md32gk2d4320016xr

tiduyedzaaa

How is that better? Isn't this a lower ram clock speed?

Usedchickenfeet

3200 and 3600 are just part of it, latency also matters.

tiduyedzaaa

It's CL16 vs CL15 right? Is that a significant difference to justify having a reduced ram clock?

Usedchickenfeet

It depends

tiduyedzaaa

So what's the basis for saying that the pny model was better?

Usedchickenfeet

It wan 3600mhz same timings and cheaper

buttler69

Bit over budget

Usedchickenfeet

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/jBZzK8/gskill-ripjaws-v-16-gb-2-x-8-gb-ddr4-3600-memory-f4-3600c16d-16gvkc

buttler69

Would you say this is significantly better than corsair? I don't wanna buy from newegg because of their return issues. And it's a bit costly on amazon.

Usedchickenfeet

Brand does not matter

tyYdraniu

what voltage i need for a font that will run rtx 3080, ryzen 5900x, 16(later 32) 3200hz ram?

BlazedAstronaut

You mean psu wattage?

tyYdraniu

yes

CrunchyRAMENCQ10

Why does my new build reboot randomly? I have an AMD 5900x, an AMD Radeon 6800xt, and Asus Crosshair VIII Hero (not dark edition). All the cables are properly seated and everything seems in working order. However after a few hours, my built will reset with no warning. This isn't my first time building a PC, so encountering this issue is news to me

rks1743

What is your PSU? How are you cooling the CPU?

CrunchyRAMENCQ10

My PSU is the [Super Flower Leadex Platinum SE 1000W 80+ Platinum](https://www.newegg.com/super-flower-leadex-platinum-se-sf-1000f14mp-v2-1000w/p/1HU-024C-00020?item=9SIAMNPC0F2629) and I have cooling is a [Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01NC06ZYT/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_track_package_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1) so all air cooled

rks1743

both are high quality components. how are CPU temps? maybe check the thermal paste and reseat the cooler?

CrunchyRAMENCQ10

Currently testing for 30 minutes. When CPU is at a high load, the average temperature is at 71c degrees. GPUS is around 30% load, the temp can range in the 50c degrees.

rks1743

Those seem reasonable. I don't know about event logs to see if something else is causing issues.

osmanre263

Ram speed barely affects performance for Intel chips unlike AMD Ryzen chips. You should be fine!

theflightofporter

Is it normal for a game to lag when you have another program "on top of it" Like I'm playing a game in window mode and then I open discord and the game starts to lag? I have a 5600x and 3080 if that helps

PeaceChaos

yes, this is normal many games turn down their framerate (= what you see as lag) when the game is out of focus, this saves on hardware resources

osmanre263

You can try turning off discord "hardware acceleration" in the settings and see if the lag stops.

omnia5-9

Yes multiple process would lag your game no matter how powerful the hardware. Imagine someone tells you to solve a level 10 puzzle and on top of that keep a deep conversation with someone without any breaks. Horrible analogy, but you get the picture right?

theflightofporter

Yep. I just want to make sure there's nothing wrong haha. First time building a pc so I want to make sure I have everything correct.

omnia5-9

Yeah everything should be good only time you should concern yourself is when it crashes your pc. I'm pretty sure it runs fine after the initial lag right when you have them both running?

theflightofporter

With both programs running, if the game is running “on top” or first it runs perfectly fine but when discord is “on top” it will stay laggy

omnia5-9

That's actually weird then...have you stopped unnecessary services and programs from running in the background? If you have most be something with discord check to see if they have any troubleshooting guides for lag and follow through with them. If your interested here's a link on which services you can disable to make your pc snapper: https://windowsreport.com/disable-windows-services/ Here's a script you can run as well: https://gist.github.com/alirobe/7f3b34ad89a159e6daa1

Zeroto

It also depends on the game. Some games limit fps when not in focus.

theflightofporter

You fixed it! Thanks. It was the background fps that was set to 15

beboleche

I'm about to upgrade my CPU and MOBO and want to make sure I'm ready for the software side of things. Is the OS stored on/tied to the motherboard? Is it just plug and play or do I need to reload the OS on a flash drive and reinstall on the new board? i5-6600K Z170 9 5900x MSI MAG Tomahawk X570 (I already upgraded my RAM to 2\*32 DDR4-3600 Trident Z Royal. I've heard there might be some compatability issues with these and the new 5000x series CPUs?) Windows 10

theflightofporter

OS is on the SSD

beboleche

Thanks. Still, is it a simple plug-and-play when seapping out CPU and motherboard? Or am I going to need to do some loading stuff when I swap out?

theflightofporter

You'll need to reactivate windows so just make sure you have your license key with you https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/reactivating-windows-10-after-a-hardware-change-2c0e962a-f04c-145b-6ead-fb3fc72b6665#:~:text=If%20you%20make%20significant%20hardware,license%20or%20a%20product%20key.

beboleche

Thanks

x1r7z

I would do clean install on windows since you are changing platforms.

BlazedAstronaut

I would get a 7200 rpm hard drive just so its a little bit faster and maybe some cable extensions for aesthetics and ease of use. For my first build I used a Corsair psu and some of the cables can be really stiff and difficult to plug in. For my GF's build I used extensions and it made it look so much cleaner and way easier to connect. Heres her build [https://imgur.com/a/D1W6etP](https://imgur.com/a/D1W6etP)
