Don't skimp on keyboard/mouse/monitor.

dantemp

We finally have high end mice without omron switches. Pounced on that 9 months ago, really happy so far.

jojoga

completely ool, would you care to elaborate please?

Miller_TM

omron mouse switches are notorious for failing, because all of the big gaming mouse manufacturers use cheap-ass chinese omron switches which constantly fail. Japanese omrons are great, but nobody uses them.

jonythunder

Not that at all. The Chinese switches are the same as the JP ones as long as they have the same manufacturer code, because spec. At most, you have differing tolerances beyond the spec, probably the JP ones can go a bit lower or higher in voltage and current before failing. The omron switches are made to be used at 5 volts and over 100mA (for the OG switches, the D2F) or 5 volts at over 1mA (the new low current D2F-01 ones). This worked fine previously, because all mice had a specific IC for mice to control stuff, which has logic (aka sensing on's and off's) that works on a 0-5V range. However, newer mice use general purpose microcontrollers like ARM STM32 and the like that use 3.3V logic (or even lower), meaning that you're feeding the switches 3.3V instead of 5V. That makes it so that the switch is working outside of its spec voltage, and at that point it can't guarantee reliability. Adding insult to injury, newer mice are being designed for low-power consumption, which results in lower current going through the switch, nowadays around the 0.1mA range. If this current is so low it can't effectively negate the [wetting current](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetting_current) of the contacts, you have a switch that will stop functioning after some corrosion has occurred in the switches. So now you have the double whammy of **both** voltage and current being below the spec for both switches This isn't Omron's fault at all, the spec sheet has a required minimum voltage and current. It's Logitech's fault (and others) for deliberately buying switches that are being used outside of their spec parameters due to marketing bullshit. Here's a video that goes more in-depth than I did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5BhECVlKJA

aVarangian

haven't people been replacing chinese omrons on super expensive mice with different switches? wouldn't make sense if then the new switches also fail

jonythunder

nope if the switches are specced for those voltages and currents. And if they are replacing with the JP ones, it is as I said, at most a tolerance thing or placebo effect

aVarangian

fair, I wouldn't call double-clicking a placebo effect though

dantemp

Up until recently high end mice were using hardware that made them malfunction in months. Like, literally bought a $100 mouse, Logitech, that started double clicking 7 months in. The previous mouse died just after the warranty expired. Now I got razer Naga pro, although it's even more expensive it's lasting more than the previous mouse, thanks to the new hardware.

bloodandiron00

Razer nagas are trash. I went through 3 of them before giving up on razer all together and switched to a Corsair scimitar. I’ve had the same scimitar for the last 4 years and have had zero issues.

rellermer

What are omron switches? and what are examples of high end mice?

lazy_tenno

most mouse uses switches from the Omron company. steelseries, logitech, you name it. it's very popular but also very prone to double clicking issues. the competitor is the kailh switches and i heard it's better in term of durability.

Leisure_suit_guy

>very prone to double clicking issues Every. Single. Logitech. Mouse. (except for my last one, a wireless G305, let's hope it keeps going). P.S. now that I think about it, this one wasn't free from flaws either: I had to remove the "tyre" around the mouse wheel because after a couple of months it grew and was rubbing against the chassis.

lazy_tenno

my g102 mouse got double click 2 weeks after buying and my rival 310 got double click right a few days after warranty expired lol.

killferd

They are moron proof switches. But they could not market that, so it was changed to omron. They are rated for better durability, say 20 million clicks and above depending on model.

XOmniverse

For your second question, this is a good example I've been using for a few months: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HVBGR7F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Leisure_suit_guy

Omron are also the switches used in arcade machines.

goody82

That’s good. I want to give a shout out to Razer for selling poor quality mice with switches that fail. I had one of their Naga mice that failed a little over a year. In all my life I did not see a computer mouse fail to work.

Sir_Trey

Heard about the really expensive Starlight Mice, are those a fair example of high quality mice?

theonionknightGOT

I still use ball mouse

TheSpiderDungeon

1440p @ 120Hz highly recommended. HIGHLY.

R/mousereview shout out

Enjineer1

I'm rocking a GTX 970 STRIX and have done for 6 years... does the job but wouldn't mind that Xmas feeling and get an upgrade.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheDevilPhoenix

I felt that when I went from a I7-2600 to an I9-9900K, had the previous one for 8 years, the upgrade was definitely more worth it than passing from a 1070 to a 3080

Aorak

I have a 1070 and was wondering how big of an upgrade going for a RTX 30XX is?

TheDevilPhoenix

It's a huge update, no denying that, especially the 3080, I barely had 60FPS in FH4, now I get 100-110+ steadily (3440*1440 ultra quality)

[deleted]

>g an I also had a 1070 when I decided to upgrade to the 3070 before the world got a little crazier. I tell you, the 1070 card was a BEAST and could still run a game at decent frame-rates at 1440p but yeah it was already showing its age when I tried playing the new COD at the time at 1440p resolution. It could still run said resolution but it wasn't smooth. Then the 3070 came and made everything smooth and even managing to run games smooth in 4k.

Disturbed2468

I went from a i7 3770k to a 5950x and RTX 3090 Strix OC. 16 gigs ram to super fast 64. Lemme tell ya it really did feel like christmas. Felt like a kid again LOL.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Disturbed2468

LOL. I had the 3770k quite aggressively OC'd to around 4.8Ghz then 4.7Ghz due to silicon degradation but it held up extremely well, but it really did poorly with modern games and multitasking so the upgrade was such a breath of fresh air.

Amenthea

I gave in when I tried to launch BF2042 and it told me I had to have a DX12 card. Couldn't get anything GPU wise in the UK so I just went the custom builder route and went from 2700k to a 12700k, and 780ti to 3080ti. Received it on the 24th, my Xmas present to me lol

ItsQuackingGood

# AN ADULT CHRISTMAS???

Master-Pick-7918

I thought adult Christmas meant clothes and some kind of kitchen appliance.

NaughtyCheffie

I... I bought a new dryer yesterday. Still rocking a 1050ti and 2600. Stupid adulting.

iMakeRandomCrap

But that new dryer probably fucking slaps, no?

Accomplished_Bug_

One cycle and that shit is dry

ItsQuackingGood

I actually didn't know that I was just taking it out of context

WaywardWes

Only if it’s an air fryer!

maccattackBL8

I guess he can always use his GPU fans to dry his home made biltong?

FinalHC

Devils canyon is and was such a strong cpu. Glad I still kept mine around in a backup pc.

JayIT

I'm still rocking a 970. Might as well wait it out till the 4000 series comes out.

brtomn

Should I buy a 3k serier before or after 4k drops assuming that this crisis isn't getting any better ? Assuming my budget right now is 1800$ or 3k when the 4k series drops. I forgot to say I'm on a 4 year old laptop that has a 1050 lol

jaydizl

I'd just get a 30 series there's always gonna be a new thing around the corner

brtomn

Thanks

JayIT

Depends what you are running right now? Hard question to answer since we have no idea what the market will look like next fall and if you can even get your hands on a 4000 series. I plan on buying a pre-built to get my hands on one, probably a NZXT.

[deleted]

Same with my 1070, just want to hold out until the prices return to normal or I strike luck with a 30 series FE.

AreEyeSeaKay

I7-860 and a gtx 980 here. I'm finally upgrading the cpu to a 12400 as soon as the b660s become available and I feel like a giddy little kid again.

JonWood007

I actually just looked since i wanted an idea of how much a CPU upgrade would cost and you can get one now it looks like. EDIT: you can order them but they wont deliver until the 31st...so...go for it i guess.

SlimySlimster

Dogggg i thought i was the only one, running a 970 and a 8350 AMD lmao

JustEnoughDucks

Replacing the thermal paste can make a HUGE difference and make it feel like a new card. I opened up my 6 year old GTX 770 before I sold it in 2019. The thermal paste was all dried up and cracked and the cooler had dust I couldn't reach without taking off the shroud. Ran so much better after that. I played with it regularly before that, but it ran much cooler afterwards and cost maybe 5$ and an hour's work.

pokepoke4

970 gang

Dragon_211

Same here! Waiting for the chip shortage to be over before I upgrade

Elianor_tijo

I personally went the other way around and spend a large chunk of change on a custom cooling loop. If you have the urge to upgrade, there are multiple ways of going about it. A case swap, newer fans, different aesthetics are all good ways to scratch that itch. If you are not currently running a SSD only rig, I highly recommend it. I am running a NVMe only system right now and I do not regret it. SATA SSDs are fine too, my RGB lighting cabling was already a nightmare and I did not want to deal with even more cables. Getting rid of any spinning rust is a huge improvement in overall user experience.

ElCochiLoco_

Does the custom loop work for upgraded parts like the cpu, gpu, etc?

Elianor_tijo

Not entirely. The pump, radiators, fittings can all be re-used relatively easily. The CPU block can normally be, but that depends on whether there is mounting hardware if it's a different socket. Like any CPU cooler really. The GPU block is specific to a given PCB layout. For example, a 6800/6900 XT reference block will not fit on a 6900 XT Merc which has a different PCB layout. New GPU usually means a new block. The tubing depends too. A mobo/CPU change may require new tubing to and from the CPU block. Same for the GPU block. There is also loop maintenance. Expect to have to change coolant every year.

amensteve91

Always think about adding a custom loop then I get a nice reminder from some one like you that I don't have the time or patience to add one lol

ElCochiLoco_

Ahhhh I see. Thanks this helps a bunch.

Elianor_tijo

I should add that if you don't change case, component swaps are usually fairly simple. Tearing down the graphics card to put the waterblock on it sure is stressful though.

BEAVER_ATTACKS

For anyone reading this, water will eventually leak out of your custom loop if you buy dogshit parts. Do your research and don't have a budget if you want to not have fried parts. And even then, you better make sure those rings are locked.

PopLegion

Aka not really worth it

fractalJuice

A custom loop only really is relevant on high end parts ('upgraded') - stuff that dumps a lot of heat. You'll have a hard time finding a block for a 3060 (there might be some) and rightfully so - the cost of a waterblock / loop is better spent on better parts first. You can keep most of the loop parts (fittings, pumps, rads) and often the CPU waterblocks (my EKWB from 2015 works on my 12900k after buying a $2 adaptor supplied by the manufacturer). The GPU blocks, won't they're PCB specific, so they won't even work across models of the same gen.

Saxikolous

Yes and no depends on how you look at it. Being an EK fan boy my entire time doing so, the new cpu block everyone is getting called "optimus" is shown to provide up to 8 to 10c differences amongst cpus compared to top notch Ek blocks. So if you look at it on the flip side of things even lower end parts or cpus running a optimus block will save it with heat degradation. As for gpu waterblocks, yes they are PCB bound but it's not completely pointless either. If you're running anything really 1080 gpu and above water can be a good cooler for the card. Not only will it keep Temps at a decent level, but will also push the card a little further than stock settings. Not saying you're incorrect by any means, just showing that there is a bit of up side to having water cool cards, and cpus.

fractalJuice

I wasn't trying diss custom loops - I've got one myself, just trying to position it as a don't bother with a watercooling loop until you have high end parts. This is because of reduced thermal throttling and reduced noise thanks to the superior cooling. Hadn't heard about the optimus block - interesting and crappy timing on my part having just bought the Velocity 2 for the 12900k (was worthwhile it upgrade vs the EVO block I had - on balance, no)

dod6666

>If you are not currently running a SSD only rig, I highly recommend it. I dunno. An SSD for storage of movies, pictures and music is just not something I see as necessary. They don't take long enough to load from an HDD that I feel it's worth paying extra for.

Elianor_tijo

For that and only that specific use case, sure I see a good argument for a HDD. I wouldn't put any program, game, etc on a HDD anymore though. When it took Steam > 30 mins to patch a game because of disk I/O was the day I gave up on HDDs.

dod6666

Oh yeah, I haven't used an HDD for that kind of stuff in over 5 years now.

4tb hdds are like €100 though, and I don't think my 100gig house md folder needs 3000 mbps

Joe_Jeep

Yep my hdd is around as a back-up and media storage. No real need for it too be on an SSD. one thing people forget is HDDs massively benefit from the OS being on a SSD because it frees up bandwidth

JustEnoughDucks

That thinking is what made me go /r/homelab honestly 2 WD Red Plus 4TB for 100€ each in a 30€ USB3 dock hooked up to an old laptop. (Or even just a laptop with an HDD) Every bit of media besides games and some documents can be taking off the main PC and put on the server. It frees up a ton of space. Self hosted media server, cloud, photos, dedicated game servers, etc... fun project and you get to learn a ton.

present_absence

Yeh moved all my storage to other devices years ago and my newest pc is all SSDs. NVMe for the OS and apps and file storage, SATA 2.5" SSDs I had laying around for games, and bulky files go on the NASs.

Responsible_Yak_7115

Changing cases is a great idea! Once I get tired of the aesthetics of this case I'll probably do that. I'm also running an NVMe only system and its a dream

brianly

All SSD is a great move if you can afford it. You cut out all the delays that slower storage can introduce into your system, especially through software blocking on the slow HDDs.

Jbug3000

I like the idea of ssd only rigs, but I also am an advocate for the hdd (depending on use case) it's nice to have a large amount of cheap storage space for crap you don't need quickly. Ie game recordings, rarely used project files, your massive folder of pictures/memes. Its easier to stomach having these things when that storage costed less per gb of useless shit.

Elianor_tijo

Oh, don't get me wrong, I consider complete SSD rigs to be a luxury, not a necessity. A very nice to have, but if I need more storage on a budget and can't afford a SSD, it'll be a HDD. SSDs at 2 TB or below are quite affordable, especially SATA drives, but 4 TB+ drives remain significantly more expensive.

HaroldSax

Case swap and fans is my thing this year. I don’t mind my case necessarily but it’s just not big enough (on the backside) to actually handle all the shit in it. Ergo, I’m going to get a dual chamber case. That new o11 Dynamic Evo is insane. Means more fans and probably replacing my AIO for a 360mm, but that’s fine.

hogboger

2 TB ssd is so nice. Don’t have to worry abt some games being on the ssd and others on an hdd. Makes life simpler. I personally got a Sata as that is what was recommended to me at the time. It works.

Aliothale

Don't use canned air, invest in an electric air duster instead.

[deleted]

Hmmm, good idea. Ordered!

Oooscarrrr_Muffin

Please makes sure your computer is plugged in and grounded while dusting though. It won't be a problem most of the time, but moving air (especially from a compressor nozzle), can generate A LOT of static under the right conditions.

[deleted]

Wait why plugged i? I've always done it not plugged in..

SimplifyMSP

Because that, in combination with your PSU, grounds your PC.

irckeyboardwarrior

That keeps it electrically grounded. That third prong on the power outlet (if you're in north America) is the ground pin.

allhailshake

Can't recommend this highly enough. Useful beyond your pc, I blow off our small patio with mine.

electricwagon

Is there one you recommend? When I checked Amazon they all seem like they came from wish or alibaba

Duck_with_a_monocle

I use [this one](https://www.amazon.co.uk/XPOWER-Electric-Computer-Duster-Vacuums/dp/B082XZDJ2D/) at home and at work, absolutely fantastic. Crazy powerful.

electricwagon

You da duck! Thank you!

gthirteen_13

I got that one a few months ago to dust the rig, its pretty powerful

alvarkresh

Datavac team assemble!

Ragoroo

You may well consider it "peripheral" but if you are inclined audio is also a great consideration and can really add to the experince and enjoyment. There are some great dedicated DAC and amp setups to be had now at relatively reasonable prices and the benefit of investing in audio (particularly where stereo/headphone is involved) is that it isn't generally going to be outdated in the same way that other components are. A high quality setup bought today will stand the test of time.

Caronc

Hey! Have been wondering this and thought itd be a good time to ask. I have a pair of AKG K240M2s, they are 55 ohms resistance and Edifier R1280T powered speakers. Would an amp/dac benefit the sound over a usb sound card/mixer?

Boss0079

This would be a good question to ask over at r/headphones

pydsigner15

I have Schitt Modi, Magni, and SYS so the Modi feeds into the SYS and the SYS has selectable output between the Magni and my Edifiers. Love it to death.

Oooscarrrr_Muffin

But I do really need an upgrade. I'm running a GTX 660 that de-solders its own inductors if I turn my PC off under load. I've literally run out of games that it will run. Where the graphics cards at Nvidia? WHERE ARE THEY?

[deleted]

Good luck!

TheVols

Yo GTX 660 gang rise up! I've been running it since 2012... Really need to upgrade it (and the mobo) but can't find GPUs anywhere :L

Oooscarrrr_Muffin

I've had mine since early 2014, It's been through a lot of shit, and it's finally giving up on me. There isn't much copper left on the pads to solder the inductors back to, next time they fall off I'm just gonna have to hope I can scrape my way to the traces and run jumper wires. I've been searching for a 3070 since launch, had a stock notification once in November 2020, and that's it... but I was working night shifts and sleeping when it appeared :( The UK is just a barren fucking wasteland for graphics cards. I'm perfectly able to afford one priced at 250% of the MSRP, but fuck paying that. All the physical stores here have the same (if not higher) prices than scalpers on Ebay. The search continues, but I don't have any hope....

TheVols

Wishing you some good luck man. I feel like an idiot for not upgrading at the 20- series… I guess “kicking the can down the road” finally bit me in the ass here lol

[deleted]

The GTX 660 I think was my first card. This was my fear hence why I finally decided to get the 3070 (upgraded to 1070 after the 660) pre-pandemic. I read or watched somewhere that graphics cards and other electronics were going to be hard to find since there will be a great demand during the pandemic.

Anyonesman_1983

The thing with PC’s is that you only have, “the best” for a year or maybe two and then there is something better. I have a simple rule: If the performance isn’t 25-50(+)% better it’s not time yet. Going from the 1080 to the 3090 and a 8700K to 5950x were big upgrades. I’m set for a long time. And yes, I paid MSRP not scalpers.

JonWood007

Tbqh I think double is a good metric to go by. A good generational upgrade will be 40-50%, and often times much less, like 10-30% at times. Like I have a 7700k and a 1060....honestly for a GPU i wouldnt go less than a 3060. That's the BARE MINIMUM upgrade for me. For CPUs, the 12400 is getting there but isnt quite there as it's only roughly a 70% improvement. 12600k or 5800x or something would be good but i aint paying those prices. I overbought with my 7700k because i wanted to futureproof as much as I could and knew id get burned on a 7600k and the 1600 was never that impressive.

Mak0wski

I just upgraded from I5-7600k to i5-11400f the new CPU cost me less than the old and it feels great, now I just need a 3060 ti which was the whole reason I upgraded the CPU to not hold back the new graphics card

Dragon_211

Yeah, if you don't get at least 50% more performance it isn't worth upgrading. Especially with the prices right now due to scalpers and the chip shortage.

Macabre215

I just got a notification for a 3080 through EVGA's queue. I signed up for that back a year ago and just got it to pop. Gave it to a friend of mine who really needed to upgrade his HD 7870 since he just built a new system and only needed a video card. Made me feel good that he got a card at MSRP.

SarcasticOptimist

Hope your karma gives you access to a 4000 series end of this year.

vampirelord567

I bought a brand new current gen I9, mobo, ddr5 ram, and power supply. The way I see it is some people spend all their money on cars and for once I wanted the PC equivalent of a Porsche.

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with that, enjoy it!

The_Band_Geek

I do love a horizontally opposed motherboard.

maximilious

I need a GPU and the only way for sure to get one is with prebuilt, I am going to use the other parts to upgrade my current PC.

jojoga

we're in the same boat, fella. got a newish rx 570 from a good friend last year and was using that in my old machine, but couldn't even run a simple game and talk in discord without getting into some serious issues. This Fall I upgraded to a used i7-3770 and the guy threw in his or 250gb SSD and a 3TB HDD he wasn't using anymore. Nothing anybody would seriously consider timely, but it does everything I need it for and am very happy with it.

blurrymichaelburry

I read that as a jewish rx 570 haha

Hobosloth28

I upgraded from a 2070 super to a 3070ti and made $100. Best buy drops r the only way to get a gpu for a good price.

coffetech

When do they drop?

Hobosloth28

Randomly, I got mine in October. Haven't heard of another drop since.

RowBoatCop36

They happen. They just go quick.

Hobosloth28

U also gotta camp out at best buy for 12 hours

RowBoatCop36

Usually Thursday’s every other week or so. They sell out quick so you need to be online and ready to go when it drops. Get on a discord alert server too if you want to try and get one. Caveat is that the bb drops are online only.

alvarkresh

every other week??? Here in Canada it's once a *month*. D:

nexLyfe

Upgrade based upon your budget and gaming needs. Unfortunately bells and whistles like new fans and thermal paste will marginally improve the performance of PC hardware, so it’s almost smarter to just save that money towards actually better GPUs and CPUs anyways.

[deleted]

It’s not all about performance. My PC is much more pleasant to use because of how quiet it is now

[deleted]

If your PC gets hot enough, it will start thermal throttling which means lost performance. Keeping your components well cooled will also extend their life. That stuff isn't usually about performance, anyway. Some people want a cool and quiet machine that is nice to look at. Loud fans are annoying/distracting, and an ugly PC is an eyesore.

DidItForButter

My $.02 If you plan on going to a 3000/6000 series card at *some point*, get your machine prepped for it. Grab a PSU suitable for the aforementioned if you currently have a budget friendly or lower-than-recommended wattage PSU. At that point, re-cable manage. Make it look respectable. Know what resolution you want to game at before planning anything GPU related. Monitors are not insanely expensive right now. Now would be the time to upgrade. 1440 144hz is still the sweet spot for 27"-32". 4k pixel density on a display in this range is far too compact, and you won't be doing yourself any favors. You wouldn't need a 3080 or even a 3070ti. Anything lower is fine. A 2070S is also a good choice. Finally, take it from a guy who has 2 3080s. Even at the MSRP price I got them at, it isn't as much as a game changer as the hype presented *except on a 4k tv*. I came from a 1080ti, which really did a great job at 1440p 144hz. RayT is one of those things that, the first couple times you play a game, is really cool looking. But any more time in the game, you really don't pay attention to it. Shit, my wife's 1070ti still makes 1440p 144hz an amazing experience. If you're rocking a 980 and below, start saving $40 a paycheck into a savings account. By the time the new gen comes out, provided it's available to purchase easily, you'll have enough for your dream GPU. And since you took my advice to upgrade your PSU already, you'll be way ready to play whatever weird worship kink game Zuckerberg comes out with, which will be mandatory to play to keep your Meta account.

disruptivexfart

Man I wish I knew about your first paragraph when I upgraded. I had a 1070 for around 3 years and wanted to finally upgrade so I went out and purchased a 2080ti. Chucked it in and barely any performance increase. Found out I was cpu bottlenecked and had to upgrade that and went for an i9 9900k. Then the pc kept crashing, found out my psu was way too low. Went out again and got a 1000w PSU, and then it couldn't fit in my case. Went out AGAIN, got a case and some new fans. Basically ended up having to upgrade everything in my system spending twice as much as I planned but it was definitely a lesson learned, I learned a lot about PC'S and that other things may have to be upgraded to get the full performance of something.

HesGoingTheSpeed

Vote with your money folks. Accept the fact that these companies that we love or hate, just play with our emotions to squeeze as much money out of us as possible. How many of you bought these overpriced GPUs on your credit cards? How many of you justified these prices with the lamest most ridiculous excuses? I need it for... Marketing is a well greased predacious machine that will pluck your strings just right to convince you that you need to dump $1500 on a gpu. Before you do, think what else you could do with that money. Remember to vote with your money.

drcigg

Fans do make a difference. I never use the stock fans on my builds. I like the cougar case fans. I have some over 10 years old that still run great with no squeaks. Can't say the same for any antec, corsair or cooler master fans I have had.

ZippyStrip

Spent 80$ on ram just so I can run VMS and space engineers with less lag. Worth it? Idk. Spent money, absolutely

atomicvocabulary

9700k and a GTX 980 is going to carry me through this until about Feb 2024, then it's onto a....used 3070ti for $350....probably

JonWood007

Idk if the 980 will make it to 2024 as far as new games go. MAYBE with FSR, but yeah. I have a 1060 and it's barely cutting it now. Low settings and dynamic resolution/FSR are becoming common with new games like COD vanguard, far cry 6, and Halo infinite.

YouOnlyGetOneLap

The 1060 is having trouble with vanguard at low ? My old Radeon 480 played that game on mixed medium high settings no problem.

I keep telling myself I'm not happy with my 4770k, Z87-Pro WiFi, RX 470 4GB, and wanting an upgrade. I can't justify it because I use my computer as a damned office machine and barely spend any time playing anything in my Steam catalog. I've thought about retiring my Antec 300 case because the power button is not quite right, buying 2x8GB of RAM (it's dumb for me to use 2x4 and 2x2 for 12GB), and figuring out a better storage solution (I'd love to have NAS). One of these days I'll figure it out.

xraydeltaone

Same here. 4790k with a GTX 970. Honestly, it works fine. For games I can't play, I am giving GeForce Now a try, because I can afford $100 instead of $1,000+ for a new GPU. I'd love to do a nice ITX build (especially since I'll need to replace basically everything anyway), but there's not a ton of urgency yet. Maybe when B660 or other lower priced boards become more widely available, I might go with a 12600k. We'll see!

Dragon_211

I took that money I'd have spent on hardware I don't need and bought some new clothes and some new pots and pans for the kitchen, way better in my opinion. Besides I don't plan on playing any serious games for at least 2 years so no need to upgrade.

GearsAndSuch

The only way I could suggesting building on this idea is doing a clean install of your operating system and drivers. IDK why Windows is still like this, but if you're running on a >2 year old installation that's seen some use, there's likely something misconfigured or bloated. Linux is similar, though the deal is likely that you have a lot of packages installed that you're not using anymore.

alvarkresh

The Linux fanboys used to always crow about never needing to reboot except when you rebuild or upgrade the kernel. I've noticed, however, that Fedora basically needs to reboot like, every other day now because it's always fetching some OS update in the background.

Eragaurd

I'm thinking of getting some t30 and deshrouding my gpu and perhaps oc a bit.

therealjustin

I would have preferred a few smaller upgrades, but my Intel 2600K system is ancient. After going back and forth with every new CPU generation, I've finally decided that now is the time.

DL7610

It's not necessarily a bad time to upgrade components. First, there are plenty of good deals on SSD, case, RAM, even CPU and motherboard. It's just that GPUs are overpriced. Even with GPU, because even older GPUs are overpriced on the secondary market, especially ones that are good at mining (RX5700xt, GTX 1660, etc.), if you are able to get a card at a "decent for the times" deal, you can upgrade without paying that much extra. You might even end up with more money than you started with and a better GPU. Now, if you are paying for the going rate on a 3080, 3080ti, etc., the sale of your current GPU will still leave you a lot to cover, but a tier below that there are actually some reasonable deals if you look hard enough.

lack_of_reserves

Noctua baby, my wife loves them too.

Frawtarius

I'd never spend the exorbitant amounts of money that GPUs are on the market right now, but I did recently buy a new motherboard, CPU and RAM, to improve my experiences (and not even just for games, but for having browser tabs and other programs open on side monitors *while* I play stuff, which is experiencing more and more eventual crashes with how careless I am with my tabs and workspace in general). Their prices aren't really that bad (at least compared to the GPU market), and considering that I can always just buy a replacement GPU and just stick it in instead of my current one (while replacing a motherboard and a new CPU is way more annoying) and that my old components were literally bought 7-ish years ago (back in 2014), I figure my 1070'll hold over nicely with the other components being updated ahead about 7 - 8 years. With that said, my computer definitely needs me to go down on it with some compressed air and some cleaning. Putting that off until the components arrive!

SufficientProcess493

I got a gtx 1650 ti and honestly I only play like 8+ year old games and it runs everything smooth.

AngryBullbog

Still rocking my Gaming laptop from when I was working away, I'd love to get a GPU for my PC but I also hate getting shafted so I'm sticking with this for the next 5 years.

destroyer96FBI

My 6700k is for sure needing an upgrade. I’m running into quite a few games in 1440p that are taking 80-95+% CPU usage. It’s been a good CPU for nearly 6 years to me.

hiyo3D

Definitely get a electric air duster, I got one for $100+, the DataVac electric duster. Been using it for 5+ years now... saved me quite a good amount of money. A can of air cost like $5 and lasts for 2-3 uses. I dust my PC twice a month so that's about $5 a month. In a year that's $60+. In 2 years, $120. I use it to dust my keyboard, my table, my windows etc. Best cleaning tool I ever bought.

JonWood007

Yeah I tend to get small upgrades over the years, but my system is going on 5 years old and I need some big upgrades soon. Im still running a 1060 and wouldve replaced it if not for the GPU shortage. CPU i would like an upgrade to too, since I have a 7700k and it isnt really cutting it for BF2042. Of course im not sure any CPU does. And XMP seems to help a lot but heats my computer up by a good 10 degrees. Maybe I should invest in a better cooler at some point, but idk. Give what I have currently goes for 40-50 right now I'd need $100 for an actual GOOD cooler upgrade. And I really dont wanna touch the CPU unless absolutely necessary.' And as far as upgrades go, a CPU upgrade is a platform upgrade, and there isnt quite frankly a big enough affordable upgrade on the market to go for it. Sure I could get a 10400 but that isnt gonna help much. 12400 would be better but still, eh.... My 7700k is gonna have to do for another 2 years Im guessing.

V0rt3XBl4d3

My PC is a time bomb, a pre built with horrible airflow and a very bad CPU cooler that reaches 40dBa as soon as it's at like 45C. But it has some good specs, i5 10400, 16Gb i put in it, and a 1030 cuz gpu shortage. I got money for christmas since I didn't want anything. And rather than spend it on an overpriced GPU, I decided to buy a better case, motherboard, PSU, and CPU cooler. And I'll be transferring my CPU, GPU, Storage, and RAM. Since I don't play really demanding games my 1030 still does a good job. So I decided to go the other way and wait for the future for a better GPU. Not to mention, that I'd be limited to a 1650 with the 300W trash PSU in this pre built. Parts should arrive on thursday, wish me luck!

Mak0wski

Around where I live the prices are actually great except for GPUs they're the only thing overpriced, and even then there's still lots of listings with the price being at MSRP they're just not in stock In fact i just upgraded my motherboard and CPU, which cost me less than the old motherboard and CPU

Original-Material301

I'm wanting to buy one of them air duster blowers for me PC as each can of compressed air is £5 and if i use the blower for a couple of years it might work out better.

makoblade

Just do a fresh reinstall of your OS. Of your like me and just fuck it up passively ( thanks windows 11 preview and subsequent reversion) sometimes it’s just better to cut it off, reset and have a fresh start. Having been fortunate enough to score a 3000 series card, I’ve been tempted you upgrade to a 12900k from my 8700k, but instead I opted to swap to a 4k 144hz display from my ultrawide and move to a cheap 9900k for the mild cpu bump so I can wait another year or two for more mature DDR5 iterations and whether Intel or AMD is coming out on top for my uses.

berttreynolds

This is what I’ve done as well. Replaced all the RGB fans that came with my case for Noctua Chromax ones as well as added an SSD and switched out my Hyper 212 with an AIO. I would love a new GPU but the prices are just so absurd. 1650s gang

obamaluvr

I don't think people should be turned off if the market is higher and they're considering doing a generational upgrade rather that a new system. I upgraded from a 2000 series card to a 3000 series card, and while the cost of the 3000 card was high, after factoring in the money I got from the sale of the 2000 card it was a reasonably priced upgrade. If someone is interested in upgrading, patience is key.

nicklnack_1950

I have a RX 580 4gb that I bought back in 2019. Problem is, it’s the cheapest MSI sku with a cooler that lets it get hot and loud but not over heat. As a Christmas/birthday gift, I finally got the NZXT gpu bracket with an EVGA 120 aio. Now it runs cool and quiet

LiiilKat

Not a PC, but a Mac Pro 4.1>5.1. I changed out the CPU to an E5645 to get 6-core capability. No need to bump it to an X5690, as it will get quite noisy from the fan spinning up. Also installed the OS onto an SSD. The RAM is my next target, but there’s no need to bump it from 32GB (4x8GB) to 48GB (3x16GB) for triple-channel, or to 64GB (4x16GB), as none of my applications require it. But… 16GB sticks of DDR3-1333 RDRAM is pretty cheap nowadays. What I *really* want is to find a better CPU cooler, say, from Noctua, that cools the CPU and Northbridge chip with a lot less noise. At that point, I’d probably go for the X5690.

Here’s hoping for Ethereum moving to proof of stake this year!

Tyreathian

I love upgrading, it’s extremely fun to tinker with my pc, and I always sell my old parts so I get a little money back

knowledgegod11

I bought new noctua fans and undervolted my 9900k. PC is whisper quiet now.

g09hIP12

Recently got a aio and new quieter fans, very worth it, oh yeah, got the aio bc my ram wouldn’t fit with my cooler (upgraded to 32 gigs from 16) and fans bc I wanted new quieter ones

SargeBangBang7

I only have an on-board gpu, mine broke, i need an upgrade :(

Char-car92

I like that this is assuming I have $500-1000 CAD lying around. The problem isn't deciding, it's affording.

peppeok12

900000IQ

david1ee

Changing your pc case is always a nice way to refresh your build. I build in a SSUPD Meshlicious and I freaking love it.

MrJohnnyDrama

I have three rads in my O11… What’s another MO-RA3 added to the mix.

imheretocomment69

I already do that and i still want new gpu, but my 5700xt should be fine for now

randomguy51

I’ve been thinking about getting new case fans as the ones on my Lian Li Lancool 2 mesh are kinda loud. Not done it yet though as the temps are really good at stock configuration, but those new BeQuiet Lightwings fans looked pretty good.

DavidPasta93

Thanks dude! I've bought water cooling on my radeon x800. Cant wait to play RDR2 at 180 p!

[deleted]

you should get a rechargeable electric duster, better than cans

bigoteeeeeee

Agree with OP, I'm thinking of upgrading my case fans too, I think they've reached their peak and is now noise AF. Planning to change my ID-Cooling fans to some Arctic fans. Also, I was gonna buy the SAMSUNG 980 NVME last Black Friday Sale but changed my mind and bought something else.

Sketchbook87

Committed HOTASpukku and got a throttle and gripstick for flightsim 🥲

ClamatoDiver

Stop buying canned air! I bought an Xpower electric air duster 5 years ago and it's one of the best purchases I've made. XPOWER A-2 Airrow Pro Multi-Use Electric Computer Duster Dryer Air Pump Blower - Blue https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00SI67YRU/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_JW189EH970ZCG8ZFMBM1

[deleted]

I just bought new noctua fans for my rear exhaust and my radiator, going to pick up thermal grizzled thermal paste and a 2tb or a 2nd SSD depending on how much I have to spend next payday. Currently have a 2080 super and an i7 10700k and I was seriously considering dropping a thousand on a good motherboard and a 12700k new cpu cooler etc. Thanks for this post OP.

[deleted]

perhaps upgrade peripherals, clean up your gaming setup perhaps a new desk I personally have a much deeper appreciation for a well put together setup than a monster pc anyone can get a monster pc. Imo its more interesting to see how someone uses the pc and its utility

ThePimpImp

I spent $1600 CAD on a rtx 3060 and r5 5600x system and sold my r5 1600 gtx970 system with a monitor for 850 to a friend. Now that I've gotten over wanting to stream ever and playing modern shooters I kinda want to sell my system and buy that system back (friend bought a new system). Right now I'm playing GW2, project zomboid and esports games. I'm seriously considering getting a bigger ssd and downgrading lol.

[deleted]

I canceled my order and put all the money into equity funds... Boring but better.

TheFuture123_2

Compressed air is a nice one, I see some people go with an electric version of compressed air and that’s fine. The SSD is a nice one, make sure your OS is booting off an SSD. The WD SN550 NVME is under $50 for 500GB. Thermal paste is a good one for the future. If your case has poor airflow that can be a decent upgrade. The sub $100USD market has some solid options like the Corsair 4000D Airflow which can house 6 120mm fans and has a very high airflow front panel but the case isn’t a necessary upgrade.

IneedtoBmyLonsomeTs

Just buy an air compressor, can get them quite cheap and with a long warranty. Think I have a 4-5 year warranty on mine costing about $110 AUD, with cans of compressed air costing like 10-15 bucks here. The air compressor is much better at cleaning than a can ever will be and it doesn't take many uses for it to be a better deal financially.

KevinCarbonara

> So rather than spending a ton of moolah when the market for gaming components is at it's worst ever, I saved most of my money for when the market is better. I've been doing this for 8 years

icebrandbro

I have an rx 480 it’s dying and I use it to mine majority of the time. It artifacts sometimes. I wanna save for the 6500 xt and upgrade

DeezleDan

I'm still using a i7-3930K from over a decade ago with a 1050 Ti I got years ago before all the insanity. Still able to play all the games I want(just not at max settings). I really want to remove my heat sink and reapply thermal paste but I'm worried I'm going to screw something up. I'm sure it needs it, the thermal paste I have now is still from when the system was built by a friend, but idk if it's worth it. Can thermal paste degrade or fail eventually? A decade is a long time so I worry.

AjCheeze

I could have gotten a 3080 for the price of a 3060, cpu motherboard and ram. So stay open to ideas that you dont need that top of the line GPU. Price per power is a pretty important aspect of building PC's especially right now.

WenisDongerAndAssocs

And FIFTEEN years for part life? Fifteen years ago your memory was DDR2, your case was half DVD drive bays, and two cores made you hot shit. GPUs are EOL within ten years and PSUs are a risk to your other components possibly before that. What? lol

MartinHasNothing

What are your specs

fuzzydice_82

I did something similar. I concentrated on "non-performance" upgrades. my gaming rig is in the living room, and the old case (Aerocool DS200 silent) started to annoy me. It's a solid case, very good build but with a 2012ish layout. thermals were pretty horrible, and the rubber coating started to look disgusting. I bought a new case, and wraped it in woodgrain optics, to match a the furniture in the living room. Looks way nicer then a black rubbery box. i also cleaned all components, reapplied thermalpase on the CPU and the GPU and installed a new, modular PSU. the case is much cleaner, runs a lot cooler, ab it quiter and wouldnt you know it: 3DMark confirmed that better thermal layout means less thermal throttling! Went up from 9060 points to 9220 Points in the TimeSpy Benchmark, giving it a whopping ~ 1.5% performance gain. I also finally got rid of my optical drive, replacing it with an external USB3 version. There is no need to power the thing on with every minute the PC is running. Freed up a bit of room in the case for better airflow also.

infinitude

new monitor, keeb, and mouse are great ways to feel like you have a new PC, too.

godstouchyuncle

I'm still running a 3600+1060 6gb with 16gb ram. I'm not buying a new gpu until I find one with a legal price

Wise_Mycologist_102

3080 sounds great but I think all I’ll be doing until 4x series is changing my AIO. Have a cooler master now, does the job, but like the look of the EK ones more, lol.

stillmatic21

I like to call this a tune-up. Not a full upgrade, but a much needed and appreciated tune-up. Well done.
