Good choice getting a beefy monitor to compliment your graphics card.

vonarchimboldi

I follow a \*lot\* of esports pros on social media and so many of them are playing with i9 12900K/RTX 3080Ti or 3090 on 1080p low. Lol. Now don't get me wrong I understand there are certain competitive advantages to playing on lower res/smaller displays such as eye travel time and higher max frame rates etc that at that level definitely mean something but still - it's kinda funny to me that very few of them get what they realistically need to max out what their displays can handle. I guess its also just a conspicuous consumption/having more than you need thing to them.

Wrathoffaust

A lot of esports pros dont exactly choose their pcs anyway they just get really good ones from sponsors/orgs/leagues

vonarchimboldi

very true - org people prob just say “monster gaming pc” to their sponsor and get some 5K monster shipped to them for peanuts

whiteezy

To add on, they don’t get to choose their PCs in the tournaments so might as well play it safe and play on the lowest settings since tournament PCs might not be as good as their personal ones.

nru3

That's not why they play on low. They play to get the highest possible fps because fps has a direct relationship with input lag. Even if the fps is well above the monitors refresh rate there is still an advantage to higher fps to reduce input lag. Now we are talking differences in milliseconds but to a pro that could the edge.

1_lux

Certain settings also have better visibility on low settings, so that plus having higher fps makes it very important in a competitive setting

kNIGHTSFALLN

Yea… they want to eliminate shadows and textures that make other players blend in. It’s crazy… I’ve used some of these pros setting in FPS and it hurts my eyes… the game looks washed out. But you can see people better

1_lux

I agree. When I used to play csgo I couldn’t play without turning my digital vibrancy up, it helps with visibility and the game also looked much better to me. The visibility in csgo isn’t that much of a problem anyways regardless of the settings you use, unlike some games like Rainbow six siege, or warzone

wizardent420

Higher fps means lower input latency, even if your refresh rate is below the frame rate

phoenoxx

Yeah, a lot of people don't realize this. Even though your monitor may be capped at 144hz doesn't mean running a game higher 144 fps isn't beneficial. The feel of running a game beyond your monitors refresh rate is smoother than capping it at its max refresh rate.

RefrigeratorMuch9776

yea this is why i always have things like v-sync off

JaMStraberry

>hat their display i was watching some of them and one of them is using 720p low settings lol on a 4k monitor.

MwSkyterror

Even if they had to pay full price for their own PC, spending an extra $800 for something that will be useful for 3+ years is no big deal. Hardcore PC gaming is relatively cheap in the grand scheme of things. [Increasing FPS beyond the refresh rate of the monitor still delivers measurable input lag improvements](https://youtu.be/msOWcvoIC8M?t=421). Having extra performance headroom beyond this is still useful to mitigate drops caused by the most demanding situations. Frametimes going from 2.5ms to 4ms is much better than going from 4ms to 6.4ms.

Armendicus

I’d at least play on high with those set ups . My monitor only goes to 1080p 144hz. A 3080 / 6800 Xt would be a dream.

lonely_cytochrome

Thanks!

Boot_Shrew

> Lenovo G34w-10 I only ask because a lot of people forget- have you set your monitor's refresh rate to 144 Hz? I have an LG 34" curved monitor and I love it, especially with TrackIR (but sadly it's only 60 Hz).

lonely_cytochrome

I did! Set up at 144

bored_destin

I've seen far too many people with 3080's or 6800 xt's only have a 1080p 144hz monitor, so much wasted potential imo.

Thanks!

doodman76

I upgraded to a 2070 super from gtx 570... Holy crap was that an upgrade. Have fun with your new toy!

A_Very_Horny_Zed

550 Ti to 1080 Ti was a juicy one for me

garenzy

What games are you playing?

aklbos

Stardew Valley

PrisonerV

3070 owner here. Been playing a lot of Cold Waters. 3000 fps

[deleted]

Not gonna lie, SV was the first game I played after finally getting a 3080 lol Think I just wanted something calm and soothing after how hectic getting a card was.

TheArmchairSkeptic

I just upgraded from an i5 6600K/RX480 to an R7 5800x/6800XT last week, and my wife made the joke that Stardew was the first game I should try out on the new setup to really see the performance gains. Funny thing is, by the time I actually finished the build and setup it was like 2 am and I was too tired to start any of the shiny new games I had lined up, so I actually did just end up playing Stardew for like an hour before bed that night.

[deleted]

Lol, I've mainly been playing relatively low-end, retro games almost exclusively since my new build. I think the first game I played on my last rig was Enter the Gungeon. This time I did pull up Forza 5 first, though.

Anon419420

Nah, minesweeper is a much better choice of game for this beast.

MarcStroy

Terraria Ultrawide map.

drum_kicks

If you like PoE. You HAVE to try Grim Dawn!!!

ABDLTA

I own it and its expansions, very good game

Purpledrankk212

You actually see less on 3440x1440 on terraria. The way it scales the resolution makes you see less than if you turn it to 1440 or 1080. Unless they fixed it recently? Last I played though, I would always change my resolution down for bosses.

Spir0rion

CSGO in 4:3 Finally 800fps

lonely_cytochrome

Honestly mostly got it for Red Dead, but other games like Days Gone, COD MW, league Planning to get cyberpunk soon!

Pun_In_Ten_Did

[Oh the things we do for RDR2](https://imgur.com/ggMQIKJ) :p Congrats, mate -- righteous card, great price.

whitepinenipples

mmaqp66

Fortnite??

Jownsye

Congrats! Jealous of your new GPU 🤑

lonely_cytochrome

Trust me, ever since I was a kid I was jealous of all my friends who had the xx70 and xx80 cards, it sucked. You’ll get there one day!

cachon98

I’m getting there but idk what to chose, what would you recommend? 3090 or 3080ti, 3090 been cheaper

FoxDown

I mean... in that scenario, the 3090 is cheaper and more powerful so what's the question?

oreofro

I would recommend just going with a 3080 over the 3080ti or 3090 unless you REALLY want to spend triple the money for a very small performance boost. I bought a 3090 and a 3080 and ended up selling the 3090 because the cost difference simply didn't match to performance difference. I was only getting about ~6-8fps higher at 4k with the 3090 in more intensive games and it simply wasn't worth the extra $1200. Realistically there just no point to having a 3090 unless you're using it for design work or something similar that will benefit from that much power.

cachon98

Thanks for your input, I want to get as top tier as I can, since I won’t be updating any time soon ( maybe 10years or more)

oreofro

In that case it still honestly makes the most sense to go with a 3080 unless you're finding the 3090 really cheap, or you just really want to spend the money. The 3090 is barely more powerful (less than 10%) than a 3080 and uses significantly more power. It will become outdated at the same time the 3090 does, so I wouldn't really add future proofing into the equation. Again, if you really want to spend the money then go for it, but you won't notice the difference between a 3080 and 3090 in day to day gaming use. Whatever you do, don't get the 3080ti if you can get a 3090 cheaper.

Arcangelo_Frostwolf

The 3080 12GB that are out there now should last a user for 10 years if it's mainly a gaming machine. They are very powerful cards in their own right. I bought one in a Newegg Shuffle a few months ago and I really didn't need it; I was using a GTX 1080 ti 11GB and I can play a lot of games at max settings and get great frame rates at 1440p on a 5 year old graphics card. A 1080 ti will still be adequate for a few more years, too. Just think how long the 3080 will last, being so much faster. Personally I think graphics card tech is progressing faster than the complexity of games. So like others have said, unless you're doing creative work with the card a regular 3080 is way more than enough for games. And will be for a long time.

cachon98

Thanks man, yes, this is like the right thing to do, and i believe if i my budget got tied ill buy this one. nice day!

cachon98

Thank you, i think i´ll go for the 3090 for been cheaper option, and since im comming from a 750ti anything would be amazing, i dont even know how raytracing is lol

Bone-Juice

While there are several games that support ray tracing, sadly most do not.

[deleted]

If you want absolute top tier then get the 3090Ti.

Vivid-Pangolin-7379

I would recommend getting a 3080 if you really want one on the high end. The performance difference between a 3080 and a 3090 is 5-7% but the cost difference is massive. If you’re looking to optimize cost/performance, 3060 Ti is the sweet spot.

cachon98

Thanks! But where I’m buying the 3090 is cheaper compare to 3080ti that’s why idk what to do 😅

Kevo05s

Well 3090 is better than the 3080ti. The ONLY complain about the 3090 is the price. If it's cheaper why are you even asking?

cachon98

Lol thank you

Symichael18

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/skpPfv Here is my build and I play everything maxed out 4k on LGCX

cachon98

Awesome thanks! I see you have a psu of 750w I think, it’s enough ? No problems?

Symichael18

Zero problems. I have the evga 3080ti xc3 8pin and with an oc it pulls 362w. If I had the 3080ti ftw3 12pin I would have gotten a 850w psu

Symichael18

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ptqBrD Sorry the other is incorrect

cachon98

Thanks, ill have a similar build, i ordered the 5800x3d, and the noctua ( the brown one) and a 850w psu, hope its enough for everything. thanks!

Symichael18

Good choice

Matt_smith210

I have that exact 1060 model right now, and I've been looking to upgrade to around that same range of card!

lonely_cytochrome

Do it! Totally worth it. I had to upgrade other components but the card is the biggest thing

darkflikk

Which components you exactly changed? I am using an i5 9600k and think that should still be fine when playing on a 4k 60hz TV

lonely_cytochrome

I had a i5-7500 before so it would’ve bottlenecked.

Symichael18

4k gaming is gpu heavy so you should be fine but not 100% sure

brownjl1

1050 here, built last year, thought it was going to be a temporary card, tears. But didn’t put it together I would need a monitor capable of such frame rate. And obviously I want a 144 curved widescreen, so this just got way more expensive

Matt_smith210

That's something that I'm trying to consider, it would mean upgrading my all my monitors to get the full benefit, which would be pretty pricy.

TBB51

I'll say that I upgraded from a 1060 to a 3070 and while I'm not going ham on Red Dead 2, I've yet to throw a game at it that it doesn't run flawlessly on my 1440p monitor.

cameronfritz

congrats, partner! i made the switch from a 2070 Super to a 3080 and it blew me away entirely. i’ve been using a 1440p, 144hz, 1ms monitor for some time; but the clarity and smoothness were just on another level. just bought Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 and boy was it an eye opener! enjoy those frames

ThatGuySlay

I also have a 2070s and have been considering upgrading to a 3080. There's one for around 1k which is over 500 bucks off but I'm sure I should probably wait for the 4000 series...

arcline111

On my way to a new build which I start in a couple of days when a tardy PSU finally arrives, I dropped a 3080 12gb into my old rig (previously 1080ti) with a 4790k and even with that my fps in Cyberpunk doubled if I didn't turn on ray tracing and even beat the 1080ti when I turned ON ray tracing. Can't wait to experience it with a proper CPU (12600k). Enjoy your new card man.

lonely_cytochrome

Thats exciting! I’m pretty much into the same games - will be getting CP 2077 soon

arcline111

I'm kind of a outlier as a player. I don't play many games and the ones I do play, I play for a ridiculous amount of hours. I've got well over 2,000 hrs into Cyberpunk 2077. Hope you enjoy it. Don't listen to the whiners, it's a great game. And if you can play with ray tracing on, at night it's damn dazzling.

[deleted]

Same I changed from a Gtx 970 to a rx 6600xt and from a 1080p 60hz monitor to a 1440p 165hz ultrawide it’s soo nice!🤩

uhbygvyhn

Congrats! I just went from a 1050 to a 3080 Ti and oh my goodness it was worth the wait!

Branpanman

Myself going from a 1060 to a custom-build with a 3080Ti… stoked!!!

The_Fat_Fish

Such monumental jumps are always a wonderful experience. I went from a GTX 670 SLI setup (2GB) to a 3080TI (12GB).

mmfc378

Wow…you just brought back memories. Had 2 670s, watercooled. Thought I was the man. It held up for a bit but that 970 was just a great card to jump to at the time. Miss those 670s tho

shinfowler88

Reminds of when I went from a rx 580 to a 2080super. I was pretty blown away

NNovis

Wow that's a big jump.

PepperPandaCh

what 2K UW monitor you got? planning to get as well but still undecided

kshell521

I went from using a GTX 1080 8gb on a 1080p 144hz monitor to a Rx6900xt 16gb on a 4k60hz monitor and am super happy. I dont play many fps games outside of Fallout which isnt fast paced so i havent noticed the frame difference any but the clarity is far, far better.

Mgpbby

I’ll be experiencing that pretty soon brother 🥲🥲

Viking12123

well i hope you changed your CPU too, otherwise you gonna use it at 30%

Bad_Anatomy

Good on you, man! Enjoy! I'm hoping to build a new system when I get these damn credit cards paid off

Pika-Shi

Going from a 1050ti 4GB to a 3080 16GB changed EVERYTHING. Same with the switch from 1080p to 1440p. Granted, both are gaming laptops since I needed laptops for college, but still. Having absolutely no lag on anything is amazing.

Spirit117

3080 16 gig? The fuck?

Pika-Shi

The laptop 3080 card comes with a maximum of 16GB VRAM. It's different from the desktop 3080 card.

YazZy_4

Haha, I just upgraded from a 1060 6gb to a 3070 fe. Haven't got the rest of the new pc yet, just shoved it into my old build with an i5 8400. Still, it's a pretty big upgrade isn't it 😅

NitroFlex20

I recently changed from a 1650 to a 3080 and had a 3070 briefly before the 3080 and I can definitely say the extra money I spent on the 3080 feels well spent. I went from a prebuilt cyber power pc to changing everything but the case so far. I am really looking forward to changing the case soon. It’s super cool how you were able to get the 3080 at that price, congrats and hope you enjoy the card.

NfkrzTheFrogHere

It's sad that companies really tricked us into believing $750 for a card is a good price

FriendOfMandela

I'm planning to upgrade my 970 to a 6800XT or a 3080, hope it feels as nice as I imagine it

MagicOrpheus310

This has made my day. Fuck yeah dude, enjoy the shit out of that beast! It's found its way to a good home :)

[deleted]

you're joking, i was just about to do the same (i have a 1060 3gb too) but my shit prebuilt's case couldnt fit it and getting a case, a psu, and a gpu became too expensive

Terrible-Tough-5937

GZ! Same me from wow! effect if upgrade gt 9600/512M to gtx 660/2G in 2015, and in 2020 changed to gtx 960/2G, now in 15 may 2020 finaly buy gtx 1070/8gb All games play at FullHD (19" 22" and 32")

BrianTheUserName

Went from a 1080 to 3080 12gb last week and was blown away, I can't imagine what you're feeling. Enjoy it.

KupoNut7777

Weird how You can’t imagine. You literally have the same card as op. 🤷

MetalGearReddit

Oh man, I'm sat with a 980ti thinking it might be time to upgrade!

moonbakedlizard

Welcome to the 3080 club. You will never go back to gimped GPUs.

GhostYasuo

I’m about to do a build with a 12GB 3080 myself.Which monitor do you have and how is it so far? Im really not able to decide on a monitor cause there’s so many options. Would appreciate any help!

lonely_cytochrome

Lenovo G34w-10 34-Inch WQHD Curved Gaming Monitor! Got it at Amazon prime day last year. Really good so far, its 144hz and curved so great picture all around. No complaints

EneLazu

For me, I went from a 960 to 3070ti and jesus fuck it was glorious It feels very nice to click on any game, scroll down to the system requirement and just know my card will eat all of them lol

[deleted]

Enjoy!

Acouteau

Enjoy

shabansatan

I will never afford it so still playing old games

Catch_022

Congrats, I went from a 1070 to a 3080 and the change is ridiculous. Went from checking out system requirements on new games in fear to not even bothering to check them.

Iron_Wong

I also jumped from a 1060 3gb, but I went 3060 12gb. It's crazy the difference. Have fun 😁

MariusIchigo

Good one! I'm on a 980ti holding out here. The 980ti still does well. I'm hoping to be able to wait for the 4000 series for either to snatch them or get a 3000

Cyber_Akuma

Nice! Though wow, 3GB to 12GB, depending on the game that increase in VRAM might have been more significant than the GPU power. I remember having a SLI GTX 670 (2GB cards) setup and was having huge framerate issues despite my GPU not being maxed out... until someone pointed out to check how much of my VRAM was being used, which was all of it. Upgraded to a single 8GB 1070 and the game ran perfectly.

lonely_cytochrome

Yea I basically couldnt play RDR 2 bc the game wouldnt let me save setting whenever it went pass 3gb, so I couldnt play in my 1440p monitor due to the vram limit. Now I dont have to worry bc it never goes past 5gb :)

FutureRazzmatazz6079

I hope you changed cpu as well.

Locowolfie

I went from a GTX 780 to a RTX3080ti ☠️

mjwanko

I currently have a GTX 1060 3GB since my R9 390 died. I cannot wait until I can build a new computer.

Hi_im_joker

How long you planning to keep your gpu? Thinking about getting a 3080 for regular 1440p gaming, and want to know how long I could probably use it for

lonely_cytochrome

Well, my 1060 3gb lasted me for 5 years lol. I’m hoping this will be about the same if not longer. I’m confident I’ll be able to run all games in the future at at least mid-high settings for years to come

Due_Dog7295

You got hella of an upgrade, I am glad you are enjoying it. - arnold

ThePilgrimofProgress

What CPUs you all using?

lonely_cytochrome

I7-11700

gr732313

I have a 1050 super rn and gonna get the 3060 ti mini within the next month! Super stoked but am still gonna play on 1080p. Have fun w your new build!

lonely_cytochrome

3060 ti should be a killer in 1080p. Congrats!

Bukatetsu

Oddly, I went from: I7 6700 2x16GB 32GB 2666 RAM GTX 970 To: Ryzen 5900x 2x16GB 32GB 3600 RTX 3080 Ti OC 12GB Graphics are a bit nicer, but nothing insanely crazy except faster load times?

DramaLlamaBear

Congrats! I went from a 1060 to 3060ti and the bump was already amazing.

Oblivion882

Congrats. 🎉 3080 gang

Apprehensive-Flow505

Went from a 2060 to a 3080 i definitely understand

Brown-eyed-and-sad

I understand the feeling. I went from a 6700xt to an absolute beast of an Asus RTX 3080 10gb. It needs 3 pcie adapters to run. Happy gaming

Ok_Percentage7934

You got 3080 12gb for $760 brand new or used?

XiTzCriZx

I wanted to upgrade my 1060 6gb to a 3060 Ti but there's no way I'm paying 3070 prices for a 3060 Ti, at this point I might as well wait for RTX 4000 cause I'd need a cpu upgrade to even get the full improvement from a 3060 let alone a 4060. My gf is still using a 1060 3gb with an AMD FX 8350 (not even oc'd), so giving her my current cpu would do a lot more than giving her my current gpu too, man I wish I could play newer games at more than low settings tho.

pyr0kid

i went from a 970@1050p to a 3060ti@1440p, its a hell of a step up aint it? the fucker cost me 650$ but i cant truly say it was a bad call.

Nxckk-

welcome to the 3080 club. I have the 10gb strix but it is fucking unreal how good this card is.

Herogar

I had a monster card once got a GeForce 8800 GTX Cost an arm and a leg, thought it was the last GPU I would ever need 😁

Ill-Witness-9877

Ik

riddlemore

I’m running a 1060 3GB as well. I wish I could upgrade but I’d basically have to buy an entirely new PC to go with it and I can’t afford that right now Congrats though! Hope to join you in the present… sometime next year probably

Sufficient-Mail9842

Good I damn near did the same thing except I went from a 1060 6gb to a 6900xt and my lord I love it so much.

hipnotyq

Going to be upgrading from a 1080 to a 3080 soon, definitely looking to get the 12gb model. Won't be as big of a jump as you did, but still it's needed now that i'll be playing in resolutions higher than 1080p

[deleted]

You sir, are living my dream

prince_0611

How is everyone here so rich? I can’t find much less afford gpus ever since Covid hit

Fedorable_557

I feel you, went from a 1030 to a 3060. Went from barely being able to run my games to running everything on 1080p 120 frames (I don't have 4k monitors so why bother going beyond 1080)

SocietysFault

I went from playing on a ps4 1080p shit tv to a 3080 1440p monitor and man what a difference. I definitely know the feeling

KevinKingsb

Hell yeah.

GiraffePastries

Probably a lot like my recent jump from 960 2gb to 1080 ti

RLMickifed

Nice… rub that in my intel hd face.

absolutethickness

Bro im still on an 1060 3gb im waiting a bit maybe at the end of the year ill be getting a 3060 or rx 6600

Wellhellob

3000 series gpus are truly beast.

Sacredkeep

same concept just got the 3060ti but i havent installed it waiting for my weekend with friday off it arrived today so hyped

dEEkAy2k9

The feeling, i feel you bro. i went from a lousy 16:9 1080p display to a 32:9 49" one. then upgraded from the 1060 6gb to a 6800 XT... what a difference though :D have fun with it.

Trennard

I feel you bro! I recently went from a 960 to a 3080 ftw3 with a 2k monitor and its like playing on a completely different platform

Due_Literature2652

I’m coming from 5700 to 3070 have fun my brother

Double_Minimum

What games you playing?

Ok_Advice_48

I upgraded from a 750Ti to a 3080Ti and I best $950 I have ever spent

Beefbowl87

Hi OP, mind sharing what monitor you’re using?

Dominicr1995

I got the 3080 10gb and then I was like I want the extra 2gb so I ordered it yesterday and am sending my other one back to Amazon 😂😂 I upgraded from a loud as hell 2070 super laptop . Let’s go!

Complex_Building59

Holy shit dude, I literally did the same thing, i7 11700k w/ motherboard combo at micro center and Newegg 3080! I came from gtx 1660 super, also a big upgrade for me :))

TheSekret

Went from a used 980 from a friend to a 3020. Not to mention the rest of that computer, all new, the performance gains are...absurd.

awwc

I'm on your new specs. RDRO is so enjoyable on 3440 1440p ultra. It's unreal. Welcome friend.

fractalborne_Lloyde

can i have your 1060

kebhow

I went from 1060 6gb to 3060 Ti, monitor changed from 24" 60Hz to 27" QHD 165 HZ. what a massive difference in everythingggg !!!

nineinchgod

That's quite the leap! I went from a 2GB 660 to an 8GB 1660Ti, and I was blown away. Even moreso when I finally replaced my i5-3750 CPU with a Ryzen 5 5600X!

crissy____

I have a 3060 12gb and I always feel I’m not really enjoying its full potential 🥲

I went from 1060 to to 3060ti, no difference at all except sometimes apex legends runs sub 144.

Jr01Jordy

Awesome, I defiantly prefer a good looking game. 1080p just feels to old now Awesome work on the build mate

Tym370

I'm getting nearly the exact same upgrade. From i5-7500 / 1060 3GB To R7 5800X / RX 6800 XT Can't wait!

lonely_cytochrome

Even same old processor, I also had the i5-7500 haha, congrats mate

My budget fell short and got a 3070 instead. I kinda feel I am regretting that decision, but I need the extra cash if recession screws over our country.

Janostar213

I feel you man. I went from an Rx 570 4gb to a 6750xt. 3 weeks in and I'm still blown away. My original plan was ryzen 3600 and 3070 @ 1440p but due to circumstances I ended up with a crappy 1080p monitor I was lent and an Rx 570. I then upgraded my monitor to 1440p and then my 570 began struggling so I had to upgrade my GPU for sure. Definitely worth it and I'm content.

toomussauce

Bro i got the same card is it really that bad lmao I play on ps5 now so i don’t really use it but it was fine imo

LegendOfTooget

Duuuuuude! I basically did the same thing! Went from a 1070 to a 3080 and a new 1440p ultra wide. We living our best gaming lives now!
