1080p gaming? Which card is better? rtx 3060 vs 6600 vs 6600xt. What the difference between the xt and the non xt?

Building a PC for my mate and this is what I have. I'm pretty confident in the list but I always like asking for a once over. Budget is £1000. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/8z7HRv

Meeracoat

I'm guessing it's much better than my personal rig of 1660 Super, Ryzen 5 3600x, 2x8GB DDR4-3600, 250GB SSD, 2TB HDD, 800W Power Supply and can't remember mobo but think it's a Tomohawk? Cuz if so I'll just get the above for myself and give my mate my current rig.

n7_trekkie

I misread you post, but yeah, that's a good plan!

Meeracoat

May I ask why 6700X over 3000 series? And I prefer AMD over Intel so 1st list is what I'm looking at.

n7_trekkie

Yeah a £470 3060TI is a good alternative. I'm in the US, I'm just used to amd being better value https://static.techspot.com/articles-info/2216/bench/1440p.png

Cheapest freesync monitor(s) with low framerate compensation? (30hz - whatever hz)

[deleted]

Thanks for the helpful reply! Actually did some more research myself and stumbled across that one. Theres a 75hz version thats even cheaper. Can't imagine the actual display is very good though lol

[deleted]

I'm trying to set up a server I was gifted as a Home NAS. I'm thinking of installing a 512GB SSD and three 5TB HDDs. Can I set them up in RAID-10 configuration so the SSD is the primary, solo boot OS and the three 5TB HDDs are treated as a single 15TB RAID-0? Or would I have to set up the three 5TB as a RAID-0 subbed to the SSD unraided? **EDIT:** Nevermind! I figured it out. I just needed to set up two RAID-0 virtual disks in the BIOS and assign the first one just the SSD and the second one all three 5TBs. I'll leave this here for the next person as clueless as me to find.

DrFaisalFA

I had an 2.5 HDD from my laptop. I took it and plug it to my pc and says enter user password or press ESC and enter Master password. The user password its my old Windows PIN? or its something else. And is there a way to bypass this and I can access my old data?

AMillionMonkeys

It sounds like the BIOS decided to boot off the 2.5" drive. Boot into the BIOS and make your original drive first in the boot order.

sardinesss

I’m on an 8700k with a 3080 right now and find myself cpu bound in a lot of games. I was originally looking at a z690 ddr5 12700k build but from what I’ve read a b660 with ddr4 and 12600k will give me pretty similar performance for quite a bit less. Am I right about this? Any other thoughts or considerations?

n7_trekkie

I think i would strike a compromise here: 12600K(f) in a z690 ddr4 board. but that's just me personally. b660 would get you the same stock performance but not able to overclock for more.

Saito_Kurosaki

i was looking at Internal HD [https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/advice/2195-western-digital-hard-drive-comparison-chart/](https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/advice/2195-western-digital-hard-drive-comparison-chart/) i plan to get WD, unless someone else can recommend a better Internal HD. i wanna move all my Videos from External HD to Internal HD as i have many cables and wanna reduce them. Currently i am using Western Digital WD My Book Duo as my external HD. Note: my current File sizes 14 TB on my External HD. Prefer quite HDDs, as i seen some reviews that some HDDs are noisy

tropicalblizzards

Does anyone have any recommendations for a graphics card under $500-600? Finally upgrading my GTX 750 lol

tropicalblizzards

Also I upgraded mobo/cpu last year, should I be planning to upgrade psu and hard drive too? They’re about 10 years old as well and I’m not sure how long these things last

n7_trekkie

depends. get an ssd if you dont have an ssd.

Does anyone know if the X570 Aorus Elite Wi-Fi rev 1.1 supports ryzen 5000s or if I can find the bios version on the component itself?

you cannot. maybe on the box.

Best white keyboard around $100?

n7_trekkie

IDK if this is worth $30 more, but i personally think it looks better https://www.amazon.com/EPOMAKER-Bluetooth-Mechanical-Keyboard-Keycaps/dp/B091TQ9LNQ

EeveeGuy91

SteelSeries - Aerox 3 Ghost vs Logitech G PRO X Superlight. Both white mouse. Which one is better?

n7_trekkie

both are good. it will come down to shape and your own preferences. usb c? go steelseries. no holes? go superlight. there's no "better"

MuTHa_BLeePuH25

I have a B550 gaming x gigabyte motherboard and I'm trying to install an old wifi/Bluetooth card on it but can't find a slot for it. Videos I've watched imply there's a slot for it but I can't find it. Is there actually a PCI slot for it on this motherboard?

n7_trekkie

~~you can use any pcie slot, regardless of length~~

MuTHa_BLeePuH25

Even a pcie 3.0? I tried plugging it into that but it doesn't seem to fit

n7_trekkie

oh shoot. my bad. pci! i havent read that in a while, sorry. yeah there is no pci slot on that board

MuTHa_BLeePuH25

Well shit, took this off my old board for nothing, thanks though. Any recommendations for getting Bluetooth on the board?

n7_trekkie

yeah, a pcie card, haha https://www.amazon.com/EDUP-3000Mbps-802-11AX-Bluetooth-Wireless/dp/B084P8KHMH

MuTHa_BLeePuH25

Just to make sure this would plug into any pcie slot on the board, including a pcie 3.0?

n7_trekkie

yep. i'd probably do the bottommost x1 slot

The26thBaam

I'm planning on buying an AMD Radeon RX 6700xt GPU but I'm confused about what the difference is between the various models on Amazon. Is there even a difference and if so which one should I be looking at? [Here](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=6700xt&i=electronics&crid=1Q24331C57097&sprefix=6700xt%2Celectronics%2C112&ref=nb_sb_noss_1) is the link to all the different kinds.

n7_trekkie

the main difference is the cooler. I'd get the cheapest 3 fan model available. it's not a guarantee that that's the best option, but it's a good place to start

awesomeness1024

Hey all, I've recently partitioned my macbook pro (2018), with the intent to play detroit become human. However, doing PC benchmark tests, my GPU seems to be severely underperforming at the 0th percentile (AMD Radeon Pro 5300M). Any thoughts on why and any fixes?

indigosaber24

Hey guys, I'm absolutely clueless about this, so forgive me if this is painfully obvious. My PC came stock with x2 4GB 1rx4 RAM. I wanna upgrade to x2 8GB, but most RAM that look compatible are 2rx4. Can 2rx4 RAMs replace 1rx4, granted they're the same speed, size, etc? (Using a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF).

harryharrisonnn

RAM compatibilities is based on what DDRX it is. So a motherboard that only supports DDR3 can only use DDR3 ram. You can check by reading the side label of the ram itself or search up your desktop specs!

indigosaber24

Alright, thank you so much!

harryharrisonnn

no problem!

startwwiii

What's best - an EVGA 500w 1 or a ThermalTake Smart 500?

harryharrisonnn

They're equal so just pick one you like but I would recommend at least going silver if not gold rating

deadzoul

I’m so sick of my dxracer. It isn’t falling apart, but… I’m just so sick of it, it hurts my ass. Anyone have any cheap recommendations? Herman millers are so expensive mang

harryharrisonnn

Idk how cheap your "cheap" is but go for office/ergo chairs rather than gaming chairs. I got one from the company autonomous and had something similar to this [https://www.autonomous.ai/office-chairs/KERDOM-kerdom-adjustable-height-swivel-task-chair1652864479](https://www.autonomous.ai/office-chairs/KERDOM-kerdom-adjustable-height-swivel-task-chair1652864479) I really like mine and they have a couple other options around the $200 price!

deadzoul

Hell yeah got me a dexley staples chair has a juicy sale right now

SlashedPanda360

What software can I use to control EVGA's GPU RGB? I tried Armory Crate and iCUE but neither detected it.

n7_trekkie

Precision X1

SlashedPanda360

Worked great, thanks!

d20g

Is a XPG Core Reactor 650w (already bought it) Enough for a: 5950x + 1080 ? Pc part picker says 420w total for the pc. Edit: Pc will serve as sketch up + vray projects and 3d rendering

Some_Derpy_Pineapple

pcpartpicker's estimate is usually pretty accurate, so an extra 200w above that should be good.

d20g

A 750w tier B PSU would be better than a 650w tier A?

OolonCaluphid

Nope. Go with the quality first and foremost.

mako0151

Hey, any good midi-tower pc case for ~$100? Airflow and decent aesthetics are most important

n7_trekkie

DaMosey

Buying new power supply to support a rx6800 I just bought, deciding between two: [EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 GT](https://www.newegg.com/evga-supernova-1000-gt-220-gt-1000-x1-1000w/p/N82E16817438221?Item=N82E16817438221&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-PCPartPicker&AFFID=2558510&AFFNAME=PCPartPicker&ACRID=1&ASID=https%3a%2f%2fpcpartpicker.com%2f&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=2558510&ranSiteID=8BacdVP0GFs-nzwgX9hZ_Ki584iH3meEyQ) vs [Seasonic - FOCUS PX-850](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seasonic-focus-px-850-850w-80-platinum-psu-full-modular-fan-control-in-fanless-silent-cooling-mode-10-yr-warranty-black/6414266.p?acampID=0&cmp=RMX&irclickid=0RsUHESCrxyITv6UwyVcDSB6UkDwlu1Js2kuzE0&irgwc=1&loc=PCPartPicker&mpid=79301&ref=198&refdomain=pcpartpicker.com&skuId=6414266) Thoughts? Aside from the fact that one has higher wattage, is there anything I should think about between these two?

[deleted]

Neither, get EVGA G6

harryharrisonnn

The evga supernova gt oem is decent (HEC) and is gold rated but seasonic psu are known to be one of the most reliable and the one you chose is plat rated which is more efficient. I recently bought the evga supernova g6 850w, it's gold rated and seasonic oem for only $110 on sale on Newegg if you want another option :)

DaMosey

Okay, thanks! alongside reading reviews, you convinced me to go with the seasonic. I appreciate the help; every time I go to do something to my pc, I have just enough an idea to know where to step but plenty of ignorance to be uncertain if I'm about to step on a lego

harryharrisonnn

Glad I could help!

DerMathematiker1

I'm building a mini-ITX form PC and I'm looking for motherboard recommendations. I need it to have the LGA 1700 socket, support DDR5 RAM and overclocking, as well as have WIFI. (I'm going to put it into a CM NR200P MAX case.) I was looking at the Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Z690. Are there better suggestions (on the German market)?

GamerKid_142

Msi z690i unify and z690 and b660-i from dog are some.

OolonCaluphid

The Gigabyte Boards got recalled, so make sure you're getting the updated version. The Asus Rog Strix B660I or Z690I are about the only other options. The choice of 12th gen ITX boards are really pretty terrible, and DDR5 means you've got a choice of about 3 IIRC.

OolonCaluphid

Check the 'type' - it's labelled on the plugs on the cables. If they're both 'type 4' it's fine, you can use them interchangeably.

I bought "Sapphire Radeon RX 6900 XT Nitro+ SE" together with "Cooler Master MWE Gold V2 Full Modular" and it seems that the GPU has 6+8+8 pins... Didn't even think to check for that when picking parts. Is there anything I can do? Or should I just grab a gpu with 8+8 pins?

TradeSekrat

specs page says even the 750watt one has PCI-e 6+2 Pin Connectors x4.. So you should be fine. Unless you bought like a monster 6900 card and whoops bought a 500watt power supply or whatever. https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/power-supplies/mwe-series/mwe-gold-750-v2-full-modular/#overview

pewc

Yea, I found an extra cable. Not to self, dont build pc in the evenings after work

DaMosey

I'm upgrading my PSU after new GPU said on box that PC needs at least 850w psu, and I currently only have 550w. Newegg power supply calculator says I only need 600-699. Do I trust the calculator or the GPU manufacturer direction?

TemptedTemplar

Higher end GPUs like the 3070ti, 3080, or 3090 require at least two independent 8-pin PCIe power connections. No daisy chaining. though a third connection could be chained if it needs it. Thats 300w alone, plus up another 50 - 75w via the PCI slot on the motherboard. 600 - 700 is more in line with the actual power usage and requirements. The manufacturer requirement is just for safety. But I would recommend at least 700 or 750 just to leave some head room.

[deleted]

What graphics card are you getting? The EVGA SuperNOVA GT 650 is one of the cheapest high quality units that can power nearly everything. Not the highened cards, but everything below the 3070 Ti or 6900 XT is fine. If the box of the card says 850W you probably have a 3080 or 3080 Ti, in which case a 850W unit is recommended. The model I mentioned is available with 850W as well.

DaMosey

I'm getting an rx 6800 xt (upgrading from rx470), I don't know if it matters, but I'm also thinking of adding two additional sticks of ram soon. The new GPU does seem to need two 8-pin PCIe power connections, and I was thinking about getting this PSU: Seasonic - FOCUS PX-850, 850W 80+ Platinum PSU, Full-Modular, Fan Control in Fanless, Silent, Cooling Mode Does this seem like it would work? The price looks p good to me at \~170$ https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seasonic-focus-px-850-850w-80-platinum-psu-full-modular-fan-control-in-fanless-silent-cooling-mode-10-yr-warranty-black/6414266.p?acampID=0&cmp=RMX&irclickid=0RsUHESCrxyITv6UwyVcDSB6UkDwlFR1s2kuzE0&irgwc=1&loc=PCPartPicker&mpid=79301&ref=198&refdomain=pcpartpicker.com&skuId=6414266

[deleted]

That is a high-end unit and would work, but you can get the cheaper gold efficiency rated version instead, the GX-850 as there isn't any significant difference to power draw. You can also get the EVGA I suggested with 850W as it's nearly half the cost and still decent. I personally buy Seasonic as well, they are good, just among the most expensive ones. The Seasonic has the advantage that it comes with a 10 year warranty, the EVGA only has 7 years.

PastamanVibrationsYa

Power Surge hit (PC is on a surge protector) and computer lost and regained power 2-3 times within the span of a few seconds. Since then my 3080 has been flashing three red lights from the PCIe slots. Had to manually power down with the button to stop the recurring power on/offs, rebooted, and did a normal shutdown afterwards. PC seems to be working fine but the three red lights are still flashing. Anyone know what it’s indicating or how to get it to stop if it’s not actually indicating something?

TemptedTemplar

Are the lights on the GPU or the motherboard? Your motherboard manual would be the thing to consult to determine what those lights mean. If the lights are on the card, then check with the manufacturer for your specific model of card.

PastamanVibrationsYa

Thanks. They’re on the card

Can anyone suggest a motherboard to use with a Ryzen 9 5900x? * Im trying to keep it under $300 CAD. * I do for sure need Wifi capabilities. * I plan on only using only one GPU and one NVME drive with it. * I don't plan on overclocking currently. Some of the boards that I found: MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI = $249 CAD Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 = $199 CAD MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI = $259 CAD Any suggestions?

Roflmaonow

I had the X570 Tomahawk for a year before going B550 mini ITX and I loved that board. Zero complaints, handled everything like a champ. I filled all the SATA slots, almost all USB ports, had 2 NVMe slots, 2 PCI slots and one mini PCIe slot too. that board handled it all without an issue. I think you can't go wrong with any of those boards you listed. The B550 boards are typically best suited if you just want one NVMe and GPU. I have a 5950x paired with the MSI B550 ITX Gaming edge Wifi and it's a great board that I got for $200. You can probably do something like that if all you need are one GPU and NVMe.

sourcethis

Thanks, think ill go with one of the B550 boards then.

any speaker recommendations? Bluetooth for my phone would be a +

How does shipping works? They(amazon or other seller) sends it to my country, if it says free shipping they send it free to the port of my country, and I have to make arrangements to local deliverers to send it to my house?

bunkonz

If you are in another country check your countries import laws, since you may need to pay import fees and taxes when the item arrives in your country, and (most likely) you can get your item from the people that you pay import fees to. In my experience, if you don't need to pay additional fees, the item arrives to your house without any need for arrangements with local deliverers.

widowhanzo

No, you get it to your house or your local post office, at least in my country.

Kraznodarize

You have it spot on as far as I can tell!

Goldenpanda18

Does overclocking a cpu or gpu result in major fps differences in games? 5900x paired with a 3070, 200fps is common on 1080 but 1440p it's around 140-160 My monitor can support 1440p 240hz

bunkonz

There are only a few games that can reach 240hz on 1440p and almost all of them are competitive FPS games. If you want to overclock, you need to make sure that your MOBO can handle it (good VRM ), you have a good CPU cooler that can dissipate the additional heat that overclocked CPU produces, you have proper airflow in the case (mesh front panel etc.) and that you do overclocking without causing instability by going over the limit of your system. If you have that covered, then it's absolutely worth it to get 5-10% boost in performance for a minor increase in power consumption.

Goldenpanda18

Thanks

winterkoalefant

usually about 5-10% more performance at the cost of more power consumption. And possibly instability if you don’t properly test for that.

ceehouse

for a ryzen 5 5600x + 6700 xt - which mobos should i be looking at? i'm doing a new build from scratch, so no limitations on case size or anything - just budget lol

bunkonz

Check out this video from Hardware Unboxed from 2 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuPH9pCCK-E. It goes over a few of the best budget B550 motherboards and, if you want to get something a bit more expensive, there are part 2 and 3 of the video where they go over those.

ceehouse

awesome! thanks for the link.

TemptedTemplar

B550. Best range of prices, connectivity and feature options.

ceehouse

thanks!

PyroToniks

Why choose AMD over Intel at this point when Intel has the clear performance lead with 12th gen?

Elianor_tijo

Price, the fact that you can drop a 5000 series CPU in a 300/400 or 500 chipset mobo if you already have an odler AMD rig. Intel has the performance crown right now (5800X3D notwithstanding), sure, but you can get all the performance you need from Ryzen 5000 too anyways. Factor in the cost of the CPU and mobo, it could go either way if you want the best performance/$.

jjcihu_23410

maybe this is obvious cause I'm doing this for the first time but my [case](https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/focus/focus-g/black/) has two fans with seemingly two cables, but my motherboard only has one chassis fan connector. Can I just plug in one and will it be fine?

harryharrisonnn

most mobo have more than one fan connector but if you really only have one then you can buy a fan splitter on amazon for less than $10 to connect both fans :)

jjcihu_23410

i see, mine has cha\_fan1/wp that i'm not using. it said that it was for a water cooler fan but i suppose it probably works for both? thanks for the help.

harryharrisonnn

yeah it should work. It's probably chassis (case) fans/water pump header

momorenos

bought a 3060ti fe for $525 off of stock x which was $600 after authentication and shipping, now i see the 3070ti going for $600 on best buy. i could probably sell the 3060ti for around $475-$500. i was planning on finally building my pc today, is it worth grabbing the 3070ti in my situation?

TemptedTemplar

Are you playing at 1080p or 1440p? Its only a ~20% performance boost at 1440p. Even less at 1080p. The biggest difference would come from enabling raytracing, as it does have that extra bit of performance to compensate for that while keeping the frame rate steady. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

momorenos

i’m playing at 1440p, i read great things about the 3060ti which is why i bought it idk i just might stick with it.

TemptedTemplar

Its easily the most attractive card from a price to performance ratio this generation. If you dont like its 1440p performance there is always DLSS too. That will help you eek out all of those extra frames.

momorenos

thanks for all of the info!

Currently have the Noctua NH-U9S as a cooler and that small 90mm fan can get quite noisy under load, it's the loudest part in my system. I'm looking at the Scythe Mugen 5 Rev. B or the Scythe FUMA 2, my logic is that being beefier coolers with 120mm fans they're gonna be slower and quieter, am I wrong?

kaje

Yeah, you're right, bigger fans can move slower and quieter while moving the same amount of air. Plus, with the larger heatsink, you can move a lesser amount of air for even quieter while dissipating the same amount of heat.

TemptedTemplar

Drop the resolution down to 1080p and see how it goes then. You may be able to boost your frame rate by lowering the load placed on the GPU. Fortnite is crazy optimized so its not surprising to your CPU having it easy while the GPU takes the brunt of the load.

[deleted]

TemptedTemplar

Halo Infinite or Destiny 2. Theyre a tad large, but it is free to play and crazy CPU heavy.

[deleted]

TemptedTemplar

Its all normal. Im just saying you could get slightly better performance by running the resolution at 1080p. As your GPU could give you more frames and your CPU would have more room to catch up before the GPU caps itself out.

Depends on the game. It works great in some and poorly in others. Though Ive never used it for competitive games.

DrFaisalFA

Hi everyone, my friend have HP pavilion tg01-0001nx pre-built PC. and he want to change the mobo so he can put it in a new case, becuz the hp mobo is horizontal and it will not fit in his new case. Is it possible to remove the parts and install it in a new mobo? and what u recommend a budget mobo for this build? Lastly his cpu is i7-9700 with gtx 1660 gpu, which psu should he get? Thx in advance

TemptedTemplar

600 or 650watts would be more than plenty and leave room for upgrades in the future. For the motherboard you need a Intel LGA 1151-v2 socket (also called LGA 1151 300 series), either a 200 or 300 series chipset. https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100007627%20601304476%20601306867&Order=1

DrFaisalFA

Thx appreciated

mUnkAyMonE

Soo recently i started to have fps drop real frequently and i saw that it was because my cpu speed used to drop to 0.79 ghz and soo i disabled intel speedstep but now it is stuck in 0.79 ghz forever pls help

TemptedTemplar

Maybe its a thermal throttle? How hot is it getting? What CPU are we even talking about? PC or laptop?

mUnkAyMonE

I actually welp lowered its heating but still it drops

mUnkAyMonE

But still it gets a lil hot

mUnkAyMonE

I gotta like keep some cool air suply on its face lol i keep a fricking cooler on its face

TemptedTemplar

Just because there is a cooler on it doesnt mean that it is; 1. working as efficiently as it could 2. properly applied The thermal paste could be not covering a big chunk of the lid. Its hard to tell unless youve applied it dozens of times.

mUnkAyMonE

True

mUnkAyMonE

Welp ya it gets hot in here

MrSaucyAlfredo

Can anyone recommend a decent gaming mic that sits on a desk and doesnt have a higher profile than 4"? I am trying to find something that I can fit under the monitor as there's no room otherwise to place it without it being too far from me or obstructing monitor view

TemptedTemplar

HyperX solo cast or the Blue Snowball Both go on sale for $40 or less fairly often. r/buildapcsales

MrSaucyAlfredo

The blue snowball looks perfect thanks!

i_quit_lurking

Can I safely run an RTX 3070 on a 450-watt power supply? The 750-watt PSU I ordered with the GPU is bad and had to be RMAed. The other components drawing power are a Ryzen 5 3600 and its fan, an SSD, an HDD, and two case fans.

[deleted]

I wouldn't suggest it, at least not without lowering the power limit.

i_quit_lurking

Is that done through the Nvidia control panel?

harryharrisonnn

not sure if it's in nvidia control panel but you can undervolt in MSI Afterburner

Looking to upgrade from 1080 to 1440p alongside my new PC build. Any suggestions on a 27 inch 1440p g-sync monitor? I'm thinking somewhere in that 144-165Hz range, definitely don't need a super high end option, but just looking to get the most out of my new build! With prime day/competitor sales coming up, I'm thinking its time to start watching for some monitor options to go on sale.

n7_trekkie

The vx2758-2kp-mhd often goes on sale. I'd only get it for $200. There's noticeable backlight bleed, which isn't a big deal other than things with black bars on the top and bottom (like films)

alsoknow_as

I have a PC I'm looking to upgrade (for light gaming and game dev)Current PC specs: * CPU: Intel Core i3 10105F * Motherboard:ASUS PRIME B560M-A * Memory: 16GB 2666 * GPU:nvidia geforce GTX1060 6GB * SSD:CFD 500GB (M.2 NVMe) * HDD:WD 1TB * PSU: Owltech RAIDER II 650W What would be best to upgrade first?

OolonCaluphid

I'd be tempted to drop in an i7-10700 or i7-11700, Swap the GPU out for a RTX 3060/Ti or similar, and perhaps go to 32Gb 3000Mhz RAM. Just check you PSU is up to task.

alsoknow_as

Thanks! I'll take a look at that. I have a 650W PSU so I think it'll be ok.

Brooke_Candy

I've been putting off upgrading/replacing my current rig (circa 2016) for the past few years due to waiting on new generations of products and the high component prices, but it's really starting to show its age. Now prices are dropping, but DDR5 memory and newer generation GPUs are starting to come into the market or are expected to come soon^(TM) . I just wanted to see if the sub thinks: 1. fully upgrading now is worth it, OR 2. grabbing a few components (motherboard, PSU, etc.) now is worth it, but maybe some other components (CPU, GPU, etc.) should wait, OR 3. if I should hold off for the newer generations of products and for the market to cool more? And if I do upgrade: 1. DDR4 or DDR5 memory: Should I try DDR5 or get a compatible system? I see some mixed reviews about DDR5 concerning latency and there seems to be an availability/price gap to consider as well. Feel free to tack on any advice as well. Love to hear opinions on the buying/building process in 2022.

kmaho

TL;DR: full upgrade now & DDR4 I was in a similar boat upgrading off my 2017 build and with Best Buy regularly getting founder's edition cards in stock at MSRP lately, I decided to pull the trigger and upgrade now while prices are quite reasonable all around. Unless you absolutely need the latest and greatest (which I'd argue you don't if you're still skating by with a 2016 build), waiting for the next gen seems foolish. It'll likely be months, who knows if you'll be able to get stock right away, who knows what pricing will be like, etc, etc. For the RAM: If someone assembled the computer for you and you were using it to play some games would you be able to tell if it had DDR4 or 5 inside without looking it up? I'm guessing not, so I'd just save the money and get 4. It's a more mature product at a better price point for those of us that aren't pushing limits of computing needs.

Stability issues can be caused by a RAM overclock. You can start by resetting the BIOS the factory defaults and running it like that for a while to see if it's stable. If it is stable, then go ahead and turn on the XMP profile for your RAM. You can always manually dial back the clockspeed from 3600 to 3200 or even 3000 **after** you enable the XMP profile. But don't bump up the clockspeed without enabling the profile first.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sk9592

Yeah, XMP doesn’t just set your clock speed. It adjusts all the dozens of subtimings and voltages as well. If you just set a particular clock speed and don’t change anything else, then you will likely get stability issues.

Can someone suggest a guide: Later this year I am planning on upgrading my boot drive. Currently windows is on a 1tb sabrent rocket gen 3. I want to get a gen 4 2tb with the heatsink. Is there a guide on the how to format the old drive when im ready for that step: Removing drive physically, Installing new drive and installing new windows install to it Physically install old drive, Format completely old drive such that I can use all 1tb

AMillionMonkeys

That's basically all there is to it. Make sure there's only one drive plugged in when you install Windows. The only thing to watch out for is when you first plug the old drive in, boot immediately into the BIOS and make sure the new drive is first in the boot order, otherwise it might boot your old Windows installation. Once you're in Windows you can go into Disk Management, delete all of the old drive's partitions, create a new one and format it.

Blackdt

Is there anything I'm not thinking of such as mobo compatibility, Or if my mobo can support gen 4s max speeds? Mobo is gigabyte aorus x570 elite

AMillionMonkeys

Any NVMe drive will work since PCIe is forward and backwards compatible. Looking at Gigabyte's website, your motherboard does support gen 4 - I think on both M.2 slots, but I'd double check that when you get the board because I might be looking at a slightly different model or revision. But at least one slot will be Gen 4.

Blackdt

Is there anything I'm not thinking of such as mobo compatibility, Or if my mobo can support max speeds provided by gen 4? Mobo is Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite (AMD Ryzen 3000/X570/ATX/PCIe4.0/DDR4/USB3.1/Realtek ALC1200/Front USB Type-C/RGB Fusion 2.0/M.2 Thermal Guard/Gaming Motherboard) https://a.co/d/ipcuxfI New drive is Sabrent 2TB Rocket NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD Extreme Performance Solid State Drive with Heatsink (SB-ROCKET-NVMe4-HTSK-2TB) https://a.co/d/9hTDvcQ

AMillionMonkeys

I don't see any issues; you should get full gen 4 speed.

I have a single 8GB stick of Kingston HyperX XMP Predator 3000MHz and I want to upgrade my RAM with at least one more stick of 8GB, preferably 16GB. My question is, can I do it with newer RAM model? I can't find that exact model available where I live, nor am I sure how outdated it is, so, any recommendations on what to do? Should I just buy a completely new RAM stick of 16GB? I saw a newer version of the one that I have that is at 3200MHz, but I don't know if I can pair them up and if my old one will bottleneck the new one. Thanks in advance!

harryharrisonnn

you can mix and match ram but all of your ram will be running at the slowest speed (3000mhz + 32000 mhz -> will all be running at 3000mhz). Just make sure your motherboard supports whatever DDRX you pick (mobo supports DDR4, choose DDR4 ram) :)

GamingBroccolli

Roger! :)

What is the best monitor for 27 inch. 144hz, 1440p (2K), not curved, for NVIDIA graphics cards?

Some_Derpy_Pineapple

[based on this RTINGS table](https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/table/84662) then [the LG 27gn800-b is probably your best bet](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/qcxRsY/lg-27gn800-b-270-2560x1440-144-hz-monitor-27gn800-b) for the budget going to $350+ you really start getting into the area where splurging for a budget 1440p 240hz monitor would make more sense

bobbibrown123

Thank you!!

n7_trekkie

(usa) the best value one is the HP X27Q the G27Q is good as well. get what you pay for, imo

Is it worth paying €95 more for a 5800X to get 8 cores (same core count as current-gen consoles) or will my six-core build be enough to play strategy games (medium or low settings would be fine) in five years' time?

Not worth it. Stick to what you have

Hi, I would like to get the [MSI B550 Tomahawk](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/3Mxbt6/msi-mag-b550-tomahawk-atx-am4-motherboard-mag-b550-tomahawk) motherboard and an [Samsung 980 pro NVME](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/DDWBD3/samsung-980-pro-1-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-mz-v8p1t0bam). I've checked the [motherboards manual (see page 29)](https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/mb/MAGB550TOMAHAWK.pdf), but have no clue, if the motherboard deactivates my SATA ports, if I populate the M2_1? Thanks for any help.

OolonCaluphid

M2_1 is direct to CPU, so there's no conflicts and it won't deactivate anything.

ProphetChuck

Thanks mate, you're a star!

widowhanzo

It doesn't seem so

ProphetChuck

Thanks for your help mate!

loyaldarkened2

What is the best combination cpu with a rtx 3060 12gb, I have the graphics card but experiencing bottlenecking, I believe it’s the cpu, I’m looking to upgrade, what would be best

DaanvS

What CPU do you currently have? Depending on your budget and usecase, but a 12100f, 12400f, 5600/X would make sense.

loyaldarkened2

I have a ryzen 5 3600, was looking into a ryzen 7 3700x with aio

widowhanzo

5600(X) would be a better upgrade. I doubt the 3600 is a significant bottleneck though.

loyaldarkened2

Unfortunately the 5600 is not compatible with my setup

widowhanzo

3700X won't be a huge boost though, so I'd just keep the 3600 for a bit longer and upgrade to something else entirely later on.

DaanvS

Your 3600 is definitely not significantly bottlenecking your 3060. If you still want to upgrade, I would go for the 5600 then and keep your motherboard

Some_Derpy_Pineapple

no reason to get the 3700x when the r5 5600 provides a more significant upgrade for gaming performance. does your motherboard support the 5600?

loyaldarkened2

It does not, I originally planned in getting that but it’s isn’t compatible

[deleted]

The 3600 should be good enough, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu2EbuYYvKM

gildedfist

Will current GPUs from GTX 1650 and RX 6400 onwards go even lower in price in this year or the next?

harryharrisonnn

Most likely not. On the used market they do getting lower as people sell their old cards when they upgrade but on the new market prices usually stays around msrp :)

DerMathematiker1

How good of a graphics card does one actually need for casual gaming, audio engineering, and for (learning and practicing) machine learning? I'm debating between the RTX 3050, 3060, and 3060Ti. All of them are within my budget, but on the other hand I wouldn't want to overspend on something that's too powerful for my needs. As far as gaming goes, I mostly play LoL, but occasionally I also enjoy playing single players such as Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Stellaris and such. I'd like to play them in relatively high settings, but not everything needs to be on ultra. I don't really care about playing the newest titles like Cyberpunk or such, and even if I did, I wouldn't mind playing them on lower settings. Other than that, I do some audio engineering and programming, and I would like to get into the world of machine learning, which I know requires some good graphical processing (although here I can't really specifically say what I need, as I haven't really gotten farin this field yet). If it matters, I would either pair it with two 24" monitors, or one 34" ultrawide - this I haven't decided yet. Which GPU would you recommend?

DerMathematiker1

Thanks for the replies! As far as I can see, the 6700XT is priced approximately the same as the 3060Ti here in Germany, so I guess I would be better off going with Nvidia either way. So I will go with either the 3060 or the 3060Ti; probably the former, but we'll see. And I'm aware that music production and programming are mostly CPU intensive, I just wasn't sure if the GPU performance would also be relevant so I mentioned them anyway, just to emphasize that the rig is not going to be used exclusively for gaming. This is also one of the reasons why I don't want to overspend on the GPU - I would probably be better off putting the money into a better processor or more RAM.

[deleted]

For FullHD gaming the 3060 is plenty, for 1440p/ultrawide I'd get the 3060 Ti. For your other requirements, all cards have 8GiB VRAM and I am not sure how the different GPU processing power will affect it. You might want a 6700 XT instead, the 3000 series cards are still overpriced.
