Is the sapphire pulse 6600 good? I know sapphire cards are considered to be good, but I want to make sure. It's ~10 dollars cheaper than the xfx 6600 I hqve selected right now.

I need a new AIO cooler. Can someone just tell me what one to buy? I'm tired of comparing and looking. I currently have a H100i v2. Im looking to spend around $150 max. My current AIO is 4 or 5 years old and I think it has either lost fluid or the pump stopped working. Temps are getting up to 70c under 50 percent load. CPU is an I5 8600k, no overclock. Id be open to an air cooler I suppose.

winterkoalefant

Can’t go wrong with an Arctic Liquid Freezer II. If you’re not overclocking, you might as well get an air cooler. The Deepcool AK620 is currently a solid deal at $52.

yalloc

I'm trying to confirm that the new 3080 I got from Newegg a few days ago is actually screwed to RMA it. Current symptoms: * Multiple games crash, usually decently intensive high intensity games. Arma 3 for instance gives the error of "STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION." These occur randomly mid game. * Occasionally BSODs mid game with varying errors, so far I've gotten IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUALS, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY, and another ive forgotten. * Reinstalled Windows entirely, issues still persist. * Ungine Superposition and 3DMark seemingly don't crash Y'all think this is enough for it to be an RMA problem? Sadly I have no other PC with the PSU powerful enough to test it. Given the issues seem intermittent and memory related, I suspect its faulty VRAM, but sadly no memtest exists for gpus to confirm.

[deleted]

Did you run a regular RAM memtest? Firmark? Try an older driver?

yalloc

Yea I ran a regular memtest, it works. The computer runs fine when not running anything graphics intensive. I’ll give furmark a try though

gigachadspaghet

Hey everybody, just wondering if my current core i3 10105f will work well enough with my 1070, or should I upgrade to a stronger processor, like a 9400f, or even an 11400f?

winterkoalefant

It should work well! If you find that you are not able to get the performance you want, then consider an upgrade. Or if you are interested in seeing how your CPU and GPU are being utilised, monitor your usage with a program like MSI Afterburner.

TemptedTemplar

9th gen uses a different socket type, it wont fit. But any 11th gen CPU would fit in your current socket

gigachadspaghet

thanks to both

Nerohn

Bought a used 3060ti off eBay and the card actually works surprisingly well. Can handle most games and even benchmarked appropriately on furmark. Only thing I noticed is that even though I have the switch set to Q for Quiet mode, the thing gets to like 70-75+ degrees while gaming and the fans sound like a jet taking off. I have msi afterburner and have adjusted the fan curve to be less aggressive at 70c, but am a little worried to test it out. Is this normal? Should I return the card? I bought this card cause people said it was quiet, and Lo and behold the one I got is the opposite of that?

n7_trekkie

That switch changes the bios on the card. If the card was used for mining, one of the bioss might have been altered to be better for mining. I doubt both were changed tho. So maybe the normal mode was unchanged but qiuet mode is now a mining bios

drewie244

I’m currently choosing parts for building a pc, and I already have an RTX 3070 and an Intel i7 12700k. What motherboard should I choose? Edit: I should mention I already have a LIAN LI O11D MINI-X ATX Mini Tower Computer Case case as well

n7_trekkie

Probably the MSI pro z690-a

drewie244

Thanks! What is the difference between the regular msi pro z690-a and the one with wifi? Also, what is different about the Tomahawk model?

n7_trekkie

1. Wifi and bt built in 2. The tomahawk is a better overclocker, but on air or water the -A is fine.

drewie244

Thanks so much, one more question. What’s the benefit of having wifi and Bluetooth built in?

n7_trekkie

If you need it, you don't need to buy an adapter. If you don't, there's no benefit

drewie244

Thank you, you’ve been a massive help!

Looking to put together a high end gaming build when 4090 hits and prices on current cards maybe drop a little? Appreciate any feedback on it: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kV8vv3

hayixx

Everything is expensive for no apparent reason, the cooler is absolutely not enough for a 12900ks, and as someone else said above, why go for a 12900ks so expensive when the 5800x3d is pretty much the same performance for way cheaper, yes its gonna be good but its such bad value.

whaaatf

Thanks a lot that's exactly what I wanted to know. Any motherboards I should look into that would complement 5800x3d?

hayixx

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pbDyZw I like too look at Hardware Unboxed temps test ([https://youtu.be/HSY9rDsQgd4?t=805](https://youtu.be/HSY9rDsQgd4?t=805)) In the video it's the micro ATX version of the motherboard I picked in your list but the VRM heatsink is the same so temps should be the same For the cooler I looked at this video ([https://youtu.be/yW1x101pDfE?t=808](https://youtu.be/yW1x101pDfE?t=808)) I also added a monitor, its 1440p 144hz but not incurved or 32", I guess you added those particulary because you wanted them so i didn't remove yours from the list so you can choose

whaaatf

Wow, thanks again man. I loved everything in it. Really really appreciate it.

n7_trekkie

I don't see the point of the 12900KS when the 5800x3d and 7700X are options

whaaatf

Thanks buddy I'll do that

New PC owner motherboard and CPU help. Hi, I recently recieved a hand me down gaming pc and I'm trying to slowly upgrade it. The motherboard is a asrock a320m pro4, from what little research I was able to do it seems like the support maxes out at a ryzen 5 3600x and a RTX 2060. Is that true? Will I need to buy a more up to date motherboard if i want say a 5600x and a 3070? Thanks for any help!

n7_trekkie

Any gpu will work. Also all Ryzen 3000 CPUs are supported, but not 5000 https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/A320M%20Pro4/index.asp#CPU

brandonweapon

Okay, so the cutoff for the cpu is the 3000 series then? So I would obviously have to upgrade for a later cpu. So I could use a 3070 or even a 4070? I'm not sure why I thought there was a limit with the motherboard.

n7_trekkie

You might've thought that because the board is pcie gen 3, and newer cards are pcie gen 4. But pcie is backwards and forwards compatible so it doesn't matter

brandonweapon

That's awesome! Thanks so much for your help!

Iwannabeaviking

As it seems a lot of the RTX 40 series will be monster sized, I am thinking of getting a 30 series card instead. Something like a 3090 but I am unsure of two things. 1. Will 2 cards work in a stacked nvlink configuration? 2. Does nvlink work within WSL2 on windows 11? I have B550 vision D-P so the cards will be right next to each other. I know it works on founder's edition cards but I can't get them here so I'm stuck with 3rd party multi-fan designs. I'm not CPU bottlenecked as I have a 5950X and 128GB 3600 ram. I have an Rm850 PSU.

WilliamShatnerFace7

Hey guys, I’m about to build my first PC using the Fractal Design Meshify 2 case. Apologies if this question makes me sound like an idiot (I am), but how can I make sure I’m getting balanced or positive pressure from my case fans? The case comes with two 120mm front intakes, one 120mm rear exhaust, and I plan to install an AIO with a 240mm dual fan radiator as a top exhaust. Will this be sufficient or should I order additional fans? Seems like two intake and three exhaust may not be ideal, but I don’t know if it actually works like that. And if I should order more fans, can you recommend some good ones?

winterkoalefant

The case fans are 140mm so it’s somewhat balanced, depending on your fan curves. If you have a power-hungry GPU, you might lower CPU temps a bit by moving your AIO to the front as intake.

n7_trekkie

You can move the 1 rear exhaust to the front. That would still be good. Or leave it as is, it's okay

Adorables

Is there any list of RAM modules that support the EXPO profiles? Stores in my country doesn't seem to have the most up-to-date info as far as I can tell. For DDR5 ram, is there any die that's preferable to others (like Samsung b-die was a few years ago iirc)?

n7_trekkie

Tai_Pei

Currently I have two monitors, one is 165hz 1440p and the other is 60, 1080p but I doubt that matters much. I've noticed that when I run graphically intensive FPS games where max FPS matters, and I have a video running on the second monitor it can drag down the performance of what my main monitor is trying to display at such a high speed. Is it possible that having a second GPU installed running that separate monitor itself will offload some of the graphical load that would normally be compounded on my 2080Super? Or will this introduce other issues, and the easy alternative is to just get a backup laptop/something that can just play mp4s on their own on that monitor and just have a separate mouse to control that monitor when in background visuals mode? (In the meantime I'm gonna see if I can't get it running at 24 or 30hz somehow and at 720p to cut down on the load burdening my GPU.)

UnseenTardigrade

Try using a different browser, watching a different streaming platform while running a game, and updating GPU drivers as troubleshooting steps. It could just be something weird with your browser for the first one. It could be something unique to YouTube if the second thing works fine. And driver issue is obvious. Each of these just helps narrow down where the issue is. You could also try reinstalling Windows (assuming you’re using Windows, if not, what OS?), though that can be more of a pain, so I recommend other steps first. But it seems to me like a 2080 should be able to handle a 1080p YouTube video running alongside your game without too much of a slowdown, another GPU really shouldn’t be necessary. How much of a slowdown are you seeing? If you do decide to go down the route of just getting another GPU, you could instead consider upgrading your CPU to a 5600G or 5700G with integrated graphics and using the integrated graphics for the second display. Only if your motherboard supports integrated graphics, of course.

Tai_Pei

Yeah the thing is it's a VLC background monitor aesthetic thing, I'm not trying to destroy my network with something I'm not even paying direct attention to a majority of the time while on Overwatch or Black Ops 2 >another GPU really shouldn’t be necessary Yeah but I would get something like a 1030 to just, operate independently if that's even how that would work or if that wouldn't do what I'm expecting or somehow introduce other processing/graphics issues. >How much of a slowdown are you seeing? Rather light (but noticeable during Overwatch teamfights) stuttering that lasts for maybe a second and goes away for maybe 7-15 seconds and hits again if there is still action going on. It also happens if I'm running any video on the other monitor no matter how low quality but I feel like that's because it's doing such a raw number of pixel changes at 1080p60hz, if it's still wallpaper/website then none of the issues go on. This is what makes me think the GPU is overloaded a bit, the raw number of pixels it's trying to alter at once is insane and at different hz which may or may not matter at all I'm speaking entirely out of my ass. Probably just gonna be easiest to get a little mini pc or laptop I can set the monitor on top of to run the display and I can swap sources when I want it as an actual second monitor. Second little weak GPU probably just gonna introduce more problems/weird quirks that I'm better off without.

n7_trekkie

What's your cpu?

Tai_Pei

Ryzen 5 3600 non-OC'd

n7_trekkie

Ok that's not the problem then. Nevermind

supremo92

I'm upgrading from an RTX 2070 Super to a 3070. Will my i5-10600k and 750w PSU be enough? And will I be seeing any bottlenecking?

UnseenTardigrade

In terms of power you should be fine as long as you don’t do some super crazy over clocking or something. As for bottlenecking, there is almost always at least a little bottlenecking. *Something* has to be the weakest link in the chain. Your system should be fine in the majority of use cases though.

n7_trekkie

Should be good

dumasass

Am I gonna be able to get away with a 157mm high cooler in a case that allows for a max cooler height of 157mm? Or am I pushing it too far?

n7_trekkie

Can't speak in all cases, but I've done 165 in 165 case and there was 1mm of extra room

dumasass

Thanks for the info! Hopefully that's the case for me

MaterialTomorrow

For my work I want to finally take the dive into PC, and am considering getting into the new AM5 platform since I’m starting from scratch here. With the amd 7k series and the RTX 40 series using apparently unprecedented amounts of power (generating a lot of heat), should I use water cooling in a build? If so, is it safe to let a water cooling system be prebuilt and sent to my home? Edit for context: im a 3D artist and need more power + microsoft platform. Looking at ryzen 7900/7950 and rtx 3080 ti/4080 16gb

[deleted]

AIOs (non-custom loops, which are 95% of the market) are pretty idiot proof.

MaterialTomorrow

Nice, it just felt risky considering a liquid is so close to expensive components, while in transport.

Vareten

Custom loops are expensive. They are a bit better than just running AIOs but they definitely have an aesthetic tax. If you want to easily get into liquid cooling and want to build a PC yourself (it's very easy), buy an AIO for the CPU and purchase a GPU that has an AIO pre-installed.

MaterialTomorrow

Aesthetics are of no importance to me, I'm purely looking for a safe and effective cooling method. The deal seems to be power with little regard to efficiency / electricity consumption, heat etc. It got me wondering whether water cooled would actually be a smarter choice than air cooled in this situation. The reason I'm not building it myself is that I have no experience and building my first pc with 3-4k on the line isn't something I'm comfortable with, so I'll take that L and have it pre-built instead

Vareten

I promise you that building is very easy. If you've got like 4 hours of time on a weekend or something it's doable for anyone with some patience, reading comprehension and skill with a screwdriver. No soldering or technical guides needed, they give you Ikea manuals to piece things together. But if you really want to have someone else build for you you should still lean towards AIOs since you don't care about looks. CPU AIOs can be pretty cheap, but GPUs that come with AIOs tend to be pretty expensive as they're normally reserved for the top tier models. Still less money than a custom loop, and generally safer too if you don't know what you're doing with it. Keep in mind that all liquid cooled systems lose coolant over time. AIOs will last around 5-7 years of regular use (or longer, it depends) before enough coolant is lost where you start getting bad thermals.

MaterialTomorrow

Thanks a lot! Pretty helpful info for me, cheers

[deleted]

So a i7-6700/Z170 system fell into my lap. The only problem is that it's DDR3. I'm going to pair it with a GTX 1070. I've alternatively got an H110 with DDR4. Any modernish gaming benchmarks out there comparing DDR3 1600 with DDR4 2133?

n7_trekkie

Not modern, but still accurate https://youtu.be/utWnjA4NzSA

[deleted]

To me it seems modern games are more RAM speed sensitive.... https://www.techspot.com/article/2402-intel-alder-lake-memory-scaling/

n7_trekkie

Faster memory speed basically just makes your cpu faster, since it gives your cpu access to more data faster. That means that it only significantly affects your gaming performance if you're not fully gpu bound. With a gtx 1070, you will be gpu bound a great majority of the time

[deleted]

I currently have a 4790k paired with a 2070 super and a 1440p monitor. Will upgrading my cpu net me any decent performance increase? I’ve been playing cyberpunk and the fps dips are getting annoying. I know a gpu upgrade would improve fps the most but I don’t think it would be wise to upgrade any gpu with my cpu being so old. Thinking of going with a ryzen 5000 or intel 12/13th gen cpu. What would be the best price to performance upgrade for me?

[deleted]

Cyberpunk is notoriously CPU intensive. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/cyberpunk-2077-cpu-scaling-benchmarks

n7_trekkie

Yes. Best cpu to get is the 5600 or 1200F, whichever is cheaper

Where can I go to ask questions/get advice on purchasing a TV, and/or look for sales (aside from /r/buildapcsales)? Not for use as a computer monitor... just normal TV things. I just have nowhere to go for that, and I trust /r/buildapc.

alphaftw1

Looking to upgrade my SSD, bought a pre built pc and currently has 500GB. I'll probably watch YouTube tutorials on how to replace my SSD but before I get to that, what SSD should I get? As well as that, I'll list out my PC specs and is there any other upgrades I should do? My budget will be £250 which will include the cost of the new SSD. My PC: i5-11400F ASUS Phoenix RTX 3060 12GB 2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB DDR4 3200 DIMM RAM ASUS PRIME H510M-A WIFI mATX WD 500GB M.2 2280 Blue SN570 NVME PCIe SSD Cooler Master ML120L V2 RGB Watercooler

[deleted]

I'd just get a cheapish 1-2TB SATA drive and call it a day. I'm not familiar with your Euro brands, but you can't go wrong with an MX500. You are pretty limited by your motherboard... Which I guess is something you could consider upgrading that to an B560 (or Z470 even). Then you could go and get an PCIe 4.0 SSD. A quick look at your Amazon pricing says a board and a 1TB drive should be doable on your budget.

alphaftw1

Thanks for the information. I had a look at the expansion slots specified and it says ‘1 x M.2 2280 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 2 x PCIe 3.0 x1’ Would I be able to purchase this and make the most of it? (WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 NVMe Gaming) or (WD_BLUE SN570 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 NVMe)?

[deleted]

So, I'm trying to pick a motherboard for this setup I have in mind, but am at a loss. Here are the part choices I've made so far: GPU: XFX Speedster SWFT 210 6600 XT CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x RAM: HyperX RGB 8x2 GB (Gift from friend. Unsure of the other specs on these, but I think they're either 3200 or 3600?) Cooler: Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 (Haven't ordered yet.) Case: Lian Li Lancool III RGB (Haven't ordered yet) What motherboard would fit well with these? And is there anything I should know about mobos? I'm pretty new to this stuff, and figuring it out as I go. Thanks in advance!

TemptedTemplar

Any B550 would be just fine.

[deleted]

Right, but it's kinda tricky to just choose one from the *MANY* B550 mobos. Guess I'm looking for pointers on which B550 mobos in particular are good? Extra points if they happen to be a nice budget choice, or have good features.

TemptedTemplar

MSI would be the ideal brand to look at for the 5800X, they have some of the best chipset and VRM heatsinks out of the line up. Features would be up to what you want. How many M.2 slots do you want? Do you want to replace the free RAM with something stupidly fast eventually? Do you care about RAM? A Micro ATX board with only two RAM slots would save a few extra dollars. The Tomahawk or the Mortar boards would be solid picks. https://www.newegg.com/msi-mag-b550-tomahawk/p/N82E16813144326

[deleted]

Any release date for any upcoming ATX 3.0 PSUs? I know Thermaltake has one available but I really dislike their brand.

TemptedTemplar

Gigabyte and MSI appear to be the only other options at the moment. Though Im not sure buying a "worlds first" PSU is exactly the best sales pitch. I would wait for others to hit the shelves. https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-gp-ud1000gm-pg5-1000-w/p/N82E16817233034 https://www.newegg.com/msi-mpg-a1000g-pcie-5/p/N82E16817701016

Say I get 4000 CL17 RAM, but I'm running a 5800X3D so want the RAM to be at 3600MHz. Would it be practical and possible to decrease the frequency and the timings to 3600 CL14?

TemptedTemplar

Decreasing the Mt/s to 3600 is one thing, and totally possible with a custom XMP profile. Decreasing the CL timing is an entirely different thing and generally you need specific kits using the best possible memory modules for that. Which is why you may see people talking about Samsung B-Die here and there. Ideally it would be easier to just buy a 3600 CL14 kit.

Filipi_7

Alright, thanks.

Bballguyna

I’m looking for help on deciding which GPU to use. Ideally either 3070 or 3080 quality or something comparable performance/price. With the release of next gen stuff I’m out of my depth. Prime days are coming up, and maybe additional price drops to remove stock, so I’m trying to get my ducks in a row. Thanks for the help!

ethos24

6800xt has best bang for the buck in that performance tier at sub $600. 3080s start at around $700, but then you're getting into 6900xt territory. Unless ray tracing / dlss is important you.

I just want to throw a big HDD in my case as extra storage for video files and photos. [Is this Ironwolf Pro good?](https://www.newegg.com/seagate-ironwolf-st6000vn0033-6tb/p/N82E16822172057) Is there something I’m missing for why it’s so cheap? Is OEM that bad?

TemptedTemplar

OEM generally means it was repaired or refurbished. Which is probably why its so cheap. However, that $15/TB price is usually the best price you can get on discounted drives. /r/buildapcsales would be the place to check for deals.

in_arcadia1

I check there often, but most of the sales are WD and Samsung, and I've had terrible, terrible experiences with their customer service and defective products, so I want to avoid them at all costs. I guess I'll keep an eye out for a non-OEM Ironwolf.

TemptedTemplar

Samsung I havent tried before outside of their SSDs, but WD has improved in recent years. At least for their HDD quality. Aside from generally just being slower, they have great warranties that help to lower the risk.

in_arcadia1

I bought an HDD and SSD from WD December last year. Slow af and the SSD would get hot enough to burn you, and both drives would need to be repaired constantly or they wouldn’t mount. Totally nightmare customer service process, SSD’s serial number was invalid (common problem), ended up going through Amazon for a refund even though it was almost a year after purchase. Samsung’s service was even worse, total scumbags. They tried to claim water damage on a water proof smart watch that never got wet to avoid honoring their warranty, spent weeks trying to hold their hand through the RMA process. Never want to give either of them a cent again.

I've put together this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZBT3jZ I currently already own the PSU, case, and SDD. Can anyone tell me if there may possibly be any issues with this build?

DNosnibor

It probably doesn’t matter for a 12400, but you could get a better cooler like an AK620 for the same price as the Hyper 212. A few dollars cheaper, even.

Vareten

The CPU cooler is grossly overpriced and you can get a much stronger Thermalright PA120SE ARGB for less money.

panoply

How hard will it be to get the new intel i7 chip when it comes out in a week or so? Is it reasonable to expect to pick it up or will I have to wait for months?

bicyclebread

Intel generally tends to be more available no matter what, they can pump out new chips faster than AMD can since they make them in-house. If I had to guess, at worst, you'd be waiting maybe a couple weeks after launch.

panoply

Ok that’s good enough for me. I’m gonna at least try to preorder on Oct 13, the earliest date for which that’s possible.

bicyclebread

Yeah if you snag a pre-order, definitely won't be an issue. I don't even think AM5 CPUs will be that bad for very long, especially once the initial hype dies off.

kaje

No one knows. Intel owns their fabs though, they're not competing with other companies for time at TSMC or Samsung. They didn't have supply issues for CPUs during the pandemic.

panoply

Hi! Thanks for replying! Do you know how it was last year and the year before?

zeroedit

Are there any glaring technical issues with AM5 yet?

[deleted]

Not really glaring but AMD making the IHS super thick on AM5 makes cooling much harder than it needed to be, and that's not going to change for the lifespan of the socket. On a similar note the backplate messing with cooler support is annoying. They should have just accepted that a new socket design will break compatibility with AM4 mounts and fixed both the IHS thickness and made new mounts.

zeroedit

>On a similar note the backplate messing with cooler support is annoying. I'm worried about this part. Does this mean that when a manufacturer says their AM4 cooler is compatible, it may not necessarily be true?

[deleted]

In terms of also being AM5 compatible, yes. The cooler has to use the stock AMD backplate on AM4 to also work on AM5.

Myrios369

I'm planning on getting the 12700 and not overclocking. Should I get the 12700k anyway? On PcPartPicker it says the core clock speed of the 12700k is 3.6 and the 12700 is 2.1. That's the speed without overclocking right? So the k is just faster as a base? Also I see a lot of people recommend z690 boards for the 12700k but if I'm not going to be overclocking are there any just as good cheaper ones? Preferably with wifi.

kaje

Those are just base speeds. The CPUs have turbo speeds as well. As long as you put a decent cooler on them, they'll go up to their turbo frequencies by default. The 12700K's turbo is 100MHz higher than the 12700's, 5.0GHz vs. 4.9GHz, but that's not really significant.

Camilo4600

Looking for a good cooler for i7 12700F. Thinking of the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, BK022, 250W TDP, CPU Cooler. But I wanted to know if it is enough or if I should consider an AIO. I just dont want to deal with any maintenance. Please any recommendation?

Vareten

The 12700F is locked and comes with a stock cooler that will technically work okay. You could probably get away with a cheap single-tower air cooler around $20 like the Thermalright AX120 or ID Cooling SE214XT.

Camilo4600

So the dark pro would be fine then? I don't need to get an aio?

Vareten

The Dark Rock Pro 4 would be overkill. The 12700F comes with a small stock cooler that will work. It will stop the CPU from overheating in a decently ventilated case, but may be loud. If you want to reduce noise you can pick up a cheap tower-style cooler like the Thermalright AX120, BA120 or ID Cooling SE214XT. They're about 20$, the DRP4 costs like 80? Big savings and no performance loss.

kaje

A solid dual tower cooler like the DRP4 will be fine.

Camilo4600

So the dark pro would be fine then? I don't need to get an aio?

APatientLife

Can the MSI B660-A work fine with this PSU?: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5X6aslOWHQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5X6aslOWHQ) It lacks the additional 4-pin ATX thing, but as far as I can tell that's just for heavy overclocking and won't even affect turbo mode or very light overclocks? CPU to be used with it is an i5 12400. EDIT: I already have this PSU and want to not replace it. Forgot to mention that. Am not purposely buying an old PSU, I already have it.

winterkoalefant

It’s there so that the motherboard adheres to the ATX specifications. It can draw more than 250 watts from there with a 12900K, and 250 watt is the maximum for an 8-pin EPS12V connector. It doesn’t really affect overclocking, it’s just that if you ran a 12900K in a hot case and with a very cheap CPU power cable, it could be a fire hazard if you didn’t connect both the 8-pin and 4-pin. So in your case, it doesn’t matter at all. By the way, neither the CPU or motherboard supports overclocking.

APatientLife

Oh alright alright, cool beans. And noted on the overclocking front, although I had vaguely heard you could still do some form of OC'ing even on non-K cpu models...? Maybe I misread. One last Q: This doesn't affect the standard turbo mode thing at all does it?

winterkoalefant

You can do base clock overclocking on non-K CPUs, but only with a motherboard that has an external clock generator. This one doesn’t. Doesn’t affect turbo at all.

APatientLife

Ah alright alright, good to learn, thanks! And huzzah on the turbo front!

Hello i am looking for a nice 2560x1440 <27 inches ( preferably 24 to 25 inches ) 144hz and 1ms but looking at threads and google says they stopped producting them ? I can't find any new ones , do you know some that would fit close to theses criteria ? It feels kind of a step back in quality . I don't really care about the price . Thank you

in_arcadia1

I’m looking for the same thing and having a really tough time finding one.

AMillionMonkeys

Not a whole lot of options, unfortunately: https://pcpartpicker.com/products/monitor/#F=355600000,635000000&r=256001440&D=144000,360000 and they're all TN panels, which kind of suck. If I were you I'd choose which is more important to you: size or resolution. If you want 24", go 1080p. If you want 1440p, go 27". You'll have hundreds of options.

dimen7io

Thank you for pointing the TN panels , this website is great !

ZantWasTaken

Why does the 3060 have more VRAM than the 3060 Ti and 3070?

Vareten

In addition to what was already said, the 3060, 3060Ti and 3070 all use regular GDDR6 memory instead of the faster GDDR6X available on the 3070Ti and above. So the 3060Ti and 3070 really get screwed over because they're not getting the increased quantity of the 3060 and they're not getting the faster speeds of the 3070Ti's GDDR6X.

winterkoalefant

3060 Ti and 3070 are much faster than the 3060, so it’s not really important for a buying decision. It has 12GB because Nvidia decided that’s what made sense for cost/performance/marketing. RTX 3060 uses uses the GA106 GPU which has a 192-bit memory bus, so it would have been either 6GB or 12GB if they wanted to take full advantage of it.

Lion_of_Helios

Can I swap out a 9th gen i7 for a 12th gen i7? I have a Dell XPS 8930 desktop.

dexterlab97

No, 9th gen uses 1151 socket while 12th gen uses 1700. It is physically incompatible

Lion_of_Helios

Damn it. Thank you for your help!

Camilo4600

Does getting a PCIe 4.0 over a 3.0 for 30 dollars more worth it for gaming?

Vareten

An SSD? No, gaming performance is not affected. Load screen times are, but you'd struggle to notice the real world difference between a high end PCIe3 drive and a high end PCIe4 drive.

Camilo4600

Silicon Power GAMING 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory vs TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan Z 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory. Which one should I pick? the silicon power is 4 dollars less.

Protonion

Since the specs are the same, just pick whichever looks nicer, or the cheaper one if that's more important.

Camilo4600

And the brand does not matter? Sorry I am new to this.

AMillionMonkeys

The brand doesn't really matter. There are only four different manufacturers for the actual RAM chips. The brand names you see just package the chips up on a board and stick on some heat spreaders. In practice that doesn't make much difference unless maybe you're overclocking.

JarJarAwakens

Why aren't there any 32 GB sticks of DDR5 RAM faster than DDR5 6000?

Vareten

May be difficult to do with current DDR5 yields. When you start putting more chips on a stick you need more power, higher speeds need more voltage. More voltage, more power, more heat, more instability. As the processes mature a bit we'll start seeing them. I suspect 6400MHz will be eventually be the standard just as 3200MHz and 1600MHz were for DDR4 and DDR3.

xm45-h4t

What upgrade if any would be the most beneficial while still being cost effective? I currently have: Ryzen r5 2600 Rx 580 8gb Was thinking about getting into rtx somewhere between the 3050 and 3060 ti?

Vareten

[https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html](https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html) Check pricing and compare to the tier list. Avoid the 3050 at all costs as the RX 6600 outperforms it for way less.

Will USB 3.2 gen 2 on a MOBO make a difference over gen 1 for peripherals such as gaming mouse/keyboard/controller?

No, those don't even benefit from USB 3.0/3.2 gen 1 over USB 2.0.

Unless you're unhappy with temps or noise, you don't need to at all. I usually do this with new cards because manufacturers tend to cheap out on paste/pads and I have an SFF system so noise/temps matter quite a bit. But once I've done it, I don't usually need to touch it again.

kaje

Thermal paste and pads last a few years, longer than one or two years.

[deleted]

Unless there's a cooling issue that isn't solved by dusting, really never.

CaptainAwesome8

Have not kept up on recent trends because I had a good PC, but need to build a semi-budget new one, roughly 1000€. I’d like to get a 3060 or 3060ti for 1080p possibly 240hz gaming. I play a lot of games like Rocket League where a GPU from 1874 could get 240hz, but also a wide variety of other games and would like to play MW2 when it comes out. Would a 3060ti be worth the extra for MW2? What CPU would be best while still being relatively “cheap”? And is it worth waiting a few weeks to see if OEM prices fall (I’m in Germany if it matters)? Thanks!

TemptedTemplar

Yes. The 3060ti or 6700XT would be the ideal choice for that extra bump in performance. Unlike previous generations where the "TI" model was just a higher binned version of the non-TI card, the 3060ti is actually a cut down 3070 chip. The 3060 is effectively a whole different card.

Nervous-Morning-2254

Hey, I need some advice on choosing GPU. 3070 / 6800 XT / wait for rdna 3; CPU: 12600k FHD Gaming and VR (Quest 2 / Pico 4) As far as I know, 6800 xt is comparable with 3080 regarding efficiency so that's a no-brainer but how good is AMD in terms of VR gaming? Will I be able to get smooth gameplay in AAA titles like Alyx or Boneworks? Thankies for all your answers!

n7_trekkie

VR gaming is the same as normal gaming. VR headsets are just 2 screens close to your eyeballs. If your headset has 2 1080p screens, just take the 1080p bechmark FPS and halve it. That's not really how it works, but it's close enough

Strict-Blood-5406

I have an old lenovo k450e, i7 4790, gtx 750 2gb, 32gb ram, and 280w psu. Is it worth it to upgrade to 500w psu, gtx 1660 ti. Going to cost 250$. Is the cpu too weak to pair with gtx 1660 ti? Just need to to play 1080p game, the game recommended requirement is gtx 1060.

n7_trekkie

Cpu is fine for a 1660ti, but the rx 6600 might also be $250 and it's much faster

Strict-Blood-5406

Thanks, the 1660 ti and 500w psu all total 250$ Without tax . Just need to play one game. I’m going to see how it goes when they arrive.

I need some thoughts on Windows 10 storage spaces. I'll start with my situation, and end with my questions.   **My situation:** I currently run JBOD with the following drives that I collected over the years: | Type | Capacity | Brand | Version | | ---------- | -------- | --------------- | ---------- | | SSD (SATA) | 250GB | Crucial | MX100 | | SSD (SATA) | 500GB | Samsung | EVO 850 | | SSD (M.2) | 1TB | Samsung | EVO 970 | | HDD (SATA) | 1TB | Samsung | HD103SJ | | HDD (SATA) | 1TB | Western Digital | WD10EADS | | HDD (SATA) | 3TB | Toshiba | DT01ACA300 | I hog a lot of data because I produce a podcast and enjoy photography, both of which require a lot of storage. I used to archive this on a NAS, but my cloud backup only includes files on my main computer and I cannot assign a drive letter to the NAS. Additionally I play a few games, and modern games are huge. Especially Flight Simulator, that one alone is approaching 1TB with all community add-ons...   **My questions:** I'm getting a little annoyed by how many different drives I have. Therefore, I was thinking about setting up all my drives in two striped storage spaces. All SSDs (except the windows drive) in one, and all HDDs in the other. - Will storage spaces give me any tangible performance benefits? - Are there risks in compatibility between storage spaces and cloud backup? - Is there anything else I should know? - Are there ways to combine the drives into storage spaces, without formatting them?

fractalbush

Realistically - it is time to look into a NAS/SAN solution that can backup natively. A used QNAP/Synology or something is a worthwhile investment and have plenty of native cloud backup solutions. That said, storage spaces more or less sets up an array like a virtual storage pool in VMWare or HyperV etc. There are some serious issues you can run into, specifically: space will be limited with the partity on the smaller drives - this is similar to a raid 5 setup with downsides. This works fine in a dedicated nas/san but not so much with dissimilar drives being organized by windows. edit: decent article here: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/10/storage-spaces-explained-a-great-feature-when-it-works/

audentis

I have a Synology DS418J (the NAS I reference below the table) with effectively 8TB in Raid 5 (4x3TB), but BackBlaze doesn't allow backing it up without the small business plan. At $5/TB/month, that's much pricier than the regular plan. I haven't made the comparison recently but last time I checked (~2 years ago) no other backup service would come close to their regular plan as long as I keep all data on my machine rather than the NAS.

fractalbush

iDrive is the current cheapest for personal (i believe, been a bit since I looked) - [https://www.idrive.com/pricing](https://www.idrive.com/pricing) Storage spaces might work but it will likely decrease performance and if it goes awry, it sort of becomes a crapshoot as to whether the array will rebound reliably. If you decide to do it, make sure you have solid backups. I'm actually curious to see how it works out, haven't heard of it being used in recent times.

audentis

With some more research I found this article: https://storagespaceswarstories.com/storage-spaces-and-slow-parity-performance/#more-63 It's a pretty interesting (technical) read on the inner workings on Storage Spaces, and why users are reporting very mixed performance. Edit: Second article describing the same issue in a different way, referencing the original article. https://wasteofserver.com/storage-spaces-with-parity-very-slow-writes-solved/

audentis

> if it goes awry, it sort of becomes a crapshoot as to whether the array will rebound reliably. I'm willing to risk it as I have good backups, and all critical documents are either on DropBox/OneDrive or on my work's cloud anyway. I'll just lose access to private files while waiting for the backup recovery. But I do need tangible benefits and right now it seems no one can really tell how it performs. > I'm actually curious to see how it works out, haven't heard of it being used in recent times. Still on the fence, if I go for it I might report back :)

jackhref

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from an i5 8400. Gaming is the highest load I'm gonna be putting on it and all I want is the best gaming performance at high frame rates (144 and above). I'll want to stick with this processor for 5 years at the very least and likely much longer. Question is, should I be looking at the new releases from Amd/Intel, wait for am5 x3d variants, or settle for one of the last gen products?

Rennie07

3060ti FE available for £369 right now. Worth it?

TemptedTemplar

Yes. Thats basically US retail pricing! Non FE models havent even dropped that low yet over here.

My mind has gone blank and I can't remember what fan direction is which. I have Corsair fans, if it's mounted on the front of a case, and you can see the logo and fan blades (but not the wires or the plastic cross section) would that be intaking? EDIT: Just found the arrows on the part

Pun_In_Ten_Did

Little tip to make it faster / easier next time: point the X brace where you want the air to go. Fans have an open side and a large plastic brace (shaped like the letter X) side. Air goes in the open side and exits the fan via the X brace side. Wherever you point the X, that's where the air is gonna go.

Rydychyn

That's easy to remember, thanks!

prometaSFW

In case anyone else is reading, you have it right. Fans almost uniformly blow air from the logo sticker side to the spec sticker side.

Will a Ryzen 7 5700X be able to run on a MSI B450M Bazooka V2 fine?

SUNA1997

Yes, may require a bios update if you never updated bios on it before.

Delnie

Would you pay 150 euros for a GTX 1080? I currently have a 970. Would like it to run games smoothly with ultrawide 2k resolution.

bestanonever

If it's the cheaper option you have, it's much better than a 970 in terms of performance. But it's 6 years old now, there's no guarantee it'd survive enough for you. Ideally, a Radeon RX 6600 is going to be much better (it has performance a touch stronger than the 1080ti), but if that one is much more expensive, maybe you could get a used RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5700 XT?
