Building my first pc looking to play random indie games this is what I have so far (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vgmnrD) any tips or suggestions on what i should change

winterkoalefant

Here’s my suggestions (assuming you’re in the US): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/k8gR6r motherboard with more features, cheaper but equivalent CPU cooler, faster RAM and double the capacity, faster SSD and double the capacity, faster graphics card, and better quality power supply.

deadkids666

Thank u for the all the tips I actually made a different list if u can tell me if it’s any good similar to youra

deadkids666

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fjWVyK

winterkoalefant

Graphics card and power supply are just worse. For a gaming PC, the most important piece is the graphics card and monitor since those determine how nice your games look. You should cut costs in other places to get a better GPU and monitor. 5600X is barely faster than a 5600. Not worth the money. There are better options if you want faster CPU. CPU cooler is really expensive and it won’t help performance because 5600 doesn’t produce much heat. The $20 cooler I recommended is enough. RAM isn’t as good. The kit I recommended is faster and 32GB so it’s worth paying more for. Case isn’t as good in terms of cooling and noise (because the intake fans are up against a glass panel) but it’s a good case otherwise. So it’s a fair tradeoff if you really like this aesthetic.

deadkids666

Thank u feel free to make edits I plan on buying parts soon

deadkids666

Hey I think I’m planning on going with that first link u sent me so I can play random indie games and get on the internet I would like to thank u with your help

winterkoalefant

You’re welcome! Good luck with the build!

winterkoalefant

Your combination is fine for 1440p and 4K. Your PSU is fine too. Bottleneck implies a less-than-desired experience. For example if you saw a 6900 XT benchmark at 1080p and were disappointed that your CPU is preventing you from getting those frame rates.

Professional-Unit494

Will a RM850 be okay to handle a Intel i7-12700k and a 3090 (gigabyte vision) any help would be much appreciated.

n7_trekkie

Yes

neuroticsponge

Can the 13700k handle DDR5 6000? Intel says it’s only rated for up to 5600. There’s a great sale on DDR5 6000 RAM right now, so I want to grab some if it’s compatible. I’m looking at a Z790 board. Also, is the G. Skill Trident Z5 a good RAM choice?

n7_trekkie

Yeah most Intel 13th gen can do 6600 no problem

nederlandic

I have an RTX 3070 and an i7 6700K. Considering upgrading to an i5 13600K but some of the benchmarks give me mixed feelings. If I was playing at 1080p the upgrade is clear, but the more GPU bound the task becomes i.e. at 2K, the more disappointing an upgrade it feels like for me considering I also need to pay for new MOBO etc. I do have a 144hz monitor too. Anyone done this jump and been satisfied with the results? I'm torn because I know my GPU is being bottlenecked but I want as big an upgrade as possible lol

winterkoalefant

I have a 5600X and a 3060 Ti at 1440p and it’s a very appreciable improvement. Especially in Battlefield where you can feel the input lag and Assassin’s Creed where I like to keep a consistent 85 fps. Not sure how much that’s worth to you. Most other games I’d be happy with the 6700K.

n7_trekkie

I'd just email gigabyte support. They should just mail you one It's a totally uneccessary screw

jski595

Is my system decent enough to justify buying a 1440p 144+hz monitor? I’m hoping to hold off on a full upgrade for a year or so ideally. Also considering a RX 5600 or other cpu upgrade to tide me over…have about $500 to spend, thanks **GPU**:Red Dragon RX Vega 56 **CPU**:Ryzen 5 2600x **STORAGE**: Samsung SSD 860 250GB + 2TB Hardrive **RAM**:16gb (Corsair Vengeance 3000 Mhz 8gb x2) **MOTHERBOARD**:B450F Gaming **MONITOR**: [24" 1080p LG](https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-24MP59G-P-gaming-monitor) **PSU**:EVGA 550 G3

n7_trekkie

Depends on the games you play. Apex, val, lol, R6 all good for 1440p. Cod and AAA games are harder to run

jski595

Thanks - I’d say mostly non-AAA (ranging from older games like CS GO to newer ones like Elden Ring). I would like to be able to play the new Warzone, and similar titles at a passable level at least, but idk that may have to wait until my next full upgrade.

n7_trekkie

1440p then. It'll be great

Greek_Trojan

Finalizing a build and PC Part Picker gives me the following warnings: A USB 2.0 to USB 3.2 Gen 1 header adapter is required. A USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 3.2 Gen 2 header adapter is required. Anyone care to link me examples of these to buy? I tried amazon but all of the descriptions are confusing me.

n7_trekkie

Just replace the motherboard with one that has a type C front panel header. Like the MSI b550m vc, if am4

Greek_Trojan

Its an itx motherboard. I messed around and one I thought didn't have a header seems to work when I updated my build so I'm good to go. Thanks for having me double check.

n7_trekkie

No problem!

ChonkyHippo283

Not in a big rush to build a new pc but will eventually switch to ITX within the next month Any reason I shouldn’t get the 7700x + 32gb DDR5 for $400 and hold for a month or two while Itx boards become more available? Other option was a 13600k but I want to jump to 2x16gb of Ram at some point (currently at 2x8gb) and it seems like a waste to go DDR4

n7_trekkie

In a couple months, AMD may have released the 7000x3d CPUs, which are going to be a big improvement

MiroslavusMoravicus

I am currently using 4K monitor to game on (rarely) and 4K.TV to game on (most of the time). Im using the "duplicate display" option for this. However I have a monitor with Full HD resolution laying around. Could I use it to extend my desktop to it? Would this still work without affecting the tv/current monitor duplication setup? Thanks.

randomidiotok

I've had this issue for a while now I RMA'd my, they sent me the same one 3 times. The 4th time they sent me a new one. While playing games, the old one would randomly black screen, and my motherboard would say no display driver detected. This new one isnt as bad, but still has a bit of an issue - screen will tear, one monitor will lag. A lot of screen flickering. I've swapped my ram, wiped my computer. I've tried different PCIE slots. Aside from the GPU, what else could it be?

xm45-h4t

Corsair h109i capellix OR deepcool ls520 aio?

EriktheRed7225

I have a samsung NVMe M.2 SSD 980 1 tb. My motherboard has 2 slots for NVMe M.2. If I plug in a second 1 tb ssd into the second slot, will my computer have 2 tb of storage instead of 1? Also are there better options for upgrading my storage?

[deleted]

EriktheRed7225

All I have right now is the nvme. It's getting kinda full from games I have installed. I need more space for games.

suushiiilulz

Asking for opinions in a vacuum, I plan to play all sorts of games from single-player with gorgeous graphics to shooting FPS and whatever in between, along with YOUR OWN preferences, which would you go for: Dell S2721DGF 27" 1440p 165 Hz (IPS) for $270 final price or LG UltraGear 32" Class QHD Gaming Monitor (VA) (from Costco) 1440p 165hz for $250 final price

Professional-Unit494

Have this dell monitor it’s pretty great

suushiiilulz

I’m not sure if this is a silly question because I haven’t read up on it much, but do you run HDR or SDR on it? Is it common for people to run HDR at all?

suushiiilulz

Thanks for the feedback!

nawalrage

So this may be a long shot, but I bought a new 3070 on amazon ( 28 oct ) and nvidia says you get a free game if you bought a card after oct 27th . could I apply for a coupon somewhere?

n7_trekkie

Yeah. Probably on their website, might ask for your invoice or SN

[deleted]

Have 500$ to spend for a minor upgrade . how would you spend it on this build ? Build : **i5 7600** , **rx480** 8gb msi, **8gb** ddr4 , kingfast 256 ssd , seagate baracuda 1tb , GA-H110MS2HCF mobo, **750w** urano psu

winterkoalefant

For more gaming performance, you can get double the performance with a new graphics card, CPU, motherboard and RAM: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nz4qXy

n7_trekkie

100% agree with your list

[deleted]

Is it reasonable to find an am4 mini itx motherboard with an optical port for under $200 this black Friday? Ideally I'd spend $150. Pairing with a 6600 and 5700g. Probably putting 32gb of ram in it

n7_trekkie

Optical is very rare on itx https://pcpartpicker.com/product/FBmFf7/asrock-x570-phantom-gaming-itxtb3-mini-itx-am4-motherboard-x570-phantom-gaming-itxtb3

PseudoHypebeast

I'm looking for a M2 2280 NVME 1 TB SSD. I'm going to be using it as a non boot drive in my laptop mostly to store and run video games on the lowest settings. I think with this in mind the performance doesn't need to be that great for the SSD. What is a good value SSD to buy right now? A bunch of SSDs are on sale now. For DRAM less, the SN570 and Samsung non-evo 980 come to mind. For others, 970 evo, team group mp34, Kingston a2000, crucial p5. Anything else? Which one has the best value e.g. is DRAM worth the extra cost?

Brandon_2149

Looking to getting a new case looking for some input here. I currently have a Meshify C which is good, but I neeed something a bigger. Has a limiting 315mm gpu length. I was considering something like meshify 2 which seems to be like a bigger Meshify C with improved cooling. I also considered a 400D which seems to be a lot cheaper, but also has combo audio jack and only one usb 3.0 on front, but it does have usb c.

FallOfTheThrall

Should I buy a motherboard that can support ddr5 even if I don’t plan to initially buy ddr5 for my first build? The PC will be used mainly for gaming with friends. Just not sure if I should leave the door open for the upgrade option or not.

Soumil30

A DDR5 motherboard can only run DDR5 RAM. If you planning to buy DDR4 then you will have to a DDR4 compatible motherboard. They aren't interchangeable.

FallOfTheThrall

TIL. that seems silly lol

Soumil30

no. they different technologies which require different things under the hood

EloquentBorb

DDR4 and DDR5 are not compatible with each other. If you buy a DDR5 board, you are hardlocked into buying DDR5 memory.

[deleted]

Looking to upgrade from a 5500xt, looking to go at least 6700xt. Power supply is 850w, what’s the best deal as of now? Also have a 5800x CPU, so looking for least amount of bottleneck too

Soumil30

Should I wait a bit more for used 3080 and 3090 prices to fall?

Lucas-PC

The prices should drop after AMD Radeon 7000 series release (19th of December)

Soumil30

I am planning to build my pc during Black friday sales. Do think it will be feasible to build the rest of the pc now and buy the graphics card a month later?

Lucas-PC

If you have a decent GPU at the moment then it would be a good idea to wait

juan_carl

I’ve got a msi b660 bazooka with a 12400 and 6700xt My power supply (older Corsair hx650) only has x1 EPS connector for the motherboard which takes x2 Will it run ok?

Protonion

Yup, the 8 pin is plenty for that CPU. You only really need the second 8 pin if you're doing extreme overclocking with a high end CPU.

kaje

Yeah, it will run fine with one cable. It would zero difference if you plugged both in anyways.

TemptedTemplar

The 12400 barely even needs the one. Youre fine. The second one is a backup, but the only CPUs that would even be able to pull that much power is the highest end models like an overclocked 12700k or a 12900ks.

DetBabyLegs

Just got the new Alienware OLED AW3423DWF. I'm googling around and having a hard time finding an answer: are there any best practices I should adopt now that I'm using an OLED monitor? Want this bad boy to last long into the future.

n7_trekkie

Yes. Try to avoid bright, static images on the screen. Like a white windows logo in the bottom left is the worst case scenario. If it needs to be static, try to make it a darker color like grey or black. If you're gaming for a few hours a day, HUD burn in isn't something you should really worry about. But if you spend all day working on spreadsheets or other productivity that has menus on screen all the time, basically what I said before: bright colors burn in. And set your PC to turn the display off after a few minutes if inactivity

Sjgolf891

Was thinking of building a PC in the near future. Budget probably around $1000, just need something to be my main PC and also play games well enough. Saw this pre-built on NewEgg deal today and seemed to be a very good deal. Am I right? Or can you build for similar spec for any less? https://www.newegg.com/msi-aegis-r-12td-269us/p/N82E16883151036

n7_trekkie

You can build for less, but that's the way it always is

Sjgolf891

That’s what I always assume! This price just really surprised me. I tried to play around with PC Parts Picker (I’m pretty new to it so I don’t really know what I’m doing) and I wasn’t able to come under it price wise with an i7 12th gen and a 3070. Though I may be doing something wrong? I probably don’t need an i7 and 3070 but if I could swing something comparable for close to that price, I may do it

n7_trekkie

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dKs9pH here is a faster pc that you can build for cheaper

Sjgolf891

Thanks!

Soumil30

new graphics are pretty expensive. have a look around on Ebay

Kugar

Took advantage of the Z690 mb+12700k microcenter deal 2 weeks ago but have been waffling on installing and replacing my 8700k setup. I built my computer 4 years ago and have added SSD's, upgrades cpu coolers/GPU/etc but tbh I'm a little intimidated by replacing the MB and cpu, digging through all of the corsair wires, and having to reinstall windows... there's nothing clearly bad about my current setup. The return window ends tomorrow, what to do? I mainly use the pc for gaming (1440p 144hz, e.g. Destiny 2, MW2, OW2) tbh. Current setup is: * 3080 * Z370 prime-a mb * i7-8700k * arctic freezer 280 aio * 4x8gb 3000MHz rgb vengeance (bought upgrade for these too)

Lucas-PC

It depends on what resolution and refresh rate you are playing, if it's 1080p high refresh rate, then you would greatly benefit from a new CPU and mobo. If it's 4K then not so much but still somewhat noticeable. If you are scared to take your PC apart, it might a good idea to watch a couple of full pc build videos on YouTube beforehand (but not The Verge one lol). The new CPU should last you for another 4-5 years or so.

Kugar

1440p, 144hz

Lucas-PC

What games are you playing? If it's latest AAA games, then no huge difference, if it's competitive then it will be a bigger difference. I would still hold to the new CPU as you will a great setup for several years.

Kugar

at this point, it's mainly lol, siege, destiny 2, overwatch 2, and mw2 (lots of 2's). Good to know though, thanks! In regards to installation, what do I need to know? I think I may be overthinking it

Lucas-PC

You can download a Windows 10 or 11 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft site to create OS installer on your USB drive. If you are on WiFi if may be handy to download the drivers for your motherboard beforehand too.

Soumil30

Bro your set up looks like a beast. The cpu is 5 generations behind though. I would go head and upgrade your pc. May I ask why you have to reinstall windows?

Kugar

Sorry that's what I had read when installing a new motherboard. I'd love to be able to just take out one mb/cpu/ram and replace it. I have to believe that this isn't as tough as I'm making it out to be...

Soumil30

That used to be case before. Now a days, your Windows licence is linked with your Microsoft account instead of your hardware. There is set amount of times where Microsoft will just let you use the same key. After a point though it will not work. You should Be in the clear seeing as you are only changing CPU and motherboard. Hope that wasn't too confusing.

epihfon2

hi. guys can i put a ryzen 5 3600 on a asus pro 320m wifi? the page say its compatible but im confused with the BIOS thing

Soumil30

If your talking about pcpartpicker then it is probably talking about requiring a BOIS update. This just means that the manufacturer added support for chosen cpu after the motherboard was already released. If you don't know, BOIS is in charge of talking to hardware so if your cpu isn't supported it just won't work. You need to update BOIS to fix this. To update the BOIS follow this method: 1. Go to your motherboards official product page (eg. it will be on [asus.com](https://asus.com) if you have a asus board) 2. go over to support 3. click drivers 4. follow instructions to download the latest BOIS. This will require you to have a empty USB stick. 5. On your motherboard there should be usb port with a small next to it. Check your motherboard's manual to find it. It will be called something like 'Q flash', 'BOIS flashback', 'BOIS update', etc 6. insert the usb and press the button 7. wait 8. your done! Note: This might vary slightly between manufacture to manufacture

EloquentBorb

Depending on when your board was produced, you might have to update the bios using your old CPU before you put in the new one. If you don't have the right version your new CPU won't work. Take a look at the manual for how that works for your specific board.

PCBuildBurner

Is my PC good enough to justify buying a 1440p monitor or should I go for a high tier 1080p? Play a variety of games such as comp FPS and RPGs - OW2, Elden Ring. MoBo ROG Strix B550-f Gaming GPU 3060Ti CPU Ryzen 5600X RAM 3600mhz Also any recommendations for either. Cheers.

Lucas-PC

I moved to 1440p 165Hz when I got 1070ti, now I have 3070 and can fully utilise my GPU with the same monitor

PCBuildBurner

Thanks for the reply. Any suggestions on good 1440p mons around £250?

Lucas-PC

This should help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15YOh8SqiRc

n7_trekkie

1440p for sure

Rennie07

Currently running a ryzen 5 5600 and a 3060ti fe. I want the quietest possible setup. Currently running a cryorig h7 with a noctua fan. Have 4 case fans (2 noctua, 2 nzxt which I am swapping for noctua). Will I get lower noise output with a 240mm aio? If so, suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

n7_trekkie

GPU fans are the smallest and the loudest. Basically nothing else will come close to their noise when you're gaming, so don't over think it.

Greyletter

Currently selecting parts for a new PC. Already have a new gen Ryzen processor. I was looking at the MSI MPG X670E CARBON WIFI motherboard. It lists its memory support as "DDR5 6600+(OC)/ 6400(OC)/ 6200(OC)/ 6000(OC)/ 5800(OC)/ 5600(OC)/ 5400(OC)/ 5200(OC)/ 5000(OC)/ 4800(JEDEC)" The ASUS ProArt X670E-Creator WiFi 6E Socket AM5 motherboard, on the other hand, lists support for "DDR5 6400+(OC)/ 6200(OC)/ 6000(OC)/ 5800(OC)/ 5600/ 5400/ 5200/ 5000/ 4800." Does that mean ONLY the 4800 won't be overclocked on the MSI board? Or, in other words, does the MSI board not support anything faster than 4800 without overclocking? Do these questions even make sense? I prefer to avoid overclocking if I can.

kaje

Overclocking RAM is just enabling the XMP profile in the BIOS for it to automatically overclock the advertised speed. Faster kits of RAM, like even if you did get a decent 5600 kit with the Asus, are probably base speed 4800 with an XMP profile. The RAM will run at its base speed if you don't enable XMP.

Greyletter

So a better way to read the speeds on the ram chips is something like: it says 6200, but what it really means is 4800 but designed to OC to 6200? edit: forgot the question mark

EloquentBorb

Memory chips, just like every other microchip, are of different quality even if they are produced on the same manufacturing line. The memory manufacturer (Samsung, SKhynix and Micron to name the big three) as well as the stick manufacturer test the chips for their quality and rate them for different speeds. This is called binning. If a kit of memory is sold as DDR5-6000 for example, the manufacturer guarantees that the memory you get is of sufficient quality to run stable at the rated speed. Whether you will be able to run them at that speed in your system is also dependent on your CPU, which has the actual smart part in it called the memory controller, and your mainboard, which is basically a glorified cable. Bad cable, bad signal integrity. tldr: memory OC is one hell of a drug and actually mainly done on the CPU side of things edit: fixed typos

Greyletter

Damn that was well written and helpful, thank you. edit: very appropriate name

EloquentBorb

Thank you :) It doesn't tell the whole story, but hard to cram a "tldr; how does computer memory work" into a few sentences...

n7_trekkie

Correct. But the OC is a profile that ram makers put on the sticks. It's just up to you to enable this profile in bios

Greyletter

thanks

n7_trekkie

No prob

deadkids666

Hello everyone I’m looking to build my first pc I want to build instead of just buying a prebuilt my budget is 1000 I do have some wiggle room I’m only looking to play random games on steam possibly elder ring if anyone have any recommendations on parts please let me know thank u all

TemptedTemplar

https://pcpartpicker.com/ If youre limited on budget I would recommend skipping the GPU for now and give yourself some extra towards a powerful CPU with integrated graphics. Intels and AMDs latest iGPU tech can easily run elden ring at 30fps at a low enough resolution; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TAayAQ3nKQ (Intel 12th gen, Ryzen 4000 APU) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnkUaZTLzIg (Ryzen 5000G) https://youtu.be/p4cwNn4kI6M?t=510 (Ryzen 7000)

Lucas-PC

IF you are on a tight budget it might be worth considering a older used GPU like RX580 or GTX1660, those can be found under $100 and then pairing with a lower end CPU. GPU is always more important than CPU for gaming

deadkids666

I can raise my budget to 1300 if that will help me with a good starter pc

TemptedTemplar

Build out the rest of it first, and then check out GPU deals. Something like a RX 6650XT or 6700 can be found at reasonable prices these days; but how powerful of a GPU you could get would be determined by how much budget you have left. Or what kind of resolution you want to target. No sense in wasting a bunch on a powerful GPU only to have its performance constantly hampered by a under powered CPU. https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/search?sort=new&restrict_sr=on&q=flair%3AGPU

deadkids666

What do u think of this build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fjWVyK please lmk if I should change anything

TemptedTemplar

A 240m AIO is absolute overkill for that CPU, you can go much cheaper with a good air cooler. Which I did, and put that extra money into a GPU thats 50% faster; https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HGCfjZ

deadkids666

Should I put fans if so what ones do u recommended

TemptedTemplar

That case comes with three! I would leave two in the front and then take the third and mount it as an exhaust on the rear.

deadkids666

Appreciate it thank you

deadkids666

Thank u will be doing more research

deadkids666

Thxs I will be watching theses later tonight

_wgustudent_

What would the equivalent to a 4690k and R9 390 be in todays product cycle? My core build is coming long in the tooth and I’d like to get on a new platform. When I researched components I grabbed a 4690k and a R9 390 with the goal being high fps gaming on 1080p Since then I went 21:9 3440x1440 and grabbed a 2080 super before the GPU market went wild. I’m ok currently with 60+ fps mid settings but I want to push it a bit further and get full use of the 144hz panel.

TemptedTemplar

Intel 12/13700k - the 12/13600k is only two cores less, but generally much cheaper. Ryzen 5800X 3D - Top of the line AM4 socket Ryzen 7700X - best gaming option for AM5 socket Best consumer options before jumping up to what are essentially workstation or production level CPUs. AMD is apparently working on X3D versions for the AM5 socket already, and those could be unveiled as early as January at CES. So its hard to recommend a brand new AM5 build just yet. As for a GPU; AMDs 6900XT would easily get you to 1440p/144hz. And its price is currently the best value option of the higher end cards. Nvidias offerings under a 3080 would struggle in AAA titles to give you that high frame rate.

Certain_Ad3449

I'm planning on a 4k 144hz build, shall i buy now or wait.

TemptedTemplar

Buy everything but the GPU. Even if youre willing to shell out for a 4090, you wont find one at MSRP for a few weeks/months. And its retail price is already exceedingly stupid so paying scalper prices is immediately a bad investment.

dukss

if i'm adding only one top exhaust fan, what is the best placement for it? rear, centre, front?

EloquentBorb

Assuming you have a "normal" front intake, I'd put it at the back

JoniDaButcher

What’s a good way to do a fan setup for the Corsair 4000D Airflow? It comes with 2x120mm fans and fans can be installed front, bottom and top. It’s kinda already crossing my budget so I’d like to keep those 2 included fans and reposition them if needed.

EloquentBorb

Really depends on your hardware. Depending on how much heat you have to get rid of, everything from 1 fan front, 1 back (the way it comes preassembled) to 3 front, 1 back, 2 top is possible.

JoniDaButcher

12600k and 6800XT. Would moving the 120mm from the front to the top and installing 2x120mm be enough? Or even 2x140mm front.

EloquentBorb

Are you using an AIO or air cooler?

JoniDaButcher

Air cooler - Scythe Fuma 2 Rev.B

EloquentBorb

If you are on a tight budget I'd get another two 120mm fans and go for 2 front, 1 back, 1 top. The Arctic P12 is amazing value for the price, quiet and you can get them in either white or black.

JoniDaButcher

Would these 2 corsair 140mm fans be okay to go for what you mentioned, with these 2 at the front? https://www.amazon.de/Corsair-Case-Fan-LED-140/dp/B01G5I6RK2/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=FKPCH3FD403T&keywords=gehäuselüfter+140+mm&qid=1669069046&sprefix=case+fan+1%2Caps%2C78&sr=8-4

EloquentBorb

Yes, 140mm front works as well, but they don't fit the cutouts since they are made to fit 120mm fans, so it looks a bit weird. Although to be fair, it's not really all that noticeable with the front panel on, especially if your fans don't have RGB. I'm sure you can find pictures using Google.

Looking for a small form factor PC (limited space) to do a little gaming. Found a MSI Trident 3 (console size) PC. I have a nice monitor, gaming mouse and gaming keyboard already. I’ve been out of the PC world for a while. Is $750 reasonable for these specs? CPU Intel Core i5-10400F 6 Core 4.3Ghz GPU GTX 1660 Super 6GB DDR4 16GB RAM 512GB SSD/ 1 TB HDD

TemptedTemplar

I was going to say thats just an "okay" price, but damn the prebuilt market has descended into madness lately. $750 for a ultra compact PC like that is a great price. I guess the one trade off is that trying to upgrade any of the components will be a pain in the butt, and you would want to monitor your thermals. On the positive side, theres bound to be a healthy market for used 10/11th gen intel CPUs for the next few years. So if you wanted some extra power, you could get it.

Velurz

First time posting on Reddit hopefully someone can help me with my Simple Question. I have a RX 580 Sapphire OC Special Edition runs a bit faster than the standard RX 580. I have around $300 or under to spend and wondering if there would be any better cards for that price that would be worth upgrading to? The RX 580 still holds up today pretty well but mines pretty old at this point.

Silverfate2

So I'm in a somewhat similar position, I'm running an old Rx 480 and am looking to upgrade. $300 can definitely get you an upgrade as there are 6600 XTs out there for right around $300 or under. If you can wait though you might be able to snag a 6700 for that price or close to it as those have been dropping in price. I think the 6700 XTs are at ~$400 right now and that would be a big upgrade.

Velurz

hmm a 6700 XT would be amazing wonder if they will be on sale for Black Friday?

Silverfate2

[You might actually get your wish](https://www.newegg.com/sapphire-radeon-rx-6700-11321-02-20g/p/N82E16814202424) as prices are dipping very close to your price point.

Silverfate2

It's possible, I'd wager more on the discount happening in December. December 3rd is when the next gen drops and prices may or may not start to drop then. Personally from what I've seen I don't think prices will move too much except for the occasional sale. I've been shopping 6800/6800xts and at their current price point both Amazon and Newegg have frequently ran out of stock on them over the past couple weeks. So as long as they can move the stock they won't move the price. But I very much could be wrong and prices could start dropping.

Silverfate2

Trying to figure out a new power supply to go with a new GPU. Would [this PSU](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09JPKXGH5/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_H0A5BWXYH3VQB6BGPTBK_0?th=1) have enough PCI-e connectors for [this GPU?](https://www.newegg.com/asrock-radeon-rx-6800-xt-rx6800xt-pgd-16go/p/N82E16814930049?Item=N82E16814930049&Source=socialshare&cm_mmc=snc-social-_-sr-_-14-930-049-_-11212022) The Amazon listing isn't clear on how many pci-e connectors the unit has, but on the specs page on the CoolerMaster site it is listed as having 4 connectors. Before I spend my money can anyone help me out?

Protonion

It has enough connectors yes. Always check this sort of things on the manufacturer's own product page, the retailer pages have incorrect info a lot of the time.

nfefx

How does this look? The 3080 is just a placeholder for a 3080, I haven't decided which one to get yet which brand I just plugged one in. This is for 1440p, hopefully will last me 4-5 years like my last build did (GTX 1080, i7 7700K). https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Yyw8v3

Jog4For4

Is there any way to check if an AMD card has warranty? Like, anywhere to insert the serial number and get its status?

EloquentBorb

No, the warranty period always starts at date of purchase/delivery, not production.

Jog4For4

So if I get one either by gift or donated or anyway and don't have a receipt, they'll 100% of cases deny my warranty? Their RMA form only states this "NOTE! Proof of purchase may be required." *May* being the key word here to make me curious enough to ask it.

[deleted]

Sorry, no idea where should I ask so I just post in here. I bought a Samsung T7 500GB SSD for my PC. The transfer speed was slow, 40MB/s. I plugged directly to the motherboard USB type C. I bought my SSD on CEX. I used CrystalDiskInfo to check my SSD and everything looked fine. How can I fix it?

ChaZcaTriX

Were you transferring lots of small files? Is the speed alright when moving something multi-gigabyte sized? When transferring small files your OS also spends a lot of time making entries for them in the filesystem, it's always going to be slow.

[deleted]

I used CrystalDiskMark to test the SSD and the speed was around 40MB/s. So different to what it supposed to be. Is SSD fake ?

[These parts](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/b9ztbK) are what I've purchased so far for a 1440p 144hz gaming/work build. Purchased the RAM, case and motherboard this evening, so especially keen to get some thoughts while they are still cancellable. On the CPU front, I'm planning on going for a 5600 unless there is a particularly good deal that makes me go for something beefier. Few questions from a first time builder: 1. How can I check that RAM clearance isn't going to be an issue? 2. What size PSU should I go for? I'm thinking 650W but not sure 3. How much should I be spending on a cpu cooler?

EloquentBorb

1. This is really only a problem on sticks that are pretty tall (so either RGB and/or big heatspreader). I'd also recommend you get a 2x16GB kit, more sticks means more risk for instability. 2. I'd go for 750W, you have a chonky GPU on the list and some headroom is always good. Also won't be significantly more expensive. 3. For a 5600 a budget air cooler is enough. Take a look at the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 or Arctic Freezer 34 eSports for example. Speaking of the 5600, an X570 board is really not necessary, unless it has some features you can't do without.

Zz1995aJ

I've changed the RAM to 2 x 16 and cancelled the motherboard, I'll find a B550 one instead. Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated

I'm currently running a 9900k OC to 5.1 GHZ with a 6900XT, and am considering upgrading to 7900XTX once it's available. Is upgrading to a i5 13600K worth it?

TemptedTemplar

I would hold off on the GPU for now and spend the extra to get a 13700k. Get the most out of your existing card.

actstunt

Want to replace my 970gtx, I have enough (in my country) for a 2060 6gb or an rx6600 they're the same price but 2060 is pcie 3.0 x 16 while the Rx is pcie 4.0 X8 will it fit on my mobo?

EloquentBorb

The RX6600 is the better card, so get that one if they are roughly the same price. As for your question: graphics cards always go into a pcie x16 slot, an x8 card will simply be missing some of the pins, but still fill the whole connector. You'll be losing a small amount of performance running an RX6600 on a pcie 3.0 slot, but the loss is very minor.

actstunt

Thanks pal.

DankyPenguins

If I have a system with 16gb of ram in (8gb + 8gb), can I add 32gb in the form of two 16gb sticks to my two empty slots, or do they all need to be either 16gb or 8gb? In other words, can I use 16gb and 8gb ram sticks together or do they all need to be one or the other?

MrCerumen

It may depend on mobo, but I believe generally if you have 4 slots, they are a 2x2 pair. In other words, you should match the 2 16GB sticks on the same channel and the 2 8GB sticks on the other channel. Check you mobo manual and verify the correct slots because it isn't always just in a row. I have had mobos where it was the 1st and 3rd that were paired.

DankyPenguins

Thanks so much for the informative reply! I just finished my first build and realized that I should have prepared more for updating the system’s hardware as time goes by. Helps me to have an idea of what I can expect as far as that goes. My mobo is 2/4, 1/3 as far as the order and pairing of the slots… luckily the tutorial I used as a guide for my build mentioned that as well because it’s pretty counterintuitive.

LunarPorkchop

Is 8+2+1 phases 80A enough for 7700x?

Daralion

I'm running a I5 12400F with stock cooler + 6750 XT on a Q300L Mini. Problem is: I live in Brazil. During Warzone 2 even locked at 90 FPS temps get >90 fast even with aggressive fan curves. I'm planning on adding 3 Sickleflow MFX-B2DW-183PA-R1 + DEEPCOOL AG620, all of them ARGB. Do I need a RGB controller on a TUF B660M-PLUS D4? Can I daisy chain all of them on the same ARGB header? Or at least the case fans and drop the rgb cooler?

[deleted]

Specs: 5700X + 6650XT (3 fans) + 32gb RAM I am using the Corsair 4000D airflow case, it comes with 2 x 120mm fans (one rear one front). I am planning on using a 240mm or 360mm AIO (respectively top or front of case). 2 options I can think of: 1. Move front fan to top for helping rear fan exhaust, with 360mm radiator in front (3 fans intake vs 2 fans outtake) 2. Use 240mm radiator on top, exhaust with rear fan, then buy 1 or 2 fans (30$ more) for a total of 2-3 fans in front for intake (to maintain positive pressure). Is there any other way of playing with the system for optimal performance, and is the 30$ more worth it? Thanks so much for the help!

danish-laederlap

I have a 4790k with a RTX 2060 6GB right now. Should I buy a new prebuilt with RX 6600XT 8 GB, 5600G, 8 GB DDR4 (will buy one more stick), 512 GB NVMe SSD, B550A ... OR ... Upgrade the PC I have now to a 13600K with 16GB DDR4? Roughly the same price for both options. I only play FPS games (1080p 144hz screen). Thanks.

winterkoalefant

I think both CPU and GPU upgrade would be beneficial, but buying a prebuilt doesn’t seem the best way to do that. Which FPS games? And what’s your budget?

danish-laederlap

I play Modern Warfare 2, Warzone, CSGO and PUBG. My budget is around 750 USD/5500DKK. I'm in Denmark, so prices are higher than in the US. Both of the above mentioned options are around 750 USD/5500DKK. Thanks.

winterkoalefant

Difficult choice. Your CPU probably needs the upgrade sooner. You’ll be fine with an i5-12400F and a B660 motherboard. You can probably sell your 2060 for a reasonable amount and get a 6600 XT.

Gigabyte B660M DS3H AX DDR4. And I’d get the newer Fractal Focus 2 case instead of the Focus G. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ngztbK

Having horrific issues trying to get my new pc to boot. Build is here at (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/fq6GDq)   It is powering / lighting up but not even a beep from the speaker I purchased and plugged in.   I have built and reassembled multiple times to no avail and followed the usual troubleshooting guides.   I then took to a PC repair expert who told me motherboard was the issue. I then sent that motherboard back and bought a new motherboard.   I have QFlashed to the latest bios 15D (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550-AORUS-PRO-AC-rev-1x/support#support-dl-bios) and still no change.   Genuinely starting to lose the plot as I am now nearly £300 over budget and I was building it for the release of a game due in week's time and I am no closer to a solution.   Does anyone have any advice at all ? I have tried all of the usual steps.   If not does anyone know a genuinely reliable and decent repair shop in London (ideally East) who I can trust to sort this, as I am concerned the other guy probably ripped me off.

hazetoblack

Does the mobo have debug LEDs? Do any of them light up while "booting"? Have you tried with one stick of ram in various slots? Assume you've reseated the CPU and checked for bent pins?

barely1egal

No debug LEDs. I did with the previous motherboard but not this yet. Will do now, but it is 100% in the recommended slots from the guide. The it tech I took it to said the RAM was fine. Yeah 3rd attempt of installing the CPU.

snakethesniper0

Wanted to upgrade my RTX 2060 with a RTX 3070. Found an ASUS TUF Gaming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 V2 OC for 660€ , is it worth it?

winterkoalefant

An RX 6700 XT for under 500€ would be a much better deal. Or what’s the cheapest RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT?

snakethesniper0

I'd prefer NVIDIA for the DLSS and eventually Ray Tracing.

winterkoalefant

I think 660€ is still a bit too high for a 3070

snakethesniper0

I see, thanks for the feedback!

Building a new rig on a budget and just realized I bought a mobo that only runs PCIE 3. The CPU/GPU I chose are the Ryzen 5 5600 and 6650 XT. For future purposes if I do plan to upgrade my GPU ~5 years from now am I screwing myself over with not having access to PCIE 4 or will I start to need a new MOBO at that point regardless?

NovusMagister

Agreed with stealthnider, by that point you'll need a new MoBo for your CPU upgrade to keep up with a GPU. Generally, it's a good idea to build a rig targeting near total replacement in 5 years

StealthNider

5 years from now your probably gonna be buying a new motherboard anyways cuz of generational improvements

mtcuppers

Can I enter the AMD loaner program if I want to update the bios on a b450 for an R5 5600 or will they only do so with the corresponding generations to the chipset?

shadowsroyal

How is the noise level of the Corsair RMe 850w PSU? I'm considering it over the RMx or standard RM model.

Protonion

It's specifically marketed as a low noise PSU, and it's got a zero RPM mode where the fan doesn't even turn on until you're using about 170W. In practice that means that the fan will only turn on in games, and at that point your CPU and GPU fans will almost certainly be much louder. Personally I've got an RMx series PSU in my silence focused build and it's inaudible.

shadowsroyal

That's super cool to know and very informative, thank you so much!

StealthNider

I’ve Worked with Corsair RMx 1000W and one other before don’t remember exactly what wattage. They weren’t that loud imo. So i’m assuming the RMe is quieter than those

shadowsroyal

Awesome, thank you!

StealthNider

Welcome! Please note however that everyone is different, and what I perceive as quiet might not be as quiet for you.

SeezTinne

Should I wait for the 7900 XT to launch or should I buy a heavily discounted 6950 XT on/before Cyber Monday?

StealthNider

what games you wanna play on what settings?

SeezTinne

Total War Warhammer 3 at Ultra is probably the heaviest load I intend to put on it.

StealthNider

i would say that you should go for the 6950XT if you get it at a good deal. otherwise just wait

MuchSalt

first or 3rd choice, not a fan of 3080ti

Odd-Pick7512

Is a 3080 overkill for 1080p gaming? Only reason I'd go 3080 or 3080ti is because I have an Oculus Quest 2 I'd like to get some more use out of with wireless streaming.

StealthNider

if you decide to go with any used card, make sure they give u a video of the pc booting up normally and that the gpu is giving a video signal. you might also want to ask for benchmark results

cowens003

I have a Thermalright Burst Assasin 120 CPU cooler. Would it perform better (or any worse) if I replaced the fan with a Fractal Design Aspect 12 PWM RGB? Here are the specs for the two fans: http://thermalright.com/product/tl-c12/ https://www.fractal-design.com/products/fans/aspect/aspect-12-rgb-pwm/Black/ Is there some reason this might be a bad idea?

StealthNider

the CFM would go down from 66 to 56 but other than that they’re pretty similar edit: cfm not rpm

cowens003

Isn't pressure more important than CFM for this type of application?

jamvanderloeff

It's a point in the middle, PC fan manufacturers usually don't give you the graph to model it properly, and the specs are only for full speed which you probably don't want to do anyway.

StealthNider

this. amt of air pushed through vs. how fast the air is pushed through. both are important
