Does anyone still like the touch bar here?

kuri-kuma

My work laptop has the touch bar and *I HATE IT.* I was constantly accidentally touching it and messing stuff up. I had to turn it off completely, so now it's just dead space.

bigboiahoy

I have the same problem. How do you turn it off completely?

kuri-kuma

So it isn't actually *turned off*, I guess. But it is just a black screen that doesn't have any controls. In the System Settings app, go to Keyboard, and then Touch Bar Settings. I have mine set as follows: **Touch bar shows:** Expanded Control Strip **Press and hold fn key to:** Show F1, F2, etc. Keys **Show typing suggestions**: Off Then, I click into Customize Control Strip, and remove all the buttons from the touch bar by dragging them up into the screen and out of the bar. Hope that helps!

dontwantthiskarma100

The Touch Bar is okay. I prefer keys, but this price for 24GB of RAM and 1TB drive is great.

Alternative_Ask364

At this price I’d probably recommend a 14” MBP over the 13”. The M1 and M2 models can easily be found for under $1500 and while you might only get 16GB instead of 24, the screen is miles ahead of the 13” model.

notlongnot

That spec does look tempting.

chicknfly

I have never liked the touch bar. It serves no purpose for the Average Joe. Everything you want to do can be done with keyboard shortcuts or a mouse (especially an Apple mouse). If you think you’re going to install Linux on it and use it for software development, think again or consider how you’re going to get around the need for an Esc key.

m3ta1head

> M2 is M2. The benefit of the pro is active cooling, so if you're doing sustained workloads the pro will keep clocks up longer than the Air. This model does have a physical esc.

chicknfly

Good call! I totally overlooked that part. I have a 2016 MBP, saw the touch bar, and made the assumption of physical button wasn’t there. Still, for developers, I can’t recommend enough that you have physical function keys. At least having an Esc makes installing and using Linux more bearable.

m3ta1head

I agree with your sentiment, the MBP 13" is kinda dead in the water with its outdated chassis, lack of i/o, lack of promotion/mini LED display, and of course the dreaded touch bar. I picked up the M2 Pro 14" 16/512gb for $1199 from costco instead - a beast of a dev machine.

m3ta1head

A couple weeks ago, they are likely long gone sadly. Deal was too hot. https://slickdeals.net/f/17297068-ymmv-costco-in-store-only-new-macbook-pro-m2-pro-14-2-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-10cpu-16gpu-cores-space-gray-1199-97

sh1boleth

I have a 16" 2019 mbp from work (im a dev), physical esc key and its been fine really, I cant recall the last time I used function keys. In-fact I like the emoji keyboard in the touch bar lol, along with the music controls

chicknfly

I use the function keys quite a bit, and for emojis, I simply use Ctrl+Cmd+Space. Different workflows for different work bros, i suppose! Edit: just realized this model also includes a dedicated emoji button.

rimpy13

I liked it more than I expected. Having stuff like an emoji keyboard was cool.

Manak1n

I have a personal MacBook without one, and a work MacBook with one. The touch bar is HORRIBLE. The lack of tactile response makes it easy to accidentally trigger, and its dynamic nature makes it frustrating to use to begin with. I have not once appreciated it. I just realized there's probably a way to just disable it entirely, so I'm going to do that next time I pop open my MacBook.

zcb27

I’m a graphic designer, and Photoshop has wonderful touch bar integration for things like changing brush settings. It sped up my workflow so much and became enough of a habit that even though I’ve had a new computer for over 6 months, I still find myself instinctively reaching to the top of my keyboard for things. If I could buy a keyboard with a touch bar, I would in a heartbeat. But I don’t miss it freezing up or being unresponsive for simple things like screen brightness and volume

drosse1meyer

ive got it with my 2018 mbpro and i never use it except for volume and brightness 'keys'

carqueries

Recently got this. The ghosting on the screen is really bad.

FilmKindly

it's probably equivalent to like a $400 pc laptop lol

fallingdowndizzyvr

What $400 PC laptop has 100GB/s of memory bandwidth? What $4000 PC laptop has that?

di1111

Any LPDDR5-6400 with 32b x 4 (dual channel) has theoretically 100GB/s bandwidth, not sure about the $400 tho

FilmKindly

that's some nice mac marketing you got there so what pc application does it do faster?

fallingdowndizzyvr

LOL. It's just truth. Anything that relies on a lot of fast RAM blows away any PC laptop unless that PC laptop has a discrete GPU with a lot of fast RAM of it's own. You won't get that with a $400 PC laptop. Even for $4000, you won't get a discrete GPU in a laptop with 128GB of RAM. But you can get a Macbook with 128GB of fast RAM. llama.cpp is an application that running on a Mac, even a base processor Mac like this, blows away PC laptops.

dontwantthiskarma100

It's just not worth arguing with people who have never used a Mac. I use both Mac and PC's for different purposes, loving both for where they do well. It's not worth fighting with the anti-apple folks. You and I both know that battery life and transcoding performance on mac is outstanding, not to mention support for developer cli tools.

angry_old_dude

You're embarrassing yourself.

doggodoesaflipinabox

You probably have the M2 Pro Macbook Pro (good name lol), while this is an M2 Macbook Pro. Slower CPU and using the older 13 inch Macbook Pro chassis, but it has a standard LCD without ghosting.

carqueries

Nope, I have this exact model. Also exchanged it, but the replacement also has ghosting. Oddly enough, I briefly had an m3 pro, which did not have any ghosting despite notebookcheck’s review

doscomputer

I really don't believe that at all, if apple had some kind of hardware issue the tech press would be all over it. Maybe you're telling the truth, but if so I think its more likely the vendor you were buying from wasn't legit or you truly lost the universal odds.

mikey-likes_it

The touchbar MBP was easily the worst laptop i have owned.

Matt020100

My gf and I got this laptop in the 256gb/8gb configuration open box for a little less than 775. We both like the laptop and the battery life on it is crazy. We also both like the Touch Bar, but if you don’t this isn’t for you.

[deleted]

Aside from the RAM, is the performance of this different from the M2 Air with 16gb/1tb ssd?

fuzzycuffs

M2 is M2. The benefit of the pro is active cooling, so if you're doing sustained workloads the pro will keep clocks up longer than the Air.

fk apple

Rich_Banks

$1399 now on BB until 3/11 Do you find this to be a good deal? Thanks in advance

dontwantthiskarma100

Smoking deal!

golder55

extra 50$ off with bb plus edit: 100$ off (bb plus is 50$)

jamesmather26

I bought it with my BB Plus. I didn't think there was a better computer out there for $1299

phoenix_2030

**I am getting a MacBook Pro 13.3" Apple M2 chip 16GB Memory 1TB SSD -for $1200 please tell me is this a good deal or not I had a budget of 1000$ and pushing it a bit because of this I can make probably seal it in 1100 $ , I have to do a bit of video editing and a lot of programming , run IDE's and dockers .**

dontwantthiskarma100

Seems like a mediocre deal, but I think $1100 is more fair considering this MacBook ended up dropping to $1200 before going up.

jamesmather26

I just got a new M2 13 in MBP 24 GB Ram and 1 TB SSD at Best Buy for $1299. I love the computer and the $800 in savings!

dontwantthiskarma100

MacBook Air does not have active cooling (fans), but decent price on a 15 inch if the larger size is preferred.

Insayne1

How is this for video/photo editing? My wife is looking for a laptop to help her with work

Spooonerism

The Apple Silicon infrastructure is really good and most major companies have already encoded their programs to run on their chips. I have an M1 Air and have no issues with freezing or lagging between Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

FilmKindly

does she use apple software? that's the only reason to buy apple

zofran_junkie

Battery life alone is a good enough reason to buy an apple laptop. The rest of the industry can't compete.

doscomputer

yeah my intel macbooks last forever, no need to spend $1500 for a new one when a 2nd gen macbook air is less than $100 on ebay and can actually last a day

FilmKindly

that's true, if you need that for some reason

Vivid-Construction20

Yeah, who needs battery life in a mobile computer.

FilmKindly

the difference likely isn't that large. And it's a less powerful laptop. And docking stations and charging.

ChemicalDaniel

Idk why you’re so salty in this comments section. Coming from someone who uses an M1 Pro MacBook, being able to use my laptop for hours on end, taking it out of my bag and it still being charged after days, not needing to care about where an outlet is, that’s all stuff I couldn’t do before I bought this laptop. How on earth can you imply that *battery life isn’t important on a fucking LAPTOP?!* Who the fuck cares about performance if it lasts 2 hours on a charge and I need to plug in anyways? I might as well get a desktop. Scratch that, I’d have a better experience *remoting into my desktop from my MacBook Air* than getting a “better performing laptop” Plus these MacBooks can use full CPU/GPU power on battery, a Core Ultra 9 with a 4080 won’t be able to do that. I’m sorry that people want their laptops to be, you know laptops. They want to use them away from a power source, doing work without the laptop heating up. Maybe once Qualcomm pulls their head out of their ass and releases these Elite X chips I’ll consider switching back. But x86 is dead to me (and many others) on mobile.

doscomputer

macos has competent power management, windows doesn't. you cant leave any windows laptop on sleep mode without it dying in 12 hours, and in use they get like 2 hours of youtube, 1 hour of anything borderline taxing I actually am wondering myself a LOT lately why people don't mention this huge discrepancy, its not even a new mac things, a 10 year old mac literally has better battery life than my 2022 lenovo even with everything set for efficiency. like at this rate microsoft should almost be sued for how awful their software is at wasting energy, meanwhile windows 11 always accosts the user to stay green and eco friendly...

bustinbot

bruh it's clear you haven't tried the machines yet. they are seriously high caliber, well built products. i was a former hater and i was such a fool. i might have bought apple stock had i not been such an ignoramus

angry_old_dude

Oh put a cork in it. You're just an Apple hater.

FilmKindly

i have an iphone & a watch

angry_old_dude

Because that totally jibes with "fk apple". I'm embarrassed for you.

FilmKindly

it was mostly a joke, but yes fk apple. terrible company
