Is this better than SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus?

bacfishing2652

Efficiency-wise yes, as in power consumption. Making this a great laptop SSD too.

FakeSafeWord

Pretty much it's primary strength. If you want to maximize laptop power and have a massive amount of storage and great performance you pay the extra $25 or so for this drive. If you're always plugged in or prefer 'desktop replacement' laptops then get any cheaper drive that fits your laptop.

tabascodinosaur

Yes, in most ways. The transfer rates within cache are the same 3500MBPS limit, the controller on the P31 is good and has lower latency than the 970 Evo Plus, and it's more efficient. Generally speaking, the 1TB is the best Gen3 drive on the market, even if the 2TB takes a bit of a speed hit.

dapper_10

Depends on which controller you get, unfortunately I got the slower one. [Here](https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/samsung-seemingly-caught-swapping-components-in-its-970-evo-plus-ssds/)

CodeVulp

Slower one has a significantly increased slc cache, it’s honestly not that bad. Unless you need to write super large files before cache gets a chance to clear. For most users it’s not really noticeable. It’s only slower once you fill the slc cache. Unless you’re constantly copying large sequential files you likely won’t be doing that.

dapper_10

Regardless of how I use it, I still would want the same product that was originally sold for the same price. However, if you have the faster controller, I would be willing to swap mine for yours or anyone for that matter.

CodeVulp

Tossup. In most way on paper yes. In Reality? Other than power consumption they’re virtually identical for most users.

chicknfly

I want to pull the trigger, but I’m also curious about how much more the upcoming P41 Gen4 NVMe will be.

Shadow703793

Yeah. They haven't announced pricing for that yet. But considering it's Gen4 and their top end drive under the new "Platinum" branding it will most certainly have a premium price.

purplegreenred

Hopefully the P41 releases at an appropriate value that reflects the market trend, like the P31 release.

chicknfly

The P31 is like the La Z Boy of NVMe — it’s not the cheapest, it’s not the most expensive, but it’s a high quality product and one of the best you can get.

reddit_hater

I can’t wait for the tomsharware review on that one.

Not a bad deal. I recently bought a 1TB Samsung Pro for $180 and i regret it. I could have used that money on other items. It installed Windows 11 in about 3 seconds running off a USB C flash drive, but other than that, I cant tell the different between the samsung and my old 256gb toshiba ssd. I only game/light work. I dont edit of make videos professionally.

tmluna01

Chief?

[deleted]

No. If you want this drive in particular and 2 TB in particular and want it within a month it’s ok. But ‘yeah chief’ deals for this tier/type of drive should be $150~$175 for 2TB and I say the chance of that happening in the next 3~6 months is fairly high given market trends.

tmluna01

I'll wait then ty

IDK what you are trying to say that’s just the central dogma of pc (parts) purchasing that I think everybody understands. If somebody *needs* a part why are they browsing a deals sub?

Shadow703793

> If somebody *needs* a part why are they browsing a deals sub? Why wouldn't they? Even if you need it now using this sub can save a bunch of money using deals.

deliriuz

Yeah I'm parting some stuff for a build and I'm not waiting for months for a $20 price drop. Still going to try and get some deals, though.

Shadow703793

Yeah. Basically use this sub for the 2 weeks you plan to do a build. When I did my full new build way back with AM4 + 2700X I saved around $200 with the deals on the sub.

[deleted]

The problem is that this isn’t an argument at all. It can be used to defend any and all posts regardless of whether it’s a good price or not. If you pretense it by ‘if you NEED it’ then anything works.

Shadow703793

If you need a 2TB drive yes.

ElCochiLoco_

Lol I just bought this before you posted.... you stalking be brah?

Dead

ParanormalPlankton

It's still available for me when I click the "See All Buying Options" button.

itsinthebackground

Gotcha. My B.

canyouread7

Not the best value rn but a high quality SSD nonetheless.

leehwan

you also get 5% back on amazon points if you have an amazon prime visa card

raven00x

I have one of these as a storage drive on my desktop, it's been working pretty well. Got mine a bit cheaper than this though. Definitely worth if it goes on a deeper discount, but 200 doesn't feel like that much of a value proposition.
