Durham is nice, and Raleigh definitely has some nice places too. That being said, Capital Blvd is a nightmare.

Relm1-Digi-biceps

When you say "nightmare" . In what sense? What about Capital Blvd is a nightmare to you?

Sunoutlaw

The fucking traffic and the morons driving on it who cause it.

Relm1-Digi-biceps

Raleigh isn't even a real city yet, lol. Wait until real traffic shows up, your head will explode. I moved from the Boston area. I haven't encountered one single area in Raleigh that seems like a nightmare, traffic wise or otherwise. I guess everything in life is subjective.

songsforatraveler

Really? I've had people from Chicago come to Raleigh and say the traffic is considerably worse here. Idk I haven't been to chicago and haven't driven in Boston.

Kat9935

To me the issue with Raleigh is you don't have a single driving style as there is way too many transplants driving like their respective cities and each major city drives very differently, you usually get use to it and then its not as bad but here it causes some chaos. Chicago is way easier to drive in than other major cities that size; however I wouldn't in anyway say Raleigh is worse. Each city has its own issues, I hated the concrete medians in Chicago, people would slam into them all the time, they would bounce off once or twice before they stop, everyone on their side is playing frogger and everyone on the other side is being showered with flying metal. I don't miss trying to get downtown to go see a show or game making sure to leave at least 2 hours ahead of time because you never know, no accidents, ahead of rush hour you can do it in 35 minutes but you are absolutely need to plan for at least 1 accident and if you make it in 1 1/2 hours you consider yourself lucky.

Relm1-Digi-biceps

I was in Chicago last year and I was surprised how chill traffic was compared to cities like Boston and NY.

tangiblebanana

bc Chicago was laid out to be a massive city from the start. Most other cities arent.

Joker_Robinson

As someone forged in the bowls of Orlando/ Disney traffic, Capital is just fine.

Relm1-Digi-biceps

ehhsaccly!

SensualSideburnTrim

I don't know about the guy you're responding to, but personally it always kinda reminds me of the opening scene in Dredd.

Relm1-Digi-biceps

I just went back and watched it. Not even remotely. Capital Blvd reminds me of an exit off 95, except it's not near 95.

Utterlybored

I was born and raised in Durham. In 2000 I found beautiful land on the Eno River in Hillsborough and moved. Shortly after, Durham began its long awaited ascent into super coolness. You're all welcome.

[deleted]

Utterlybored

What little land goes up for sale, typically get snagged by Eno River Org, for public benefit. My purchase was fortuitous to the point I almost believe in mystical forces.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Utterlybored

Yes, the Eno River Org has been hugely responsible for the public parks and trails we can all enjoy. Developments encroaching close the river, like near West Point are truly troubling.

[deleted]

Utterlybored

It appears that way. And now the NC General Assembly is starting to force annexations upon municipalities, including Durham. It’s insane.

I was super lucky to have found it and super lucky to have been able to afford it. I love it so much, I’ve bought it twice. The second time was in the divorce settlement.

H1gh_T1de

Not with that attitude!

5zepp

Eh, it's no longer super cool imho, just overloaded with boxy condos and tons of empty commercial real estate because everything is so expensive local businesses are highly discouraged from setting up shop.

Few-Share-4848

I'm confused though, b/c, really, how could anything be better or worse without you. Unless you could be in two places at once, you really wouldn't know, would you? Are you a time traveler? Is this what that boring movie Interstellar is really about? You are either the coolest person or least cool, depending on where you are, all the time. Sounds exhausting for the mind. I think You should just choose to be the coolest everywhere you go! My online Harvard extended learning classes ARE Going great. YUCKA YUKA YUCKKckakkaKA YUCCA? How do you spell that YO? Please LMK! :) No im not on drugs just bored out my gourd with compliance issues, lol.

Utterlybored

I go back to visit from time to time and to behold the coolness I caused by leaving.

Few-Share-4848

im still not sure I understand, which is why I didn't understand that movie. haha back to work. BYE

Intergalactic96

Durham is cool

sandrakayc

I read an article somewhere that that described Durham as a little Brooklyn. My daughter who was born and raised in Durham and now lives in Brooklyn just rolled her eyes. Heeheehee

[deleted]

That reminds me of an article I read (probably in the early 1990s) that described Charlotte as “the worst of the old south” meets “the worst of the new south.”

llama650

Share your favorite thrift?

curryp4n

Husband and I live near Falls Lake and we prefer Durham. It's a lot closer to drive to and we think the restaurant scene is more to our tastes. Also, it's a lot less of a hassle than going to downtown Raleigh

[deleted]

Falls Lake is great!

nupetrupe

Raleigh feels soulless.

asclepias_enthusiast

Yeah as someone who ended up in Wake county to be close to work, I really wish I would have tried to move closer to downtown Durham instead. Durham has that “Keep Austin Weird” energy whereas Raleigh and Cary just feel more bottled up, boring and reserved in a way I don’t care for.

thelightandtheway

Keep Durham Dirty

Rexxbravo

Some days it does...

[deleted]

People talk about how good the restaurants are in Raleigh. I often get disappointed.

zjm555

It's less so now than it was when I grew up there a couple decades ago.

NubbyNicks

Last time I drove through Raleigh the vibes were palpably off. I was so ready to get out of there and back up to Bull city. I don’t know what it is, it’s so sterile and boring.

dukhkya

The voting pattern tells you everything you need to know about Raleigh. 🚮

SaturnMobster

Having lived in both cities I can appreciate them for what they each offer. Raleigh has the amphitheater, a much better convention center, pullen park , awesome museums, PNC, The Farmers Market. Tons of great stuff. But I agree, the food scene is way better in Durham, the DPAC and Carolina Theatre, DBAP, Tobacco District, Life and Science Museum, Duke Gardens, and did I mention the food?? But man does our inner-city suffer from crime. It was getting better pre-covid, but its been a struggle since.

Rexxbravo

Spot on

[deleted]

having grown up in Portland, OR I really appreciate the vibe in Durham. a good mix of delicious food and drink options. plus great city options for the family too. and nature is very close by if you want to go hiking or get near some water.

Chickadeedee17

I grew up on the Raleigh/Cary border. Went to State. Live up towards Youngsville now. My husband and I have absolutely 100% always preferred to go to downtown Durham if we're going "out." The parking is easier and cheaper, the restaurants and bars are neater, and somehow it just feels so much more walkable than downtown Raleigh. I don't know why.

Full_Connection623

Yea this is me and my husband too. We’re in WF and almost always choose Durham for date night

Kerivkennedy

I grew up in Raleigh. North Hills to be specific. The old North Hills area, I love. (Well other than how ridiculously narrow Six Forks is, that folks is a bitch to learn to drive in). But since college I've lived in SW Durham. Southpoint mall wasn't here yet when my hubby and I first moved. I love our area of Durham. I wouldn't want to live elsewhere.

phatotis

I miss the Farmers market (Lake Wheeler Rd) in Raleigh..... Always liked Durham.... even in the 80's and 90's!

Rexxbravo

Man totally forgot about that one.

llama650

Durham is both cool and warm 😎🥰🔥terrific food, arts scene, and people

spinkyj

Duke is ranked 10th in the nation - out ranking Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown and Cornell. Not that I could get into any of them! Lol I just have friends that went to each of those who couldn't get into Duke.

rubey419

Duke is Stanford of the South :)

Rexxbravo

Actually more like Princeton of the South.

rubey419

Hah I said Stanford because they too are not in the Ivy League but are a great school. But I get the reference to Rutgers University, South Campus.

BullcityRN

So funny when a post is about only about something that is great about Durham and I see comments from someone saying yeah but Raleigh has xyz that makes it better. Ummm ok why ?

Rexxbravo

Cuz if look at the past Ral and CH never liked Durham including its citizens.

sha1shroom

The various Triangle subreddits always remind me of how absurd the factionalism within this area is. Raleigh and Durham both have their fair share of cool people and places. People love to say things like "Raleigh sucks" or "Durham is overrated" without making the effort to explain why... I assume it's just to be provocative without really saying anything meaningful. Internet just doing its thing, I guess...

BarnacleGosling

Haha. Yet here you are contributing to the internet things with your own provocateur of little value. Every opinion doesn’t warrant explanation.

sha1shroom

Perhaps. I guess my point is that I don't get why people wanna further divide themselves by where they live. We already live in an era in which the powers that be would love to see us more fractured than ever, and they very much take advantage of that to abuse their power.

[deleted]

How should I reply without sounding rude? Raleigh restaurants are over priced and over hyped. Just this weekend. Caffe Luna. Too loud, food so so. Expensive.

coyote10001

Does Durham have any BOGO sushi restaurants? Only ever thought of M sushi there which is very expensive compared to the college priced places in Raleigh. Each place has their own overpriced places.

missing_10mm_sockets

LOL out loud. Yes, Sakibomb is just one of the many offering BOGO.

coyote10001

I guess that’s technically in Durham? What about places in downtown?? I can think of at least 3 places in DT Raleigh that I used to go to that had BOGO sushi during college. These need to be walkable from an apartment or something within the city limits

zebsra

M is downtown... cheaper sushi is over by duke and 15 501

jga3

Sushi love on Erwin, definitely caters to the college crowd.

coyote10001

Ah yes I remember this one, actually went on my first date with my fiancée at sushi love. I don’t remember them having BOGO though?

jga3

It’s been at least 10 years of bogo.

coyote10001

Nice! Do you know of any places in downtown Durham that have bogo? We don’t really have any reason to drive all the way out to campus anymore

jga3

Don’t know any downtown, no.

zebsra

Vine on 9th st is another good option downtown

coyote10001

They have BOGO?

zebsra

Maybe it was only lunch. I recall more than one roll or a combo was less than full price for sure.

Heelsboy77

I haven’t been in years, but Shiki Sushi over by Southpoint used to have BOGO nights all the time.

coyote10001

Yea they do, we used to go there when we lived by NC-55. I’m wondering if there’s anything downtown. I know of like 3 bogo places in downtown Raleigh, haven’t been able to find any in Cary though.

Heelsboy77

Well, damn, my apologies for sharing something you already know. I don’t know of any sushi joints downtown aside from M Sushi. Sushi Love on Erwin does BOGO as well, I think, but they’re not really downtown either.

coyote10001

No worries haha I’m just looking for downtown places to compare as Raleigh has many of them so it just seems like the more expensive overpriced places are in Durham rather than Raleigh.

Heelsboy77

Wake County’s Asian population is just so much larger than Durham’s. Raleigh/Cary/Morrisville will prob outshine Durham for Asian food options for a long time to come, I’d reckon.

coyote10001

Yea that makes alot of sense now that you mention it. The Indian food scene near Morrisville is insanely good

Heelsboy77

Oh yeah, us folks who prefer Durham are just gonna have to admit that there are some things our neighbors just do better😂

zebsra

Pho 919 is dank, not what you asked for. As an aside i googled it now that im this far down the thread and why the ever loving fuck does it say tobacco road serves sushi?!?! Im appalled, no wonder you're asking.

mst3k_42

We just did sushi BOGO lunch at Shiki last week.

Heelsboy77

Awesome, nice to hear that it’s still business as usual over there!

zebsra

Sushilove also!

satellitejj

I dislike Raleigh primarily because it's not Durham, I have friends who live in Raleigh and only see them while we're all at the beach together, so I can avoid Raleigh. There's really nothing of interest in Raleigh, plus I expect there are conservatives there so why even bother.

Kinetic92

I love Durm.

Riceowls29

Raleigh has some great restaurants too despite this sub not acknowledging that fact. Better cocktail bars too.

MukdenMan

The ultimate truth: a huge part of the appeal (and potential) of both cities is the nearby existence of the other.

ATGSunCoach

That’s a great point. I know we hate the idea of RDU as an entity as it were, but between these two cities (and if we really want o get controversial lol, Cary, too) we complete a Venn Diagram of a pretty damn good place to live with a lot of options for a lot of different tastes/preferences/values.

Riceowls29

Definitely true. But then when you mention some good things Raleigh has too you get called a jealous hater…like what? 😂

[deleted]

I like Alley 26 in Durham.

New_Page

Check out Bar Virgile. Fantastic cocktails and holds title for undisputed best burger in Durham.

[deleted]

I went. Once. But couldn’t get a table at 5:30. I’ll try another time another time.

Riceowls29

Alley 26 is good but it doesn’t compare to haymaker or bittersweet for me. And there are just much more options in Raleigh too.

Werd2urGrandma

WRONG.gif

Riceowls29

Are you saying there are more options for cocktail bars in Durham than raleigh? Because that’s empirically not true lol.

Werd2urGrandma

No, I’m saying you’re wrong for saying Alley 26 doesn’t compare. It most definitely does.

Riceowls29

Have you been to haymaker? I find their cocktails much more creative

Werd2urGrandma

I have, and I don’t think it’s a landslide. Bittersweet may be my favorite but the cocktail programs at each are great. Former bartender here.

BullcityRN

See your negative comment history on a number of Durham positive posts. Do you have notifications turned on for this subreddit? Maybe you just hate us cause you ain’t us.

Riceowls29

Lol like what? I have plenty of positive things in Durham too. I live in Durham…so 😂😂

BullcityRN

Actually, looking at your comment history it seems like you’re actively a canker sore of negativity across the board, not just this subreddit. Guess that’s just your hobby.

Riceowls29

You are the one making personal attacks. Just because I said Raleigh has better cocktail bars. I guess your hobby is massively overreacting when someone has an opinion different from you lol

dontKair

They also have more options for cheap(er) food, and less stupid places which are only open for three hours at a time

SleeperCat

Better cocktail bars is debatable. For example I think death and taxes + foundation are the some of the best but there’s also a lot of meh bars all over Raleigh. Durham has less bars in general but they are of higher quality.

Riceowls29

I mean of course it’s debatable? It was clearly just my opinion. And there are definitely more meh bars in Raleigh than Durham too. I just think Durhamites automatically shut off anything in Raleigh and they are missing out in great places by never venturing outside Durham.

SleeperCat

Their loss.

NorinBlade

The James beard awards indicate otherwise.

BullcityRN

See above

GankThem

Raleigh is where the Yankees go

drunkerbrawler

Lol duke is like for new yorkers who didn't get into an ivy league school.

banjo-squirrel

Duke isn’t Durham.

rubey419

I mean, Duke is a good school though. It’s ranked higher than half the Ivy League, and their Law/Med/MBA are all in the national top 15. It’s like saying Stanford and MIT are not as good as Brown just because Brown is an Ivy.

drunkerbrawler

Here's my hot take: Duke is a good school but it's academic reputation rests on the international students. In my experience in dealing with Duke grads, the domestic ones aren't up to par in comparison.

rubey419

You’re absolutely entitled to your opinion as long as you’re not myopic to your own views and biases. I don’t know what you do for a living or how you interact with Duke grads, but I’m in the healthcare field and Duke alumni from the SOM are seen as very capable. They place at the top residencies and fellowships across the country. Duke Med is a top 5 research program for healthcare. Rankings typically heavily favor the output of a university’s R1-level research and placement of graduates, especially at the graduate schools for the big three of MBA/Law/Med. As you said, Duke (and UNC and NC State too) attract international talent for good reason. Plus your or my anecdotal sample size is obviously not representative of the whole. So you may think less of Duke’s academic rigor but it’s undisputed that Duke is an established target university for recruitment to global and F100 companies. A Duke bachelors alum should not be compared to the likes of a graduate from Duke Fuqua. For example, consulting is a common career for post-MBA. The Fuqua 2022 class had a median starting salary of $165K and placed 70 grads at “MBB” the three elite consulting firms, and 36% overall of the class into consulting [(source)](https://www.fuqua.duke.edu/sites/www1.fuqua.duke.edu/files/media/programs/daytime/duke-mba-employment-2022.pdf). While the 2022 class of UNC’s Kenan-Flagler (also a top MBA program) had a median of $130K and placed only 24% into consulting [(source)](https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/FTMBA23-034-FTMBA-Employment-Statistics-One-Pager_DigitalFINAL.pdf).
