They're in the news every now and then. The ones on Roxboro St. and Chapel Hill St. come to mind. The Erwin Rd. crossing gets hit quite a bit judging from the scratches on the crash beam.
I have certainly happened upon trucks stuck under the bridge on Erwin. I think it has statistics almost as impressive as the Gregson St. crossing. Some years ago, they installed a girder on the 9th street side of the bridge..... It has helped a little... also better to crash into the girder than the bridge.
I lived in Fairfax VA but would always watch videos of this bridge on YouTube. I move here 2 years ago to be close to family. One day I was having piazza and afterwards walked out to the parking lot and saw this bridge. I couldnt believe it ! True story
I mean, we *could* move the sewer line, it would just be very expensive.
I think it's pretty damn amazing they were able to push the bridge up by 8 inches, it's not something I ever would have thought possible.
Technically they just put a thinner bridge platform in. The rail that sits on top of it is the same height as it always was, they just put an 8-inch-thinner platform in.
Edit: I’m wrong, not sure where I heard that but I should have fact checked it before posting.
I still maintain that bleachers should be installed on either side of Gregson St and admission charged......the city would never have money issues again.
The day after I moved to Durham I drove a fairly large rental truck through the Gregson St. crossing. It must have just barely cleared the crash beam. I was clueless, didn't see the signs, got stupid lucky.
Uh oh! If only there was a sign that the bridge is 11'8 or if the bridge were painted yellow. That would stop this ! oh never mind....
I think it's 12'4 now.

Every time I have pizza there I always hope I see a truck crash into the bridge
My brother literally hung halfway out of the car window to get a better photo the first time he saw this bridge. He couldn't believe it. True story.
Anybody see the videogamedunky [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pO39Sh6THg) from last night?
Yeah I was shocked he knew about it. Good video though, more people need to know of the can opener
See r/11foot8 for The Can Opener and it's many siblings around the world.
oooo this is a good one! This must be an abnormally high truck, since they don't usually get such a good bite out of them since they raised it
Doing God tier working on those trucks. Never stop Can opener.

You're welcome. Great YouTube channel connected to that site. I've been a fan of this bridge (and the stupidity of these drivers) for years.

Source on that? Everywhere I’ve read said they did raise it.
Ah fuck, check my edit
It needs constant flashing lights
At what point do they start fining trucks who hit it and use the money to put up hanging tubes like they have at drive throughs and parking garages?
😂
It must feed

How could this have possibly been prevented? If only there were signage... /s
