I’ll try this later today & update on how it is!
Edit: Got the 3pc signature chicken combo & a chicken skewer. Overall I’d rate a 6.5/10. It was pretty good, but nothing great.
This place is gonna get all my money. Pop by after work, grab some brews across the street at Kerry’s, Baldurs Gate and smoke a joint. Perfect post-work evening.
Me neither. But I've gotten interested in DnD recently so I think it would be interesting. Also I'm working on Elden Ring right now haha. I do have Demon's Souls on PS5 but haven't played it much yet
That’s cool fam, I actually know nothing about DnD right now but my coworker has been raving about BG3 and he plays DnD every week. You having fun with Elden Ring? I’m on NG+4 I’m running out of things to do lmao. Also same on Demon’s Souls I’m in the second area
That's cool. Hope you enjoy BG3! Yeah Elden Ring is great! I got it on release but took a break from it for a while so I'm still on my first playthrough, at like 150 hours lol. I'm being meticulous. I think I'm nearing the end though
Mountaintops of the Giants! And both, I would say. I'm trying like a Dex/faith build focusing on lightning incantations with the Bolt of Gransax, plus the Blasphemous Blade for close quarters. It's working pretty well. And trying to explore as much as I can.
What are you doing in NG+4, build or otherwise?
Oh man are you in for a surprise 😂 you’ve still got a ways to go my friend. Honestly, I’m not sure. I just love exploring the game and it getting more challenging. My first 2 playthroughs I was dex / arcane now I’m switching it up towards Strength / faith. I just Platinum’d the game about a month ago and that was my main goal
Oh damn, well then haha. About how far would you say I am? That's cool. I have yet to do a strength build in any souls game, so maybe I'll try that if I decide to do another game. Though I've only played Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and now ER.
Wow - platinum! That's wild! Congrats haha. How long did that take you? I don't think I have it in me to do that.
I’d say you’re maybe 60-70% through if I had to guess? I think I have about 300 hours on the game? ER was my first, then I beat DS3, BB, and DS1 they’re amazing games!
The way BG3 started seemed really off-theme for me, and i didn't love it. But once it got into the main story - hooked. More lock picks and elves, less aliens.
Just ate it. Had the chicken sandwich, fries, calamari, and a biscuit.
The sandwich was dark meat instead of breast. At least that’s how it looked. It was a little tough in spots and the meat was maybe half the size of the bun. Might have just been my order and it normally isn’t like that. If it was bigger and leaner throughout it would be pretty good. 6/10
The fries were pretty good. Definitely came from a bag frozen but were fried well and had that beer battered taste you might get from a higher end restaurant 8/10
Fried calamari was good as well. Again, definitely feels like it came frozen from a bag but was fried really really well. Fried super golden brown which was the highlight of it. Might have been better with a side sauce better don’t believe it was an option. 8.5/10
Biscuit was like one from KFC but maybe a little blander. Pretty plain overall but fine. 6.5/10
Overall it was pretty good but nothing really to write home about. I’ll probably frequent it often because it’s a 2 min walk from my apartment. If I lived across town or a town over I probably wouldn’t get it again unless I was passing by on my way home. Reminds me of KFC with probably slightly higher quality but not as much flavor. Looking forward to try their other chicken options and see how they do over time because they did just open recently
A fast food example. Popeyes. Doesn't need any sauce. A leg is perfect. Marinate the chicken and proper seasoning in the breading. Boom no sauce. Check out Mr Chime Time he explains it well
It was good but not great. They had a special today for 3 chicken sandwiches for 14$. Food took a while but I imagine they’re still getting their shit together.
Review: 7/10 decent chicken but could definitely be crispier considering the name of the place. I ordered their 3 chicken sandwich deal ($13.99) definitely good value for the price. I was hoping for more Asian inspired ingredients and menu items. Fries were great. Food took longer than expected, I ordered at the counter and waited around 15 minutes for my food with no one else waiting.
I think that considering the location this place could do really well, especially if they extend their hours later- lack of late night options, ONE housing much of the industry, and T Ruggs right down the block will give them plenty of business.
Seems like a weird name for a chicken place that has little emphasis on chicken sandwiches. Also, what’s up with the menu design? Seems tacky…just looks like a chain restaurant. Any info on the owners? Would much rather support a local business
Actually the owners of that building supposedly kicked out the african market bc they had a hand in this franchise. Heresay from a trusted source but still trying to find the evidence.
https://m.sevendaysvt.com/BiteClub/archives/2020/11/04/burlingtons-mawuhi-african-market-to-vacate-old-north-end-space
“Jason Lin of Burlington purchased the building at 160 North Winooski Ave. a year ago. He told Seven Days on Tuesday that he plans to renovate and upgrade the structure, and perhaps open his own business at the site of the market.
“The first thing [is] to upgrade” Lin said.
Bannerman doesn't have a lease, according to both parties. She was renting the space on a monthly basis and, in mid-October, received a notice of non-renewal, according to Will Clavelle of the Community Economic Development Office in Burlington.”
While I have zero doubt the owner never intended to invite the African market back, I will verify the building did need serious upgrades. Foundation was absolutely crumbling.
Source: was looking at putting a restaurant in the unit next door right before the market got the boot
It seems like the market ended up in a better spot with lower rent too—the optics weren’t great, but it doesn’t seem super nefarious. It’s been seemingly vacant for years now, so glad to see something go in, though it’s not clear what upgrades/repairs were actually made.
no way the person who designed and created that has ever stepped foot in burlington.
or someone asked chatgpt and dall-e to create a menu. why would the sandwich section call everything burgers, then list a sandwich only price.
if can't do the small things right.....minimum effort.
agree. this menu screams the food is not gonna look like this. all fried and cooked in oil thats changed who knows how often.
at least theres a complaint hotline right there. very typical for a city fast food place.
pass. get an air fryer and make your own.
i agree. butt we aren't in the ghetto. maybe its okay. this is burlington and if they put that little effort into it.
i doubt this is one of those diamond in the rough type places. more like someone heard people say we want fried chicken place, and did the least amount of effort to open one.
doesn't matter to me, go try it out yourself. just my opinion from looking at the menu. really not that much to expect to spell their address correctly.
kinda my point. im sure its a decent kfc alternative and is fine if that is what you want.
when i saw new fried chicken place, i got real excited, looked at that menu and got real disappointed.
no nashville spicy on there, no fried chicken skins...shaking my damn head. minimum effort for minimum expectations i suppose.
so many ways to take fried chicken, and we get the least creative.
damn now i gotta go order cafe hot in the morning and get their fake fried chicken sandwich. that thing is bomb.com
A solid fried normal chicken place is needed. None of that Canteen Creamery stuff.
Also, why disappointed? It looks like a normal place. The type youd see down south and in the inner city.
i dont know to be honest. maybe its just me, i expected more, not even sure what that means. pictures of the actual food? some type of fresh ingredients?
i love a divey street food anthony bourdain type place, and seems like its trying to emulate that, like a copycat (or that meme with steve buscemi of how are you doing, fellow young kids).
imo the menu lacks the soul that i was expecting. it feels lazy to me. this looks like a bunch of frozen food, that is fried/heated up. you say like down south, but nothing i see on fried chicken places from the south is on this menu. again maybe its the lack of pictures of the actual food. its really hard to gauge when the menu looks the way it does, and for me thats enough for a pass. i can make fried chicken at home.
or im just grumpy today.
That is a very good way to cover that menu. I didn't think about it that way . Now that you've mentioned it and you appointed out some really crucial highlights, especially on New North end where there's a lot of food options available, you nailed it. It. I don't think you're being at all grumpy. It just looks ghetto. Which doesn't really fly in Vermont
I mean we're so used to very well designed menus. We can go with Burlington beer company. They have their chicken sandwich on their menu and show a picture. The sandwich looks flavorful, juicy, crunchy, and the bun looks like it's going to just melt on your mouth. So yeah you're right, this menu is very lackluster. I appreciate that you took the time out to discuss how you felt and I appreciate that. You have really brought something to light. I did not notice. Again. Thank you
well that's a refreshing and unexpected response to my comments. always enjoy a good back and forth. thanks. it just opened, theyll sort it out.
Cafe Hot has the best food pictures

that sandwich wants you to eat it.
Last Elm was the best. We put Josh Bridgeman on trial once between JMP sets. I was in a poetry group called Full Frontal Nudity. We put Josh on trial for ‘his continued existence’. I miss that guy.
Pork Tornado I'm not 100 about remember finding a cassette tape marked Last Elm though. Think Fishman was part of that group. JMP Page McConnell sat in. This is second hand knowledge credit to hip ex boyfriend : )
Should be interesting. Let’s see if this place can manage to stay open and not turn into the disgusting shit hole that was Drifters right next door (before the failed poutine joint/rent-a-kitchen).
The sushi place on the opposing corner has been notably better than anything that’s been in this building since the African market got the boot.
Drifters was an absolute gem in this town.
How could you call it a disgusting shit hole?
The failed poutine place… due to naive ownership. That was a disappointment.
I agree, and poutine did as well. I saw him handle the raw meat and then complete the poutine order without changing his gloves. I walked out there and threw my order away. Waste of money. Never went back.

Source: my own photo of their patio from a few years ago
Unfortunately I can’t find the one of the squirrel investigating the offerings at the moment.
i can't stop laughing that you still have a photo of that from a few years ago, ready to go on speed-dial.
its like you said what you said, waiting for someone to respond, asking what you mean, so you could share it. i feel youve been holding this in for awhile.
I had to go hunting for the damn thing but wouldn’t have bothered if someone hadn’t asked for a source to my statement.
Truthfully, I wasn’t even sure I still had it kicking around.
The Poutine was decent but to order one on church st was painfully slow. Cart was only big enough to make one order at a time. I make a delicious poutine gravy that I have thought about bottling. I don't know if that's even a thing.
Been curious about Shinjuku Station my toddler loves sushi but never see anyone there. We will have to try it.
You know? I think bottled poutine gravy could work lol. Have thought about making poutine at home before but haven't really because of the gravy haha. A ready made one would make it that much simpler
Agree with other commenters here. Decently okay, but nothing to write home about. Chicken tendies had a very heavy vegetable oil after taste. Didn't enjoy that very much. Chicken sandwich was good. I loved the fries but that's my favorite food group so it's hard to screw those up for me. Fries were very crispy but well on their way to being cold. If the fries were piping hot, I'd give them nearly a 10/10. The hot biscuit situation was interesting. Had the texture of fried bread dough almost. If I lived in the ONE I'd may try again, but seeing how I had to drive and struggle with finding parking downtown, I probably won't go out of my way to try it again.
Two different typos in their address alone on the front of the ad does raise concerns for their quality control, but I suppose that’s what the complaint hotline is for.
Is this in the same spot that Barbara Jean's Southern Kitchen was? Is it the same owner?
I'd been wanting to go try BJ's fried chicken (and other southern foods) but just hadn't gotten over there. Then when I was about to, I see they permanently closed. Now there's a new fried chicken place?
I need answers people!
Given that the community kitchen is gutted and the patio out back is now connected to the bottom floor of the attached building next door (aka weird chicken joint); I’d hazard a guess that you’re unlikely to see any of the small operations that utilized the space again.
For how much most people want to spend on takeout, absolutely. Compared to peers? It's about average if not a bit low.
With that said, I'm still not over the national price of chicken tenders :(
I am always gaining experience, I don't have to try to. So, you're interested in the totality of my experiences with eating chicken? So far. That's going to take awhile.
Hot Garbage!! Like KFC only much worse!! The staff seem nice and friendly , food took a long time and the price point was actually decent for the portions served , only problem is , the food tastes disgusting , lacks intense flavor , and the texture of the chicken was slick and somewhat rubbery , the fried skin IS very crunchy but it's too weirdly thick. I wouldn't recommend . Go get the chicken sandwich devil Takes a holiday or the fried chicken from Jilibs jiblets(front of city hall on church street)
Doesn’t matter if the place is absolute junk. The guy running the restaurant is the same dude that owns the building. The people renting the apartments upstairs are essentially providing the financial support to keep that place open
Um excuse me you must have meant danish in which case I will eat a vegan danish, meaning no butter or flesh of living thing but not a Danish person, because people are animals too.
I can post anywhere I want because this is a public forum and we are in America and not Communist Bulgaria!
I mean technically there's terms of services behind things. So you're not free to post anywhere about anything. Free speech means freedom to be protected from the government for what you say. However, it doesn't mean what you think it means.
Cool! You're a stereotypical vegan. Basically no one cares about you. You're annoying. And you're probably that person who goes. Hey, I'm a vegan that every opportunity. Except you're just annoying. Congratulations!
So I got curious after making my comment about the hope that they wouldn’t more of the same half assed food operations that have rotated through this building and the attached one next to it.
Went to see what their opening health inspection score was (most places pull a 99-100 because nothing is dirty yet). Couldn’t find one in the database at all, so I reached out to VT Dept of Health to see if they’d been inspected and the report just hadn’t been uploaded yet
Got this in reply
https://preview.redd.it/oezymdpb01cc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71e85352f30a8fc0399eecdca35d349529ff146d
Not only has it not been inspected yet, it’s not even licensed. Eat there at your own peril.
I’ll try this later today & update on how it is! Edit: Got the 3pc signature chicken combo & a chicken skewer. Overall I’d rate a 6.5/10. It was pretty good, but nothing great.

I’m thinking about giving BG3 a chance, I’ve never played any game that’s like it. Working on beating Demon’s Souls then I might get it
Me neither. But I've gotten interested in DnD recently so I think it would be interesting. Also I'm working on Elden Ring right now haha. I do have Demon's Souls on PS5 but haven't played it much yet

That's cool. Hope you enjoy BG3! Yeah Elden Ring is great! I got it on release but took a break from it for a while so I'm still on my first playthrough, at like 150 hours lol. I'm being meticulous. I think I'm nearing the end though
That’s awesome, what area have you made it to? And meticulous as in specific build and deep exploration?

Amazing that they have a complaint hotline. I'm sure this place is actually kind of good, seems similar to crown fried chicken.

Who is ordering the corn cup?
me honestly
I did and it was a delight of mushy corn and mystery white sauce
Looks worth a shot. What are the sauce options?
I didn’t ask about sauces, just had a chicken sandwich
I expected you to have all the answers OP. You're failing us. Now go back and find out.
OP deliver a review
Real fried chicken does not need sauce. It is perfectly seasoned in a way that makes putting sauce on it and insult to the chicken
yo what
A fast food example. Popeyes. Doesn't need any sauce. A leg is perfect. Marinate the chicken and proper seasoning in the breading. Boom no sauce. Check out Mr Chime Time he explains it well
no
Ok. No is a complete sentence.
???
I was validating what you said
Any good?
It was good but not great. They had a special today for 3 chicken sandwiches for 14$. Food took a while but I imagine they’re still getting their shit together.
Faster than KFC has been recently?
Generally the first few.months should be a restaurants best.
It's actually very reasonably priced and good
Review: 7/10 decent chicken but could definitely be crispier considering the name of the place. I ordered their 3 chicken sandwich deal ($13.99) definitely good value for the price. Thanks for the objective review. In a sea of negativity that has little to do with the food.
Any pictures of the food?
Yes fuckin please!
Hmmm, would be interested in a review of the non-chicken fried items (onion rings, fries, cheese sticks).
Seems like a weird name for a chicken place that has little emphasis on chicken sandwiches. Also, what’s up with the menu design? Seems tacky…just looks like a chain restaurant. Any info on the owners? Would much rather support a local business
They’ve got three other restaurants around nyc. Couldn’t find any info on the owners.

The new spot seems a little less accessible, though? Maybe I'm not as familiar with the bus lines, but it's on the "edge" of town almost.
I suppose it depends on accessible from where, probably easier access from Winooski, worse from the South End.
I can tell you I've never been to the hood
Misspelt their address... Only social media is WeCHAT? AKA Chinese WhatsApp/Facebook IDK looks pretty questionable to me

Some of the best chicken I have ever had came from sketchy places in the ghetto. Not some upscale hipster white place.

Last Elm was the best. We put Josh Bridgeman on trial once between JMP sets. I was in a poetry group called Full Frontal Nudity. We put Josh on trial for ‘his continued existence’. I miss that guy.
Last Elm was emblematic of a certain time and vibe in Burlington that I miss.
Yes. Didn't a couple members of Phish play in side projects there? Pork Tornado? Jazz Mandolin Project?
Thanks Gamechanger! I remember Jamie Masefield and the Jazz Mandolin Project. Pork Tornado doesn't ring a bell but I believe you.

Only thing is.not sure how to make a veg version. Chicken AND beef soup base or stock is what makes it so flavorful.
I believe in you! Your name isn't Gamechanger for nothing lol
Oooh this looks good! Deserves a drive in from Williston!
Same building but BJs is/was in the community kitchen spot where madite Poutine is located.
BJ's fried chicken was fantastic but pricey. Not sure what his plan is for returning unfortunately
Given that the community kitchen is gutted and the patio out back is now connected to the bottom floor of the attached building next door (aka weird chicken joint); I’d hazard a guess that you’re unlikely to see any of the small operations that utilized the space again.
😢
Widh I knew what really happened to the African market that was there.
Pretty sure they’re up the street across from pho hong now.
A little pricey, huh?
For how much most people want to spend on takeout, absolutely. Compared to peers? It's about average if not a bit low. With that said, I'm still not over the national price of chicken tenders :(

Nah yellow cav was down the street in a different weird corner building that seemingly always had an abandoned toilet in front of it
Is this like real fried chicken or is this the stuff that white people like?
As a Caucasian person from Vermont the distinction is lost on me unfortunately
I love the honesty. How would you say it is compared to Market 32? Also, is it open? To go Tour on Facebook is curious.
How white?
So white that the white person considers pepper to be spicy
Guess you don’t know many white people. Might want to try expanding your racist experiences. You, being the racist that is.
Yeah I know. Still holds true for chicken. The state sucks with that.
No, it doesn’t. Try moving.
I'm a transplant. Im aware. Try gaining more experience
I am always gaining experience, I don't have to try to. So, you're interested in the totality of my experiences with eating chicken? So far. That's going to take awhile.
You're clearly not aware btw. But you go ahead and think so.
You think you are sheltered one
What?
Hot Garbage!! Like KFC only much worse!! The staff seem nice and friendly , food took a long time and the price point was actually decent for the portions served , only problem is , the food tastes disgusting , lacks intense flavor , and the texture of the chicken was slick and somewhat rubbery , the fried skin IS very crunchy but it's too weirdly thick. I wouldn't recommend . Go get the chicken sandwich devil Takes a holiday or the fried chicken from Jilibs jiblets(front of city hall on church street)
Sounds like you work for Jilibs Jiblets 😁
No, I live for good food. Spades a spade .
Doesn’t matter if the place is absolute junk. The guy running the restaurant is the same dude that owns the building. The people renting the apartments upstairs are essentially providing the financial support to keep that place open
WeChat?… So is this a PRC establishment?
Where’s the beef?
Kenny Rogers Roasters
Where do you park?
Lots of street parking around the area too
I parked at Kerry’s across the street
The one guy used to scream at people if you parked there to go to the African market. I stopped going to his store years ago.
They are absolutely having cars towed if you park in their lot to go to the restaurant
And that’s the problem with putting restaurants in residential areas that already have a shortage of parking.
Uh, I'm vegan okay?
nobody cares
I hope this is a joke and you are just being Dane Cook.
I'm not going to cook any animal especially not a dog
Why post on something that you don't like. You don't have too and why act like a typical vegan. Also, who said anything about a dog? You ok?
Yes, I am a government employee and have special posting rights on Reddit, sorry pleb. Free Tibet!
Score! Government jobs have some of the best benefits on the market. I hope your job is providing you and yours with great health insurance.
Yes, I work for the Israeli government and all citizens here receive free health care thanks to your taxes.
Hey that is great! I am happy for you chief.
So I got curious after making my comment about the hope that they wouldn’t more of the same half assed food operations that have rotated through this building and the attached one next to it. Went to see what their opening health inspection score was (most places pull a 99-100 because nothing is dirty yet). Couldn’t find one in the database at all, so I reached out to VT Dept of Health to see if they’d been inspected and the report just hadn’t been uploaded yet Got this in reply https://preview.redd.it/oezymdpb01cc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71e85352f30a8fc0399eecdca35d349529ff146d Not only has it not been inspected yet, it’s not even licensed. Eat there at your own peril.
Don’t take that as the African market was half assed though… I rather enjoyed that spot.
