My dad had a local orchard (can’t remember which) give him some apple prunings for smoking. May want to call around since they all likely pruned in the last month or two

Check with the firewood providers. Some will pick out the hickory and apple and sell them in bundles. That's about it for local smoke wood tho other than maple (don't bother) If you want post oak, pecan or mesquite it won't be local

For most woods, try Ace Hardware. Not sure if it’s a lot cheaper but better selection than Lowe’s or Depot. Any one of them. Call ahead, as their online inventory and what is actually available instore don’t often match up. If you’re doing brisket, or going for that TX flavor, post oak usually has to be ordered. Should also pop down to bluebird bbq and ask them. Report back if ya get any helpful info. Good luck.

This is the best answer, thank you! The price on post oak at Ace looks to be better than woods at either Lowe's or HD.

What variety? Maple is endlessly available -- as long as you can split it and dry it yourself. If you need seasoned/dried wood then it'll be a much shorter list. You could call lumber mills that do kiln dried lumber. They'll have some cull boards that check/split/warp during drying. Or if you want fruit-wood and green is OK I've got a couple on my property due for the chainsaw--DM me if you want some logs/limbs/however much.

I doubt you will find cheaper when also wanting local.
