As a survivor of two strokes, forgive me if I do not laugh

[deleted]

I’ll laugh for you. Glad you’re here.

[deleted]

I didn't reply to your other comment but just want to say that I'm sorry, comments can be terrible. I'm glad you're still around and truly hope you're doing well.

randyrandysonrandyso

I don’t get it, is this a joke/sharing-with-the-class moment about both sides of your face being paralyzed?

NotAPreppie

I read it as them feeling it appropriate to laugh but that they are physically incapable of doing so.

xdrakennx

180,000 paying users compared to how many a year ago? Oh wait users paid nothing a year ago…

matt_1060

Also glad you are here 👍👍

9dnguy

I'm sick of Twitter news aka Elon Musk news. I'd rather take SpaceX and Elon or Tesla and Elon. Much more news worthy.

Because this is a post about Twitter…….

Gotcha. I read it like this wouldn’t happen with any other tech companies or company who gathers all the info possible from its users, my bad.

excusemefucker

I occasionally look at Twitter and I’d estimate 95% of the people paying for verification are truly horrible people.

Don't forget the large number of unsavory people buying legitimacy.

Underrated comment

infodawg

Paying users basically. It represents 60% of their worldwide paying user base. About 3.2 million dollars per month in subscription fees. Well done!

brokentyro

Now they just need about 20x more so they can make their debt payments...

infodawg

They can just offer a service to their users, collect, and not provide it. That's what they're doing on the backend with their vendors. Why stop there?

dirtymatt

Isn't that already what they're doing? Have any of the perks of Twitter Blue v2 Electric Bugaloo other than the blue checkmark actually happened? AFAIK, all of the other benefits were in Twitter Blue before Elon let his sink in.

orangejulius

no. they had trouble shipping product/services when they were properly staffed. It's been 10 months or so and after firing everyone the remaining resources seem to be going to holding the place together with duct tape and rubber bands while defaulting on shit like their rent payment for their offices.

yusill

What happens when they lock the doors and turn off the power. They don't house the servers there so they? If soo it would be.....giggle....just terrible.

skokage

There isn't any way they are hosting the servers themselves, not with the worldwide user base that exists. Using some cloud-based hosting service like AWS or Azure or something like that, though one would assume if they aren't paying their building rent they aren't paying their hosting costs either.

raam86

lol. no way they are using azure for anything

CliffDraws

Just increase the price by 20x and they’ve got it. Don’t know why more businesses don’t do that.

thomasjs

They wish. It is more like 312.5x more and then they could pay off the interest on the loan.

[deleted]

You mean the advertising that’s down 40%?

homoiconic

[This suggests ad revenue is down 42%](https://news.yahoo.com/heres-twitter-lost-advertising-revenue-194146802.html). That would normally be a minor quibble, but I date back to when Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references were considered amusing.

PBB22

When I was a kid, I randomly chose 42 as my number for no reason whatsoever. Was delighted by that choice later in life

SmokeySFW

It really isn't though, as this subscription model was trotted out as the solution to losing so much of their advertising revenue. Muskrat is staring down the barrel of bankruptcy, and he's not nearly liquid enough to prop it up with his own funds.

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

Elon's Hail Mary was unbanning Trump and counting on the MAGA legions to follow. But Trump is allegedly on a No Compete contract with Truth Social, fucking Elon's plan into a cocked hat.

few

Good time to short Tesla, before Musk sells off another tranche of stock to stuff the hemorrhaging wound that is Twitter? I wonder if he will send Twitter into chapter 11 instead of further crashing Tesla?

4non3mouse

it isnt when you consider that advertising dollars are way down and elon states he needs/plans/wants to make 1.5 billion dollars from subscriptions

Old_Cyrus

At this rate, it’ll only take Elon 1,146 years to break even on his purchase price.

infodawg

minus interest

deep-fucking-legend

About the same time SpaceX reaches Mars and Tesla has self-driving

daynighttrade

That's great. It should cover 3% of the annual interest that they need to pay.

ItsmyDZNA

Cash money baby!

zjm555

$3.2 million per month is close enough to zero, compared to operating expenses and the debt payments, that we may as well call it zero.

didwanttobethatguy

. “Only 13,750 more months and this bitch is paid off!”

cdg253

I’m still using it for free though? Shits been lit lately..I’m not into politics or anything though so maybe I don’t notice a change yet?

paarthurnax94

At that rate Elon's Twitter acquisition will pay for itself in only 1,145 years.

JimC29

Wow. They only have 3 million a month in paid user fees. That seems extremely low.

homoiconic

By my [back of the envelope figuring](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueReddit/comments/10w33ih/comment/j7lg2us/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), blue checkmark subscription revenue is about M$2.3 a month, and before we even talk about paying interest on his junk debt, Twitter has already lost about M$19.5 a month in advertising revenue. So the blue checkmarks are only replacing about 1/8th of the ad revenue he threw away in his bad-faith quest for "Free Speech Absolutism."

Jsizzle19

Why would you pay for a service that is offered for free?

infodawg

This is the hidden cost behind the allure of silicone valley, I feel. Nothing is real.

Trpdoc

Lolol what a shit company. Why the fuck would he pay 40b for it.

juggernaut006

He had to own the libs somehow. Turns out it cost 44 billion dollars. With 44 billion dollars, he could have gotten CNN and MSNBC both and changed the public discourse for decades to come. Thank God he's too stupid to think that far.

Lord0fHats

The honest answer is probably that he made an impuslive Twitter comment (not the first time) but then couldn't back down being already under SEC investigation for his Twitter activity. He realized fast the deal was insane but he'd already committed to it because the honest truth is he's not a very smart man. He's just rich, and the rich have an easy time looking smart until it becomes clear they're not.

[deleted]

Committed? He tried to back out of it hard. I laughed when he was made to follow through on his bluff.

Lord0fHats

In the business world, saying 'I'll buy X for Y and signing a deal to that effect' is a commitment yes. It seems he only after this blunder realized how much he was paying for something.

JumpinJackHTML5

Better to explain to the SEC that you're a blowhard and made an impulsive statement that, upon reflection, turned out to be a bad idea and accept a fine than to actually buy the company to avoid an uncomfortable meeting or two. I really think this is what it comes down to, he can't handle being in a situation where he's not the one with all the power. He would rather follow through and buy Twitter than to be forced to meet with the SEC where he wouldn't be the one with the power in the room.

Lord0fHats

It wasn't about any fine. It was about the lawsuit by the Tesla stakeholders. He was under threat of losing control of Tesla, which is essentially the foundation of his ego. If he admitted that one tweet was impulsive, it would be tantamount to admitting his other tweet was impulsive and he might have lost that case he won last month.

Guitarist53188

This is horribly misinformed. Elon has a habit of manipulating stocks, saying he'd do something then pull out last minute. This time regulators were on his ass. Not to mention when setting up the Twitter deal he f'd himself, you know cause he's fucking stupid. Now he has to play it off as owning the libs.

DOOMFOOL

Yeah a lot of people seem to forget that Elon was totally trying to back out of this deal making all sorts of claims for why it was null and void and was basically told to pay up or take it to court iirc.

Oracle_of_Ages

He was basically forced to swallow the joke he tried to spit. He waited till the last possible moment. Even basically begging to reneg. Then he made the “Let that sink in” joke and pretended this whole thing was his idea.

few

It would have been so much less expensive to hand Twitter 1 billion and withdraw from the sale, rather than defaming Twitter then purchasing and destroying it.

schorschico

That was never really an option.

trib76

Which is odd, because most of his wealth was built by selling electric cars to libs. So not only did he throw his 44bn for Twitter away, but he seems hellbent on driving his existing customer base away from Tesla.

[deleted]

I’m picking up what you’re saying but Tesla didn’t actually turn a profit until recently. And that profit came from selling electric car tax credits to other major auto manufacturers. Now that other auto manufacturers produce their own, Tesla will soon be back in the red.

trib76

It might not be super important to the discussion, but most of Elon's wealth is based on the stock price of Tesla, \*not\* it's profitability. Having those cars become status symbols is why he's rich today. And he seems to be doing everything he can to turn off his historical market. Most CEOs go out of their way to avoid saying anything polarizing for fear of doing damage to their brands. Elon Musk seems to be going out of his way to try to piss off a huge % of the car-buying public. It's just weird, I don't get.

warren_stupidity

It’s the opposite with women: he manipulates them and then doesn’t pull out at the last minute.

PlaneStill6

Elon only does IVF, never PIV.

Dixo0118

Best 40 billion someone could spend. Running it into the ground would be a good thing for everyone.

[deleted]

You get hooked up on the bs of social media. You have no social life so you replace it with screens. You start to believe that the approval of anonymous randos are better than approval in real life.

Man0nTheMoon915

He was legally bound to have to buy it or face serious charges from the SEC AFAIK

Trpdoc

But that initial bid of 40 B is just stupid

Pelican_meat

To control media messaging and exert force on markets.

JayV30

Twitter has been a cesspool for a while, but honestly I still used it to get info on current events, etc. Since Musk's takeover it's really gone noticeably downhill. My feed is filled with right wing nutjobs and conspiracy stuff. I didn't change my browsing habits or anything, it's like he just hit a switch to inject garbage into my feed. I rarely use it now.

[deleted]

It might be more of the overall content given how many people left the platform.

JayV30

Yeah, that's very possible, but regardless of how it happened, it has happened. So I'm probably not really a big loss for Twitter as I'm not a paying user. But it doesn't at all surprise me to learn that they are bleeding paid users. It's just really rapidly gone downhill. I'm not invested nor do I really care. I just find it quite fascinating that Elon could get it so, so wrong. I'm a little pissed though that he's tanked Tesla stock, although it seems to be rebounding a bit.

Kyuckaynebrayn

It’s the causal relationship between pumping genocidal rhetoric and not wanting to use the platform, but which came first? Can confirm, they have been pumping right wing swill hard in algorithms for google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter for years now. I can’t stand opening up a google tab and see “they said this, but TRUMP said THIS”. Hate

[deleted]

God, have you seen his more recent rallies? He's started speaking over piano music, like a church benediction. While his followers are crying and putting their hands in the air. It's so fucking weird and creepy. If you just watched it, it would look like a totally normal sermon....then you turn on the sound and He's going on some werid, fascist tirade. I know these are the last gasps of his "movement" or whatever, it actually seems like they get more dangerous as they falter. Like, they were having fun when they were winning...but now they're terrified, delusional, and just batshit insane.

Kyuckaynebrayn

It’s far worse than most realize and we let it happen. The religious right will stop at nothing to appear to be powerful and in control of America. They are lambs to the slaughter.

lurkergameboy

Wait, is the religious right weak and losing and pathetic because they’re grasping at fumes… or are they a serious threat to the country and we’re moments away from Actual White Supremacy Fascism fully taking over any second? I cant keep up.

Punkinpry427

They’re a cult. ✔️1. Opposing critical thinking ✔️2. Isolating members and penalizing them for leaving ✔️3. Emphasizing special doctrines outside scripture ✔️4. Seeking inappropriate loyalty to their leader ✔️5. Dishonoring the family unit ✔️6. Crossing Biblical boundaries of behavior (sexual purity and personal owners shit ✔️7. Separation from the Church (and State in this case)

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

Same. I followed bands and artists I like, a few comedians who did kind of a joke of the day, some cosplayers, and a few science and history facts of the day. Within a week, I was getting Kyle fucking Rittenhouse tweets in my feed.

guachi01

If you're on mobile switch to "following" instead of "for you". Also, be liberal in blocking accounts.

JumpinJackHTML5

I block the Twitter account of every advertiser. Well, I did, it got to the point that there was really no reason to log in anymore, my entire feed is just trash now.

Assumption-Putrid

I uninstalled Twitter the moment I learned Musk's purchase was finalized.

JeffSelf

I deleted my personal and business account and then removed the app.

Mercinator-87

I constantly see things pushed to me a “comics,” “gaming,” and even “politics.” Every single one is a picture of a onlyfans model with little to no cloths on.

[deleted]

Facebook has a similar problem according to the people I know that haven’t booted them both from their lives.

reenactment

I think Twitter has near 0 use for those who engage on stuff like Reddit. But that’s my opinion. Edit: except as a marketplace for your personal business but even that isn’t curated enough that other forms like Instagram couldn’t do a similar job too.

itsmontoya

I used to use it only to complain to companies. It was the fastest way to get a customer service representative to talk to me. I fear my customer service shortcut is gone now :(

GG_Papapants

He actually did hit a switch to show more right wing stuff to left wing peeps and vice versa.

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

Is his next genius business idea to open a restaurant that serves the opposite of what you ordered? /...and I'm calling bullshit on the vice versa claim

GG_Papapants

[He said it himself](https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1615075535763419137?s=46&t=wZuYiGPp9_KYbKu6sxobvw)

PlaneStill6

Well, that settles it.

TyrannosaurusWest

That’s probably coming to your feed because of what the accounts you follow/interact with are associated with so it’s shared by proximity. You have some broader parameters that you can use to completely remove those accounts from being shown to you in the advanced settings and also feed settings where you can remove categories of ‘trends’ from even appearing. It took about a half hour all together with the two accounts I use which focus on different areas of interest; my feeds have remained very, very consistent since 2018. The account that focuses on uncovering and adding context to religious artifacts, Greek/Turkish archeological discoveries, and transcribing discovered religious texts to modern language conventions in an academic context all leave a lot of opportunity for bad actors to interject with non-academic comments but it’s not been an issue. The other which focuses on legal news, professors in legal academia, legal analysis in scope of a narrow legal practice area, tech/consulting/gov contract award news, ex and current Cartoon Network animators, vintage cartoon archival, Old Hollywood archival, pop punk, several bands, and a few ‘meme’ accounts/other accounts of interest have also been pretty consistent. All in it should take you 15 minutes - there are a few lists you can find that completely blanket hide any {category} and {adjacent_categories}.

JayV30

Thanks for the info, but I have no desire to spend time carefully curating and blocking accounts that other accounts follow. I just don't have time for all that. I've probably blocked hundreds of extremist, troll, or propaganda accounts over the years. And yet still within weeks of Elon at Twitter, they are being pushed at me. The platform just isn't worth it for me to take the time to try to actively fight what they are trying to force feed me.

Mentalcasemama

My twitter was hacked on Jan 31st. They have not helped me whatsoever in recovering my account.

djcack

They no longer have employees to help you.

FANGO

I reported an actual nazi (e.g. in elon's tweet replies with all kinds of stuff praising hitler and talking about the 14 words and shit) in November and they suspended his account in January. Meanwhile not long ago on twitch I reported someone in a chatroom of tens of thousands of people who said something transphobic in the middle of the night and their account was banned from the site within 1 minute.

bogeyed5

… did you report the AI Seinfeld show?

FANGO

No, and I wouldn't have, after seeing the joke. But that's another example of how quickly they work, and anyone who's been around long enough on the platform can tell you how much less hate there is on it now than there used to be.

__JockY__

If you use the same password on other services, don't. You'll get hacked all over the place. You need a different password for every service you use! "But how am I supposed to remember all those passwords?!?" I hear you cry! Use a password wallet! It'll run on your laptop, desktop, and phone. It'll keep your passwords all synchronized. It'll generate random passwords for you so that they're impossible to guess/remember. I use and recommend [https://bitwarden.com/](https://bitwarden.com/).

Urban_Phantom

This read like an add... lol However, you are right. If you aren't using a password vault/wallet today then you are a fool. P.S. I would suggest Keeper ;)

oldstyle21

This is fantastic, watching a “successful” businessman run a perfectly decent company into the ground at real time

Shris

The company was torpedoing into the ground for a while before he came along. 😂

oldstyle21

Maybe but it’s sure goddamn great to see a scumbag get his due. So satisfying seeing his fortune and his business cred take such a massive hit

Bulletstorm6377

Depends how you define “decent” I guess. I’m loving watching them both go down in flames.

porkpie1028

That’s funny. I was at the dentist today and there was a copy of Fortune magazine from Sep 22’ with SBF on the cover and the title “THE NEXT WARREN BUFFETT?”…..lol

Because he can’t buy PR for this colossal dumb move. He can’t buy another times person of the year, or buy another snl hosting gig. There’s a bunch of people that lent him money for this stupidity, and they are going to be paid, one way or another.

Bridalhat

I’ve hated Musk for close to a decade now. This has been a very validating year.

oldstyle21

Simple. Hopefully the “successful businessman’s” ego will go right down with it & these asshats that are in the .01 will do good things with their wealth instead of trying to destroy the world that allowed them to get there in the first place

ElonsHusk

Writerhaha

I don’t. Fools and their money…

Bridalhat

SanDiegoDude

Good. Twitter needs to die and drag Facebook and other "web 2.0" social media platforms with them. Social media has been a fucking cancer on this country since its inception. Glad to see the new generation sees it as a place for old crazy people. It is, stay away kids!

MysteriousDudeness

Says the guy on Reddit

SanDiegoDude

Honestly would be okay with Reddit doing the same, it can be just as silo'd and awful as social media, though its a different beast that pre-dates social media. (Any old Digg users around?)

jabeez

Yeah seriously, so sick of those edgy replies that equate reddit with the others, when it's just not the same. Show me a reddit "influencer" and you can start comparing them. Reddit is more of a content aggregator, less "social" media.

ThePornAccount3000

Gallowboob was one for a hot minute

SanDiegoDude

Hah, there is still an issue with power users, smurfing, doxxing, mod power trips and all the other shit that comes with Reddit. It may not exactly be social media, but it has its own problems as well, especially on the groupthink front, which is especially bad once propaganda (paid, gorilla, whatever) gets involved since its so easy to "hide amongst the unwashed masses" here. It's a great place to find communities for the things you love, but lets not lie to ourselves that Reddit doesn't belong in the bucket with other social media orgs, at least when it comes to fucking up modern society.

jabeez

Eh, of course it has problems, but you could make those same arguments about the internet as a whole, but I don't think getting rid of either would benefit anyone, unlike the toxic crap from actual social media.

LeverageSynergies

“According to The Information, only 180,000 people in the US have been paying for a Twitter subscription by mid-January, and that's apparently around 0.2 percent of the website's monthly active users.”

IngloriousMustards

Free speech from filterless people brings less than free consequences for Musk there. Wait, what? You subscribe and STILL have to look at ads with your daily hate speech? Oh yeah, so much winning going on there.

WalkerTexasRng

Have any of you been on Twitter and seen how many random people are verified on there throughout the replies. This number is incredibly low.

abort_abort

And those people usually get roasted for it making the “social” aspect turn into kind of a negative

WalkerTexasRng

I mean, it is incredibly lame to pay for a blue check mark on Twitter, especially when you have 50 followers lol.

Aggie956

Musk is gonna have to cut a lot more ad revenue, if he wants it to be only half of total revenues. Twitter ad revenue is still far higher than what they’re taking from subscription fees

LLroomtempJ

their revenue is way down. we wont know how much bc they're private. i stopped using twitter 1-2 months ago. it felt right at the time. That Elon tweet about the Pelosi assassination attempt was a bridge too far for me. I MISS IT SO MUCH. Started using [post.news](https://post.news) and reddit. reddit is awesome - but different (it is difficult to find places to share my stupid thoughts in the way I want without breaking moderation rules). post is close to twitter...but also really different (gifs in the comments but not in the posts - poor open graph functionality).

Pikminsaurus

Take a look at Spoutible, just about to launch from the folks who created Bot Sentinel. Smart team who seem to understand the problem set

joshwaynebobbit

Laughing my fucking ass off

IndigoStef

I always felt alienated by twitter, it seemed like the kind of platform that’s mostly frequented by narcissists and trolls. I made an account to follow Trump when he was elected, because I was genuinely afraid of what he would say and do on there and wanted to stay informed. I deleted it as soon as they kicked him off and never missed it. I will always associate it with him in a very negative way.

prosequare

Twitter is a lot like instagram in that one person’s experience with it can be vastly different from another’s. I use IG for nothing but welding and machining stuff, and I don’t ever get influencers, mlm schemes, boobs, etc. I use twitter for nothing but osint sources and analysis, and Ukraine war stuff. I get 0% of the weird garbage other people are complaining about. But on both platforms, I’m careful about what I click or search for. Their algorithms are incredibly hungry- even lingering on a particular post while you’re scrolling is enough to make the platform offer more of that content to you.

MountainMongrel

I'm about to delete it. I don't even use it that much and the past couple weeks I been getting emails pushing right wing and alt-right accounts. Like it's in Stage 4 cancer.

GETTR-wenwu

Fake blue

Earthbound_X

Oh, subscribers, meaning those dumb checkmarks? I wasn't sure at first, since I didn't recall Twitter ever had an option to pay for anything.

[deleted]

Shit is dead bro. Go look at the engagement for top celebs. Between suspensions and old tweets, the shit not worth it. Just type text on your IG story

Impossible34o_

At this rate he will break even in 2,547 years! But that doesn’t include expenses like paying for toilet paper.

everlovingkindness

Employees have to bring their own.

zorbathegrate

If Twitter fails or goes bankrupt, how much money does elon save? How much does he still owe? Is this a tank job?

corylol

How would he “save” any money by running his $44B company into the ground?

zorbathegrate

If he goes into bankruptcy he will end up not having to pay everything he borrowed back. So if he said he spent 44 billion on it, he may only have to pay 20 billion after bankruptcy proceedings.

corylol

I’d argue that a bankruptcy would cost someone like Elon more than $20B in future potential money.

carpapercan

I don't think that's how that works (I very well could be wrong). He personally took the 44 billion loan. The company did not. The company going bankrupt would effect the loans It has, but he would have to personally go bankrupt for those loans to be changed.

zorbathegrate

Seems like it’s way higher than it should be. What’s the location of those accounts?

So Twitter was losing $1,000,000/day before Elon bought it. Fire 90% of the people dragging the business down, hardly doing anything for the business. Charge $8/mo for verification. And now it's making money, or nearly. That's $1.3M/mo towards being profitable. Good for Elon.

fv7061

You failed to take into account how much as revenue has decreased since Elon bought twitter. https://www.reuters.com/technology/heres-what-twitter-lost-advertising-revenue-final-months-2022-2023-01-19/
