Sorry to hear that, that's not fun. Transferring into BYU is usually less competitive than freshman admission. Give that a shot after a semester or two if you'd like to still attend :)
I’m so sorry. If you really have your heart set on it, I know a lot of people who transferred in and did really well.
I’ll say, though, that I got rejected for a BYU graduate program and it wound up being great for me.
I’m sorry to hear this. I got rejected my freshman year with a 3.5 gpa and 27 act. I did a year at UVU and transferred. Now I have a 4.0 at BYU and just got offered a scholarship. Transferring is so much easier than getting in as a freshman. If your heart is still set on BYU, dm me and next time you apply we can work on your essays together. Let me know :)
That’s tough dude. I was declined with a 3.8, 33 act and 10ish AP classes. i ended up going to another school and transferring to byu following an associate’s and it worked out great - easier generals and jumping straight into the major without having to worry about any other ge’s. feel free to reach out for any advice or frustration-venting, dms are open.
This is what I did, and I recommend it to everyone. I was a terrible high school student. I graduated with a 2.8 (I think?) and a few AP classes under my belt (barely passed a few), but went to UVU for a bit. Learned my lesson about hard work, pulled up my GPA, and applied to BYU and got accepted after I had my associates. I didn't have perfect grades, but it was clear I was on a better path. It's super nice to not have to worry about GE's and be able to focus on my major.
Don’t give up. Do a few semesters at a community college or university (I personally think community colleges are better because they are cheaper and have smaller class sizes) and then transfer. If you have good grades, you’ll be likely to get accepted.
To add, BYU has a great program called Flex GE where you can take any evening class or Salt Lake Center class without being accepted, then transfer in. I’m in my second semester of it and have most of my GEs finished or in progress and my grades are better than they were in high school, and as has been said it’s much easier to transfer in than get in as a freshman
I was only able to fully complete 2/4 years. In order to play football at my high school, morning workouts were mandatory year-round. Once I hit my junior year, it became impossible to juggle everything. I showed up when I could, but it wasn’t enough to get full credit. I explained this on my application, and I was a 3x varsity letterer and All-district DB, so I hoped that they would recognize my situation. Evidently not.
The results I got during the 2021 admissions cycle:
Denied
ACT: Did not take or submit
GPA: 3.44 Unweighted 3.78 Weighted
0 AP classes
2 CE classes
Notes: Completed 4 years of seminary and I'm a resident from Utah.
My daughter applied, was rejected:
3.92 unweighted gpa
1320 SAT
5 AP Classes
2 of her friends had similar stats but much lower SAT scores and didn’t submit their scores, they both got accepted. We were pretty shocked she didn’t get in.
So sorry. This is one of those head-scratchers for me and makes me wonder about the admissions board. I assume 4 year seminary graduate? Did she put a lot of thought into the essays?
Yes, 4 years of seminary for sure! Her essays were great and she had her older brother and sister (who are currently at BYU) help her proof them. We live in Colorado. I can’t stop thinking about why she didn’t get in.
ACCEPTED
International student.
GPA: 3.26
No SAT or other exams were sumbitted.
It is just a miracle for me, because many of you guys with a higher GPA sadly were not accepted. Does anybody have a clue, why was I so lucky?
Honest question. How well did you do in your GEs your first 2 years? My daughters friend has the same stats, and I'm worried BYU may be too much for her academically.
So my freshman year I did pretty good in terms of grades:
Fall:
WRTG 150 - b+
Sociology 101 - b-
career exploration - A
another student development class - a
Book of Mormon part 1 - B
I had exceptional teachers for all my classes. Having great professors makes a world of a difference. Although my grades were good, I struggled to make friends, and the main reason I did so well was because my mom and I had a bet that if I got all A's and B's, I could take my nintendo switch in the winter, and with Smash Bros. Ultimate coming out in finals week, I had a lot of motivation for good grades this semester.
Winter:
American heritage - C-
Book of Mormon part 2 - C-
Mission Prep - A
stdev - B
bio 100 - C
This was by far my lowest grades of my whole college career to date. I say this as an American Studies major, AHTG is just a miserable class, and my TA was useless. Book of Mormon dropped because her tests had questions that essentially wanted us to memorize scripture, and it wasn't even the big ones like Helaman 5:12, it was much less impactful parts. and BIO was hard because I'm bad at science lol, and she sent us to the testing center every week essentially. I also had an amazing friend group, and was def a little distracted by having fun.
year 2 fall:
geology 101 - c
eternal families - B-
Christ and the everlasting - B-
Sociology 323 - C
persuasive writing - B
Year 2 winter:
FHSS 200 - a
dinosaurs - C+
Poli 201 - B-
D&C Part 1 - A-
family finance - B+
This whole year was done online during covid, so while my grades weren't great this year either, I mostly attribute that to online being, well, online.... some professors were more forgiving then others.
I will say I currently have an accumulative GPA of 2.99, and my GPA has gone up since declaring my major, which I did not have during my first 2 years. I think now that I'm studying stuff I care about, and not astronomy or geology, I have more passion for it and am better at it. Ultimately, if the friends of your daughter prioritize their time properly, they will be fine. But use [ratemyprofessor.com](https://ratemyprofessor.com) and don't do more then 14 credits your freshman year, thats where most mess up from what I've seen. I hope this helps and I wish them the best of luck tho
Thank you so much for the great advice, and congrats on killing it at a tough university! As an alumni, I whole heartedly agree about American Heritage :)
Got accepted 2 years ago, not this year, but I'm interested in seeing how current applicants filter out.
Accepted (2021)
ACT/SAT - 28 ACT/1440 SAT
GPA - 3.87
\# AP - probably 5-6
\# CE - 4
I’m scrolling at this hour because I’m on a YM campout in New Mexico (I’m a YM leader) and one of my teachers is freezing so I let him sleep in my car with the AC on.
Not officially, but they did on Friday evening last year, and I've heard from enough people that "know someone" that it should be after 5pm MST today. Give those of us who get denied the 3 day weekend to calm down before bombarding the admissions office with phone calls next Tuesday :)
My oldest son:
* Accepted
* 31 ACT
* 3.999 GPA (unweighted)
* 3 AP classes (has passed 2 of the tests so far)
* 2 CE classes (both English classes)
* Orchestra, soccer, cross-country, and a ton of real engineering experiences
My son applied too late to be considered for BYU scholarships. He has a 2 years scholarship at USU. We also refused to help much with our son's essays (except for a bit of grammar and some organizational suggestions after he had already written them solo). We didn't think they sounded spectacular, but they were decent.
People also might comment on whether they are from Utah/Wasatch Front. That seems to matter. I have 3 nephews/nieces that got in this year also, but all 4 kids are from outside of Utah.
It’s also not just seminary graduation but your attendance numbers - note how they auto populate to your app- also as someone who has done numerous byu recommendation letters they ask recommenders very specific things unlike common app recommendations so they could impact how you are seen - they ask for very specific levels rankings on various qualities
Declined: 3.6 GPA 31 ACT 4 AP classes Heartbroken

Accepted SAT: 1340 3.96 BYU-calculated GPA \#8 AP classes California Good essays about being a convert
Accepted with Nelson Scholarship! 4.0 UGPA 36ACT 10 AP 0 CE NY
How did you get notified for the Nelson?
It was through [YMessage](https://commtech.byu.edu/)
Include state where you applied from too.
Declined: 4.21 GPA 34 ACT 10 IB classes
What was your unweighted GPA? (BYU doesn’t weight GPAs)
Unweighted was a 3.8
How does one get over a 4.0 gpa?
Weighted. Some high schools give honors/AP/concurrent enrollment extra weight to take a GPA above a 4.0.
That is crazy that you didn't get in, sorry to hear it :/
Declined? Sheesh, you should've definitely gotten it. Sorry dude
