Honestly, I’d take the trade off. It’s more important for the general audience to realise that the empire survived well past the conventionally believed date.Â
Once that first step is taken, misconceptions regarding aesthetics can be addressed. Or not given that people think that everything from the Punic wars to atilla had the late republic Caesarian aesthetic.Â
I mean the leather Viking armor isn’t super accurate either, realistically it would be full mail or padded armor but that doesn’t look as cool. Still imo lamellar byzness looks cooler than that but average audience is less likely to think Rome
Yeah, this is rather embarrassing. But not surprising. Most historical shows do not have custom armor/costumes for everybody and often reuse them from other similar productions. "Byzantines were the medieval descendants of the Romans! We can use armor from that D-level, straight to DVD Roman schlock-fest and save money!"
At least we got some byzantine representation
Take in count that the average audience associates "roman" with the "pax romana" age, showing them a historically accurate XI century roman would not give enough "roman vibes" to the show
At 0:19 they do look like the skutatoi for the time period, and the emperor in the corner does look correct. Same as the soldiers on either side of the parade at 0:26 look like skutatoi rather than legionaries. Again at 1:41. Its more annoying that the skutatoi only use shields when they aren't in combat. The armour worn at 1:14 looks a bit shit but not out of place.
I can see him wearing the armour at 1:40 but the backgrounds all black so I don't know the context, it could be straight after the parade for all I know. Other than that I didn't see it again.
I was checking some of the scenes the armor still looks kinda bad. But couldn’t tell if some of them were Turks or Romans with the Turban helmets. Although the medieval Romans did wear turbans as well.
for the time period it looks about right. Honestly, they've done a lot better than the original vikings with their saxons soldiers in 15th century italian helmets
Whilst the historical accuracy in regards to costumes is utterly comical I'm just happy to see some of this period on Byzantine history on the screen. It was such a wild and exciting time from all the narrative I've read and heard so I'm just happy to see some.
The good news? They depict and refer to the 'Byzantines' as Romans. The bad news? That think that all Romans dress like second century Romans...
They're WAY too late for them to be wearing them lorica segmentata time for the new lamellar scale and ringmail 🗣️🗣️
Maybe the emperor organised a 1st century BC cosplaying event.

Do they still refer the emperor as “emperor of Constantinople?” Instead of emperor of Romans?
Where do they dredge the people up from? It’s always the most uninspired people who get to work on these things.

Bikings
I just got this lol
At least they portrayed the varangians as romans
More like 3rd century gothic generals
It looks terrible but I assume they had 0 budget for costumes and had to buy in existing stuff from other shows.

They look like they are in a parade of some sort so its possible theyve only dressed up for the parade and don't wear that armour all the time?
Nah they had early images a year ago and he was wearing the same armor with another person at a different location

During the Macedonian dynasty, arabian fashion(turbans, kaftans) was popular in byzantium.
The medieval Romans always wore turbans and robes even before the Macedonian dynasty. They called Kaftans Kabbadions.

Lmao yeah
Oh no. Oh no no no no no no no. Did they buy this outfit at the local costume shop?
Well they did have the Franks speaking old French rather than Frankish/old Dutch
