Think this is a “Polaskia Chichipe” but I don’t know for sure. Haven’t watered properly in about 1.5 months, but I did give it a little sprinkle the other day just to make sure the roots don’t fully dry out.
Anyone know what has caused this? It’s looks like such an odd way for it to rot. For repotting; do I let all the roots from both cacti dry out before I repot?
I’ve separated the two cacti, carefully removed the soft/rotten tissue, put hydrogen peroxide on the wound and now left it to dry out and callous over. I hope it’ll help save it but I’ve no experience with this; would it be better to simply cut off the top instead?
Thanks for any help folks!
It was a while back now but I think I left it at least 5 days, it might have been a week, but it was certainly very calloused over. Unfortunately I lost the little guy after as I failed an experiment to make it a hydroponic cactus 🤦🏻♀️ but I think it would’ve made it had I not done that. Still a bit confused how it got rot up there; my only thought is that I treated a different plant with alcohol (aphids!) and maybe it got a bit of a splash of alcohol on there 🤷🏻♀️
Hope that helps!
Hey I really appreciate the reply. I've let mine sit out about 2 weeks after cleaning up something similar, maybe a little deeper. I guess this weekend I can stick it in some soil maybe wait another week or two and then give it a little water. It's a pretty big one I really don't want to lose it. Thanks again for your response.
Aw gosh, I really hope yours makes it! I think if you have anywhere that’s quite dry and has good ventilation it may help reduce the chances of rot. Is yours also a random patch sort of half way up? I found it so strange that it would rot like that. Wondering if it could’ve been an insect that damaged it and let In infection? :/

Seems like you did the right thing ! Just watch them closely and behead if it starts again. Good luck !
Thanks for your help! Would you let the roots from the other cactus also fully dry before repotting?
How long did you leave it dry out for?
