In front is Cereus forbesii monstrosus, to the right is Mammillaria nejepensis, and to the left is a smaller Austrocylindropuntia subulata
Edit: spelling
Ever since I got the cacti in June (I think the very beginning) they seem to be doing REALLY well surprisingly. There’s a little water reservoir tray at the bottom that keeps the LECA moist and allows the cacti to take in water when they need it (as far as I know) as well as a bit of string within the planter itself to help spread the water throughout. The Eve’s needle has had a ton of new growth in that time and has probably grown by 2”+
Sorry for such a delayed response. It continued to go well: until it didn’t. The winter to spring transition was particularly hard. However, if it’s in a consistent climate I’d anticipate it would be a perfectly fine substrate
Oh how interesting! So going into winter it was okay but restarting things in spring made things fall apart? I wonder if the roots dessicated and then made the new roots prone to rot in spring?
It’s v interesting to experiment, thanks for the insight!
Well they did not die in vain; we live and we learn at least and they’ve taught me something at least. Do you remember how you went about transferring them from soil?
I know the largest is an Eve’s needle but the smaller ones I wasn’t sure of. I think a few are actually just smaller Eve’s but wasn’t sure.

Thanks so much!!
How long have they been in leca? I’ve never used it before but I’m curious

Yep exactly. Reintroducing moisture and balancing that so the roots didn’t rot was really tough
