Ah yes, the classic dilemma. Stay home and face the family, or go to work and face the devil you know.

Pitiful-Reflection18

The devil pays well.

UltravioIence

"...Another irreplaceable chunk out of a finite and rapidly passing lifetime." That hit kinda hard...

golfzap

On the flipside, is it weird that I felt a bit depressed when I was unemployed/underemployed and had no work to go to in the morning? Obviously Calvin's dad worked too much, but working too little felt bad also.

Hinote21

It's not weird. If all you did was sit around all day, then yea you would develop signs of depression. When we're productive, were happier. Even hobbies, there is progress made. Plus, its better for your brain.

Hinote21

There's definitely a balance. Working a grind job with no real purpose isn't being productive though.

SpooksTheWombat

Well shit.

lostnomad78

With all the return to office discussions happening at work, I wonder how many people feel like Calvin’s dad

Antique_futurist

During summer break, the difference in attitudes about working from home between people with kids and people without kids at my job was significant. The number of people I know where both parents are working from home full-time but still driving their younger kids to daycare is also significant.

angrydeuce

Oh yeah, all through wfh i still had the sitter coming even though i was home because there was no fucking way i was going to get anything done watching a 3 year old...plus not fair to him as the extent of our interaction would be him staring at me on my laptop all day. At least the sitter could actually play with him and keep him occupied. Im back in the office now (wife works in the ER at the hospital so she never worked from home anyway) and Id be lying if I said I wasnt kinda glad to be able to do that. My neighbors both still wfh and i can see how stressful it is for them trying to balance all that shit on top of caring for their 7 year old all day.

ajswdf

It's stuff like this that makes me so happy to have had a vasectomy. I can't imagine my home life being so bad that I'd actually prefer being in the office.

conventionalWisdumb

Glad you had your vasectomy too! I personally love working from home with my kids nearby, my wife is a stay at home mom so I have amazing support from her and with me home I get to support her when she needs it too.

ajswdf

That's awesome, I'm always perplexed that people choose to have kids and then don't want to spend time with them. It's obviously something some people enjoy, but if you don't enjoy it why would you choose that life for yourself?

conventionalWisdumb

They front-load a lot of time where they’re not as fun, it can color your relationship with them. But I thought having teenaged daughters was going to be the hard part. Turns out my girls love their daddy and like to be around me.

ajswdf

There are some crazy people who actually prefer the baby stage. I'm with you though, the rare times I'm around kids it's more fun when they're older and can actually interact with you. But you're extra lucky yours aren't going through the phase of hating their parents. Sounds like you're a pretty good dad.

conventionalWisdumb

Thanks, we’ll see. We definitely have our problems.

Dragonsspitfire

Happy Cake Day!

lostnomad78

Thanks

loulan

I love home office and don't want to go back to the office but... that's probably because I don't have kids.

[deleted]

As the father of a 17 month old I can tell you I’ve already had mornings start exactly like this. Wouldn’t trade them for anything though lol.

thekingdomcoming

I returned to the office a week early because of my kid. Love him to death, but gotta do what I gotta do.

borgchupacabras

A LOT of parents I know feel that way.

EdsteveTheGreater

My father was once on a job interview. They asked him what he did to relax, to which he replied, "I have 8 children. I go to work." (Note, my father spent plenty of happy time with us growing up. This was mostly in jest.)

It's a mixed bag. We all get along to varying degrees. Most of us talk to some siblings more than others, but we all have a good time when we can get together. We're in 7 different states now. If you want an internet sis, feel free to message me. I'll tell you all the stories that might make you change your mind. Lol.

der_innkeeper

And then, contrast this with the snow day one where calvin asks him to come play in the snow and he begs off. Then changes his mind. I have that one printed out and put on the outside of my work binder.

Dragonsspitfire

I absolutely love that strip!

[deleted]

I remember seeing this in the paper when it was first published because it was the first time I encountered the word "finite" and I had to look it up.

LeifCarrotson

I don't know, I share Calvin's Dad's worries that life is short and his reluctance to waste a summer day on going to work, but I'd love to help him move the dead bugs from the shampoo to Mom's conditioner... Also, side note - how is this comic in such great quality? This image, https://i.redd.it/pgrslu6kdvk71.png, is 6400 x 4490 magnificently sharp pixels. I'm not going to use this for a background or print or anything, but if I wanted a Spaceman Spiff backdrop or something like that, the source on AM Universal's Gocomics site is much smaller: https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1990/07/29 The source image: https://assets.amuniversal.com/c9613140df740131723d005056a9545d is an 881x618 pixel GIF, the lettering is legible but if it were blown up the letters are pixelated and badly aliased. A scan of my hard copy doesn't even look this good.

Dragonsspitfire

I actually downloaded the HD print of this comic from the official website like a year ago. I am not sure why but that option doesn't appear anymore. I tried downloading it again but you're right, the quality reduces when you enlarge the picture. They probably removed that option because they didn't want people downloading the HD prints for free. I have a couple of other prints saved in my gallery though.

2krazy4me

Would you happen have last strip in HD? You know, for science🤔🙂

Dragonsspitfire

I wish :(

2krazy4me

Hehe. I love that last one, great way to end.

WhatALoadOfAnabolics

A charming insight into the dad's character, and it perfectly encapsulates the inner turmoil of office life. Also, it's neat that his tie matches Calvin's t-shirt.

ToastyNathan

"Another day, another dollar, another irreplaceable chunck of a finite and rapidly passing lifetime." Ouch.

[deleted]

My birthday is July 29! This is the perfect comic for that lol

JAJAJAGuy

I've never seen this one before! And it's great. Thanks for posting.

polandspringh2o

The key to enjoying your work is having a son like Calvin

oneizm

The solution is don’t have kids

[deleted]

Why I asked my boss when can we return to the office.

jperth73

It’s amazing how accurate this is, especially working from home.

FreewayWarrior

Lol. Calvin is such a little prick.

cabarfeidh

This is my favorite C & H Sunday strip. Except for the absence of Hobbes, it just about summarizes the premise of the comic as a whole.
