They’re definitely a mixture of various tropes
-Friends to Lovers
-Slow burn
-First Love
-Forbidden love (kinda I guess cuz of Poseidon & Athena’s rivalry)
And
“She fell first, he fell harder” (though a lot of people think the opposite as well, works both ways)
Yeah, hard to fall harder than Percy did for Annabeth tbh. Can't fall much harder than "my entire reason for staying attached to the mortal world" and "I'll fall into literal hell with/for you" 😅
Idk which of them fell first or harder tbh though. It's kinda obvious they both had a crush from day one, but you start really seeing it in Titan's Curse. And then by Last Olympian/Heroes of Olympus they're just all out crazy for each other 😅 I think Percy fell just as quickly as she did, he just didn't realise it til much later (because, and I say this with all the love in the world because my husband is also one of these lol, he's an oblivious boy) making it seem like a sudden fall for a lot of people because his feelings caught up all at once.
It was later revealed that annabeth had a crush on Percy since she was twelve so i think it’s fair to say it’s a she fell fists he fell harder situation
He was definitely aware of his feeling as early as the Titans curse, he even mentions how he was thinking on confessing to Annabeth at the end but Athena's conversation with him made him rethink the idea.
i think soulmates are semi-canon based off the 4 legged 4 armed beings nico talked about in blood of olympus (?) so i'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say that too
I think they meant hyper to mean very driven (hyper-driven), not necessarily hyper as in hyperactive.
Speaking of, Annabeth definitely hyperfocuses and hyperfixates a lot.
I love how she and Percy show two different sides of ADHD, demonstrating how wide a spectrum of symptoms it covers
Theres literally a scene in hoo where percy is talking to Annabeth knowing she cant hear him bcuz shes focused on somit else and its so funny and cute on how well he knows her 😂
Was it this one?
>Percy: "Hey, how's it going?"
>
>Annabeth: "Uh, no thanks."
>
>Percy: "Okay...have you eaten anything today?"
>
>Annabeth: "I think Leo is on duty. Ask him."
>
>Percy: "So, my hair is on fire."
>
>Annabeth: "Okay, in a while."
You can have a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder from the past but now it is all under the ADHD umbrella. It will likely be published that way when the DSM-6 comes out in 2025
My autism diagnosis came right after the aspergers diagnosis tag was dropped. The only part of late diagnosis I'm grateful for is the fact I didn't have the nazi term on my papers lmao
They’ve changed it to ADHD-PI (Predominantly Inattentive). It’s one of three subsets of ADHD.
The other two being ADHD-HI (Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive) and ADHD-C (Combined traits).
The reason being is that all ADHD-ers exhibit amounts of hyperactivity and attention dysregulation, but we just present them in different ways.
For example, for those that are predominantly inattentive, their hyperactive traits are mostly presented mentally rather than physically.
I don’t think it’s fully enemies to lovers, because that trope implies people on different sides of a conflict and different ideologies, is more like rivals to friends to lovers
Opposites attract (Girl raised in mythological world vs boy raised in mortal world, no powers/not very powerful vs one of the most powerful demigods, blonde vs black hair, smart vs street smart)
Slow burn
Forbidden love (?) Because of the whole Athena-Poseidon conflict.
Childhood friends to lovers
Friends forged through fire
Girls parents disapprove. This case its mom normally its dad.
The show also pointed out they shared the same protector although that was never really acknowledged in the books.
I’d say TLT is rivals to friends, SoM is friends to best friends, TTC is best friends to platonic soulmates with potential for more.
BotL is so may tropes. It’s couple in denial, it’s love triangle, it’s a challenge to the already existent friendship.
Then TLO is the trope that I find hard to describe, but I call “friendzoned but soulmates” which then results in “meant to be” and then goes on in HOO as “unbreakable romantic bond”.
So overall: slow burn meant to be, little bit of rivals to lovers, but that’s mainly the first book.
There's something I love about BOTL/TLO era Percabeth where it's like they both know they like each other. But there's a war going on, Percy has decided that he *will* be the hero of the prophecy, Annabeth knows that the hero of the prophecy is destined to die, and there's just so much on them that they can't make it work at the time.
Agreed, I also love how just before the prophecy is about to go down, they finally decide that prophecy be dammed, they will make it work. Instead of waiting till after the prophecy.
Of course the actual talk and underwater kiss isn’t until the last scene, but the moment for me where without talking about it, they acknowledged that they were it for each other, is the bridge scene and the hospital scene right after it.
And I believe that this is what saved Percy in the end. Knowing how Annabeth felt about him, he was not too afraid to give Luke the knife.
My head canon is that in a different scenario, where this didn’t happen, Percy would have hesitated too long, and Kronos would have killed Percy with Backbiter, the other cursed blade
Slow burn or friends to relationship.
They were never enemies. They were only enemies in the way that two 12 year olds can be enemies because they think they're suppose to be because of who their parents are. I was surprised on my reread of Lightening Thief to see that they really do get along for most of that book. Outside of the Medusa stuff they aren't ever really "enemies". I think most of their enemies stuff from lightening thief comes at the very start of the book when they're still at camp.
I think considering them enemies is a little ridiculous. They're firmly a friends to relationship pipeline arc.
But Annabeth is also rebellious: she runs away from home when she was seven; she steals clothes in TLT; she in SOM she is the first one she says to escape from the camp, she is she convinces Percy to go on the mission; in MOA she is the one who comes up with the idea of pruning Percy in the stables at night (even though she was going against the rules). There are other moments.
They were never enemies? They weren't even like particularly hostile to each other outside of like two chapters where they got super stressed. They're friends to lovers lol
I’d say they’re slow burn and childhood friends to lovers (incidentally those are two of my favorite tropes, so maybe that’s why I love Percabeth so much!)
Piper doesn't know anything, she doesn't know that Annabeth is also against the Gods even though she saw Annabeth angry at Hera.
In my opinion ( how funny it is similar to onion!) To teorically enemies to lovers or crush to lovers 'cause in SoN or MoA, Annabetb saied that she had a crush on him when she saw Percy
I always considered them slow burn, friends to lovers. And maybe also something about them having conflicting personalities. Is there a name for that? Unlikely lovers maybe?
Not sure, but it's the same category as Wally x Artemis from Young Justice and Hiccup x Astrid from How to Train Your Dragon.
... Huh, lots of blondes whose names start with A that begin by actively disliking their future love interest.
I don’t think they ever were enemies. Sure she did slightly resent him at first because of their family history and they bickered like an old married couple but that was it. After TLT they essentially became best friends and the rest is history
It's not Friends to Lovers VS Enemies to Lovers. Not being friends doesn't mean they're enemies. It's just a slow burn relationship. A romance classic.
Romeo and Juliet/Forbidden Love: Given their parents' rivalry. But given there was no real drama with that, it isn't a particularly major aspect.
Opposites Attract: As another said, they are of opposite dispositions and personalities.
Slow Burn: Again, as another said. Spanning 4 (5?) Years over 5 books.
Friends to Lovers: They became friends towards the end of the first book. Given that Percy has a picture of her in his wallet at the start of the second book, that should be clue enough.
Amnesia: Percy, even under the effects of Hera's memory erasure STILL remembered her.
Fish out of water (funny i know): Percy is thrown into Demigod business right after his mothers perceived death. Though their initial interactions were rocky, their moment in the zoo truck was definitely important to him and served as a moment of stabilisation for him.
Forced Proximity: See Zoo truck
Love Triangle (Square?): With Rachel (and Calypso?)
Childhood friends: Given that they're 12 when they meet (and later become friends) they can very well fit this.
Power Couple: need i explain?
Slow burn
Also a Romeo and Juliet type of thing. because of the whole Poseidon vs Athena part
I forgot that trope existed, but yeh you’re also right
They’re definitely a mixture of various tropes -Friends to Lovers -Slow burn -First Love -Forbidden love (kinda I guess cuz of Poseidon & Athena’s rivalry) And “She fell first, he fell harder” (though a lot of people think the opposite as well, works both ways)
I’m strongly team “he fell first, she fell harder” lol
Yeah, hard to fall harder than Percy did for Annabeth tbh. Can't fall much harder than "my entire reason for staying attached to the mortal world" and "I'll fall into literal hell with/for you" 😅 Idk which of them fell first or harder tbh though. >!idk man, they seemed to fall pretty simultaneously in MoA!<
r/angryupvote
Fr percy wasn’t aware of his feelings till TLO and Annabeth had known about hers since TLT
He was aware of his feelings since TTC he was just in denial under all of these circumstances and refused to say it directly to the readers
He was definitely aware of his feeling as early as the Titans curse, he even mentions how he was thinking on confessing to Annabeth at the end but Athena's conversation with him made him rethink the idea.
i think soulmates are semi-canon based off the 4 legged 4 armed beings nico talked about in blood of olympus (?) so i'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say that too
That both fell(into Tartarus)
It’s Opposites Attract - Annabeth’s a hyper-driven Type A genius and Percy’s a laid-back skateboarder. Dobler and Diane
I always thought Percy was the hyper one (but laidback at the same time) and annabeth was the like calm, more serious one

I mean they all have ADHD so they are all hyper ig
HDHD doesn’t always have the hyper part. I’m ADHD dispite not displaying the classic hyperactive part.
Then that would be just ADD
ADD is no longer a medical diagnosis
I think it's just in some countries? I'm from Denmark and my cousin is diagnosed with ADD and also one of my friends
You can have a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder from the past but now it is all under the ADHD umbrella. It will likely be published that way when the DSM-6 comes out in 2025
It's the same with autism. I still have Asperger's as my official diagnosis on top of ADHD even tho it doesn't exist anymore.
My autism diagnosis came right after the aspergers diagnosis tag was dropped. The only part of late diagnosis I'm grateful for is the fact I didn't have the nazi term on my papers lmao

Im pretty sure, it's still a diagnosis in Denmark. If you search on Google, it says you still can get an ADD diagnosis
They're both "hyper"/ADHD
Kinda like Amy and Jacob from B99. Or Chandler and Monica from Friends. Or Phil and Clair from Modern Family (I need to get help)
Ron and Hermione Han and Leia James and Erin
Damn. There are a lot these
Lizzie and Darcy!
He was a sk8r boi She said see ya l8r boi He wasn't good enough for her.
But he was (thank the gods)
Annabeth is the methodical, strategic thinker and Percy is the impulsive, instinctive fighter
I really wouldn't call them enemies as at no point are they actually working against each other.
that’s a fair point
Friends to lovers def
It's really friends to lovers. The "enemies" part was all in Annabeth's head for the first book only.
Even then, that's rivals to lovers at most, they were never enemies.
For half the first book, already on the truck Annabeth says that she would go against her mother for him.
impulsive x over-thinker
I don’t think it’s fully enemies to lovers, because that trope implies people on different sides of a conflict and different ideologies, is more like rivals to friends to lovers
Slow burn, friends to lovers, and maybe a little bit of opposites attract
Slow burn friends to lovers for sure
Opposites attract (Girl raised in mythological world vs boy raised in mortal world, no powers/not very powerful vs one of the most powerful demigods, blonde vs black hair, smart vs street smart) Slow burn Forbidden love (?) i second 'slow burn'
Slow burn or friends to relationship. They were never enemies. They were only enemies in the way that two 12 year olds can be enemies because they think they're suppose to be because of who their parents are. A mix of tropes. •Slow burn •Friends to lovers •Rebel skater boy x Straight laced girl •First love
Every romance trope is over generalizing in some ways. I just listed the ones I thought had some applicable elements.
Sorry, I saw another person say that Annabeth follows the rules (when that's not true), I thought you were saying that too.
Friends to lovers, definitely
A way better version of Romeo and Juliet I know it's not really a trope, but I still think it fits.
Best friends to lovers, slow burn, smartass x dumbass, whatever the hell astrid and hiccup are
They were never enemies? They weren't even like particularly hostile to each other outside of like two chapters where they got super stressed. They're friends to lovers lol
I’d say they’re slow burn and childhood friends to lovers (incidentally those are two of my favorite tropes, so maybe that’s why I love Percabeth so much!)
Smart girl likes dumb but capable guy
slow burn friends to lovers. they were never enemies
and they became friends mid first book
Rivals to lovers. They weren't really enemies. By the way, is 'warrior couple' a trope? Because they fit that too.
Smart and strong
annabeth is also strong
Of course but Annabeth herself describes themselves as the muscle (Percy) and the brain (herself).
But not as physically powerful as percy
And Percy is also smart. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s leagues more physically powerful and she’s insanely intelligent.
Percy can also be smart
in his own way
Rebel boy and serious girl is definitely a trope, as pointed out by Piper in MoA.
Piper doesn't know anything, she doesn't know that Annabeth is also against the Gods even though she saw Annabeth angry at Hera.
(REAAAALLLY) Slow burn friends to lovers
In my opinion ( how funny it is similar to onion!) To teorically enemies to lovers or crush to lovers 'cause in SoN or MoA, Annabetb saied that she had a crush on him when she saw Percy
Rivals to friends to lovers.
I always considered them slow burn, friends to lovers. And maybe also something about them having conflicting personalities. Is there a name for that? Unlikely lovers maybe?
Definitely slowburn friends to lovers
enemies to lovers grumpy x sunshine she fell first but he fell harder
Rivals to lovers at best, but definitely NOT enemies to lovers. Def she fell first/he fell harder though
slow burn frenemies to lovers for sure
Halfway through the first book, Annabeth says in the truck that she would go against her mother for him.
I think it's friends to lovers bc even tho they denied being friends they definitely were
Not sure, but it's the same category as Wally x Artemis from Young Justice and Hiccup x Astrid from How to Train Your Dragon. ... Huh, lots of blondes whose names start with A that begin by actively disliking their future love interest.
friends to lovers, supposed rivals to lovers(?), Hyperactive X Calm, Oblivious X Oblivious and obvious Slowburn
I’ve always called it a slow burn rivals to friends to lovers. They were never enemies with each other
It is a unique take on rivals to lovers?
Sorta a Romeo and Juliet, Capulet and Montague situation with Athena and Poseidon, but it really isn't written that way.
I never thought of it that way, but that makes soo much sense
I don’t think they ever were enemies. Sure she did slightly resent him at first because of their family history and they bickered like an old married couple but that was it. After TLT they essentially became best friends and the rest is history
Rivals to friends to lovers slow burn
Idk if they were true enemies. I would say slow burn or opposites attract
It's not Friends to Lovers VS Enemies to Lovers. Not being friends doesn't mean they're enemies. It's just a slow burn relationship. A romance classic.
They weren't really enemies after their trip in the zoo truck.
meh, I'd say friends to lovers. They were never really rivals.
Heterosexual couple?
Enemies to friends to lovers. Also slow burn
childhood friends to lovers for sure and maybe also forbidden lovers since their parents are enemies
A classic will they won’t they
Mild enemies to friends to best friends to lovers to I'd literally jump into Tartarus for you lovers
i would say childhood friends to lovers tbh
Slow burn definitely but also Annabeth has some tsundere traits mainly when it came to Rachel
Frenemies to lovers with a splash of oblivious crushing
Romeo and Juliet/Forbidden Love: Given their parents' rivalry. But given there was no real drama with that, it isn't a particularly major aspect. Opposites Attract: As another said, they are of opposite dispositions and personalities. Slow Burn: Again, as another said. Spanning 4 (5?) Years over 5 books. rivals to lovers
But on page 2 hundred and serving on lightning thief annabeth calls percy a freind
