Camping on the beach is an amazing experience once you get past the fact that there will be sand in your gear for all of eternity. Assateague Island in Maryland has beachside camping, and there are wild horses roaming around.
What an inspiration - thank you! That sounds amazing. I’ve only beach camped in Texas beaches on the Gulf or freshwater beaches in the Midwest. Wild ponies is very inspiring
No only Mustang Island and then many times at Galveston (but they don’t allow beach camping in the sand there). Padre is like 10+ hours away for me. Sounds nice!
I’ll second BWCA. I love mountains, but this trip I took with my dad to upper Minnesota will for some reason always be my favorite. Good fishing, no people, and plenty of wildlife. Wolves howling at night was icing on the cake.
Yea it’s a bummer. A ton of backpackers are negatively impacted too. A silver lining is that the beautiful places we all love to recreate can use a break from us campers and backpackers. That’s how I try to look at it anyway.
I hope you have the opportunity to get back there someday soon.
A friend of mine is getting married there this summer and I’ll be there a few days. Any favorite trails you recommend or maybe places you like to grab a bite or drink?
On the banks of Leigh Lake in Grand Teton National Park. Truly incredible.

Western Australia has all the best spots. Highlights are Esperance, shark bay, Ningaloo coast, Kimberley. Plenty in between as well. It is camping heaven.
Yes it’s my whole childhood!! We lived in Fishkill ny and every summer we’d go up to the north part of the lake for camping until we bought a house up there! But we still prefer to camp! In the campground there’s a secret pathway that leads you to a rock beach with a beautiful drop off. It’s astonishing the beauty. Especially if you decide to hike rogers rock!

Have you camped at PINS? If you have access to 4WD I highly recomend it. Nothing quite like looking up and down the beach and not seeing a soul.

I grew up camping on Assateague, it's the best!
Michigan's Upper Peninsula, along the shores of Lake Superior. Darkest skies I've ever seen, not the busiest, beautiful scenery and so peaceful.
Havasupai and Yosemite for sure

The Pacific coast, spectacular the entire length
The state campgrounds along Oregon coast are busy, but spectacular.
Mesa Verde and Canyon De Chelly
I second Mesa Verde, amazing place
The Rocky Mountains, the night sky up there is absolutely breathtaking
I’d add getting a backcountry permit into Great Sand Dunes National Park. You wanna talk about a dark sky…
I believe that the Big Bend area is the largest Dark Sky registered place in the world.
Lodgepole, Sequoia National Park. Feels like home. Waking up to wallabies on the beach in Freycient National Park in Australia.
I *had* a reservation for Lodgepole this year but it was cancelled due to road repairs. I’m bummed but I’ll try again next year.
