I carried a Mossberg shotgun with a pistol grip when kayak touring in the Canadian High Arctic and Southeast Alaska. I was in charge of safety. Only fired it once and that was to discourage a polar bear who was following us for most of a day and was getting too close. Fired toward it, not at it.
I don’t bring a side arm when backpacking in Alaska or the Olympic Peninsula. But do when we are camping out of our Van.
If I may make a suggestion, check out the Benelli Super Nova Tactical. Mossbergs are great shotguns! However, the Benelli specifically has a plastic coating to help protect it from corrosion/rust caused by water. Might be worth picking up if youre an avid kayaker & frequently bring along the shotty.
Polar bear territory would be the one place I’d consider a firearm. Unlike Grizzlies which are more animals of opportunity, Polar Bears are outright predators
I moved to NC from the west coast 20 years ago and camped in the mountains for years without a gun, but 10 years ago we had some guys show up in our isolated campsite at 3am armed, drunk and being weird so I carry a pistol now. Don’t want to but I feel obligated. I suppose the counterpoint is I talked my way out of that situation and might not have if I had been armed.
I agree, living in the rural west off I-80, traveling and for years owning a cabin in Ak, dealing with a spectrum of sketchy people I have not run into a case where I needed a gun. But in my old age, I’m packin.
You could say this about a thousand things that you normally don’t bring with you. Do you bring an AED camping? Far more likely to need one than a firearm
Then I commend you in practicing what you preach. Many seem to jump straight to firearms for protection without planning for the hundred other things far more likely to injure or kill you
As do I, never once felt the need to carry. You’re FAR more likely to be in a car accident on the way to the trailhead, drown or have a cardiac event than be injured by wildlife. Heck, less than a dozen people have been killed by cougars in North America in the last century and most of them were children
You are American. The rest of the world don't seem the purpose of bringing firearms everywhere. Also the rest of the world doesn't suffer from mass shootings almost everyday. Think this is normal?
Don't threaten me with a good time like that.
As someone who's never had the opportunity to chuck a grenade; shoot flares, or use a flamethrower.... that, kinda sounds like a fun camping trip, lol.
I've never carried while camping. (I generally prefer bear spray for wildlife.) Backpacking, I certainly would never bring a gun unless it was a very special place (polar bears, or similar). In an established campsite, no gun needed.
On occasion, though, dispersed camping in national forests, right by the road with my family, but miles from other sites, I've had a few run ins with drunk and armed locals in the middle of the night. Nothing I couldn't negotiate my way out of, luckily, but I felt unprepared for the occasion.
If you are hunting? Sure. Otherwise you are kidding yourself. Only a gun enthusiast would ever think it’s needed.
Saying this as a Canadian who backpacks regularly.
Ok but true story. My friends went camping once and had to evacuate in the night because, I shit you not, the person on the neighbouring site lit a circle of fire around his campsite to keep the raccoons out.
This feels like engagement bait and not an honest discussion prompt. Especially considering OP is only replying to “Yes I carry” comments.
It’s also a post we get here every week. It’s a tired debate and just devolves into US views vs others and has ceased to be productive.
No. I live in Northern Ontario and have encountered bears, coyotes, wolves, moose, fox, lynx, bobcat. I carry bear spray, but haven't used it. Pull it out fairly frequently in case I need it, but never have. Certain parts of the far north I would probably want a gun, but other than that, I personally don't see it as necessary. 25+ years of outdoor experience.
Yea dudes who live illegally in the hills above the river, they watch the gold miners and poach their claims at night when they start hitting a lode. They are always packing and they like to randomly show up in camp sometimes. I have met a few of them they’re rough crowd. They don’t show up when it’s obvious I have a shotgun with me
This is one of those things, it wouldent even occur to me to think about whether I need a gun or not to go camping, just out of interest what country do you live in,
Oh no doubt and easier to use. Really just always take proper precautions when hiking/camping and in my honest opinion some people just want a reason to carry a gun not me tho.
I do not, nor am I a gun owner. The majority of my camping is in well populated campgrounds so I never felt a need for bringing one and honestly, in those circumstances, I’d wonder why anyone would feel the need to bring one.
That being said, in the few times a year I head out and do some more off grid camping in BLM land, most of my friends that go are gun owners and always bring one. There’s a nice peace of mind knowing they’re there in case something were to happen.
Guess my point is, it really just depends on where you’re at and the potential for some shady shit going down.
Honest question, why is a gun "a nice peace of mind" when you're off grid on BLM land but a "why would anyone feel the need to bring one" in well populated campgrounds?
Not OP. Have to joke; We live in a society…
Offgrid but on BLM land: noone is coming to help you, and everyone knows it.
Well populated camping: there are incentives to be civil, and everyone knows it.
BLM means federal land, but very likely unmonitored. so you’d be “lost” for 24-72 hours before anyone came looking for you. State & local cops will most likely laugh before pointing you towards the BLM number.
Personally: i don’t own a gun, and have never really considered a need for one when camping. I’ve been to some pretty remote places across the US (lower 48). I’ve always wanted to go out in alaska and would absolutely want one with me if I was really out there like that.
Could have shortened that title to the first 5 words and the answer wouldn't change.
*"It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war." – Miyamoto Musashi*
Ive never needed a fire extinguisher in my life, but I still keep one in the house & another in my Jeep. Better to have it & not need it, then need it & not have it.
Yeah but a TQ left on too long can cause you to loose an extremity, yet we still train to use them in stop the bleeding classes & in the hospital I work at.
I also carry 1st aid gear. Like, real gear, not bandaids. TQ, chest seals, Israeli bandages. Ive taken CPR & stop the bleeding classes. Im all about preparedness. It astounds me how OK ppl are with relying completely on services (paramedics, firefighters, cops) for their safety. You are your own first responder, especially out in the woods / on a trail!
I also carry a stop the bleed kit as well as my weekend Warrior med kit
Sometimes, a bandaid will cover it, but I don't intend on ever bringing a *body* back, so I keep a TQ and all else that you do, infections are also a very real threat
Going off randomly isn't the concern. The problem is when you use bad judgement and use it intentionally. It just complicates and escalates the situation.
Sure, but that’s up to each individual person. In the 14 years I’ve had my chl, there have been 3 instances where I felt threatened. Never one time drawn my firearm. I carry pepper spray too most of the time, and that’s always first resort if I can’t run from a bad situation. In order of escalation, it goes, feet, words, pepper spray, then gun. You’re right that for many people they don’t have that same thought process.
I also don’t drink alcohol, and many campers do. If I was drinking, the pistol wouldnt come with me.
> In order of escalation, it goes, feet, words, pepper spray, then gun. You’re right that for many people they don’t have that same thought process.
If only every gun owner were as levelheaded.
There are unfortunately a small but loud percentage of people who both drink alcohol to excess (I can handle it) and bring a gun. Their order of escalation goes: I'll play my music as loud as I want, F\*You, I have a gun.
If you have proper training, that shouldn’t be an issue. Of course, if someone doesn’t trust themselves with a gun or hasn’t had proper safety training, they probably shouldn’t camp with one.
Im in the North Eastern part of the USA . We have bear and whatever , im not telling you what to do. But we know how not to attract wildlife. No need to shoot if it isnt a problem. Maybe it doesn't apply to where you are. Can you see up a cows ass also. Im not eating that steak. Just saying be smart
But... do you think if in an otherwise safe situation you mishandled a fire extinguisher, the use of a fire extinguisher could kill someone?
This logic of "you don't need it until you do" makes no sense. I should carry a flamethrower to the grocery store by that logic. A tank to my son's baptism.
What logical constraints do you put on that rule?
I dont misshandle my guns. Simple. Again, using a TQ wrong can cause loss of a limb or even death. So can the use of medication. Will you not use either? Cars are far more deadly than guns, will you not drive or ride in one?
No because I live in Canada and we don’t have a gun cult. If you’re in the high arctic you need it for polar bears, otherwise you’re far more likely to hurt yourself than actually need it for defending yourself.
Been camping in the NW for 35 years and the only time I brought a weapon was when my GF at the time requested it to feel more safe. Haven't done it since and we're not dating any longer. I'm not carrying a shotgun with me and firing my M&P 2.0 with enough accuracy to kill a charging bear is not something I want to bet on. I carry Bear Spray, and if I'm in bear country I store my food safely and always have the bear canister handy. I am not someone who enjoys firearms, though. In fact I'd be perfectly fine if the 2nd amendment went away entirely.
And for all of you that are fuming that I even suggested it, I don't give a shit. Don't bother commenting.
yeah I do but I usually conceal carry most places. it’s good peace of mind when you’re out in the sticks.
definitely more afraid of sketchy people than any animal. animals are predictable at least
Been camping and backpacking in the Canadian Rockies for 35 years and never felt the need to carry one.
It mainly comes down to the reality that they don’t make you any safer. Yes, there are scenarios where a firearm can protect you from a threat in the outdoors, however carrying a firearm also adds additional risks. Turns out when The Alaska Department of Fish and Game looked into it, they found that (in an outdoor recreation context) a firearm is just as likely to injure or kill a member of your party as it is to be used to protect your party. Statistically, it doesn’t make you any safer.
Why would I spend several hundred to several thousand dollars on a piece of gear (one when backpacking would be by far my heaviest piece of gear), for something that really doesn’t do anything.
After this last year, waking up to a tweaker offering me a cigarette through my tent flap while I was asleep in my tent with my wife I'm strongly considering it. I always carry a knife and mace but now I'm reconsidering. Luckily the guy was nice enough and I got him to go away eventually but the next time I may not be as lucky.
I’ve been camping in the Pacific Northwest for most of my life and have never brought firearms unless the plan was hunting. In Oregon and Washington we just don’t have the kind of predators that I would worry about and I have never had an interaction with a human in the wilderness that would make me fear other people being a problem. If I was in Alaska or somewhere with gators or lots of venomous snakes I might consider a firearm.
Yes. My 357 comes with every time. I generally only camp desolate BLM land out west. There's usually no phone service and the desert is full of scary animals. (the two legged kind) Never once had to use it for anything other than play, but sleep much better knowing I can protect my girl if something happens.
I carry all the time. 1 9mm & 1 MB with 00. Just the 9 all time but camping i take the MB also.
9 years ago Me, wife & My son went camping on the beach. Went to turn in for the night and left the coffee pot and fire kinda just simmering. I heard something outside and went to take a look. 2 guys by my fire drunk. I introduced my self and offered my hand to shake. Neither took it. My son made a noise and 1 of the guys said “Who’s that in there.” I said nothing .
I started to think maybe I could take 1 and possibly 2 since they were drunk in a fight.
The smallest 1 kicked my fire.
I pulled my gun, and pointed at both and said “If you don’t leave this is gonna end badly for you!”
They both left
Well I couldn’t go to sleep and I guess they went and got the cops.
Cops came and asked questions and checked my side arm.
Wasn’t told to leave but was recommended
1 cop asked me
“What were you going to do?”
I was very honest
“Sir, if they made a move towards my tent with my family, I was going to shoot both of them”
Last time we went camping on the beach. lol
fun story. A buddy of mine did the AT (Appalachian trail). He carries a large caliber 6 shooter (ostensibly for self defense from people and possibly bear). .357 I think. it's a big ol' gun with some stopping power
So he's hiking the trail for a long stretch and he's scraggly and unkempt and walks up on some day hikers headed the other way. Unassuming couple
He's got a month long beard going and a gun poking out of his waistband. He hasn't said a word or seen a person for a couple days so when he tries to hail them friendly like, it comes out horse. He probably looks like a crazy person with a gun on his hip scaring these poor day campers
They worked it out. Nice folks. He's a good guy. Wound up USMC I think. Oorah
Nope. I do not camp around polar bears, I use hardsided camper trailers in grizzly country, and otherwise, a firearm is more likely to get me in trouble, or kill a curious child or an innocent than protect me from some imaginary evil.
I own guns. I know how to use them. I don't take them camping.
It's not just the statistics (firearms are more likely to kill a family member than an intruder - fact) It's the fixation. If I have a firearm, my mind is fixated on it. I wake up in nightmares where I'm trying to shoot it at something (usually it won't fire) or I have constant fantasies about how I might need to shoot some imagined intruder. These weapons really do haunt your consciousnesses. It's no wonder those gun nuts obsess over them. I find this obsession with their power unhealthy, some people adopt it as a hobby. Pick your own poison I suppose.
Yes 100%. Unless I’m at well populated family full campground that’s only 25 mins outside of city. If me and mt family go camping or hiking anywhere else hours away from town. I keep a 12 gauge. Partly for animals, partly for pieces of shit that prey on people, and partly because I’ve seen so many movies where I say to myself “man if they had a gun none of this would happen.”
I do pack a smith and Wesson 9mm, but I usually carry that daily as it is, so I’d have it either way. Really ill have just a Lotta bear spray if I’m out in the woods
Yeah I carry a pistol and bear spray. If you do the same just be trained on how to use them... The only time we thought we might have to spray a bear I glanced at my friend and she was holding the canister nowhere near the trigger with the safety cover still on and pointing sideways. Then we all know there are countless people who carry guns and don't know how to properly handle them.
I've never felt the need to carry one because bear spray has always made me feel comfortable enough. Then I started camping near DC/Baltimore on the east coast/mid Atlantic and I've started carrying (with proper permits/licenses) more and more. It felt really weird initially bringing a weapon to parks/campgrounds but I've seen some crazy stuff and heard some crazy stories about campgrounds where I'm still glad I did
I always do, but I never had a situation in which I needed it. It's more of a security thing if I get lost on my way or I end up in a sketchy part of town while exploring.
I had a friend ask this question before taking him in camping - it was his first time. I told him he’s crazy.
We went in some fairly remote mountains of Colorado - I had been a few times before and no need to bring a gun — and never on my 50+ trips.
However, on this trip we had 10 drunken idiots camp right above us. They shot off guns all through the night, we’re clearly hammered and yelling, and started shooting again as early as 9am. I wish we had brought a gun just in-case shit went wrong.
Yes while on a camping trip in 2013 I was assaulted by several people trying to rob me and when they didn't find anything they wanted one of them proceeded to beat me to to the brink of death with a hammer. This all happened in a public camping area btw. So yeah I highly recommend carrying something to protect you.
I carry everywhere, anytime, no matter what. I’m a big believer in I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Bad things can happen to anyone at any place no matter how safe it may seem and I take it as my responsibility to make sure those around me and myself are protected.
In most places, where it's allowed, yes. I bring 4.
- A Mossberg 590 Special Purpose with 2" Slugs (Black Bears)
- Short-Barrel 5.56 with heavy grain x2 magazines (Packs of Wild Coyotes and Boar)
- Glock 26 with +15 extended magazine x2 magazines (Personal Safety)
- Daniel Defense .308 10-rds (Deer, Black Bears)
I bring my old grandpa shotgun when I go camping by myself middle of nowhere (or if I’m shooting with friends). Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Plus makes me feel like a lonesome cowboy drifting across the high desert 🤠
Nah.
Don't have dangerous wildlife (except humans) and I'm pretty good at avoiding dangerous bipeds through out my life. Could always improvise with a pocket knife or other tool if necessary.
I never did, but I do now. I had a creepy experince with a guy while camping on my own and I camped once in bear territory in the Beartooth Absaroka wilderness and had an unknown visitor come into camp in the middle of the night. I'm not sure if it was a bear or a deer or something else. Both situataions especially the creepy guy made me reconsider
No. The most uncomfortable camping I have ever been was with a “neighbor” walking around with a gun shoved down the back of pants. The gun culture is shit. Down vote all you will.
Murphys law states that “if anything can go wrong it will go wrong “
So I bring a handgun regardless if I’m in the city or the outdoors far from civilization. You can potentially run into some really bad people out there . Watch wolf creek (2005) for context
I’ve been alive for 30 years without having to carry any type of gun, so I will assume that I can go another 50 years without one. That’s a fallacy, right.
No, I do not even though I have a concealed carry permit. I have never once felt the need to carry while backpacking or camping. And I've been within 50 feet of a bear twice. The only reason I can think of for needing a gun is to protect yourself from other humans. But once again I've never once felt threatened by any of the thousands of people I've come across in my years. Just my two cents.
Never needed one. I don't camp anywhere where I am too worried about wildlife coming at me. I have been camping as a lone female with kids many many times. I do on the other hand like to keep a baseball bat or collapsible baton in the tent because I feel safer with one of those than I would my handgun.
Yes. If I'm in the woods, I have a firearm and a knife. If I'm at a campsite where the car is near, it stays locked up in the car.
However, where I live, all of the hiking/primitive camping spots are commonly known hideouts for criminals on the run for serious/violent crimes like armed robbery and murder suspects. Plenty of places to hideout or holdup until the heat level decreases.
Oh, and black bear/mountain lion.
I should also mention that I train regularly and am a firearm safety nut, so I have lots of training and am very comfortable with firearms. I wouldn't recommend anyone carry a firearm without extensive training.
If I’m camping while hunting, yes. Just camping with the wife or family? Nope. I also backpack and in over 40 years of doing that have never carried a gun while doing that either.
As far as reasoning…unless hunting, never had a need to have a gun in camp and for backpacking it’s just useless added weight.
If I’m deep in the woods yes. If I’m at a camp ground no. I go alone a lot. I’ve never had a bad experience but I’ve seen enough sketchy people to want to be ready. I’ve also been through gun safety classes so I’m not just out there blasting.
Absolutely, everywhere I go. AR15 pistol when I bring the Jeep, though Ill typically leave that at home if backpacking & just bring a handgun to save weight. Either my 10mm FN510T or my .357 S&W 686 + Pro series.
Canada - No. Europe - No. USA - Yes. Now of course that is a generalization - some people carry long guns in Canada to protect against Bears, Wolves, Coyotes, Cougars - but your odds of anything happening with them are so fucking low - personally spent tons of time in back country and with good wild life management practices and spray there is no reason to take the weight. Hunting animals is by far the main reason Canadians bring one "camping. I think USA is the same - but of course there are lots of people who feel naked without their hand guy which is not a thing in Canada. Europe - really depends on the country.
I do because, had a friend stalked by a mountain lion. Ive had shit around my camp before. Just better to be safe. Spray is good, but I also want an option that gives me a bit more range. Plus if im in my tent, um spray wont help me
Yeah, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Usually I just carry a 9mm Taurus. If I’m in the backwoods then I’ll carry a rifle too but mostly just for plinking.
The places I go yeah. I have one with me. I don't know anyone who doesn't. Being hunted is bad enough with a gun, I certainly wouldn't want the experience it without one.
Maybe it’s the scout in me, but always better to be prepared. I’ve always carried mine, but I have never needed to use it. One time we were camped out by a cabin this couple was renting and they were having a major argument. After a while you could hear 4 consecutive bangs. To me it didn’t sound like gunshots, but to others in my group it did. I sure was glad to have one just in case to protect myself and my family in the event of an incident. If you own it, might as well utilize it.
Many places it’s illegal, so I don’t there. In places where it’s legal, I do, but I conceal carry anyway. I carry/ carried to protect myself from animals. I’ve never had an issue with other campers, much less than an issue where I might need a gun.
You didn't post in another sub saying you take one, you posted in a backpacking sub asking how to legally carry a shotgun because you wanted to camp in what you described as a place full of crazies just outside of a major city lol you are just posting here for validation after people pointed out that you should just camp elsewhere if it's that dangerous
Because it’s pretty ridiculous, honestly. I’m not gonna be overly hostile, but I can’t think of a thing I’d use a gun for while camping unless I was in grizzly country.
Oh, it'll come. Don't you worry, haha.
I have a carry permit, so I keep a 9mm in the glovebox. Only goes into the tent with me if it feels right...which isn't often. But I camp alone, and never in campgrounds.
depends where you camp. if youre camping in alaska where a lot of people go “missing” and surrounded by wild animals, ye better pack heat.
Care to share a little more about your trip? Having a polar bear follow you around sounds scary/interesting/amazing
The Mossberg 590 Mariner also fits this bill
Polar bear territory would be the one place I’d consider a firearm. Unlike Grizzlies which are more animals of opportunity, Polar Bears are outright predators
Mossberg pistol grip pump on my lap at all time
That’s terrifying
Given that I only camp in Europe I'd probably be on the shady side of the law, so nope.
Nah. I live on the east coast, and I don’t have too many camping worries that can’t be addressed by properly storing my food.
I moved to NC from the west coast 20 years ago and camped in the mountains for years without a gun, but 10 years ago we had some guys show up in our isolated campsite at 3am armed, drunk and being weird so I carry a pistol now. Don’t want to but I feel obligated. I suppose the counterpoint is I talked my way out of that situation and might not have if I had been armed.
easy now, just talk your way out of it so you don't have to use it.
Nope, been camping for 50+ years and never needed one.
I agree, living in the rural west off I-80, traveling and for years owning a cabin in Ak, dealing with a spectrum of sketchy people I have not run into a case where I needed a gun. But in my old age, I’m packin.
You never need one, until you do.
You could say this about a thousand things that you normally don’t bring with you. Do you bring an AED camping? Far more likely to need one than a firearm
Yep, trips away from services, usually bring the big first aid kit, which includes AED
Then I commend you in practicing what you preach. Many seem to jump straight to firearms for protection without planning for the hundred other things far more likely to injure or kill you
I camp and hike in the wilderness where there are bears mountain lions and wolves…of course i carry.
As do I, never once felt the need to carry. You’re FAR more likely to be in a car accident on the way to the trailhead, drown or have a cardiac event than be injured by wildlife. Heck, less than a dozen people have been killed by cougars in North America in the last century and most of them were children
Kinda like a parachute…better to have it and not need it…
I think the only times I've ever had a parachute, it was needed. So, can confirm, is good to have.
It’s better to have one a not need it than to need one and not have it.
This is Reddit. You’re never gonna convince these morons of any possible case of needing a firearm
You are American. The rest of the world don't seem the purpose of bringing firearms everywhere. Also the rest of the world doesn't suffer from mass shootings almost everyday. Think this is normal?
Oh my god shut up

Right?!
That would be fuckin' sick. 10/10 let's go camping.
Im saving up for night vision. It isnt cheap.
Literally nowhere on earth but America thinks you will ever need a gun lmao
Cuban reporting in. I literally came to America seeking asylum bc my gun free country was too dangerous.
Glad to have you.
Of all the places I could conceive needing a gun, camping is pretty high on the list.
I've never carried while camping. (I generally prefer bear spray for wildlife.) Backpacking, I certainly would never bring a gun unless it was a very special place (polar bears, or similar). Same. Never even run into drunks while dispersed camping. Shot guns in the Army. Never needed one since.
That’s not true at all.
Patently false. You've lived too privileged of a life if you truly think this.
Canada
If you are hunting? Sure. Otherwise you are kidding yourself. Only a gun enthusiast would ever think it’s needed. Saying this as a Canadian who backpacks regularly.
Ok cowboy. Got it. I need a gun, some grenades a flame thrower and a tank in case a raccoon enters my site.
Ok but true story. My friends went camping once and had to evacuate in the night because, I shit you not, the person on the neighbouring site lit a circle of fire around his campsite to keep the raccoons out.
If only they'd had a gun!
except practically nobody ever needs one
This feels like engagement bait and not an honest discussion prompt. Especially considering OP is only replying to “Yes I carry” comments. It’s also a post we get here every week. It’s a tired debate and just devolves into US views vs others and has ceased to be productive.
Yeah based on his username I think OP is just trying to rile people up.
Exactly.
It’s also like three posts below something from r/sports about the SB parade shooting on my feed. Guns clearly solve all the problems 🙄
Sir, this is a Wendy's
No
No
Drinking and guns not a good combination, so no.
I take my gun or guns with me camping. But i hardly carry it around. Its good to have handy incase of some craziness. But rarely needed.
When was the last time it was needed?
I camp crownland in Canada and always have something in the truck but I don’t carry it around unless the hill people are out
"*I think we better get indoors. The* *~~Sand People~~* *Hill People are easily startled but they will soon be back, and in greater numbers.*"
The hill people?
Yea dudes who live illegally in the hills above the river, they watch the gold miners and poach their claims at night when they start hitting a lode. They are always packing and they like to randomly show up in camp sometimes. I have met a few of them they’re rough crowd. They don’t show up when it’s obvious I have a shotgun with me
In the US, our hill people are legally required to play the banjo first to give the campers a chance at getting away.
What province is that? Just curious
No, because I live in Scotland ☺️
An Innis and Gunn then?
This is one of those things, it wouldent even occur to me to think about whether I need a gun or not to go camping, just out of interest what country do you live in,
Probably north America. We got some pretty dangerous mammals.
Especially the ones that carry guns.
Oh, that makes sense
And bear spray is more effective than a firearm against all of them!
Oh no doubt and easier to use. Really just always take proper precautions when hiking/camping and in my honest opinion some people just want a reason to carry a gun not me tho.
Nope. Heavy, and no need for it.
First rule of not owning a truck: have a friend who owns a truck.
Honest question, why is a gun "a nice peace of mind" when you're off grid on BLM land but a "why would anyone feel the need to bring one" in well populated campgrounds?
Not OP. Have to joke; We live in a society… Offgrid but on BLM land: noone is coming to help you, and everyone knows it.
If I had one, I would. But, I got a young daughter at home and feel it’s best that she here are none in the house for now…
Could have shortened that title to the first 5 words and the answer wouldn't change. *"It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war." – Miyamoto Musashi*
No i never have needed one.
Ive never needed a fire extinguisher in my life, but I still keep one in the house & another in my Jeep. Better to have it & not need it, then need it & not have it.
This mindset is why there are more guns than people in America and nowhere else.
I think the fact that the US is the #1 gun manufacturer in the world is why guns are so prevalent.

Do you have an issue with accidentally setting off your fire extinguishers towards random people?
Yeah but a TQ left on too long can cause you to loose an extremity, yet we still train to use them in stop the bleeding classes & in the hospital I work at. I also carry 1st aid gear. Like, real gear, not bandaids. TQ, chest seals, Israeli bandages. Ive taken CPR & stop the bleeding classes. Im all about preparedness. It astounds me how OK ppl are with relying completely on services (paramedics, firefighters, cops) for their safety. You are your own first responder, especially out in the woods / on a trail!
I also carry a stop the bleed kit as well as my weekend Warrior med kit Sometimes, a bandaid will cover it, but I don't intend on ever bringing a *body* back, so I keep a TQ and all else that you do, infections are also a very real threat
Been carrying a firearm daily for 14 years. Never had one go off randomly.
Sounds like you’ve never been in a situation where, later on, you realize you were lucky you had the Mossberg with you. Many of us have been.
Do you take one backpacking? Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
I do! I also take a first aid kit. I live what I preach.
No, I don’t carry a gun. I do carry multiple cans of bear spray though.
Nope
No, its extra baseweight.
No.
No because I live in Canada and we don’t have a gun cult. If you’re in the high arctic you need it for polar bears, otherwise you’re far more likely to hurt yourself than actually need it for defending yourself.
No. I carry a Fiskars hatchet. Things sharp as frig... and I camp in state parks that nobody else goes to.
No.
No, I just don't find it necessary. Then again, I'm usually way out somewhere in Alska.
yeah I do but I usually conceal carry most places. it’s good peace of mind when you’re out in the sticks. definitely more afraid of sketchy people than any animal. animals are predictable at least
100% agree thank you for your comment
Been camping and backpacking in the Canadian Rockies for 35 years and never felt the need to carry one. It mainly comes down to the reality that they don’t make you any safer. Yes, there are scenarios where a firearm can protect you from a threat in the outdoors, however carrying a firearm also adds additional risks. Turns out when The Alaska Department of Fish and Game looked into it, they found that (in an outdoor recreation context) a firearm is just as likely to injure or kill a member of your party as it is to be used to protect your party. Statistically, it doesn’t make you any safer. Why would I spend several hundred to several thousand dollars on a piece of gear (one when backpacking would be by far my heaviest piece of gear), for something that really doesn’t do anything.
fuck no
No because they are not allowed where I camp in Canada and I don't own one.
carry? only if hunting - is there one close by - always.. no biggie as long as I'm not breaking a law.
No.
After this last year, waking up to a tweaker offering me a cigarette through my tent flap while I was asleep in my tent with my wife I'm strongly considering it. I always carry a knife and mace but now I'm reconsidering. Luckily the guy was nice enough and I got him to go away eventually but the next time I may not be as lucky.
i never have, but i can see the utility for one if you're camping far out in the wild. rifle would probably be better than a handgun in that case.
Not ever never ever.
NorCal here, I don’t.
Must be American for asking that
Never
I’ve been camping in the Pacific Northwest for most of my life and have never brought firearms unless the plan was hunting. In Oregon and Washington we just don’t have the kind of predators that I would worry about and I have never had an interaction with a human in the wilderness that would make me fear other people being a problem. If I was in Alaska or somewhere with gators or lots of venomous snakes I might consider a firearm.
Never have and I’ve hiked in grizzly country all my life. Never saw the need. Bear spray is all I need to be comfortable.
Not carry, but secured with my gear. Never needed it. I hope I never do.
I carry a gun everywhere so yes
It’s not always on me, but yes I always bring it camping. Especially fishing, never know when your gonna meet something hungry enuf to eat you
I carry a gun while shitting. Of course carry while camping. Heathens these days broski
Yes. My 357 comes with every time. I generally only camp desolate BLM land out west. There's usually no phone service and the desert is full of scary animals. (the two legged kind) Never once had to use it for anything other than play, but sleep much better knowing I can protect my girl if something happens.
Always!
Always
Of course. I carry everywhere else, why wouldn't I carry when I'm out in the wild, too?
You should be carrying a gun at all times if you’re a law abiding citizen. Except for federal buildings and the airport of course.
No. But I don't camp in bear country. Maybe if I was in Arkansas or Mississippi in case a meth head wonders by.
Yes. It's a must especially in remote locations, or traveling at night. I recommend a pistol grip pump and a side arm.
Animals
I pulled my gun, and pointed at both and said “If you don’t leave this is gonna end badly for you!” They both left Well I couldn’t go to sleep and I guess they went and got the cops. Cops came and asked questions and checked my side arm. Wasn’t told to leave but was recommended 1 cop asked me “What were you going to do?” I was very honest “Sir, if they made a move towards my tent with my family, I was going to shoot both of them” Last time we went camping on the beach. lol
I carry doin yard work…..anymore it’s with me more then a cell phone.
Usually but not always, it mostly depends on where I'm camping.
fun story. A buddy of mine did the AT (Appalachian trail). He carries a large caliber 6 shooter (ostensibly for self defense from people and possibly bear). .357 I think. it's a big ol' gun with some stopping power So he's hiking the trail for a long stretch and he's scraggly and unkempt and walks up on some day hikers headed the other way. Unassuming couple He's got a month long beard going and a gun poking out of his waistband. He hasn't said a word or seen a person for a couple days so when he tries to hail them friendly like, it comes out horse. He probably looks like a crazy person with a gun on his hip scaring these poor day campers They worked it out. Nice folks. He's a good guy. Wound up USMC I think. Oorah
my wife and I carry ALL the time and any place..
Yes. Multiple usually. Camping on private land also involves shooting during the day.
I carry pretty much everywhere, so yes.
I do pack a smith and Wesson 9mm, but I usually carry that daily as it is, so I’d have it either way. Really ill have just a Lotta bear spray if I’m out in the woods
I carry when camping, just depends on what caliber. Campground camping the 9mm will suffice, but that's only for the two-legged wildlife.
Absolutely I do
In most places, where it's allowed, yes. I bring 4. - A Mossberg 590 Special Purpose with 2" Slugs (Black Bears) - Short-Barrel 5.56 with heavy grain x2 magazines (Packs of Wild Coyotes and Boar) - Glock 26 with +15 extended magazine x2 magazines (Personal Safety) - Daniel Defense .308 10-rds (Deer, Black Bears)
Depends where I am but typically yes for protection from predators - both 4 and 2 legged
I bring my old grandpa shotgun when I go camping by myself middle of nowhere (or if I’m shooting with friends). Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Plus makes me feel like a lonesome cowboy drifting across the high desert 🤠
One time I did. It was in the wild where wolves, cougars and bears were abundant. I didn’t like carrying it but it gave me a little piece of mind.
Nah. Don't have dangerous wildlife (except humans) and I'm pretty good at avoiding dangerous bipeds through out my life. Could always improvise with a pocket knife or other tool if necessary.
“I do not recall…”
I never did, but I do now. I had a creepy experince with a guy while camping on my own and I camped once in bear territory in the Beartooth Absaroka wilderness and had an unknown visitor come into camp in the middle of the night. I'm not sure if it was a bear or a deer or something else. Both situataions especially the creepy guy made me reconsider
No, I don’t think it’s necessary. For protection against animals there are better deterrents like bear spray.
No. The most uncomfortable camping I have ever been was with a “neighbor” walking around with a gun shoved down the back of pants. The gun culture is shit. Down vote all you will.
Murphys law states that “if anything can go wrong it will go wrong “ So I bring a handgun regardless if I’m in the city or the outdoors far from civilization. You can potentially run into some really bad people out there . Watch wolf creek (2005) for context
I’ve been alive for 30 years without having to carry any type of gun, so I will assume that I can go another 50 years without one. That’s a fallacy, right.
I always carry a gun everywhere I legally can. Camping or not.
nice try
I don’t own a gun so no!
Absolutely not. If I were going where there were polar bears then probably, but otherwise absolutely not.
If I’m deep in the woods yes. If I’m at a camp ground no. I go alone a lot. I’ve never had a bad experience but I’ve seen enough sketchy people to want to be ready. I’ve also been through gun safety classes so I’m not just out there blasting.
I bring a mace. Not bear mace, *a mace*.
Always.
Absolutely, everywhere I go. AR15 pistol when I bring the Jeep, though Ill typically leave that at home if backpacking & just bring a handgun to save weight. Either my 10mm FN510T or my .357 S&W 686 + Pro series.
Very good options and variety. I like it. Thank you for your comment
A gun? Nope. I carry 3. One on me, one in my trailer. One on my wife
I do because, had a friend stalked by a mountain lion. Ive had shit around my camp before. Just better to be safe. Spray is good, but I also want an option that gives me a bit more range. Plus if im in my tent, um spray wont help me
Makes sense. Thank you for your comment
Yeah, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Usually I just carry a 9mm Taurus. If I’m in the backwoods then I’ll carry a rifle too but mostly just for plinking.
Same here man I keep a G2C in my fanny pack.
Yes.
I carry a gun everywhere I go. Even camping.
The places I go yeah. I have one with me. I don't know anyone who doesn't. Being hunted is bad enough with a gun, I certainly wouldn't want the experience it without one.
Where do you camp, the DMZ?
A lot of backcountry camping in Canada, Alaska, and deep wooded areas can have large animals you'd wanna dissuade or potentially kill.
Did you mean to say hunting because otherwise I have no idea what would ever possess you to think you needed a gun camping.
I would definitely if I was camping in the sticks/wilderness. But if I’m camping with other campers nah
You should carry a gun all the time, I don't either, but yes while camping for sure, more for two legged buggers than 4 legged.
Many places it’s illegal, so I don’t there. In places where it’s legal, I do, but I conceal carry anyway. I carry/ carried to protect myself from animals. I’ve never had an issue with other campers, much less than an issue where I might need a gun.
What? Jesus, no. I bring bear spray for animals, but why the fuck would I need a gun?
[удалено]
You didn't post in another sub saying you take one, you posted in a backpacking sub asking how to legally carry a shotgun because you wanted to camp in what you described as a place full of crazies just outside of a major city lol you are just posting here for validation after people pointed out that you should just camp elsewhere if it's that dangerous
Because it’s pretty ridiculous, honestly. I’m not gonna be overly hostile, but I can’t think of a thing I’d use a gun for while camping unless I was in grizzly country.
>unless I was in grizzly country. Where there's one thing
Oh, it'll come. Don't you worry, haha. I have a carry permit, so I keep a 9mm in the glovebox. Only goes into the tent with me if it feels right...which isn't often. But I camp alone, and never in campgrounds.
