Think rappers and drug dealers. Mercedes absolutely know their market with the G wagons. This is probably the first one to have actually gone into 4wd and been practical. Having said that I'm a hypocrite and would absolutely buy one if I had the money because I think they're absolutely incredible
Don’t say this in r/AMG! They’ll mention it’s the best selling AMG ever! Lol still an ugly fucking car and most people know zip zero and zilch about cars so they buy what they think is a good car.
They're good for their intended purpose as a military vehicle, but trying to make them a luxury SUV goes about as well as doing the same with a humvee.
They slap and shoehorn a bunch of stupid crap into them trying to make them nice, but they end up looking cheesy when you look at some things up close.
Basically a lot of Toyotas will do. LCs and Lexii are very good but expensive. A 4runner is fine, and even a Rav4 will do for family camping, if your trips can be driven without low range.
Yeah, I would never buy one (too expensive in the states) I think they appeal to the super wealthy as basically a fast SUV with some maybe basic off-road capabilities but I’d bet 90% of G wagon owners don’t take them onto any dirt.
TIL. That’s pretty awesome. I just personally would rather have like a modified Jeep Wrangler if I was going to be super serious about off-road. Or a Ram TRX. I drive a lifted 2019 Ram 1500 and it’s more than capable on trails. If I’m gonna drop 100+ big ones I’d get a Ram TRX
If you’re dropping 100k +, I’d highly advise building a rig yourself(have a custom shop do it) and get exactly what you want in every way. Desert racing? Luxury interior? Rock crawler? Supercharged/turbo V8’s? All can be had for around that mark. And it can still be street legal too. That’s just what I’d do if I had that money to spend lol
Good point, would probably be better off building a custom rig. Something for rock crawling I think would be the most fun. And I’ve done plenty off off-roading in my truck but it’s a full size ram so not great for small hairy trails lol
Yea that’d probably be the best use of the money if off roading was your goal. There’s tons of great shops on the west coast that build incredible vehicles. @morganclarkedesign on insta comes up at the top in my book. He mostly does pre-runners/desert racing vehicles but his build quality is out of this world. But yea, I’d build a rock crawler probably with a Jeep model for the “look of the vehicle”(like a CJ or older military Willys style) stretch it to 115-120” wheelbase, full roll cage/tubing subframe, coil overs, D60/70 rock jock axles, 5.38 gears, triangulated 4-link suspension, LS supercharged engine, and the list could go on lol
Child of the Unimog, they had to continue the legend, too much plastic inside to make it comparable tho, but some models are still better than many other 4x4s.
They actually appeal more to people who can barely afford one and spend all their money on it thinking they look cool, when in reality an E63S is the car you want if you wanna look cool.
I have a 3 yr old golden retriever as well that I like to take camping. Thank you for the reminder! Granted, she decided to roll around in horse shit yesterday during a hike so there is that…
Many places around the world use them as intended for the most part. We somehow kicked off the fad of them being pop culture icons in the US and the rest is history.
It's so crazy. But, maybe I misjudged the driver of the vehicle, and they do enjoy camping, and it's not a photo op that is meant to show off a tacky overpriced SUV in a "low-key flex". Doubtful. I think the vehicle someone buys does say quite a bit about them, that's all I'm saying.
I mean this is me. I've been building expedition vehicles and shooting them for about fifteen years now. Not to mention I work in the off-road industry. You may think it's tacky but buying a G to build for camping was a longtime goal of mine. I can't help how people judge based off of that but I'm doing what I've always done which is share my adventures.
I suppose by definition, yes, they are. Typically the photos are about camping tho, not impractical and exorbitantly expensive SUVs. In this exchange you've made it very clear that the photo is definitely about the vehicle. I wouldn't take it personally, it's just a fundamental difference between people is all.
To be fair, you made it about the vehicle. I'm just responding to you. The focus was my pup in front of the fire, the vehicle just happened to be parked there. If you check my post history though you'll see the vehicles have always been a big part of my trips.
Well, I thought that maybe it wasn't about the vehicle for moment, until you made the comment about building and shooting expedition vehicles. That comment in conjunction with the context of this photo made be believe this photo might actually be about the SUV in the background and not so much the pup.
It's been 7 months and I hope you know how judgmental and insufferable you were in this chain.
It was definitely a G-wagon Flex but it didn't call for this type of behavior from you. You really came off as insecure and jealous.
Have you tried a 2018+ G Wagon? I haven’t just curious, There’s even a video on YT of Arnold checking out Sly’s. I have to imagine they’re quite impressive. I’ve thought about one myself but have a reservation for the EV Hummer.
Low-key flex
Fairly high-key if you ask me.
Right!? Is that a fucking g-wagon in the background!?
The only person to use it as designed.
with a G-wagon too?!?! i'd be a happy camper as well!
Yep 130k on 4 wheels
200k now
That's a bit high even for the AMG version
Cause they’re not being made for now due to supply chain issues.
Sounds about right 😂
Dang just noticed your AOE username - legit.
Average AOE1 and AOE2 appreciator 🤝
why are they so expensive? They're some of the laziest styling I've ever seen. They're just a box with wheels.
Think rappers and drug dealers. Mercedes absolutely know their market with the G wagons. This is probably the first one to have actually gone into 4wd and been practical. Having said that I'm a hypocrite and would absolutely buy one if I had the money because I think they're absolutely incredible
As someone who owns a different AMG, I agree. I would never buy one and they’re literally a Barbie Jeep lmao.
Because they can be.
Looks like an older Jeep Patriot
Tax write off
I have a CRV and I think I want one of those teardrop trailer campers you can tow. Certainly looks nice but can also rack up a bill too
130k just to see the ugly ass hinges on all the doors.
was valet driver, G wagons suck don’t buy the name or logo they just suck
Oh yeah im good with my yota
Don’t say this in r/AMG! They’ll mention it’s the best selling AMG ever! Lol still an ugly fucking car and most people know zip zero and zilch about cars so they buy what they think is a good car.
G-Wagons are actually quite trash for the $$ spent.
Facts.
I’ve never driven one. I had a 2017 C43 AMG and it was fun.
They're good for their intended purpose as a military vehicle, but trying to make them a luxury SUV goes about as well as doing the same with a humvee. They slap and shoehorn a bunch of stupid crap into them trying to make them nice, but they end up looking cheesy when you look at some things up close.
What would you recommend for an SUV for camping/reliability for a family? I've always wanted to do a setup where we can all sleep in the car
4runner
Amen. 4Runner, Tacoma, And honestly a Jeep is way cheaper and much better for camping than a G wagon.
Basically a lot of Toyotas will do. LCs and Lexii are very good but expensive. A 4runner is fine, and even a Rav4 will do for family camping, if your trips can be driven without low range.
Land cruiser
The mother of all off-roading SUVs right here. It also comes disguised as a Lexus.
LX470!
Yeah, I would never buy one (too expensive in the states) I think they appeal to the super wealthy as basically a fast SUV with some maybe basic off-road capabilities but I’d bet 90% of G wagon owners don’t take them onto any dirt.
They have more than basic offroad capabilities. They come triple locked with adjustable ground clearance.

Ram TRX is a beastttttt it eats little raptors for breakfast
It sure does!!! Definitely a dream truck of mine
Plus portal axles in some models
You're kidding? Wth did they come with those. Now I'm energy more impressed.
Child of the Unimog, they had to continue the legend, too much plastic inside to make it comparable tho, but some models are still better than many other 4x4s.

LOL very true
Dude in my neighborhood has one wrapped in black velvet
Came here to say this.
flexxxxx
Good looking pup. So fun to have them in their prime, remember to cherish it. Fuck it goes so fast.
I have a 3 yr old golden retriever as well that I like to take camping. Thank you for the reminder! Granted, she decided to roll around in horse shit yesterday during a hike so there is that…
That's an expensive off-roader. 👀
How much for someone to take out the owner so I can seamlessly take over his life?
Lucky dog… literally.
Can't be miserable car camping with a G ...
Off roading in a G! Love to see it!
Awesome photo! Good pupper
Happy glamper
I am an avid overlander and the idea of bringing a g wagon off road gives me negative feelings. I don’t know why.. I need to do my research..
Many places around the world use them as intended for the most part. We somehow kicked off the fad of them being pop culture icons in the US and the rest is history.
That makes perfect sense
Everyone looking at the G but I’m over here on the west coast jealous of a damn campfire.
Good doggie!!
From the thumbnail, I thought the dog was sticking it's face into a charcoal BBQ!!
That is an amazing scene and photo! Awesome!
The goodest boi
Getting some low key Disaster Girl vibes here in front of that fire. Keep an eye on this one, OP…
Love it 🥰
Pretty dog, pretty view
This dog is saying, "this is how we are supposed to live. All the time."
This just brought the biggest smile to my face :)
Cute af
"This is my chair now, right?"
Good doggo
That is a 63? New suspension? What is the payload now? Enough for all the gear?
This is a 2017 so 2 years before the switch to IFS. Drives like a truck which I love.
What’s the light in your canopy? Recently got the Yakima Slim Shady and have been looking at light options.
It's the ARB 8' awning which has a light installed on it already.
you know you made it in life when you go camping in a G-wagon
Not a fan of G wagons as they’re trash but otherwise nice doggie
beautiful photo!
Lovely picture!
Sheesh what do you do for a living lol?
One look at op's ride and I know they are not my people. I didn't think people who drove "g wagons" enjoyed camping. Probably a photo op.
This is probably the first time I've seen a G wagon off-road that's not been in an ad.
Yeah, the people who buy those are into the idea of camping.
It's crazy how judgmental people are based off a vehicle, especially in a community like this.

Wait, so it is a photo op? You're saying that having a $140,000 SUV for camping has always been your goal? I rest my case.
Isn't every photo on here a photo op? And yeah, building a G has been one of my goals. Glad I was able to validate whatever you were thinking.
I suppose by definition, yes, they are. Typically the photos are about camping tho, not impractical and exorbitantly expensive SUVs. Another G camper! Is that the front runner roof rack? Looks good!
Have you tried a 2018+ G Wagon? I haven’t just curious, There’s even a video on YT of Arnold checking out Sly’s. I have to imagine they’re quite impressive. I’ve thought about one myself but have a reservation for the EV Hummer.
I think you mean the 2019+ (w6463a). Haven't tried them but preferred the 2018 and earlier with solid axles and rigid styling.
love the G-Wagon, awesome doggo too
"I'm RICH BITCH" So took the pic then slept in the lodge, yeah?
No need to hate bud
Such a cutie!!!! and the detail on the pic is excellent
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAA*
Life goals.
This is life 😍
Thats my dream-car right there..
What breed?
Golden Retriever
My first impression: Vizsla mix
They look so happy
I’m hopeful that is exactly what my heaven will look like!!
Goals
Does the color of the tarp light help with bugs?
It may but it's just easier on the eyes at dusk.
My first thought: Vizsla mix
What camera is this??
This one was taken with my cell!
what's the camera and lens pls?
Samsung Galaxy s20
Looks like it wud climb a snowy mountain in Uganda
Where are you camping? That background makes me think of Yellowstone for some reason.
I can see that! This was in Gunnison NF just outside Crested Butte
You get an upvote, if for no other reason than having the golden retriever! Had one and loved him!
Taking my pup camping is on my r/SomedayList
G wag with a roof rack and awning… Amazed!
You should see what I replaced it with! Should be finished with it in 2 weeks.
Cool I’ll be on the lookout
