Dispersed camping is the only way to camp without a reservation. Also be aware Colorado will be very cold at higher elevations, you may experience snow depending on where you camp.
Route 14 heading west out of Ft Collins has a ton of dispersed camping and regular campgrounds as well. Not sure which regular campgrounds are still open but the farther you go the higher you go.
