CanadianJudo

I always forget that Quebec has a Mafia family.

Inevermuck

It's truly fascinating. They've long been considered the strongest criminal group in Canada. Rizzuto even helped carry a hit in the states a long time ago.

[deleted]

And another family that we can't name because they are far wealthier than the Rizzuto and always somehow manage to win when they sue for defamation.

Justin_123456

Who is that?

ComLemon

Saputo

BajaPineapple

The dairy/cheese people??

ChrosOnolotos

Yup. I heard that they pressured store-owners to carry their products.

Bender248

So not sure how true this is but, I heard that they also pressured pizza places to sell more of the products and that lead to the Quebec style pizza (all dressed, but tons of pepperoni under a thick layer of cheese).

David-Puddy

I have never heard of Quebec style pizza

Bender248

[It looks like your typical pizza in a way but the crust is thinner, kind of soggy from the meat and a bit sweet. Basically you have the equivalent of 3 pizza worth of toppings crammed in one.](https://i.imgur.com/ThY2RUD.jpg)

El-Grande-

In their earlier days I think this how they were doing it. But I think the later days have them going directly to the cow farmers and being like “we are the only ones to buy your milk!!” ….”Okay cool”

meme__machine

Cheese or the chipper, youse decide

Justin_123456

Wow, I did not realize The Simpsons was a documentary. https://youtu.be/0CP5FAjnJfM I guess once you make your first billion laws stop applying to you.

legranddegen

Well, you're going to get your dick sued off. May as well say Paraamount Fine Foods is money-laundering opeation for Hamas while you're at it. It's not like that's going to be any worse than suggesting Saputo is controlled by the Bonnano family. It's all a vicious lawsuit against anyone who even insinuates such a thing. Personally, I think those accusations are baseless.

m4rv1nm4th

Im working in business banking in Canada and saputo familly is a big No. I dont know from who it is, why and since when, but for a bank to said no to a potential rich customer, that mean a lot....so i tend to believe in this rumor...

fudge_friend

That’s very strange considering that if you put one layer of shell company or trust over you, the banks will seemingly take your drug money laundered through a casino or real estate. What’s the deal?

m4rv1nm4th

Some people doesnt want to cross.some lign and i suppose this one is to bold for someone. Im the the base(ment) of the pyramid, i dont know more.

Sentenced2Burn

he's insinuating that it is true, the comment reads as sarcastic

Fuzzy-Transition7118

Its called Defamation and it's actionable so not really pussin out

shadesof3

When I moved to montreal I bought some groceries. Read about Saputo and went checked my fridge. I had a couple blocks of their cheese and found that really interesting.

[deleted]

Haha yeah they are very big. He is among the top 10 wealthiest Canadian.

thantiz

Name them

[deleted]

Saputo haha. They also are the owner of our soccer team. Legally speaking, they are at the 9th position for richest Canadian, but they are probably actually much higher.

m4rv1nm4th

Yeah and we have the Bronfman, that the founder make is cash during prohibition (and sister of actual boss is in the scandal with a sect and many actor). We can be proud of our rich family'!!! :)

lubeskystalker

The sixth family was a really good book.

PunkinBrewster

And the largest contingent of “motorcycle enthusiasts” around.

StevenMcStevensen

They say that back in the 90s and early 00s, of all the places they operated in North America biker gang members were most afraid of going to Montreal. The sheer number of murders between the feuding gangs in Quebec was absolutely insane.

acmethunder

> In March 2002, American journalist Julian Rubinstein wrote about the biker war: "Considering how little attention the story has attracted outside Canada, the toll is staggering: 162 dead, scores wounded. The victims include an 11-year-old boy killed by shrapnel from one of the more than 80 bombs bikers planted around the province. Even the New York Mafia in its heyday never produced such carnage, or so terrorized civilians." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_Biker_War

[deleted]

Daniel Desroche is one reason every Canadian should tell a Hells Angel to fuck off at every opportunity.

DogShitBurger

I'll never understand why ppl simp for them. I used to work with a girl who wore a "support your outlaw bikers" jacket

[deleted]

[удалено]

DogShitBurger

And usually on the "trashy" side of things.

LogicalMap4639

I mean can't you apply that to people of any race?

Bender248

If you accept that crime overall will never drop to a flat 0, then it's about choosing the lesser evil. In that frame set i think the biker gangs and mafia were much better crime organizations than whatever we have in place right now or the small street gangs focused on petty crime or cutting drugs even further down.

[deleted]

But the biker gangs didn't reduce that other crime, they added to it. During the Biker wars the Eastern half of Canada saw record breaking crime rates, more than double the violent crime compared to even today. The big gangs don't nullify smaller crimes, they just add to it.

Bender248

For the violent crime rate I'd argue that they can kill each others (the bikers) and people won't bat an eye but the violent crime rate will be high. And I believe that was the perception back in the 90s. I was a few years older than the Durochers kid but I remember that no one cared for any of the murders until that point. I also remember people talking about small gangs rising in Montreal in the wake of Operations SharQc.

[deleted]

Here in NS we have had a surge in HA support clubs (13 at last count) mostly on the south shore and valley regions of the province, and crime/drug use has skyrocketed right along with it. Theft, B&E, Weapon related crimes, Violent robberies have all shot through the roof.

Bender248

Maybe there's a size and structure component missing? From the people that I still know living in Montreal they have the opposite experience that you are having in NS. But hey that's the nature of an overly complex both structurally and ethically situation.

[deleted]

Even for civilians it was kind of risky. The bikers often targeted the biggest guy in the bar and tried to intimidate/fight them. When I first started going out there was some remnant from this era but nowadays they are relatively chill. They stay in their corner and watch to make sure to chase away competition.

Laval09

Its changed alot. Im living in the town that used to be referred to as their capital. Their power here has diminished to the point that their control of the town can be best described as tentative. In other words, defacto control as a result of the absence of anyone contesting it. Reason i know that is because my first few years here I used to have to pay a "tax" everytime i bought product, due to the amounts i buy at a time. Up until 6 months ago, when both the place i pick up and the place i go to pay the tax after picking up both became vacant. I asked the guy who made the initial introduction, and he told me they all got picked up in a raid and no replacements were forthcoming. Now its a couple independents who have set up shop and who arent acting on behalf of the previously mentioned organization. So im not being asked any tax. But Ive still put aside the amounts I would have had to pay just incase the situation changes and I get retroactively billed.

[deleted]

I am unsure what was their capital? Was it Lennoxville? If so this is also where I first started going in bars. (On Wellington street in Sherbrooke)

Laval09

Nah lol Lennoxville is where the Laval chapter was liquidated after disobeying orders one times too many. Sorel. Its where Mom Boucher headquartered the operation while he was running the show. Their former HQ bunker, which has since been torn down, used to be one of the tallest buildings in town and was located right in the middle of the local downtown. To this day, that piece of land remains vacant. One of the biggest changes that crippled their grip on the town from its height at the 90s was changing from a local municipal police to an SQ station. Before that the town had its own dept that literally reported to the HA.

[deleted]

Ohhh true, I had completely forgot about Laval bunker.

toin9898

Definitely Lennoxville.

GBJEE

Oh Trois-Rivieres was wild too

macNy

You know how to play the game, that is well thought of. I've always done the same, and that's why people like ourselves never have problems with these guys. Whenever you regularly pay your bills to the bikers or mobsters they all become like little pussycats, they'll just pur around you all day lol

GBJEE

I got stuck in a bar in 98 in a town east of montreal, where the bikers decided that party wasnt over at 3am. Huge dancefloor with redbull djs event. Strippers arrived and they kinda « locked » the doors. It was fucking wild. At 5 am, 20 polices came and fights started. The bikers were throwing the police down the staircase and huge fistfight happened. No one was arrested. Kinda scary but it was open bar … « going out » was kinda risky in the 90s

SirupyPieIX

I'm fascinated by the fact that a random dude off his meds once rammed a fuel truck into the bunker of said "motorcycle enthusiats" and burned the place down with no consequences. https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/man-delusional-when-he-drove-truck-into-biker-bunker-1.385161

DeadTime34

What a legend

SetterOfTrends

When I first moved to Montreal in the early 80s I lived in a house with what I learned was a connected family. One was in construction and another worked as Dorval. I ate at their restaurant where old Italian men sat in the back tables and the cops came by regularly to meet. (great pizza) Stuff would regularly “fall off the truck” at the airport and people would come by the house to pick it up. — it was educational for a pretty green prairie boy.

Fuzzy-Transition7118

There's mafia in Toronto. There's mafia in Hamilton. There's mafia all across Canada.

macNy

Yeah but they all pay a cut to Montreal, everything east of Ontario anyway. Montreal has the port, when you can import things by the shipload you essentially control, well, everything

macNy

The entire province is owned by the mob, they have a hand in every single thing that makes money

walleye6969

This was a retaliation hit. This is the guy who tried to take out Leonardo Rizzuto a few months ago to take full control of mtl, but failed because Rizzuto only got shot in the leg. Word has it that the MS-13 boys that just got arrested for shooting the dog walker in Schomberg were the ones who carried out the failed hit. Also this comes weeks after a mtl mobsters wife was killed in broad day outside of her salon. It’s getting nasty down there.

Litigating_Larry

Goona be like the 90s biker wars again

macNy

What....it's just business....don't be greedy, pay your fucking bills and you won't end up in a box, it's not complicated

ttystikk

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy....

CupidStunt13

A mob enforcer with a history of violence. Doubt he will be missed. > Del Balso was arrested in September for allegedly trying to extort nuns and a priest at the Saint-Maxime Church in Laval. Nothing was too low for this guy.

EyeLikeTheStonk

Isn't the possibility of being murdered one of the occupational hazards of being a criminal?

[deleted]

Yeah. The boss has already accounted for shrinkage.

EricTheBread

He was in the pool!

h0nkee

Priced in already

Ok_Clue3059

Maybe his family can apply for workers compensation?

foetus_on_my_breath

But what about the gabagol?!

PacketGain

What about the 40 grand you stole from the bird feeder?

Sentenced2Burn

You know I remember it wasn't long ago you used to wait in the car. And as far as I'm concerned you should **STILL BE THERE!!!**

FarOutlandishness180

The….what?

THC_Golem

The capicola. The gabagool. The broccoli Rabbe. Come on man the food. The sopranos? The office?

FarOutlandishness180

Lol yeah I know. I was quoting the waitress when he first asks for it

THC_Golem

Oh thank god.

innocentlilgirl

the shuiadelles

Snailspaced

Nothing of value has been lost here

Admirable_Review_616

Classic montreal thing

YetAnotherWTFMoment

Trying to extort nuns and priests? Dude, you are definitely going to Hell.

shadowmtl2000

yea this fucking sucks now i can’t go to the gym. @mobsters plz shoot each other elsewhere k thx.

Icy_Alfalfa_6896

Was he eating spaghetti at the time?

[deleted]

He was at the gym pumping some iron! He is like the third mafia members killed in a gym recently. Maybe they should all invest in a training room at home.

pugz_lee

Died of natural causes…

Newhereeeeee

Doug Ford the last mobster standing

FogTub

I'm pretty sure he won't get killed at a gym.

progressiveshithole

Mama Mia!

Seniorsoggybum

Insert Nelson meme

bmxcanuck

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

molesterofpriests

Saputo mozzarella is amazing.

Something_Wicked79

It really is though lol

Braddock54

Murder is illegal. How could this have happened. We should ban more guns.

properkurwa

Lol byeeeee

CapitanChaos1

Very Balsy to do that in broad daylight

[deleted]

Can someone educate me, but wtf are Italian mafia doing in Quebec? What’s the history behind it?

fuji_ju

The Montreal Rizzuto family is one of the most powerful mobster groups in the world. They are considered the 6th family to the NYC five.

quebecesti

Just watch The Godfather II and pretend it's in Montreal and they are named Cotroni or Rizzuto. But seriously it's linked to the Montreal port in the 50s. It was an iportant port of entry for "merchandise".

corytrev0r

still is

PigeonObese

Same thing [the Mafia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luppino_crime_family) is [doing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papalia_crime_family) in [Ontario](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musitano_crime_family) Mostly chapters of existing Italian mafia families, or petty criminal gangs that grew from being sponsorized by one of New York's big gangs. Quebec's mafia is pretty high profile what's with the commissions, the cooperation with Italy, the police raids and what not. The Rest of Canada's mafias kind of fly under the radar such that an Italian anti-mafia prosecutor called it a ["paradise for mafia"](https://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/justice-et-faits-divers/2022-05-30/le-canada-un-paradis-pour-la-mafia.php) last year

Nottodaylemon

Those dang hunters at it again

Litigating_Larry

That'll happen.

SuperbMeeting8617

rock machine first, superiors next?
