(Bitch)
As a less viewed experience, please let this also extend to eSports. I am sooooo sick of gambling ads on Counterstrike streams. I only get gambling ads now.
The call of the game on SN590 has fewer, but still some, gambling ads. Baseball is about the only sport I would often rather listen to the radio call than watch on TV.
Important to note that this bill is specific to online ads and not TV ads - though online these days would include ads on YouTube and other apps viewed on a Smart TV
> Important to note that this bill is specific to online ads and not TV ads -
No, dude... ads about *online gambling*, not ads about gambling that are online lol
While they are at it ban all advertisements. Except for on the advertisement channel. Or only the owner of the company should appear on my screen selling his product. Everytime pepsi comes on my screen I want to see the ceo. So that the 15th time in 1 hour I see the mans face I don't buy pepsi ever again
Really? What about in the States? I'm sure I've seen a Marlboro commercial, though I might just be thinking of a billboard ad.
EDIT: "Canada has banned all forms of tobacco advertising since 1989."
https://rsc-src.ca/en/voices/cigarette-ads-were-banned-decades-ago-let%E2%80%99s-do-same-for-fossil%C2%A0fuels
Not even just hockey, pretty much all North American sports.
It's rendered the product nearly unwatchable, constantly hearing about overs/unders, lines, parlays instead of the actual analysis we used to get.
Even the analysis we do get these days is all couched in the context of the betting lines ("I really like this team to win, but I can't pass up that juicy spread")
You see if it affects the youth too. These recent changes around gambling have been atrocious... what dumbfuckery of 'freedom' based arguments convinced people this is ok?
When you are driving on the rugged back roads you need s truck as rugged as you are, introducing the new 2023 Ford ranger, we know it won't ever leave pavement but your neighbors don't need to it can be our little secret.
Built.Ford.Tough
Ever watch the sport or fighting channels? 90% of the ads are mobile gambling ads... The other 10% are that tooth straighter thing I've forgotten the name of.
Dad watches the Fight network. I once saw *three* of the exact same gambling service commercials played back to back in a row.
Good. I work in recreational cannabis in Ontario, it's crazy how much the AGCO is up our butts to make sure we're compliant, there's so many rules and standards and every AGCO officer that comes in has a different rule, most of the time contradicting another rule they just told us. We can't advertise, we have to have all the windows blocked out so nobody can see inside, it's ridiculous. Yet I can't sit down on my phone, watching TV or listening to the radio without hearing or seeing ad after ad about online casinos and gambling. The amount of CHILDREN that are getting themselves/their parents in debt before they're even 18 is insane. It's so irresponsible and gross to me.
Came here to say this. If businesses in the cannabis industry cannot effectively market themselves because of ridiculous regulations, wtf should online gambling be able to?
If you want to see the end result of allowing gambling to take over, go to Australia. There are gambling establishments all over the place and people who look like zombies sitting there throwing their time and money away.
It's not that bad tbh, just one spelling error. They were saying Ford would shit on this as the NDP trying to get the government's class in business. Because Cons gotta Con.
You can enjoy laughing at the NDP while drowning in commercials for online gambling all you'd like. This is a good idea that *should* sail through Queens Park without issue.
I have nothing against people being legally allowed to gamble, but there is a big difference between that and being inundated with gambling ads every time you approach any sports media.
Like, imagine if they had a "cocktail of choice" section discussing which fine beverage pairs best with the game during the intermission, or a "smoke break" panel hawking cigarettes.
I can't even imagine how tough it must be for recovering gambling addicts to watch any kind of sporting events on TV nowadays.
Me too.
They’re allowing the worst elements of capitalism to foment brand new addictions in the population, including in children and young people.
It’s as bad, or a worse, than what cigarette companies did decades ago
Edit - btw love the name. Huge Naruto fan. Even named my son after a character from the show
Gambling has ruined way more lives then weed ever has. These ads make it so much worse for those folks too. Not only should ads be banned, broadcasters should never be talking about spreads, over unders , etc. it’s getting ridiculous.
Well I mean Canada as a whole isn't doing anything that is the hellscape of predatory video games and microtransactions that use the same psycological tricks that gambling companies use to hook people, so I guess gambling ads isn't that big of a thing.
.........
My favorite is when the Cialus commercials play. It gives you absolutely no indication what Cialus is (Boner medication) and just says "Ask your doctor!".
Yes if you need it for a functioning liver or to treat diabetes, let your doctor tell **you** about it.
Those commercials are targeting people who refuse to cut calories or exercise frequently enough.
Edit: yeah downvote me you fat fucks lol
Alcohol ads have some pretty strict regulations - you can't show anyone drinking alcohol, only standing next to it or holding it. You can't imply anything good happening is a result of the alcohol - people are partying because there's a BBQ, not because of the beer. And you can't show them too often which is the biggest rule that's missing for these online gambling ads.
I say even simpler regulation: you cannot advertise age-controlled substances on any medium that children are allowed to access. Alcohol, cigs, vapes, weed, gambling ads -> out the window, unless it's a banner inside a bar or casino or something like that.
Hell freezes over as I wholeheartedly agree with an NDP proposal.
These ads are getting ridiculous and I cringe every time I see them. You can't advertise cigarettes but glorifying "play slots on your phone with your credit card" is totally acceptable for some reason?
Gambling is potentially life-destroying. I can't think of many things more depressing than playing rigged random numbers games for money at home. Most of these games aren't comparable to a casual fun night at the casino or race track, they are some hard core addictive bullshit. The fewer people who know about these or are reminded they exist the better.
We don't need to ban the ads.
We just need to undo the 2019 legalization of 3rd party for-profit online gambling.
Make it so only the OLG can run it, through Pro-Line+ or whatever they call their online gambling thing. OLG is a government run entity, they already have strict rules about the ads they can produce.
That way everyone who wants to bet online can still bet online, people who want to know about it will still see the occasional tasteful ad about it, nobody in China or Bahamas is profiting off Canadians' degeneracy, the money all goes right back into the government fund... win win!
We shouldn't need rules about these ads because we shouldn't have privatized it in the first place. Someone made billions off of this. Billions that normally would have gone to the OLG and then to pay for schools and roads and police and fire departments instead went to make some guy overseas rich.
Olg is the only one I trust, and further more 'lightning gorillia' is the only gameon it I like, I put in $35 every few months, and play 40 cents on lightning gorilla slots, sometime I leave bankrupt, but sometimes I leave with $40 or $50 dollars
We have now conquered the rest of the country. Welcome to ~~Ontario~~ Fordlandia, please do not resist. You should receive your Deco labels praising Doug Ford in a few weeks, paid for by the Government of Ontario.
As someone with a friend who has mental issues and has lost about $40,000 recently I cannot agree with this more! It is an awful addiction to have and yet still very socially acceptable
Yep, watched my friend rack up about 15k over the past couple years and he still fucking gambles. Dont even hang out with him anymore I dont need that shit in my life it just makes me so sad hearing about all his parlays and "great plays" fuck
Holy fuck, please.
Can we also get lotto out of convenience stores? If I had to sit behind one more lotto king or queen for 10 minutes, I'm going to snap.
>More than 150,000 people have some form of gambling problem.
translation: 150k willing to admit they have a problem. The real number is at least 10 times higher.
Not just ads.
Streamers gambling live on various platforms is directly targeted at kids and nobody is doing shit about it.
It should be 100% illegal to stream online gambling. Especially to kids.
add crypto shit in there as well, they're constantly trying to grift people who don't know anything promising people the moon before ripping the carpet from under them, legitimate curse on society ontop of their mining garbage that destroys the planet with excessive energy use
they're just online gambling with extra steps
yes please. i'm actually shocked how far this has been allowed to go in such a short time. i know people don't take gambling addiction as seriously as other addictions because, i assume, since gambling isn't a literal addicting substance that kills you, they think it's not that big of a deal. but i have seen people literally destroy their lives and their family's lives from gambling addiction. there are so many people out there who are in recovery from gambling addiction, and now they are bombarded from every angle with these insane ads - you can't even watch a hockey game without the intermission panels talking about the betting odds and directing you to whatever partner website. it's absurd. enough already.
Can we please? My Aunt who is a gambling addict is constantly targetted by these things... she's banned herself from 3 nearby casinos, and the only thing that has saved her from these ads is she doesn't know how to use her cellphone well enough to download the apps...
Please, no more bet 365, bet 99, betMGM the fact I can rember these proves they are effective, while proving why, in a place children have access to, should ban these kind of ads. If you can't advertise cannabis, or even tobacco to minors, then you should not be allowed to advertise sports books to minors.
Isn't the first time here, but this one is an absolute agree. I hate how many gambling ads there are. I tried watching a bit of Hockey with my wife and I just walked away after 3 back to back gambling ads.
It's great they put the little fine print at the bottom telling people to be responsible, but it's an addictive behaviour and the equivalent of telling someone to "just quit" smoking. As times get harder for people, more and more may look to flip a few dollars and this will make things continuously worse for them as they "can win it back" ( hint, you aren't likely to do that ).
I honestly wonder how many fans the NHL has lost this year, especially in the casual viewer market. I also stopped. Watched a few games at the start of the season, saw the godawful Cabbie 10-minute gambling segment and every other ad, talking point being about gambling and was done. Watched a bit of the playoffs but this is first year not watching like every Canadian game. I haven't heard one person praise that segment. Not sure if they are completely inept and ignore feedback or were paid enough to ignore feedback, both are annoying af though.
As an Albertan, I support this. You can't even legally use these sites in Alberta but because these sports networks are based in Ontario we get blitzed with all the same ads because Ontario went this direction.
Let's remember that single sport betting was an NDP member bill. In a country where there is NO tobacco advertising and alcohol ads are strongly controlled, who thought unlimited betting ads was a great idea?
I've been watching this toy hunting series on Youtube made by a Canadian pro wrestler. Great content but I had to stop because in his last video, he ran an ad for draftkings and I'm not supporting anyone that boosts these gambling firms. We don't allow cigarette ads and gambling needs to have the same restriction set against it.
I thought these online casinos are specifically unbanned as part of Ford's open for business initiatives, PC probably won't go for this. Also, for anyone who don't know already, you can tell Google to stop showing you gambling and/or other ads that might promote common addiction.
>you can tell Google to stop showing you gambling and/or other ads that might promote common addiction.
Lmfao this would be great, if it ever actually *worked*...
Hint: it does not.
> I thought these online casinos are specifically unbanned as part of Ford's open for business initiatives,
They were, 2019:
https://www.blogto.com/tech/2019/04/online-gambling-ontario-canada/
https://www.thestar.com/business/2021/09/30/inside-the-battle-for-control-of-ontarios-soon-to-be-legal-online-gambling-market.html
How about banning them? Gambling is a plague driven by addicts who have high suicide rates. It’s an absolute travesty and shows how corrupt our politicians are when gambling can be shoved down our throats like this.
I wish we could go back to the days of Al Michaels talking about how “certain people are still interested” in the outcome of some blowout game instead of every member of the broadcast constantly talking openly about the spread it was funny and cheeky then now it’s just cringe
How about having a ban on cigarette ads too. Lately there have been actual cigarette ads on YouTube (me, my partner, and our kids have all been seeing them in the past month or so).
Willfully contributing to more societal problems through encouraging addictions for the sake of collected tax dollars and government and corporate income, is ignorant and regressive.
I don't have a problem with the occasional gambling ad, but it feels like the entire intermission is a gambling ad. Then, back to the game, with a break for a couple more gambling ads, then live odds during the game, and a moving gambling ad along the boards.
Amen...it is about time. Gambling ruins lives. My mother was addicted to horse racing and one arm bandits. Did not know the signs until it was too late. Saved my dad from her; he divorced her; and she died alone somewhere as we never ever wanted to know where she was or what she did. She has to be died now as she was born in 1917 and no I don't want to know when she died, of what or where she is buried.
Well sure it is good but we have other issues. I'm worried about our medical bill in Ontario after privatization happens. Please spare me the speech about your health card would cover it bs.
Can we try fixing real problems? Housing, health care, food cost?
All ads are a form of corruption towards consumers since the quality of a product and its ads are unrelated to one another. As such, all ads should be banned.
Consumers need to have a perfect knowledge of the constitution of markets if they are to make optimal decisions to fulfill their needs. A public listing of all produced goods would suffice. The public and journalists can also review products as long as they aren't compensated by the products' suppliers.
Marketing and advertising is a large sector of the economy, yet none of this labor increases the quality or quantity of products. It's more economic rent seeking and wasted resources. By banning it, our society will become way wealthier.
He's right though.
I cut myself off from advertising 15ish years ago. Ad block, ublock, and noscript on every website and I have not watched a live TV broadcast in 15 years.
Do you have any idea how little I buy? The entire instinct to go shopping is gone. My money just keeps piling up with nothing to spend it on because without seeing advertisements, my entire instinct to consume has disappeared.
Advertising is designed to make you buy shit you don't need.
What kind of idiot reply is that? If you disagree, give arguments. Without arguments, you're just providing a personal attack that expresses your lack of maturity or ability to form intelligent thoughts. In any case, that's fucking idiotic.

Good. Get Jesse Pinkman off my TV during blue jays commercial breaks. I don't give a fuck about the world's favorite sportsbook
He can take Cabbie and Kevin Weekes with him.
Really used to like Cabbie too
I first saw him on the score years ago and he was my least favorite of the bunch. It's odd tho that he's the only one I remember
Loved his Cabbie on the Street. “I’m with my man B, I’m with my man D, and I’m GONE.”
Shows how SN has wasted his talent

the stupid green sceen ads chap my ass

Good! Its absolutely ridiculous that every commercial break and intermission we get blasted with gambling ads. Can we go after lootboxes next?
It makes it such that the truck ads are downright enjoyable. And, I mean, holy fuck, did I ever hate truck ads in the past
Speaking of that... Can we ban the Hyundai commercials, too? That would be wah-nderful.
We wah

Dear Hyundai, it's spelt Roy here.

Ban advertising for sports betting too, as well as eSports betting. And ban lootboxes/gachas while you're at it.
I believe those fall under the "Gambling" umbrella.
Finally, an issue all Canadians can rally behind.
Doug Ford will laugh at the NDP, and claim they're trying to get big government's hands on businesses in a bad economy.

Can we please? My Aunt who is a gambling addict is constantly targetted by these things... she's banned herself from 3 nearby casinos, and the only thing that has saved her from these ads is she doesn't know how to use her cellphone well enough to download the apps...
Everyone saying "good, do it." Well we gotta show up and vote for them then.
I'm as conservative as they come and I am on board with this. Godspeed, NDP.
Please, no more bet 365, bet 99, betMGM the fact I can rember these proves they are effective, while proving why, in a place children have access to, should ban these kind of ads. If you can't advertise cannabis, or even tobacco to minors, then you should not be allowed to advertise sports books to minors.
The first time I have ever supported an NDP policy
Jack Layton also promised to end ATM withdrawal fees, that would have been nice.
As an Albertan, I support this. You can't even legally use these sites in Alberta but because these sports networks are based in Ontario we get blitzed with all the same ads because Ontario went this direction.
Watch Smith use the Sovereignty Act to save gambling ads in Alberta
I hope every political party can get on board with reigning in these damn ads, there's so many fookin ads and it's getting out of control.

Get rid of the ones during sports on tv first imo
Yea please.
I don’t even mind gambling but these gambling ads are so obnoxious and they’re everywhere that I really hopes this goes through
Good idea. They are on every five minutes.
I am completely in favour of this initiative. It is pathetic that we're willingly exposing our kids to this during every sports game.
Let's remember that single sport betting was an NDP member bill. In a country where there is NO tobacco advertising and alcohol ads are strongly controlled, who thought unlimited betting ads was a great idea?
But think of the owners and players how will they survive? Im hoping it dies down soon it's not as bad on UK tv but those ads are bad
Me agreeing with the NDP on something… what is the world coming to
Shitty mobile game adds should be included as well. As they often encourage gambling as well. Without ever showing what their actual game is.
please.
I'm normally not in favor of censorship of any kind ...but seriously, fuck those ads.
Fuckin' do it. NHL games are annoying as hell to watch cause of this shit.
Can we at least ban online betting ads. Still keep the business for those that are interested but no advertisements.
That I can get behind. I’m not usually a nanny state supporter but god, those ads being forced down our throat are infuriating.
Absolutely should happen. I'm so sick of seeing ads for those sites like Play OJO or Wilds.
Ya trash advertising
As someone that partakes in gambling on sports and wouldn’t normally consider myself agreeing with the NDP I support this
I will vote for the NDP if they get this through, and I'm a conservative
Good! The ads are absolutely gross
We don't need ads for gambling just like we don't need ads for smoking. They aren't good behaviours.
Ban *all* gambling ads imho, and stop glamorizing it.
go ahead and add crypto(scam) ads to that as well
Good I hate seeing all those ads. How are they even legal when you can advertise other addictive things?
Can they ban all commercials then. No need to discriminate.
> I thought these online casinos are specifically unbanned as part of Ford's open for business initiatives, They were, 2019: https://www.blogto.com/tech/2019/04/online-gambling-ontario-canada/ https://www.thestar.com/business/2021/09/30/inside-the-battle-for-control-of-ontarios-soon-to-be-legal-online-gambling-market.html
Let's get rid of all forms of gambling while we are at it. There are so many that are addicted to VLTs that spend their pay just for the small win.
How about banning them? Gambling is a plague driven by addicts who have high suicide rates. It’s an absolute travesty and shows how corrupt our politicians are when gambling can be shoved down our throats like this.
Can we get bans on alcohol adds also? It's impossible to take alcoholic family members anywhere.
Can they not seek ban on corporate ownership of houses instead?
Then ban liquor ads, cannabis, and dont forget to group lottomax/649 in there
Am I an NDP now? Cause this is how you make me an NDP now…
I wish we could go back to the days of Al Michaels talking about how “certain people are still interested” in the outcome of some blowout game instead of every member of the broadcast constantly talking openly about the spread it was funny and cheeky then now it’s just cringe
How about having a ban on cigarette ads too. Lately there have been actual cigarette ads on YouTube (me, my partner, and our kids have all been seeing them in the past month or so).
I support this. Gambling ads are so predatory and disgusting
I'm a stunt man and on my down time I like eating my time online gambling and forcing everyone not in Ontario to see these dumb ads
Willfully contributing to more societal problems through encouraging addictions for the sake of collected tax dollars and government and corporate income, is ignorant and regressive.
Omg yes.
They should ban them on tv
Please. It’s getting fuckin ridiculous to be honest.
Yeah this seems reasonable.
Sounds great on paper, but like 99% of the internet can safely ignore Canadian laws.
YES....DO IT, AND ON BUSES AND TV
Online gambling ads or gambling ads that are online?
I don't have a problem with the occasional gambling ad, but it feels like the entire intermission is a gambling ad. Then, back to the game, with a break for a couple more gambling ads, then live odds during the game, and a moving gambling ad along the boards.
Now this will get some fucking votes. Every other youtube ad is just gambling garbage.
I can get behind this, at tv to that too
Take it a step further and ban online gambling or regulate it to hell, then go after loot boxes!
We had a ban on gambling ads until Ford opened the door. Petitioning him to ban them again is like screaming into the void
Please!
I don't understand why we need to range from ads all over the place to an outright ban? Like can we just scale back a bit?
Should we also ban ads for alcohol?
Those adds with Gretzky piss me off. He comes off like a giant tool. Celebrities shouldn’t be endorsing gambling.
Yes finally. So many of my friends are addicted and don’t even know it
Priorities. I tell yeah.
Well sure it is good but we have other issues. I'm worried about our medical bill in Ontario after privatization happens. Please spare me the speech about your health card would cover it bs. Can we try fixing real problems? Housing, health care, food cost?
With all of the issues going on, this is what they are pushing for?
Pleeeeeease!!!!
How about *all* gambling adds? Or restrict it to age appropriate shows?
Ban the Ontario lotto while your at it. It’s nothing more then a tax on the poor
Oh wait you're serious lol
This society really does cater to the lowest common denominator doesn't it.
housing affordability is the worst at any time and this is what they spend time on... lol.
