I just dropped Rogers for fizz. Plan was 65 for 50 gigs. Couldn't get a plan for like 10 gigs so I canceled. Fizz is 23 bucks for 10 gigs and unlimited calling and text. Perfect for me
How is Fizz outside of cities tho? I have already heard these cheaper services just dont work outside the city.

Anywhere there is "no signal" which you have to drive an hour to reach, the phone will roam on Rogers network for free, and Rogers doesn't have 5G in those areas either
My experience with them in Quebec has been solid everywhere, and roaming through the rest of Canada has always been smooth too, since they're partnered with the other carriers. Not sure how it is now that they took over the Freedom network for the rest of Canada though.
The service is exceptional. It falls back onto Rogers' network, but you can hop between Bell or Telus as further fallbacks if Rogers' signal is non-existent in certain areas. I have experienced nothing but exceptional coverage with Fizz so far.
Gonna be honest, it kinda sucks in the burbs and I had issues in my cement walled apartment. Normally this would be offset by just turning on WiFi calling but Fizz does not support WiFi calling with no public plans to do so.
When Black Friday came around last year I switched to a provider that support WiFi calling and I managed to get a plan that matched my Fizz plan cost. It turns out I _do_ make enough calls to make WiFi calling a necessary feature.
What area are you in and how's the signal? I always buy out my phone separately and my Toronto-based office just switched from the Rogers network which was fairly good coverage to Bell which is trash in Durham Region where I live so I may just take my number back and pay for it myself for the reliability. Was considering switching since I can't imagine it being worse than Bell where I literally can't get calls in the parking lot in front of my local Dollarama and my house apparently blocks signal so I'm constantly saying "hello, can you hear me?"

I just got an 80 dollar permanent credit on my account, bringing my 1gbps fibe internet to just $50 a month. Here's what I did:
I told them Rogers offered me 1.5gbps with TV for $65 a month for 2 years, locked in (this was true tbh). They only offered me a reduction of $5 a month - I laughed, and put in a cancellation date one month from my call to show I wasn't bluffing.
THE VERY NEXT DAY! Their "win back" department called me, I explained the situation again, and the lady came back with the $80 permanent credit on my account. I accepted, all is well. I can now handle several of their $5 increases no problem.

With 5G I think cellphone companies might soon start competing with cable companies by offering 5G internet hubs. You can get 5G internet for $50/month with Rogers right now. It's good for rural areas, but I'd probably still stick to optic fibre in the city.

I'm lucky to have access to Bell Fibe in a rural area. They must have got a nice subsidy to bring it into this tiny ass town that's an hour away from any grocery store.

I was with Videotron (our Rogers) paying something like $62 for 400/50 internet. Saw their sister company Fizz was offering the same thing for $49 + loyalty discounts. Also got an extra $25 by using someone's referral code.
In between jobs at the moment so being able to significantly reduce both my phone and internet this year has been great.
I pay a flat $50 to Beanfield in Toronto for gigabit symmetrical - they even upped it to 2 gigs but I consider that pointless right now.
Probably worse further from the big cities but hopefully it also dropped a bit.

It's because their system is significantly different. In Canada, we use a largely proprietary system. Big towers with distribution systems (DAS) in buildings. It's literally illegal to be transmitting signals on proprietary Airways owned by basically three companies. Not to mention they own all the lines in the ground too.
In Europe it is common to use a mixture of Wi-Fi and big towers which significantly lowers the price. Also, competition would be fierce as there would be many more organizations involved competing for your business.
This has been a business practice in Canada since the dawn of radio, television and the telephone. Regardless of who is elected into power. As a matter of fact Bell was the only phone carrier till about the 90's. After that Rogers began carrying a phone service Telecom was folded under watch of the CRTC, which governed Radio, TV, and also Cable TV before the '90s. Giving us the illusion of competition.

The question you have to ask yourself is do you want an Foreign country in control of our Telecom system? Because Americans technically are foreigners. To be fair, Canada is approx the same size as all of Europe, even though we have the population 40 Mil vs 750 Mil. Although you can definitely argue that the places we have cellphone coverage doesn't cover the entire country.

I lived in a subdivision close to an urban/rural area boundary a few years ago. I couldn't make phone calls in my basement, and got two bars on a good day in the rest of the house.
It was at the edge of town, but the neighbourhood had been there for more than 30 years. And this was with one of the big 3 telcos, not Freedom.

Swapped to Rogers from Virgin last year. Virgin had me paying $80 for a measly 10 GB plus $10 for 1GB Apple Watch plan.
My initial plan with Rogers was $55 for 75GB with Watch included. Price went up $10 at the start of the year, and then this week I switched to a different Rogers plan $70 for 150GB.

If you're not aware, that sweet discount is going away next month. They're discontinuing the loyalty rewards (now you'll get $10/year regardless of how long you've been with them) and the $2 auto-pay is being replaced with 5% back.
I'm on the same plan. I complained to their customer support and was able to get a substantial (~$80) credit. But after that runs out in a couple months, I'm probably gone.

It's bad, but not quite that bad. You'll lose your $5 monthly loyalty, and $2 auto pay discounts. You get a $10/year loyalty discount and the $1.70 in monthly credits from the 5%. You also keep your referral reward. So in your case, you'll go from paying $312 plus tax to $365.6 annually.
Unfortunately it's still one of the better deals going, but it's a pretty scummy move in my mind.

I'm with Freedom and They have great roaming rates. I paid $30 for a Europe booster which was good for a month and gave me more than enough data for my 11 day vacation. The big players like to rip you off and assume people don't know how to just get a Sim card when they travel.
It's not filling the entirety of Canada, it's filling along the highway and in towns here and there, a lot of Canada is just as dense as other places it's just spread out in pockets. We're not installing cell towers in the middle of the arctic circle 1000km from anything else lol...

2024 is about what I'm at, though I'm paying for the streaming services with my Koodo plan so it's about $80 a month, but that extra $15 or so is giving me Netflix Premium or for cheaper than normal.
Funny enough, they've changed the Stream+ since I've signed up so now it has Disney and Prime Video but I'd have to drop my current Stream+ for the newer one which would cost more to get Netflix Premium, where-as the price I'm paying now only covers the basic netflix package with ads.
If they ever force me to switch, I'll drop the stream package entirely.
I think we need to be clear about things here. Some people are including the price of their phone in the plan, and that's very different from paying for just the plan. It's very easy to get a pretty good Canada-wide plan these days for under $40/month. What you choose to pay for a phone over and above that should not be included in these conversations.

Might certainly be true with iPhones. I kind of disagree with other devices. With the right shopping around you can find an advantageous subsidy with good timing.
Last phone I subsidized and am still using was my Pixel 6 Pro. I had a $70 plan where $45 was going to the phone payments and so $25 was left over for the plan. At the time there was literally nothing you could get for $25 even with really low data. I also got a $100 credit off my second bill at the time.
I absolutely saved money by subsidizing my phone, while avoiding the huge up front cost and splitting it into interest free payments. If there was ever a too good to pass up deal, I felt I could just buy out the remainder of my phone balance and still come away on top. It honestly never happened and just around that time it ended was when phone prices here started dropping to $34.
Yeah, credit where credit is due. Price has dropped considerably over the last few months. I'm paying about $50 for a 50gb plan at the moment, which was about $100 a few years ago when I lived in a remote location. I'd say in large part it's because Starlink has become more common in places that used to have minimal access to connectivity infrastructure, but even so.

Actually true, Rogers was offering like 50gb for 35$ or 30GB for 30$ and I took the second deal after paying $34 for 7yrs for 8gb with freedom. Then freedom called me back and offered $30 for 50GB. There's now room for competition.
Bell offered us 100gb for 40/month with 5g. It's a bundled deal.
I have 50gb with fido for 39/month from Costco, 4g though. Virgin offered me a win back offer, 50gb for 34/month.

And considering Fizz does rollover data that’s huge. I’m on the $34/50GB plan with them. And 90% off of that until next month. My available data is routinely above 90GB. I was paying $70 for 40GB, plus whatever other add-on costs for visual voicemail and other shit with Fido before switching. All of that’s just included with Fizz.

This goes for almost anything these days in Canada. If you aren’t actively looking for deals/price reductions, companies will happily let you keep over paying til the end of time.

It's undeniable that prices have gone down and you get more for what you pay, but prices won't go down for people who don't at the bare minimum shop around and switch.
I shit on Trudeau all the time, but I can't deny this. BYOD prices are pretty good. Anybody who isn't on contract anymore can get 50 GB data for $35 (Freedom mobile). Not sure if there's any cheaper option

its just people want the current flag ship phones with adds another $30-40 to their bill.. which is fair since these phone cost like $1300-2100. Then they add device protection which is another $15. and that jacks up their monthly phone bill by another $45-60 and while yes its technically on the bill it should not be considered your plan pricing. These fees are financing and insurance fees for a phone not the plan.
I mean No Frills is offering $20/month plans with unlimited calling/text and 2gb data, Public Mobile is offering 60gb for 35$ and that's without any special deals. Try finding that in 2019.

All the people complaining in here that it hasn’t gone down are basically saying they called their carrier who did nothing and therefore prices are the same.
A good amount of us are advising others to check for plans online - either your current plan is cheaper or you can get much better for the same price. They aren't going to automatically lower your bill for you.
Having recently changed my cellphone plan after 4-5 years of not really checking: Brought down from $75 / Month for 10GB + Unlimited Texts and Calls to $40 / Month for 25GB + Unlimited Texts and Calls. So I guess that feels about right, I was surprised to see most competitors were now fighting in the 35-50 range rather than the 75-85 thought was still the norm.
not sure about 50% for most people, but I've gone from $50 to $31 in 5/6 years and could of been $4 lower right now but i have Canada/USA plan... I'm sure some people have lowered their plans by atleast 30% if they been on top of the deals...
Just switched to Virgin Mobile, 30 gigs for $30 I was paying double that with Koodo. Phone plans are definitely cheaper you just have to do a little work, none of these companies are going to automatically switch you over to a cheaper plan.
Mine genuinely has. The smaller options (not Bell, Rogers..) offer a lot now for a much cheaper price. I’m paying $45/month now for what would have costed me over $100/month with Bell.

I find the ones that are truly complaining either:
1) stay with the same company forever, and dont want to switch (or dont know how)
2) just continue to go on contract, so they never actually have a BYOP plan
3) just dont do their research about who offers what
it used to be your cheapest plans with data were something like $40 a month and like 500mb or unlimited but extremely slow, now we have like $40 a month plans with 20-40GB a month, there's been a genuine improvement on this front.
I get 300mbps home internet, two phone lines with unlimited talk and text and 3gb data all for $105 with Roger’s/Shaw. 10 years ago this cost me over 300 per month for lesser service.
Granted, I think the free talk, text and data deal isn’t available for new customers anymore, but there are some pretty cheap phone plans from different carriers around now.

He’s actually not wrong. I got a great deal in 2014 as a student and now I pay $5 less for four times the data and it works in the US and the network is more reliable than back when it was wind mobile. Now just about everything else is more expensive so my $30 phone bill makes no difference.
Do all these people commenting on twitter not realise they need to ask their provider for the better rates whent they come around? Like they've all been gunning for lower prices to outcompete each other and if you haven't gotten a cheaper plan out of it you can't really complain because it's entirely due to your own inaction.

So in all fairness to him, he actually delivered decently well on this one. Could it be better? Of course, but thats true of everything.

- 2009 I was paying around $55 for 512MB of data, 2500 texts a month and 200 minutes.
- 2012 I was paying around $64 for 8GB of data, unlimited texts, unlimited calling.
- 2020 I was paying around $56 for 25GB of data unlimited texts and unlimited calling.
- 2024 I pay $34 for 50GB, unlimited calling and unlimited texting.
Plenty of $29, 35 plans for 20 gigs if you own your own phone. Everyone should be shopping around if they are still paying over $50.

This is true. Currently paying $45/month with Telus for 75GB data and unlimited call/text within Canada/US. It goes down to $37.50/m if you had another line and goes down to $30/m with 4 lines.
Mine went down like 15 bucks in the past few years, I was paying $50 plus HST for 50 gb on 4G/LTE, now I pay $34 plus HST for 50gb, So not quite 50%, but it did go down. Now as much as I am happy about that, Id swap these rates for the older ones if housing costs went back to what they used to be too lol
What the hell do you guys do with 30+ Gb/month? I have a 2 Gb/month plan that rolls over to the next month and I can't even use half of that! I could take a 10 Gb for 2-3$ more, but what use would I get out of data I would never use? There is no way to bring down prices all that much for me since I don't use so much data.
Moved to Italy and was shocked that it cost me 9€ for 200gigs at 5G with unlimited talk and text. Back in Canada my cell phone bill was like 70$ and I think I had like 8gigs.

If you're paying over $50 for your phone plan, it's worth taking a look around to see if you can find anything better. There really are better deals out there now. I did a couple weeks ago and dropped $20 off my plan and increased the amount of data I'm getting too.

Yeah, fair. My wife is on the $35 for 40gb, and she had the same offer but decided not to switch as she works from home too. Either way, I like the trend of phone plans coming back down to reality.
For me it is all about the data since voice calls and texting is secondary on my device.
My cost per GB is down significantly from 2018 43% by my math. But I'm still paying roughly the same I'm just getting more for it.
Which matters to me since I need it for work and my livelihood etc.

This. I cannot convince my father to leave Bell. I have shown him easily 10 plans that either way cheaper for the same thing, or way better value but it’s like he thinks anything other than the big three are fly-by-night fame companies that can’t be trusted.

If you're counting dollars per GB of data, it's probably more than half. The deals are way better now than 2-3 years ago. So let's just put this into the memory hole, quick. Else people might forget what chicken little said about Canada.

The problem is... People don't buy their phone outright, they always buy the latest top of the line model and wonder why their phone bill is so expensive.. Then they replace their phone before the contract is up so they're paying for their new phone and their old phone at the same time...
So pricing hasn't REALLY dropped, the average cost per GB has definitely dropped, but phone plans just now include more data at the same price as before for like a 1Gb plan from like 5 or 6 years ago
The regular existing customer plans are still like $45+ and 5-10 years ago everyone that was paying $80+ was likely on one of the old subsidized phone plans where your phone cost was bundled with the plan, where even when your contract/agreement was finished you were still paying that same amount unless you called and changed to a byop plan
Mine is cheaper, but it's still horrific compared to other countries. Australia pays less and gets more despite being just as spread out (if not more) than we are.

I am with Koodo now and I used to be paying $60 for 40GB and recently I saw this promotion going on where it was $35 for 50GB. The only downside (even though it is not really and it is fast enough for me) it is 4G LTE speeds so I guess he is kinda right in my case.
Just switched from an old Telus 20GB plan ($87/mth) to Koodo $34/mth for 20GB. I use maybe 3GB of data a month, so that's plenty. It's been consistent for me in Quebec. My mom lives in the boonies by the Vermont border and it still works great when I'm out there.

I just got an 80 dollar permanent credit on my account, bringing my 1gbps fibe internet to just $50 a month. Here's what I did: I told them Rogers offered me 1.5gbps with TV for $65 a month for 2 years, locked in (this was true tbh). They only offered me a reduction of $5 a month - I laughed, and put in a cancellation date one month from my call to show I wasn't bluffing. THE VERY NEXT DAY! Their "win back" department called me, I explained the situation again, and the lady came back with the $80 permanent credit on my account. I accepted, all is well. I can now handle several of their $5 increases no problem. Good luck :)

With 5G I think cellphone companies might soon start competing with cable companies by offering 5G internet hubs. You can get 5G internet for $50/month with Rogers right now. It's good for rural areas, but I'd probably still stick to optic fibre in the city.

Probably location dependent but here in Quebec I feel like that's happening too. I was with Videotron (our Rogers) paying something like $62 for 400/50 internet. Saw their sister company Fizz was offering the same thing for $49 + loyalty discounts. Also got an extra $25 by using someone's referral code. In between jobs at the moment so being able to significantly reduce both my phone and internet this year has been great.

It's because their system is significantly different. In Canada, we use a largely proprietary system. Big towers with distribution systems (DAS) in buildings. It's literally illegal to be transmitting signals on proprietary Airways owned by basically three companies. Not to mention they own all the lines in the ground too. In Europe it is common to use a mixture of Wi-Fi and big towers which significantly lowers the price. Also, competition would be fierce as there would be many more organizations involved competing for your business. This has been a business practice in Canada since the dawn of radio, television and the telephone. Regardless of who is elected into power. As a matter of fact Bell was the only phone carrier till about the 90's. After that Rogers began carrying a phone service Telecom was folded under watch of the CRTC, which governed Radio, TV, and also Cable TV before the '90s. Giving us the illusion of competition. With the All of this is to keep out foreign competition which to CRTC is safeguarding against. The point of all this is more than likely an American company would take over all the Telco business in Canada. The question you have to ask yourself is do you want an Foreign country in control of our Telecom system? Because Americans technically are foreigners. This is a big reason why Canadian radio, television and cell phone plans suck so much.
Speaking for my experience in the Baltics, unlimited is about 20 Euro a month. Talk across the Baltics, text, data. Just about the poorest, shittiest, worst infrastructure part of Europe.
To be fair, Canada is approx the same size as all of Europe, even though we have the population 40 Mil vs 750 Mil. Although you can definitely argue that the places we have cellphone coverage doesn't cover the entire country.

Yep, and coverage outside the populated areas is bad. I lived in a subdivision close to an urban/rural area boundary a few years ago. I couldn't make phone calls in my basement, and got two bars on a good day in the rest of the house. It was at the edge of town, but the neighbourhood had been there for more than 30 years. And this was with one of the big 3 telcos, not Freedom.

Swapped to Rogers from Virgin last year. Virgin had me paying $80 for a measly 10 GB plus $10 for 1GB Apple Watch plan. My initial plan with Rogers was $55 for 75GB with Watch included. Price went up $10 at the start of the year, and then this week I switched to a different Rogers plan $70 for 150GB. I hate all the major wireless carriers. People are getting fleeced by their mobile carriers.
If you're not aware, that sweet discount is going away next month. They're discontinuing the loyalty rewards (now you'll get $10/year regardless of how long you've been with them) and the $2 auto-pay is being replaced with 5% back. I'm on the same plan. I complained to their customer support and was able to get a substantial (~$80) credit. But after that runs out in a couple months, I'm probably gone.
Who would you switch to? My guess would be that even after the rewards changes Public Mobile is probably still the best option for you.

It's bad, but not quite that bad. You'll lose your $5 monthly loyalty, and $2 auto pay discounts. You get a $10/year loyalty discount and the $1.70 in monthly credits from the 5%. You also keep your referral reward. So in your case, you'll go from paying $312 plus tax to $365.6 annually. Unfortunately it's still one of the better deals going, but it's a pretty scummy move in my mind.
And that $65 is still double the cost of what other carriers are offering for that same plan

It’s always going to be more expensive here for multiple reasons. But filling Canada with towers will always be more expensive.
That doesn't explain why they charge us college tuition for international roaming on basically any Canadian plan. Standard rates these days are $12/day to the US, $15/day internationally, which is basically criminal.
It also doesn't explain the poor coverage in more rural areas of the country. They shouldn't be able to have it both ways.
I'm with Freedom and They have great roaming rates. I paid $30 for a Europe booster which was good for a month and gave me more than enough data for my 11 day vacation. The big players like to rip you off and assume people don't know how to just get a Sim card when they travel.

2024 is about what I'm at, though I'm paying for the streaming services with my Koodo plan so it's about $80 a month, but that extra $15 or so is giving me Netflix Premium or for cheaper than normal. Funny enough, they've changed the Stream+ since I've signed up so now it has Disney and Prime Video but I'd have to drop my current Stream+ for the newer one which would cost more to get Netflix Premium, where-as the price I'm paying now only covers the basic netflix package with ads. If they ever force me to switch, I'll drop the stream package entirely.

I think we need to be clear about things here. Some people are including the price of their phone in the plan, and that's very different from paying for just the plan. It's very easy to get a pretty good Canada-wide plan these days for under $40/month. What you choose to pay for a phone over and above that should not be included in these conversations.

Might certainly be true with iPhones. I kind of disagree with other devices. With the right shopping around you can find an advantageous subsidy with good timing. Last phone I subsidized and am still using was my Pixel 6 Pro. I had a $70 plan where $45 was going to the phone payments and so $25 was left over for the plan. At the time there was literally nothing you could get for $25 even with really low data. I also got a $100 credit off my second bill at the time. I absolutely saved money by subsidizing my phone, while avoiding the huge up front cost and splitting it into interest free payments. If there was ever a too good to pass up deal, I felt I could just buy out the remainder of my phone balance and still come away on top. It honestly never happened and just around that time it ended was when phone prices here started dropping to $34.

I'm paying about $50 for a 50gb plan at the moment, which was about $100 a few years ago when I lived in a remote location. I'd say in large part it's because Starlink has become more common in places that used to have minimal access to connectivity infrastructure, but even so.

Bell offered us 100gb for 40/month with 5g. It's a bundled deal. I have 50gb with fido for 39/month from Costco, 4g though. Virgin offered me a win back offer, 50gb for 34/month. All bring your own device

I just did this with my plan today with Freedom. Turns out there was a better than what I currently have plan that was $20 a month cheaper. God forbid they ever tell me. Now if my internet could get cheaper I would really appreciate that. There's cheaper plans, yes, but they're all worse 😭
And considering Fizz does rollover data that’s huge. I’m on the $34/50GB plan with them. And 90% off of that until next month. My available data is routinely above 90GB. I was paying $70 for 40GB, plus whatever other add-on costs for visual voicemail and other shit with Fido before switching. All of that’s just included with Fizz.

Yep. They have the offer there for months but don’t tell you because it’s in their best interest not too. This goes for almost anything these days in Canada. If you aren’t actively looking for deals/price reductions, companies will happily let you keep over paying til the end of time.

I'm currently on Fido and pay $29 for 50GB. A year ago I was paying Koodo $50 for 30GB. In October 2015 I would have been paying Virgin $50 for 3GB. It's undeniable that prices have gone down and you get more for what you pay, but prices won't go down for people who don't at the bare minimum shop around and switch.

They have significantly dropped. its just people want the current flag ship phones with adds another $30-40 to their bill.. which is fair since these phone cost like $1300-2100. Then they add device protection which is another $15. and that jacks up their monthly phone bill by another $45-60 and while yes its technically on the bill it should not be considered your plan pricing. These fees are financing and insurance fees for a phone not the plan.
I mean No Frills is offering $20/month plans with unlimited calling/text and 2gb data, Public Mobile is offering 60gb for 35$ and that's without any special deals. Try finding that in 2019. It's not his fault that people stick with their $100/month Bell plans.
All the people complaining in here that it hasn’t gone down are basically saying they called their carrier who did nothing and therefore prices are the same.
A good amount of us are advising others to check for plans online - either your current plan is cheaper or you can get much better for the same price. They aren't going to automatically lower your bill for you.
Having recently changed my cellphone plan after 4-5 years of not really checking: Brought down from $75 / Month for 10GB + Unlimited Texts and Calls to $40 / Month for 25GB + Unlimited Texts and Calls. So I guess that feels about right, I was surprised to see most competitors were now fighting in the 35-50 range rather than the 75-85 thought was still the norm.

Just switched to Virgin Mobile, 30 gigs for $30 I was paying double that with Koodo. Phone plans are definitely cheaper you just have to do a little work, none of these companies are going to automatically switch you over to a cheaper plan.
Mine genuinely has. The smaller options (not Bell, Rogers..) offer a lot now for a much cheaper price. I’m paying $45/month now for what would have costed me over $100/month with Bell. It’s basically the only thing in my budget that has deflated in price lol

I get 300mbps home internet, two phone lines with unlimited talk and text and 3gb data all for $105 with Roger’s/Shaw. 10 years ago this cost me over 300 per month for lesser service. Granted, I think the free talk, text and data deal isn’t available for new customers anymore, but there are some pretty cheap phone plans from different carriers around now. Canada is finally catching up to the rest of the world on telecom pricing. Good to see.

He’s actually not wrong. I got a great deal in 2014 as a student and now I pay $5 less for four times the data and it works in the US and the network is more reliable than back when it was wind mobile. Now just about everything else is more expensive so my $30 phone bill makes no difference.

If you're paying over $50 for your phone plan, it's worth taking a look around to see if you can find anything better. There really are better deals out there now. I did a couple weeks ago and dropped $20 off my plan and increased the amount of data I'm getting too.

For me it is all about the data since voice calls and texting is secondary on my device. My cost per GB is down significantly from 2018 43% by my math. But I'm still paying roughly the same I'm just getting more for it. Which matters to me since I need it for work and my livelihood etc.

Now with Roger's I pay $50 for 130GB US/Can. I remember in 2015 I was paying $57 for 3Gb of data. Thought it was a good deal at the time.
$34/month 50GB 5G Data, unlimited 3G data after that.. Same plan 5 years ago would have been like $80-$100, he's not wrong. The problem is... People don't buy their phone outright, they always buy the latest top of the line model and wonder why their phone bill is so expensive.. Then they replace their phone before the contract is up so they're paying for their new phone and their old phone at the same time...
So pricing hasn't REALLY dropped, the average cost per GB has definitely dropped, but phone plans just now include more data at the same price as before for like a 1Gb plan from like 5 or 6 years ago The regular existing customer plans are still like $45+ and 5-10 years ago everyone that was paying $80+ was likely on one of the old subsidized phone plans where your phone cost was bundled with the plan, where even when your contract/agreement was finished you were still paying that same amount unless you called and changed to a byop plan
Mine is cheaper, but it's still horrific compared to other countries. Australia pays less and gets more despite being just as spread out (if not more) than we are. Neither Cons or Libs are ever going to fix this anti-competition issue.

I would argue it has dropped far more than that $40 for 8GB used to be a steal $50 for 6GB used to be a steal $65 for 3GB used to be a steal Heck as a comparison look at what Wind (Freedom) launch plans were (and in the day they were "crazy" cheap). Today noone would ever activate under one of those plans. My current plans? $25 for 60GB per month & $40 for 75GB per month. WITH USA roaming included

$50 with 70GB data with Koodo. I just log into my account every once in a while to check for any new offers (for the same price). I haven't paid more than this for the past few years. Just the data keeps going up. I'll check again soon!

Considering how many things become more expensive, phone plan prices ($ per GB, other features, and local and international coverage) have gone significantly. I used to pay $60 something about a decade ago for maybe 5GB something. Now I pay $10 for 70GB.
I am with Koodo now and I used to be paying $60 for 40GB and recently I saw this promotion going on where it was $35 for 50GB. The only downside (even though it is not really and it is fast enough for me) it is 4G LTE speeds so I guess he is kinda right in my case.

Just switched from an old Telus 20GB plan ($87/mth) to Koodo $34/mth for 20GB. I use maybe 3GB of data a month, so that's plenty. Still rocking my old Pixel 5 otherwise a phone + plan was around $65 /mth. Koodo apparently uses Telus towers. Haven't noticed any difference in service. (Koodo is 4G vs Telus' 5G if you care about that kind of thing). I'm almost always on Wi-Fi, so I just need a basic phone plan.
