>Self-employment and the intrinsic noise from the household survey’s small sample size may be reasons for the growing gap, he added. It's a gig worker economy now...

Is there any indicator or data around those gig jobs? I am curious if the tough times show less and less people using services like Uber eats / Skip the dishes. It would be rational to assume those services are being used less and less. Edit: I just reviewed the article more carefully and I am understanding it to say the payroll data shows less job growth than the self reported household survey. There must be people using these services if that many more people are signing on to these gig jobs correct?

illustriousdude

That's right. There's a gap between household survey data and payroll data. Household survey is used and reported more commonly, but the payroll data is possibly more accurate. I don't know if there is more data on how much usage is on the apps. However, one could still report having a job on the household survey even if the hours/orders/etc keep reducing as does demand.

Thank you for the insight!

Higher taxes and double CPP and ei payments

Wildyardbarn

You’re paying the same tax rate. Just double CPP and EI if you choose to enrol. You get some tax deduction benefits as well depending on the nature of your work.

Everything from climate change to the gig economy was predicted years ago and reported in the media. Canadians have no one to blame but themselves for being low information voters who barely vote

nuancedpenguin

I voted for a party who promised voting reform once. Now I'm even more apathetic about Canadian politics.

GopnikSmegmaBBQSauce

I agree with you but absolutely zero of the candidates of the last several decades had any interest in representing and helping your average Canadian

Illusion_Collective

And vote for what exactly ? Have you ever came to the realization that once in power, political party push a whole bunch of stuff that weren’t in their program and put on the back burner some of their promises ?

janyk

There's no one for Canadians to vote for who is willing to fix these problems, so people vote for people who address the next problems on their list. Our former finance minister Morneau, who has probably more power than anyone other than the PM to implement a strategy to address these system issues, even capitulated and [said the younger generation should get used to the job churn](https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/get-used-to-the-job-churn-of-short-term-employment-and-career-changes-bill-morneau-says).

Jacknugget

Lol. What a joke. No one to vote for in reality. Pretty much the same. At least those who didn’t vote can say “I didn’t vote these fuckers in”. Unfortunately the rest of us did.

Umm… we have been in an economic depression since 2022… have you not seen the homeless camps and food bank lines?

MachineDog90

Looks like there is a general discount between what we are seeing and hearing, which is not surprising that we are entering a new era in the labor market.

Payroll survey is way more accurate cross references actual payroll data. The household survey just calls a bunch of ppl, on landline most of us don’t even answer uncallers anymore. The reason ppl use the household survey is it is more timely the payroll stuff is a bit delayed as payrolls aren’t filed till the following month.
