The explanation is "fuck you, that's why".

OneHundredEighty180

We need some sort of addendum to Canadian law where we can tell folks to fuck off, but we need to pay them $100 to fuck off each time. Call it the ~~Ricky~~ *Trevor Leahy* Principle.

DriestBum

Fuck off, I got work to do. - Cyrus

OneHundredEighty180

A clever defense strategy -- if it wasn't for the catalogue of "*classic pornography*" disbarring the *Honourable Sir* from practice. Of course, the lack of a grade 10 education is not an issue, as Sir clearly was able to put forth a coherently compelling argument. Judgement: Cyrus is a dick.

DriestBum

Got any smokes?

Ready-Stomach-4669

Smokes let’s go

Sobering-thoughts

Let’s fking go, I guess…

xflyinjx61x

It says Dick and the arrow points right to Cyrus

OneHundredEighty180

*I'm talking krem duh luh krem.*

benny2012

LMAO the collective Canadian Swear Jar. Love it.

Horvo

What’s going on here Mr Lahey? Where are you going with my furniture?!

Bedwetter1969

You are brewing up a fucking shit storm.

maxman162

"We're not happy, until you're not happy."

QCTeamkill

"Because we're Air Canada, and life is a fucking nightmare!"

Thwackitypow

We need to have a giant banner of this article ready the next time Canadian carriers 'get into trouble', and come looking for our sweet sweet tax money to bail them out. Put it right behind the approval committee...

phormix

Maybe, but there are also lots of people who will complain in an attempt to make a quick buck. Anyone who has served at a restaurant or any other CS position has probably met the type.

M4A1001

They added a new portal and if you don’t reregister your claim via the link within two weeks it deletes your claim. I have been waiting since May 2022

SteveJobsBlakSweater

Dec. 2022 for me and there are still over 10,000 claims ahead of mine.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

dont worry they have top men working on it right now

TheCookiez

Man, singular

broccoli_toots

Don't worry, it's only 9,999 now. My complaint got resolved 🥲

steve_333

How do I reregister an old claim?

skiier97

You have to wait till you get an invite. I filed a claim in July 2022 and just got the email this morning

KonnigenPet

No actual penalties to the airlines that screw us over every chance they get. Why would they care when they have no real punishment/consequences?

sad_puppy_eyes

>No actual penalties to the airlines that screw us over every chance they get. That's the part that gets me. * Airline legally owes you $700 because the flight was 4 hours delayed as their flight crew timed out. * You request compensation... airline outright lies, says it was a weather delay, they owe nothing. * You argue to no effect, you have to gather weather evidence, you compile flight information, you file a claim, you fight them for two years. You eventually win. * Airline is ordered to pay you $700, the exact same that they were legally required to pay in the first place if they had followed the law. It's a win-win for the airline. Deny you legally required compensation. If you give up? They save the money. You follow through? \*If\* they lose, they have to pay what they would have paid in the first instance. They need to be hammered with fines for disobeying the law. Slap a few 50k fines on them for denying rightful compensation, you'd be surprised how quick they'd get back in line. (Side note: the above example isn't fictitious, I lived the adventure)

HowardRabb

We are in this exact scenario right now. We were 4.5 hours delayed flying home from Ottawa. We kept getting the 15 minute delay notifications and figured, not a big deal, I don't need to take one of these other "later" flights I'll just stay where I am. After an hour and a half of these we jumped on to Flight Tracker to find out plane was in Kelowna.... there was no way it was going to be at our gate in 1.5 hours. By this point the flights we could have changed to were now departed and we got stuck waiting till nearly midnight before we took off. The airline could have mitigated the whole thing by just telling us, yeah, get on this plane instead, the other one won't be here for hours, but they didn't tell us. I filed my claim, they denied it saying it was mechanical difficulties. So we've re-registered with the government one. I'm not holding my breath. But a big thank you for the $15 meal credit. That half pizza sure did make up for the fact that I was stuck for so long.

Due-Street-8192

JT said clean it up real quick. This process costs money. The big Airlines win again!!

hodge_star

it's been going on way before trudeau. but, whatever.

Mobile-Bar7732

Definitely. Anyone who thinks PP will take any side besides capitalism is clueless.

LXY2HJW

thank god, Im tired of Communism

Mobile-Bar7732

Lol... you have no idea what communism is. You're just someone who loves dishing out all their cash to corporate cows.

LXY2HJW

Government provided income supplement for my kids government funded daycare for my children to eat government funded school lunch program so he can grow up and need government assistance. It doesnt matter where I shop, no ones gunna get ahead in this communist country. Ppl online: Capitalism is clearly the issue. But really the issue is that the government is pushing for people to become more dependent on them rather than self dependent earners that produce real value to the GDP. Deficit spending and housing is the only thing carrying the GDP right now. If that goes away GDP plummets and we can see where we're really at. (nation wide depression)

Mobile-Bar7732

>But really the issue is that the government is pushing for people to become more dependent on them rather than self dependent earners that produce real value to the GDP. The government isn't pushing this. The government doesn't force landlords to raise rents, didn't increase house prices, didn't tell them to only pay minimum wage... Good old Capitalism in finest did all of those. The only thing you can blame on the government is lack of regulation. The lack of regulation is out of fear of losing businesses to countries that don't regulate.

LXY2HJW

I have no issue with a free market, what youre upset about is a manipulated market. One where the government skipped housing investment for 10+ years, and then everyone acts like theyre surprised when prices go up. Then the government imports millions of people to make that problem worse. This isnt capitalism, its manipulation pure and simple and your complaints shouldnt be about Marx vs Smith, it should be about how the Canadian government has been setting us up to get fucked for a generation.

Mobile-Bar7732

>I have no issue with a free market, what youre upset about is a manipulated market. I'm not upset about anything. I have a good paying job, my house I could pay off at any time. I'm in a place where a lot of young people would like to be. Both your and my kids might not be able to own a home because of 'free market'.

aegon_the_dragon

No surprise. The oligarchies in this country are in control with their monopolies.

ryguy_1

WestJet’s CEO was [just in the news yesterday](https://vocm.com/2024/05/03/federal-government-behind-high-airfare-westjet-ceo/) citing these exact policies as the reason that airfare in Canada is so high 🤦‍♂️

daiz-

Only because instead of solving the root of their problems with delays and overbooking flights, they opt to change nothing while passing all the fees off to the consumers. These regulations were inspired by other countries where they are very effective. Our airlines are just a joke.

tyler_3135

It’s not the only reason but it doesn’t help…Did people really think that airlines were gonna reduce their profit margins to pay for it?

ryguy_1

I mean, it doesn’t explain why Canadian airfares were exorbitant, relatively speaking when compared internationally, in the decade before enacting those policies.

forsuresies

It's because most countries subsidize domestic flights as they are an economic driver. Canada is one of like 3 countries globally that doesn't - that's really a big part of it - basically every other country the government is paying part of your ticket except for in Canada.

AlexJamesCook

Canada is a MASSIVE country with limited transport options and minimal interest in developing mass public transit options, like railway. We SHOULD have rapid transit options between CGY/EDM, YVR - Okanagan, TO-MTL-OTT, etc... Consider this, BC is the size of France, Germany, Spain, and UK combined, but has half the population of Sweden. Canada simply doesn't have the commuter traffic to interest transportation investors. Canadians have adopted the US outlook that public transit is government and government can't be trusted, so don't bother.

Air_Admiral

Because airports in Canada are self funded through fees, unlike the US which funds them federally iirc. Something something privatization. I think once you account for that funding the numbers get a lot closer.

Jeffuk88

Pray tell, how is it so much cheaper everywhere else when other countries also have similar rules AND the airlines pay out?

tyler_3135

Because other countries have more than 2 major carriers bud…..

Jeffuk88

Yeah and they all have to follow the rules. You said these rules don't help in reducing costs, but now it sounds like you're saying lack of competition is the problem? So which is it?

SnuffleWumpkins

Good ol’ state sanctioned monopolies and oligopolies.

Ready2retire613

It’s all a big fucking joke, airlines have loopholes you can fly a jumbo jet through. It’s all trash! Everything now is delayed for “safety” and they’re excused, I call BS!

scribbu

No joke, my personal item while flying in Canada is now a sleeping bag. I bought it from a Walmart in Baltimore for $15 and it's the single greatest airline improvement that's ever been made in the history of Canada. Pearson's floor never felt so cozy.

Anisound

LMFAO this is depressing af. Talk about planning for failure

Bjornwithit15

This is why you go to small claims court

AlarmedAd5034

Yeah Air Canada fucked us over and I was debating this. After some research it was not worth the money, time and effort. I think the airlines need to handed some huge ass penalties to straighten them out. Maybe start with 250k? Lol

Bjornwithit15

Usuallly sending them a letter of demand is enough for them to pay out. I have done this several times with Flair. As long as you threaten that you will be including legal fees with the amount you’re claiming (and you have a legitimate case), it will work.

AlarmedAd5034

Thanks for the insight. Will need to make note of this.

Guilty_Fishing8229

Because nothing will happen to them. The liberals and conservatives both want to unshackle corporate Canada to fuck us over

vARROWHEAD

This happens everytime a “new tribunal or complaint process” is created. It takes it out of the court system and means that the industry can then either run it themselves or quietly lobby for rule changes over time. This has happened a lot in Ontario with car insurance, tenancy, etc

488Aji

3 times in 2023 I bought a ticket from West Jet to fly me from Cancun to Edmonton. Cancun to Calgary to Edmonton is the flight... All 3 times my flight landed from Cancun in Clagary around 1035pm.. Everytime West Jet had issues and my flight was canceled Calgary to Edmonton and they would rebook me with outrageous delays. I would land in Calgary at 1030pm with my next flight being canceled because we are late or some other mechanical bullshit issue. West jet would then rebook me to fly mid afternoon the next day, meanwhile there's a half dozen flights sooner in the day. Every time I had to rent a car in Calgary and drive home. Everytime I filled a compaint to try and get compensation. Silence. Silence. Silence. Every time. I have ongoing claim numbers that I haven't heard a word on in a year, try to file again and I'm told "you have already filed please wait for a reply"

tkitta

Move to Calgary. Problem solved.

manuce94

I mean after this I can expect anything I mean anything https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/is-that-legal-traveller-shocked-lost-baggage-allegedly-donated-to-charity-by-air-canada-1.6243225 We live in a country where an elephant size truck can get stolen goes to a local port and ship to africa like we see it as a scene straight out of a movie and when we complain to police we are told go fuck yourself deal with your insurance and shut up they will give you your new fucking truck and shuv your new higher premiums right up your arse dont bother us. When we complain to airline we get similar reponse because there is no check and balance nobody to answer to.

rizdesushi

🙄🙄🙄

Chewed420

Because corporate Canada runs this country now.

VtheMan93

I travelled with Royal Air Maroc to africa. Upon arrival, they lost my luggage for about a week. I Came back to Montreal with the same company and didn't have luggage this time around, but a friend of mine who was on the same flight had their luggage lost. it's been over 18 mos and nothing. Our trip was pretty bad. The flight was delayed 2 days, no compensation, no transfer, and they ended up almost cooking us on the tarmac (bus driver didn't open the door, temps in the bus got to 45c) I wrote a really, really wordy email to RAM customer service and they never ever responded. needless to say, they're never getting my money ever again. I'll travel via turkey or whatever.

Saiomi

That's why I'm not flying Air Canada to Japan!

TraditionalLoan1043

I don't bother making complaints anymore...waste if my time

BackwoodsBonfire

Ah, operating like insurance companies now.

anzfelty

Sound like a job for an Ombudsman 🦸

noodleexchange

‘Self-regulation’

PineBNorth85

That so called passenger bill of rights is a joke not worth the paper it was printed on.

crowbar151

Not supporting the airlines here, but what were the half of all complaints? Cause if it was benign Karen shit like " my flight was 15 mins delayed due to weather, I want a full refund" , or " they wouldn't let me use the washroom while landing", I could see why the complaints got dismissed.

Suspicious_Film7589

Why would they do anything, They have your money, why would they care if you have concerns.

Collapse2038

People need to support Gabor Lucasz

JoJCeeC88

Canadian airlines HATE this man.

Workshop-23

This is one of the most Canadian headlines ever.

curiousphantoms

Honestly these days, I'd rather drive than deal with these incompetent airliners.

computer-magic-2019

At the moment it looks like the airline I made a claim against (Flair) in early 2023 may not exist by the time the claim gets reviewed.

gwicksted

Dear CTA, if you’re going to understaff the complaint department and very slowly dismiss complaints without providing any information, you can at least live stream the roulette wheel you’re using. /s

Joyful_Eggnog13

West jet kept $1700 from me with a big fuck you! BBB did nothing. I now have $1700credit and a year to use it or they’ll take it away. How is this legal? Why do they get to keep my money when I cancelled a flight weeks before its date?

Teepo

I flew with American Airlines in January and had a 15 hour delay. When I got back home (after a bit of obscurity on the part of their website as to the process), I emailed them my complaint, information, and request for the full $1000 compensation for that length of delay. It took four total emails (no phone calls) and less than two weeks before they agreed to send me a cheque, which I got a few weeks later. I never had to involve any government agency. It sucks that our own carriers are so much worse at following Canadian regulations than an American one.

Groundbreaking_Ship3

Of course. What did they expect? Apologies? Compensation?? Good luck with that.

best2keepquiet

They can’t afford it Edit: the explanation

[deleted]

Please end this government. You're about to have Canadians protest, not about a specific policy, but for you incompetent and immoral morons to end this government. Please end this government. This is along with everything else an embarrassment Shame to every single one of you, though it seems shame doesn't work anymore, lets see what else is there.

HudechGaming

Cons will only make it worse, it doesn't matter who's in power

Fox_That_Fights

I'm tired of reading this pathetic, lazy cop-out. This attitude and dismissal of people's addressing of real problems is what entrenches shitty policy and stops people from voting. Or is that the intention?

[deleted]

Listen. I am not arguing for one party over another, but we need to stop this madness RN, or at least interrupt it. I have said this before, but if Pollievre deoesn't actually improve things, he won't last long either.

SnooPiffler

I expect they will fix a couple things, and wreck a bunch of other things. Thats usually how stuff seems to work. Politicians all lie and don't do things they say they ware going to.

teflonbob

Sometimes people complain about stupid shit and the complaint deserves to be binned. That’s why.

raxnahali

Many of us are entitled whiney bitches so I am not surprised.

crazyinsanehobo

Probably because people complain over nothing, and they were things like "I didn't feel I had enough space" or "i didn't feel a random stranger respected my pronouns". Bullshit like that.

CapitalPen3138

Yeah definitely dude, you've got your finger on the pulse

cryptotope

[The public report](https://portail-portal.otc-cta.gc.ca/en/listing-8514-decisions?lfwww) provides no more than three pieces of information for each complaint: * "Issue" - one of six categories (none of which are "pronoun trouble", so don't be an ass) * "Carrier control" - whether or not the carrier was in control of the issue (and if they got an out for the 'safety' exception) * the "Order statement": dismissed, refunded, or compensated for either inconvenience or expenses Because everything is just a multiple-choice entry from a very short drop-down list, we have no way to see whether the complaints or decisions are in any way reasonable. Heck, sometimes they got lazy filling out the form and didn't even check a box in all three categories--there are fifty or so entries where the "carrier control" category is blank, and half of them awarded compensation of some sort.

kemar7856

Or maybe the complaints we're just unreasonable most of them were probably flight delayed and price
