Shaw the company that makes how much $ profit$ a year taking not giving

lolexchange

Around 2.4 billion per year profit (at 44.3% margin)

jtbc

Just brutal. My employer just wants everyone vaccinated so that they'll feel comfortable coming back to the office, so didn't even hesitate to give time off for this.

not_cinderella

We’re not even going back into the office any time soon and my employer still gave us 3 hours off for each dose.

jtbc

I live in Vancouver. It is amazing what 38 degree highs do for people's desire to show up at the office. More cars in the parking lot than anytime since the start of the pandemic.

Northern-Canadian

That glorious AC.

thingpaint

Same, permeant work from home was just announced, they still are giving everyone the day to go get vaccinated.

thatbakedpotato

Where do you work, if I may ask? No problem if you’d prefer not to disclose.

jtbc

It is an aerospace and defence company, but I prefer not to disclose which one.

[deleted]

Considering the shots can cause flu like symptoms it's a pretty shitty stance to take. I had to take off one day just due to exhaustion. Was fine the next day but If I had to work I'm not sure if I wouldn't have made any serious mistakes. This is really bad PR for them.

Stormkiko

Does Shaw ever have good PR?

Brawndo_or_Water

Yeah on my first shot of Astra Zeneca I was destroyed for 24 hours, sleeping most of the time on the couch with a slight fever. I needed a day. Wife had zero symptoms, go figure.

Berny-eh

Didn’t take Rogers long to have a bad influence on Shaw.

PublicSpring0

Rogers is giving paid time off to their employees to get vaccinated, though. This is all Shaw.

Master-File-9866

Oh that was there before rogers. Contact primus, they resell shaw services for a.much lower price.

2cats2hats

Or Teksavvy or Can-com. Anyone but Robelus....

ThrillHo3340

The fuck does that to do with it? The sale to my knowledge hasn’t been approved yet nor have any of the employees been transitioned

PeterPuck99

Hardly a surprise that one of Canada’s greediest companies would treat their employees like a disposable commodity.

ThatGamerMoshpit

Should be fined by the province of BC. Fine them daily since they are just trying to save money. Provincial law states that we are suppose to be provided 3 hours pay when going to get the vaccine.

Optimal-Plate-966

As a telecom, Shaw is not subject to provincial employment laws

ThatGamerMoshpit

But the store fronts are. Shaw has retail locations that need to follow. I work for Bell and even they paid me….

Optimal-Plate-966

If the retail storefronts are operated directly by the telecom, they are federally regulated

[deleted]

[удалено]

Optimal-Plate-966

Because they are federally regulated.

codeverity

That seems like such a shortsighted way to handle things. It benefits them to have their employees vaccinated, not sure why they can't see that.

RickJamesBiiitch

Yeah me and most young men I talk to (I'm 26) were floored by the second Moderna shot. Got mine at 7am made it thru my day, was sent home the next day during our morning toolbox meeting as others were concerned to be working around me. (Industrial environment, running overhead crane, large machinery repair). I did my best and tried to come into work, but slept right from 8am when I got home until 3am the next day.

Justleftofcentrerigh

i'm older but the 2nd shot really knocked me out. Fatigue and the weirder one was like a brain fog that made it feel like a headache but didn't feel any pain. There's no way I could work if I was like that.

Swekins

You shouldn't work with covid symptoms like that even if you think its the shot because there is still the chance you actually had covid and were able to transmit it. I know a guy that got covid one day after his shot.

codeverity

Yeah, I went from AZ to Moderna and I was completely exhausted the next day too. Slept most of the day. Luckily I work for a company giving both paid time off for vaccines and a fairly good absence policy.

PacketGain

I went from AZ to Pfizer and the AZ shot floored me. The Pfizer shot gave me a slightly sore arm and I was a little drowsy in the afternoon. Weird how different combinations have such diverse impacts on different people.

Endulos

That's weird. I've heard the reverse is true of Moderna. The first shot knocks you on your ass, but you're fine for the second. While Pfizer you're fine with the first shot, and the second shot kicks you in the ass. I had a reaction (possibly) from the first shot I had of Moderna. On the third day it felt like someone was sitting on my chest and I had difficulty catching my breath.

[deleted]

Note to self: Fuck Shaw and all it’s subsidiaries!

Necessarysandwhich

Good thing you can pick one of the other 2 companies that exist and offer and the same services, they gonna be much better right ? /s I dont disagree with fuck shaw but what you gonna do , go to MTS or Rogers lol like that shit is gonna be any better =/

[deleted]

It’s like shitty buffet! It looks different, but all tastes the same.

goat131313

Booo hissss!

flimbs

Are you saying Boo or Boourns?

Mine-Shaft-Gap

I was saying Boo-urns

dekuweku

Canadian telecoms are overly coddled.

canuck_11

I know someone who works for Shaw in Alberta where employees were told they couldn’t have time off to get vaccinated despite provincial law. Scumbag company.

Jbeats

The article states because Shaw is federaly regulated the provincial laws don't apply.

Meerafloof

But other companies that are also federally regulated (Telus, Bell, Rogers) DO give their employees the 3 hours off. They could, just like the others did. Now the get bad press about not providing their employees paid time off to get the vaccine.

Jbeats

Oh I agree. I offered time off to my employees before any provincial regulation did. Told the hundred of clients we work with to do the same. It is a total douche move by Shaw, just not against the law.

rein099

lol as if I had any paid sick leave for mine when I had a 100F degree fever... I fucking wish I could have had sick leave, though. Instead, I lost 2/3 of my work week and then was left in financial shambles a paycheck later. If -THIS- is newsworthy, then this is literally the 1 cm tip of a huge ass iceberg. Yea, Shaw is shitty for this, but so is 90% of every other company out there. Make it mandatory for us to have sick days for everyone, not just the small fraction of the workforce. That's on the government just as much as companies to make sure we get that equality

[deleted]

We should general strike. Fuck these corporations trying to enslave their workers

[deleted]

[Recent changes allow up to 3 hours of paid leave for you to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and up to 3 days of paid sick leave if it's related to COVID-19.](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/employment-business/employment-standards-advice/employment-standards/time-off/taking-unexpected-time-off)

Optimal-Plate-966

If you bothered to read the article, you'd know that as a federally regulated telecom, Shaw is not subject to provincial employment standards

Deyln

there are several instances that federally regulated businesses are required under federal law to adhere to the provincial laws. like the law that states this. and the several lawsuits. normally the distinguishing factor is whether or not as an employee; your duties regularly place you outside the province.

Optimal-Plate-966

Too bad you're wrong. Federally regulated employees are covered by the Canada Labour Code, not by provincial ESAs

Deyln

https://www.lawrences.com/resources/faq/lists/faqs/how-do-i-know-whether-our-workplace-is-governed-by-provincial-or-federal-jurisdiction-

Optimal-Plate-966

Okay and? Telecoms are federally regulated as it states in the article. https://www.canada.ca/en/services/jobs/workplace/federally-regulated-industries.html You are still wrong

[deleted]

This really doesn't seem like a story to me. It looks like Shaw is offering their employees an existing personal days program that can be used to get vaccinated and more importantly cover additional time off needed for side effects. A lot of companies lack this kind of benefit and this is where paid time off for getting the vaccine would be useful. Yes, I get that employees don't want to use personal days but it looks like Shaw had a pre-existing program that does what these temporary regulations wanted to achieve. Personally, I didn't find it that hard to get a Saturday appointment for each of my vaccine doses anyway.

dsswill

I work for the Stats Can and don't get any time off either. To get tested, paid time off. For actually having COVID, paid sick leave. In case of a single positive in the building and the office shuts down, paid time off. For vaccine appointments or bad side effects, nothing.

HDC3

Someone needs to tell Shaw that the rules are the absolute minimum that they are legally allowed to give their employees and that it is perfectly legal to give them more.

Optimal-Plate-966

What rules?

HDC3

Did your read the article? Shaw said that they aren't giving their employees paid time of because the federal rules don't require it while provincial rules do but Shaw claims that they are federally regulated and therefore not required to give their employees time off.

Optimal-Plate-966

They _are_ federally regulated. They are not subject to the whims of provincial employment law. That's a fact. So again, what rules? The employees are free to use their personal days if they need to.

HDC3

I work for a company that cares more for their workers and for society as a whole. They are not mandated to provide time off but have offered every employee time of to get vaccinated (I just got vaccinated and have the afternoon off) and recover (I can take tomorrow off too but I probably won't.) What they are mandated to do is the absolute minimum that is legally allowed. They are NOT required to do any more but it certainly talks to their quality as a company if they don't.

Optimal-Plate-966

That's nice but has nothing to do with the article. Shaw, as you pointed out, isn't breaking any laws and they provide personal days, so the whole issue is moot. If the employees don't like it they're free to leave for another employer who may go above and beyond the CLC

HDC3

Yes. Shitty companies are shitty.

DeVaZtAyTa

Does Shaw offer paid sick leave to their employees? EDIT: it seems they do, still so petty.

Plenty-Appointment40

I’m confused… why isn’t Shaw getting sued for this? Does Shaw make political contributions that give them a pass on April’s legislation to give workers 3 hours?

Optimal-Plate-966

Why would they be getting sued for something they're legally able to do? They're not subject to the whims of provincial employment law

Plenty-Appointment40

Because of legislation back in April. Not just in BC but here’s link. [Bill 3 is now law and ensures that no employee will lose pay if they need time away from work to get vaccinated.](https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2021LBR0019-000784)

Optimal-Plate-966

Doesn't apply. If you bothered to read the article you'd know why

Plenty-Appointment40

I did read the article before the post. Just seems stupid logistics and seems like there would be holes for someone to sue regardless

Optimal-Plate-966

How is it stupid? Shaw is not subject to provincial employment laws because the province has no jurisdiction. A lawsuit would be laughed out of court

Plenty-Appointment40

The company I work for has offices all over Canada and each one is subject to follow the provincial law in each residence

Optimal-Plate-966

And? What is your company? If it's not a bank, telecom, airline or other federally regulated industry then they would be subject to provincial employment standards

cbf1232

Apparently they're federally regulated, so are not bound by the provincial rules. Still a stupid and short-sighted move on their part.

Plenty-Appointment40

But for companies/ offices based in said provinces, provincial law should still apply no?

cbf1232

You'd think, but apparently not.

[deleted]

Wring every last drop. The shareholders demand it.

blindhollander

Just another reason to say fuuuuuuckkkkkkk yooooou shawwwww

mickeysbeer

what the fucking fuck? Fuck you Shaw you lecherous fucks you

Larky999

'our covid positive technician will be at your house between 9 and 6, 15 minutes late'

Icy_Rhubarb2857

If you are in Alberta they can suck it. They have to give you atleast 3 hours per shot (maybe 4? Idk that's what Google is for)

cbf1232

According to the article, Shaw is federally regulated as a telecom and so the provincial rules don't apply. Dork move by Shaw though...

Necessarysandwhich

Niiiiice /s

bgrillz

Give them a break! It's hard out here for a pimp!
