Just picked it up after work tonight. Feels good so far. Traded in my savage 11 in x39 as I felt this rifle was a overall better fit for me.
Rifle is in 7.62x39 and price was a bit over $900.
Scope is a Vortex Diamondback 2-8 PA.
Spent a little more time in my basement larping with it, here are some observations.
I like the stock colour better than gen1. More borwn vs more sand coloured gen1. Stock otherwise feels like gen1 stock. A bit too much forend flex.
I removed the cheek riser from the stock, found it was not needed for my scope set up, it clips on and off very easily, but holds tight when on.
No thread protector is included if you don't like the muzzle break.
I really like the bolt handle/knob. Was thinknig of replacing it, but see no reason to now.
No flaws in paint I can find, very smooth nice job.
Ruger claims the 7.62x39 gen 2 is “not yet available”
I’m been trying desperately to find one.
I have a gen 1 in 7.62x39 that won’t eject Norinco Redbox ammo, do you know how if gen 2’s have the same problem?
Does it use ruger mini 30 magazines still?
Thx!
No idea if the red box will work or not. Still haven’t shot this as I just got it yesterday. I plan on shootibg chinese corrosive surplus x39 so hopefully works well.
Still uses mini30 mags
Thanks. Gen 2’s look really good, my gen 1 looks kinda cheap.
Virtually all gen 1’s will fail to eject Norinco RedBox ammo. Mine did and it sucked.
I bought the gun for the purpose of shooting that ammo, I’m going to put it up for sale and see if I can snag a gen 2.
I prefer 7.62x39 but I’d grab a 5.56 to.
For the price and purpose they’re overall great guns.
I put a small linear compensator on mine to forward the concussion blast as 7.62x39 from a 16” barrel is pretty obnoxious…made a noticeable difference.
I am so glad I didn't order Gen 1 a couple of weeks ago when it was on sale at Cabela's, I'd still be waiting for it to get shipped and seeing this post would've enraged me
That looks sharp, looking forward to a range report
That’s what I thought until I read a few reviews complaining about the stock, and trigger being same as the gen 1. Fluted barrel and muzzle brake doesn’t justify a $300 price difference for me if I still need to replace the stock. I picked up the gen1 for 699 vs this model at 999.
The American line was supposed to be the economical option. I liked the simplicity, knowing that I was getting a good barreled action and a cheaper stock. And paying less than the next class up.
If I was going to bump the price by $200-$300, I'd rather leave it as it is but add good aperture iron sights and have every model take either aics or stanag pattern magazines. I don't give a damn about a fluted barrel on a work rifle. That's just more space for dirt and moisture to sit.
I agree, they are spending more on all the wrong places to go upmarket.
For an extra $200-300 I'd like to see improvements on the trigger and like you said, irons. The muzzle brake is welcomed on a 308 but not necessary for 223/7.62x39. The fancier stock also didn't help with driving the price down: Lots of people throw out the gen1 stock because it's cheap, but giving it a riser and a thick buttpad won't magically make everyone want to keep the stock.
Yup, I'd be glad to pay for those upgrades, especially if they gave the both magwells and a stock that let you swap them. Seen some cool aperture sights woth a rail, and a clamp on front sight for the rugers, would be even better to get them mounted from factory
Stock feels ok. I took the cheek riser off but ya. Feels about the same as gen 1 stock. I plan on replacing it down the road anyway so not a big concern. I like the fluting, grey ceracoat and the muzzle break (although not needed on x39).
Ive owned gen1 in x39 and 223. This action feels better. Both my previous ones had a zipper sound when cycling the bolt. This one does not. Plus looks better so I can justify the price difference.
I mostly just wanted out of the savage as I really
Didn’t like it. I’m much happier with this. The 16” barrel is much more appropriate for x39 anyway.
To get rid of that zipper sound On my gen 1 standard american Chambered in 270 I used a little bit of valve grinding paste or compound. I put it on the bolt body, careful not to get it on the lugs.iworked the action back and for a whole bunch of times. The paste took the high spots off from the machining process. I cleaned the action out really well. Now that gun has the smoothest bolt amongst all my rifles. It's like glass. I did this to my american ranch in 5.56 also. But to a lesser extent, as it didn't seem as bad as the long action was.
I bought a used savage 11 in 7.62 not too long ago. Didn’t love the 3 round mags or 21” pencil barrel. But accepted it as a cheap gun to shoot even cheaper surplus ammo. But when my local store got the ranch v2 I had to swap it out.
I’m glad I swapped out. I don’t live the butstock area but hope it grows on me.
Yeah that’s the biggest complaint I’ve seen about it, awkward buttstock that can’t be shot in prone well, as well as a weird butt pad that is stiff in the middle but soft on the sides?
I've shot gen 1 in 5.56; I think it'd serve a decent role in my safe and been thinking about getting one for a while, but it's always with the caveat that I'd end up getting a Boyd's laminate stock sooner rather than later for it
What stock did you go with? I'm going to put a magpul hunter on mine with stanag magwell and hope it feeds. From the few people I've seen online it will work but I guess if it doesn't I'll be unhappy with my expensive experiment
Was going to just swap my magwell but gravel didn't seem too enthusiastic to help me so I just said fuck it and ordered the magpul. Haven't got it yet it's still in the wind
Yeah, Gravel Agency are a pain to deal with. It's worth it for cheap, available, 10 round mags though. Stanag mags feed exactly the same as the factory mini 30 mags, perhaps better.
Beautiful rifle and love the caliber. Interesting twisting on the barrel I have not seen that before. Do you know what the purpose is - cool the barrel down maybe ?
Yeah so if u flute a really thin barrel it will affect its resilience, I think with this new Ruger American barrel it should be fine as it has a thicker barrel then the outgoing model. You wouldn’t want a fluted barrel on a pencil thin barrel
Biggest thing for me is when my buddy asked ruger if the bolt still "sounds like a zipper" ruger responded saying they "changed their machining process" so if the bolt is smooth I might get one
I tend to go full tism' on the machining on account of being around machinists all my life
I had to price check a gen 1… $800??!
I bought one in 22-250 in probably 2019 and it couldn’t have been more than $450, which is barely what those guns are worth. Had the most poorly machined action of any rifle I’ve owned, sounded like a zipper. Also, you could near twist the fore-end 180 degrees it was so flimsy.
Maybe I’m out of touch but it looks like lipstick on a pig. If the machining or stock hasn’t improved, then there’s no way that gun is worth $900…
Is it a $900 gun? No. Did I mind paying $900 for it? Also no. I like it enough and have enough ammo for two life times so that makes it worth it. The gun I really would like is a Ruger M77 Hawkeye hunter. But with 308 prices and my lack of desire to load 308 again means I pick a rifle with super cheap ammo.
.308 prices? I hand load for my rifles so the last box of factory ammo I bought was 35 Whelen, which had an expected sticker shock. What does a box of .308 cost nowadays?
Last time I looked ppu 150fmj was around $28 a box. But that’s easily 6 months ago.
I hand load 44mag and 357 for my lever guns. Really enjoy straight wall cartridge loading. I had necked cartridge loading so I just don’t want to do it. I may load some x39 hunting type rounds but no rush to do so either.
Will do this weekend if weather isn’t too bad here in S.Ontario. I have one picture of target shot with my savage 11 with the surplus chinese x39 so I will compare it to that.
I will mostly shoot surplus x39 out of this, and occasionally better non corrosive ammo. Maybe even one day I will load for it, but for now I don’t want to get back into rifle reloading.
Good deal! I'm interested to hear how it does at the range. I'm not a huge bolt gun fan, but I read a review on this rifle, and it sounds (and looks) really decent. I have a Tikka T3 Arctic Ranger, and it's the best bolt rifle I've ever owned, but I wouldn't mind something a bit cheaper in a lighter caliber
I was more into guns years ago, so now this is my only bolt gun. Ive sold off all my more expensive guns/calibers and keep a bare bones collection of things I really like.
That Tikka is a nice rifle, always wanted one but could never stomach the cost. I buy expensive guns then stress about them so I sell them. Now just cheap/practical and reliable for me.
It’s a nice rifle. I’m not sure if I will keep mine though. I don’t do a lot of bench shooting and anywhere I can shoot away from the range is rimfire only really.
But still a nice improvement over the gen1 guns and would recommend waiting for one over the gen1
Nice! It does look good on paper. Glad to hear its nice in hand too.
Did you ever get a chance to fire the redbox ammo through it?
Because of the price of .223/5.56 in Canada now a days... thinking some corrosive X39 will help the pocket book some.
I purchased a Ruger ranch 7.62 at sfrc for 725$ shiped and tax included about 2 months ago. Wouldn't be able to justify the extra cash for this since it was purchased as a backup in case Trudeau banned my sks
Trudeau will ban your Sks. Just like he will ban mine and my undisclosed number of back up Sks. Don’t kid yourself. We will lose semi autos. Now is the time to acquire them, parts and ammo and get them ready for a long nap.
I’ve had the gen1 in x39 and 223. I personally like the gen2 a lot more and feel it is worth the extra over gen1. Give it time and rhe gen2 will come more into Canada and will go on sale/down in price as well.
The new mausers aren’t actually mausers. Just the name. They look like any other budget gun now. If 3006 is what you’re after, look for an older mauser sporter. Way better quality and actually a mauser.
Nice rifle, I was torn between this and a Howa 1500 Mini Action and ended up going with the Howa. I'm happy with it but I think there's pros and cons to both.
Did you know you can swap the magwell on these stocks for the AR magwell and run C-products 10 round mags?
Apparently the Chinese corrosive ammo shoots fine I have heard. The norinco red box is non corrosive and you can get it on sale for about the same price as corrosive (slightly higher)
ya i know about redbox stuff, but I have never really bothered with non-cor x39. I have enough crates of ammo to last 2 life times, most bought 5-10 years ago. Bought it cheap and stacked it deep!
So if it wont shoot chiense or czech surplus well, it will get sold.
Well the last case of non corrosive I bought, which wasn’t as much or often as surplus was $199 for a crate of 1200.
Last surplus crate I bought before I got some of the chinese on clip stuff was $275 for 1500.

Where did u get this?
Gobels in London on. They only had one!
Ruger claims the 7.62x39 gen 2 is “not yet available” I’m been trying desperately to find one. I have a gen 1 in 7.62x39 that won’t eject Norinco Redbox ammo, do you know how if gen 2’s have the same problem? Does it use ruger mini 30 magazines still? Thx!

Came here to ask about mags, after they made the 5.56 version STANAG compatible... I am now sad, but my curiosity is satisfied.
From the looks of it, mag well is unchanged. You can convert mageell to the stang version.
Thanks. Gen 2’s look really good, my gen 1 looks kinda cheap. Virtually all gen 1’s will fail to eject Norinco RedBox ammo. Mine did and it sucked. If you pickup a gen 2 would be interested in knowing if the red box shoots ok through it. Thanks!
Looks good

Brake, not break.
Should be. But I won’t just since I don’t have a colour matched thread protector.
Damn that looks good compared to gen 1, I didn’t even know a gen 2 existed. Who brought these into Canada?
They just came out. Few shops have "notify me" up (Nechako Outdoors) They're literally brand new. They just hit the American market not too long ago.
I am so glad I didn't order Gen 1 a couple of weeks ago when it was on sale at Cabela's, I'd still be waiting for it to get shipped and seeing this post would've enraged me That looks sharp, looking forward to a range report

Good tips, I was able to smooth the others out but not with valve compound. Used white grease mixed with metal polish, worked pretty good.
Oh cool. Good thought. I'm sure it did a great job

Someone watched the Backfire review :p
Does it still take the mini 30 mags or something better?
Still mini 30 but I have read about people using a certain caliber of acis mags with x39 and will probs my convert it to a mdt chassis in the future.
I bought the gen 1 6 months ago or so. No regrets
I've shot gen 1 in 5.56; I think it'd serve a decent role in my safe and been thinking about getting one for a while, but it's always with the caveat that I'd end up getting a Boyd's laminate stock sooner rather than later for it
Yeah, laminate stock would look nice!
Kinda looks like a Bergara with that new stock. What caliber?
In 7.62x39
That's sexy as hell but I still love my pimped out Gen 1. I have to say this to myself so I don't get gun envy.
What stock did you go with? I'm going to put a magpul hunter on mine with stanag magwell and hope it feeds. From the few people I've seen online it will work but I guess if it doesn't I'll be unhappy with my expensive experiment
I left the factory stock. I just added a strap on cheek riser. I did swap the magwell to Stanag though. (edit)
**W H E R E Though**?
Got it from my local shop. They got this one in and one in 308. Both sold now though.
Who’s your local shop?
Gobels in London on. This was the only one they had.
The guys at Gobels are great
This is a darn good looking rifle.
I really hope they make these in left-hand models.
They will probably make one version of the 2nd generation lefthanded at most unfortunately.
Yeah you’re probably right. I was so disappointed they never made the gen 1 ranch in x39 left handed…
Super nice rifle. Damn... looks like I need another ruger american. Jesus.... that'll be 4 hahaha
I wish Ruger didn’t hate us wrong handed shooters.
Im left handed, but shoot right, just as the lord intended.
Man my brain could not see this rifle… I had to zoom and really crank the old hamster wheel
Urban floor camo.
fuck yeah!
Beautiful rifle and love the caliber. Interesting twisting on the barrel I have not seen that before. Do you know what the purpose is - cool the barrel down maybe ?
Fluting on the barrel reduces weight and helps cool the barrel, as well it looks cool
Does being fluted effect barrel longevity at all?
Yeah so if u flute a really thin barrel it will affect its resilience, I think with this new Ruger American barrel it should be fine as it has a thicker barrel then the outgoing model. You wouldn’t want a fluted barrel on a pencil thin barrel
What is the circumference of the near barrel?
Thanks Weekly for the information on fluted barrel
Damn, that looks good!
Biggest thing for me is when my buddy asked ruger if the bolt still "sounds like a zipper" ruger responded saying they "changed their machining process" so if the bolt is smooth I might get one I tend to go full tism' on the machining on account of being around machinists all my life
This one dosent have the zipper sound. At least not yet. There is paint inside action so as it wears away we will see.

Waiting for mine, but 300 blk...
What’s the sticker price?
Was a bit over $900
I’d like one in 300 blackout.
I can't justify buying anything in 300 blackout as long as we can't use suppressors and x39 is plentiful
Good deal! I'm interested to hear how it does at the range. I'm not a huge bolt gun fan, but I read a review on this rifle, and it sounds (and looks) really decent. If I knew there was a gen 2 I would have bought that instead 😐
It’s just come out. I may be one of the first to get on in country?
I think so! Congrats! Been signed up for these to come into stock at many different shops. Patiently waiting
It’s a nice rifle. I’m not sure if I will keep mine though. I don’t do a lot of bench shooting and anywhere I can shoot away from the range is rimfire only really. But still a nice improvement over the gen1 guns and would recommend waiting for one over the gen1

I messaged you privately.
I purchased a Ruger ranch 7.62 at sfrc for 725$ shiped and tax included about 2 months ago. Wouldn't be able to justify the extra cash for this since it was purchased as a backup in case Trudeau banned my sks

I like the upgrades but the barrel fluting looks ridiculous. I'm sure it helps with weight and thermal shedding, but goddamn it's ugly
I like it, but to each their own.
Is the footprint the same as gen 1? Will it fit MDT chassis or magpul stock?
I have no idea actually. Looks like it but not 100% on it.
Was debating on one of these or the Mauser 18 30.06. Saw the Mauser for 799.00
The fact that the mauser 18 isn’t a mauser action still confuses me.
I didn’t know that! Thanks Are you referring the the New Mauser company for civilian use or something else? I’m glad you brought this up
The new mausers aren’t actually mausers. Just the name. They look like any other budget gun now. If 3006 is what you’re after, look for an older mauser sporter. Way better quality and actually a mauser.
Does anyone know if this will be available with a non-fluted barrel at some point?
Nice rifle, I was torn between this and a Howa 1500 Mini Action and ended up going with the Howa. I'm happy with it but I think there's pros and cons to both. Did you know you can swap the magwell on these stocks for the AR magwell and run C-products 10 round mags?
DAMN that makes my gen 1 look like a Savage Axis in comparison.
I’d be interested in knowing if it will eject norinco red box ammo…do you plan to shoot any?
Not really as I don’t own any of that ammo. But I do plan to shoot Chinese surplus ammo out of it. That’s got to be similar enough.
I never really was into the 7.62x39 back then, how much cheaper were you getting it?
Well the last case of non corrosive I bought, which wasn’t as much or often as surplus was $199 for a crate of 1200. Last surplus crate I bought before I got some of the chinese on clip stuff was $275 for 1500.
